We consider stationary axisymmetric solutions of general relativity that asymptote to five dimensional Minkowski space. It is known that this system has a hidden SL(3,R) symmetry. We identify an SO(2,1) subgroup of this symmetry group that preserves the asymptotic boundary conditions. We show that the action of this subgroup on a static solution generates a one-parameter family of stationary solutions carrying angular momentum. We conjecture that by repeated applications of this procedure one can generate all stationary axisymmetric solutions starting from static ones. As an example, we derive the Myers-Perry black hole starting from the Schwarzschild solution in five dimensions.
We prove the uniqueness theorem for stationary axisymmetric black hole solution in Einstein-Maxwell-axion-dilaton gravity being the low-energy limit of the heterotic string theory. We consider both non-degenerate and extremal Kerr-Sen black hole solutions.
We study the structure of stationary and axisymmetric metrics solving the vacuum Einstein equations of General Relativity in four and higher dimensions, building on recent work in hep-th/0408141. We write the Einstein equations in a new form that naturally identifies the sources for such metrics. The sources live in a one-dimensional subspace and the entire metric is uniquely determined by them. We study in detail the structure of stationary and axisymmetric metrics in four dimensions, and consider as an example the sources of the Kerr black hole.
Solution generating techniques for general relativity with a conformally (and minimally) coupled scalar field are pushed forward to build a wide class of asymptotically flat, axisymmetric and stationary spacetimes continuously connected to Kerr. This family contains, amongst other things, rotating extensions of the Bekenstein black hole and also its angular and mass multipolar generalisations. Further addition of NUT charge is also discussed.
In this paper we construct a special class of four dimensional axisymmetric stationary spacetimes whose Ricci scalar is constant but not Einstein. We find that this solution has a ring singularity. At the end, we discuss some numerical results of these spacetimes.
New axisymmetric stationary solutions of the vacuum Einstein equations in five-dimensional asymptotically flat spacetimes are obtained by using solitonic solution-generating techniques. The new solutions are shown to be equivalent to the four-dimensional multi-solitonic solutions derived from particular class of four-dimensional Weyl solutions and to include different black rings from those obtained by Emparan and Reall.

We study some geometric properties of Killing horizons in 4-dimensional stationary and axisymmetric space-times with electromagnetic field and cosmological constant. Using a $(1+1+2)$ space-time split, we construct relations between the space-time Riemann tensor components and components of the Riemann tensor corresponding to the horizon surface. The Einstein equations allow to derive the space-time scalar curvature invariants, Kretschmann, Chern-Pontryagin, and Euler, on the 2-dimensional spacelike horizon surface. The derived relations generalize the relations known for Killing horizons of s…
We study stationary and axisymmetric solutions of General Relativity, i.e. pure gravity, in four or higher dimensions. D-dimensional stationary and axisymmetric solutions are defined as having D-2 commuting Killing vector fields. We derive a canonical form of the metric for such solutions that effectively reduces the Einstein equations to a differential equation on an axisymmetric D-2 by D-2 matrix field living in three-dimensional flat space (apart from a subclass of solutions that instead reduce to a set of equations on a D-2 by D-2 matrix field living in two-dimensional flat space). This ge…
We present interesting relationship between what are called stationary axisymmetric black hole solutions for the vacuum Einstein equations in the ordinary four-dimensions and exact solutions for self-dual Yang-Mills fields in flat $2+2$ dimensions which are nothing but the consistent backgrounds for $~N=2$~ open superstring. We show that any stationary axisymmetric black hole solution for the former automatically provides an exact solution for the latter. We also give a nice relation between the physical parameters of black holes and an invariant integral analogous to instanton charges for suc…
A key result in the proof of black hole uniqueness in 4-dimensions is that a stationary black hole that is ``rotating''--i.e., is such that the stationary Killing field is not everywhere normal to the horizon--must be axisymmetric. The proof of this result in 4-dimensions relies on the fact that the orbits of the stationary Killing field on the horizon have the property that they must return to the same null geodesic generator of the horizon after a certain period, $P$. This latter property follows, in turn, from the fact that the cross-sections of the horizon are two-dimensional spheres. Howe…
Backgrounds depending on time and on "angular" variable, namely polarized and unpolarized $S^1 \times S^2$ Gowdy models, are generated as the sector inside the horizons of the manifold corresponding to axisymmetric solutions. As is known, an analytical continuation of ordinary $D$-branes, $iD$-branes allows one to find $S$-brane solutions. Simple models have been constructed by means of analytic continuation of the Schwarzchild and the Kerr metrics. The possibility of studying the $i$-Gowdy models obtained here is outlined with an eye toward seeing if they could represent some kind of generali…
We suggest a way to study possible conformal symmetries on black hole horizons. We do this by carrying out a Kaluza-Klein like reduction of the Einstein-Hilbert action along the ignorable coordinates of stationary and axisymmetric black holes. Rigid diffeomorphism invariance of the $m$-ignorable coordinates then becomes a global $SL(m,R)$ gauge symmetry of the reduced action. Related to each non-vanishing angular velocity there is a particular $SL(2,R)$ subgroup, which can be extended to the Witt algebra on the black hole horizons. The classical Einstein-Hilbert action thus has $k$-copies of i…
The field equation with the cosmological constant term is derived and the energy of the general 4-dimensional stationary axisymmetric spacetime is studied in the context of the hamiltonian formulation of the teleparallel equivalent of general relativity (TEGR). We find that, by means of the integral form of the constraints equations of the formalism naturally without any restriction on the metric parameters, the energy for the asymptotically flat/de Sitter/Anti-de Sitter stationary spacetimes in the Boyer-Lindquist coordinate can be expressed as $E=\frac{1}{8π}\int_S dθdϕ(sinθ\sqrt{g_{θθ}}+\sq…
We consider arbitrary stationary and axisymmetric black holes in general relativity in $(d +1)$ dimensions (with $d \geq 3$) that satisfy the vacuum Einstein equation and have a non-degenerate horizon. We prove that the canonical energy of axisymmetric electromagnetic perturbations is positive definite. This establishes that all vacuum black holes are stable to axisymmetric electromagnetic perturbations. Our results also hold for asymptotically deSitter black holes that satisfy the vacuum Einstein equation with a positive cosmological constant. Our results also apply to extremal black holes pr…
We studied, both analytically and numerically, an Abelian Higgs vortex in the spacetime of stationary axisymmetric black hole being the solution of the low-energy limit of the heterotic string theory, acted as hair on the black hole background. Taking into account the gravitational backreaction of the vortex we show that its influence is far more subtle than causing only a conical defect. As a consequence of its existence, we found that the ergosphere was shifted as well as event horizon angular velocity was affected by its presence. Numerical simulations reveal the strong dependence of the vo…
We study the influence of stationary axisymmetric spacetimes on Casimir energy. We consider a massive scalar field and analyze its dependence on the apparatus orientation with respect to the dragging direction associated with such spaces. We show that, for an apparatus orientation not considered before in the literature, the Casimir energy can change its sign, producing a repulsive force. As applications, we analyze two specific metrics: one associated with a linear motion of a cylinder and a circular equatorial motion around a gravitational source described by Kerr geometry.
The late-time tail behavior of massive scalar fields is studied analytically in a stationary axisymmetric EMDA black hole geometry. It is shown that the asymptotic behavior of massive perturbations is dominated by the oscillatory inverse power-law decaying tail $ t^{-(l+3/2)}\sin(μt)$ at the intermediate late times, and by the asymptotic tail $ t^{-5/6}\sin(μt)$ at asymptotically late times. Our result seems to suggest that the intermediate tails $ t^{-(l+3/2)}\sin(μt)$ and the asymptotically tails $t^{-5/6} \sin(μt)$ may be quite general features for evolution of massive scalar fields in any …
In this paper we revisit Brill's proof of positive mass for three-dimensional, time-symmetric, axisymmetric initial data and generalise his argument in various directions. In 3+1 dimensions, we include an apparent horizon in the initial data and prove the Riemannian Penrose inequality in a wide number of cases by an elementary argument. In the case of 4+1 dimensions we obtain the analogue of Brill's formula for initial data admitting a generalised form of axisymmetry. Including an apparent horizon in the initial data, the Riemannian Penrose inequality is again proved for a large class of cases…
We present a general method to add KK-monopole charge to any asymptotically flat stationary axisymmetric solution of five dimensional General Relativity. The technique exploits the underlying SL(3,R) invariance of the system by identifying a particular element of the symmetry group which changes the asymptotic boundary condition and adds KK-monopole charge. Furthermore, we develop a set of technical tools which allow us to apply the SL(3,R) transformations to solutions produced by the Inverse Scattering method. As an example of our methods, we construct the exact solution describing a static b…

There is an intriguing analogy between the gravitational dynamics of the horizons and thermodynamics. In case of general relativity, as well as for a wider class of Lanczos-Lovelock theories of gravity, it is possible to interpret the field equations near any spherically symmetric horizon as a thermodynamic identity TdS = dE + PdV. We study this approach further and generalize the results to two more generic cases within the context of general relativity: (i) stationary axis-symmetric horizons and (ii) time dependent evolving horizons. In both the cases, the near horizon structure of Einstein …
Extending recent work in 5 dimensions, we prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions to the reduced Einstein equations for vacuum black holes in $(n+3)$-dimensional spacetimes admitting the isometry group $\mathbb{R}\times U(1)^{n}$, with Kaluza-Klein asymptotics for $n\geq3$. This is equivalent to establishing existence and uniqueness for singular harmonic maps $φ: \mathbb{R}^3\setminusΓ\rightarrow SL(n+1,\mathbb{R})/SO(n+1)$ with prescribed blow-up along $Γ$, a subset of the $z$-axis in $\mathbb{R}^3$. We also analyze the topology of the domain of outer communication for these spacetime…
Stationary, D-dimensional test branes, interacting with N-dimensional Myers-Perry bulk black holes, are investigated in arbitrary brane and bulk dimensions. The branes are asymptotically flat and axisymmetric around the rotation axis of the black hole with a single angular momentum. They are also spherically symmetric in all other dimensions allowing a total of O(1)xO(D-2) group of symmetry. It is shown that even though this setup is the most natural extension of the spherical symmetric problem to the simplest rotating case in higher dimensions, the obtained solutions are not compatible with t…
Using a generalized Weyl formalism, we show how stationary, axisymmetric solutions of the four-dimensional vacuum Einstein equation can be turned into static, axisymmetric solutions of five-dimensional dilaton gravity coupled to a two-form gauge field. This procedure is then used to obtain new solutions of the latter theory describing pairs of extremal magnetic black holes with opposite charges, known as black diholes. These diholes are kept in static equilibrium by membrane-like conical singularities stretching along two different directions. We also present solutions describing diholes suspe…
We prove the uniqueness theorem for stationary self-gravitating non-linear σ-models in five-dimensional spacetime. We show that the Myers-Perry vacuum Kerr spacetime is the only maximally extended, stationary, axisymmetric, asymptotically flat solution having the regular rotating event horizon with constant mapping.
Stationary, axisymmetric and slowly rotating vacuum spacetimes in the Hořava-Lifshitz (HL) gravity are studied, and shown that, for any given spherical static vacuum solution of the HL theory (of any model, including the ones with an additional U(1) symmetry), there always exists a corresponding slowly rotating, stationary and axisymmetric vacuum solution, which reduces to the former, when the rotation is switched off. The rotation is universal and only implicitly depends on the models of the HL theory and their coupling constants through the spherical seed solution. As a result, all asymptoti…
In this paper, we study the physical properties and the equilibrium thermal radiation emission characteristics of matter forming thin accretion disks in stationary axially symmetric wormhole spacetimes. The thin disk models are constructed by taking different values of the wormhole's angular velocity, and the time averaged energy flux, the disk temperature and the emission spectra of the accretion disks are obtained. Comparing the mass accretion in a rotating wormhole geometry with the one of a Kerr black hole, we verify that the intensity of the flux emerging from the disk surface is greater …
We study the structure of closed timelike curves (CTCs) for the near horizon limit of the five dimensional BMPV black hole, in its overrotating regime. We argue that Bousso's holographic screens are inside the chronologically safe region, extending a similar observation of Boyda et al. hep-th/0212087 for Goedel type solutions. We then extend this result to quite generic axisymmetric spacetimes with CTCs, showing that causal geodesics can't escape the chronologically safe region. As a spin-off of our results, we fill a gap in the identification of all maximally supersymmetric solutions of minim…
We present an heuristic argument for the universal area product: A_{+}A_{-}=(8πJ)^{2}+(4πQ^{2})^{2} for a four-dimensional, stationary, axisymmetric, electrically charged black hole with an arbitrary stationary axisymmetric distribution of external matter (possibly charged), derived by Marcus Ansorg and Jorg Hennig. Here A_{+} and A_{-} are the areas of the event and Cauchy horizons, and J and Q are the angular momentum and electric charge. Based on this argument, we conjecture that a universal area product holds for higher-dimensional, stationary, multi-horizon black objects in the presence o…
The construction of stationary axisymmetric multiwormhole solutions to gravitating field theories admitting toroidal reductions to three-dimensional gravitating sigma models is reviewed. We show that, as in the multi-black hole case, strut singularities always appear in this construction, except for very special configurations with an odd number of centers. We also review the analytical continuation of the multicenter solution across the $n$ cuts associated with the wormhole mouths. The resulting Riemann manifold has $2^n$ sheets interconnected by $2^{n-1}n$ wormholes. We find that the maximal…
It is shown that in the noncommutative spacetime defined by the generalized Moyal product, consistent noncommutativity can be obtained independent of the coordinate system such as Cartesian or polar one. In addition, based on the fact that the generalized Moyal product can be applied to arbitrary spacetime with non-trivial curvature, the effect of noncommutativity in the axisymmetric spacetime with central mass is investigated. The results demonstrate how the noncommutativity of spacetime modify the shape of the stationary limit surface in the noncommutative Kerr spacetime, which implies that …
