We initiated the program to look for new and simple forms for the five-dimensional rotating squashed black holes by solving directly the equation of motion. In a recent paper, the metric ansatz of dimensional reduction along the fifth spatial dimension was used to obtain a new but rather simple form for the five-dimensional rotating uncharged black hole solution with squashed horizons via solving the vacuum Einstein field equations. In this work, we continue to seek for another new but relatively simple form for the neutral rotating squashed black hole solution by using a different metric ansatz of time-like dimensional reduction. We then find its relation to our previous solution and investigate its thermodynamics by means of the counterterm method. Compared with the previous results given by the other author, both of our new metric forms and their associated thermodynamic expressions are very concise and elegant. Both of two new forms for the neutral rotating squashed black hole solution presented in this paper can be used as the seed to generate its charged generalization in D=5 minimal supergravity.
Thermal radiation of scalar particles and Dirac fermions from squashed charged rotating five-dimensional black holes is considered. To obtain temperature of the black holes we use the tunnelling method. In case of scalar particles we make use of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation. To consider tunnelling of fermions the Dirac equation was investigated. The examination shows that radial parts of the action for scalar particles and fermions in quasi-classical limit in the vicinity of horizon are almost the same and as a consequence it gives rise to the identical expressions for the temperature in both …
We explore the signature of the extra dimension in the Hawking radiation in a rotating Kaluza-Klein black hole with squashed horizons. Comparing with the spherical case, we find that the rotating parameter brings richer physics. We obtain the appropriate size of the extra dimension which can enhance the Hawking radiation and may open a window to detect the extra dimensions.
We find a rotating Kaluza-Klein black hole solution with a squashed $S^3$ horizon in five dimensions. This is a Kerr counterpart of the charged one found by Ishihara and Matsuno (hep-th/0510094) recently. The space-time is geodesic complete and free of naked singularity. Its asymptotic structure is a twisted $S^1$ fiber bundle over a four dimensional Minkowski space-time. We also study the mass and thermodynamics of this black hole.
A new holographic duality named Kerr/CFT correspondence was recently proposed to derive the statistical entropy of four-dimensional extremal Kerr black holes via identifying the quantum states in the near-horizon region with those of two-dimensional conformal field theory living on the boundary. In this paper, we apply this method to investigate five-dimensional extremal Kerr and Cvetič-Youm black holes with squashed horizons in different coordinates and find that the near-horizon geometries are not affected by the squashing transformation. Our investigation shows that the microscopic entropie…
We investigate five-dimensional rotating and charged black holes with squashed horizons in Godel universes. The general solution was recently derived by applying a squashing transformation on the general non-extremal charged and rotating black hole in the Godel universe found by Wu. We give a discussion of the squashed geometry and also consider its lift to ten dimensions and discuss the T-dual geometry. Finally, using the counterterms method we compute its conserved charges and explore its thermodynamics.
Considering gravitational and gauge anomalies at the horizon, a new method that to derive Hawking radiations from black holes has been developed by Wilczek et al. In this paper, we apply this method to non-rotating and rotating Kaluza-Klein black holes with squashed horizon, respectively. For the rotating case, we found that, after the dimensional reduction, an effective U(1) gauge field is generated by an angular isometry. The results show that the gauge current and energy-momentum tensor fluxes are exactly equivalent to Hawking radiation from the event horizon.
The squashed Kaluza-Klien (KK) black holes differ from the Schwarzschild black holes with asymptotic flatness or the black strings even at energies for which the KK modes are not excited yet, so that squashed KK black holes open a window in higher dimensions. Another important feature is that the squashed KK black holes are apparently stable and, thereby, let us avoid the Gregory-Laflamme instability. In the present paper, the evolution of scalar and gravitational perturbations in time and frequency domains is considered for these squashed KK black holes. The scalar field perturbations are ana…
Recently we suggested a solution generating technique for five-dimensional supergravity with three Abelian vector fields based on the hidden SO(4,4) symmetry of the three-dimensionally reduced theory. This technique generalizes the $G_{2(2)}$ generating technique developed earlier for minimal 5D supergravity (A. Bouchareb, G. Clément, C-M. Chen, D. V. Gal'tsov, N. G. Scherbluk, and Th. Wolf, Phys. Rev. D {\bf 76}, 104032 (2007)) and provides a new matrix representation for cosets forming the corresponding sigma-models in both cases. Here we further improve these methods introducing a matrix-va…
Applying squashing transformation to Kerr-Godel black hole solutions, we present a new type of a rotating Kaluza-Klein black hole solution to the five-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory with a Chern-Simon term. The new solutions generated via the squashing transformation have no closed timelike curve everywhere outside the black hole horizons. At the infinity, the metric asymptotically approaches a twisted S^1 bundle over a four-dimensional Minkowski space-time. One of the remarkable features is that the solution has two independent rotation parameters along an extra dimension associated with…
Supersymmetric zero-brane and one-brane probes in the squashed $AdS_2\times S^3$ near-horizon geometry of the BMPV black hole are studied. Supersymmetric zero-brane probes stabilized by orbital angular momentum on the $S^3$ are found and shown to saturate a BPS bound. We also find supersymmetric one-brane probes which have momentum and winding around a $U(1)_L\times U(1)_R$ torus in the $S^3$ and in some cases are static.
We construct new supersymmetric black holes in five-dimensional supergravity with an arbitrary number of vector multiplets and Fayet-Iliopoulos gauging. These are asymptotically locally AdS$_5$ and the conformal boundary comprises a squashed three-sphere with $\text{SU}(2)\times \text{U}(1)$ symmetry. The solution depends on two parameters, of which one determines the angular momentum and the Page electric charges, while the other controls the squashing at the boundary. The latter is arbitrary, however in the flow towards the horizon it is attracted to a value that only depends on the other pa…
We discuss some general features of black holes of five-dimensional supergravity, such as the first law of black hole mechanics. We also discuss some special features of rotating supersymmetric black holes. In particular, we show that the horizon is a non-singular, and {\sl non-rotating}, null hypersurface whose intersection with a Cauchy surface is a squashed 3-sphere. We find the Killing spinors of the near-horizon geometry and thereby determine the near-horizon isometry supergroup.
The construction of neutral black hole microstates is an important problem, with implications for the information paradox. In this paper we conjecture a construction of non-supersymmetric supergravity solutions describing D-brane configurations which carry mass and angular momentum, but no other conserved charges. We first study a classical string solution which locally carries dipole winding and momentum charges in two compact directions, but globally carries no net winding or momentum charge. We investigate its backreaction in the D1-D5 duality frame, where this object becomes a supertube wh…
We consider collision of two particles 1 and 2 near the horizon of the extremal rotating axially symmetric neutral generic black hole producing particles 3 and 4. We discuss the scenario in which both particles 3 and 4 fall into a black hole and move in a white hole region. If particle 1 is fine-tuned, the energy $E_{c.m.}$ in the centre of mass grows unbounded (the Bañados-Silk-West effect). Then, particle 3 \ can, in principle, reach a flat infinity in another universe. If not only $E_{c.m.}$ but also the corresponding Killing energy $E$ is unbounded, this gives a so-called super-Penrose pro…
It is shown that the non-Abelian black hole solutions have stationary generalizations which are parameterized by their angular momentum and electric Yang-Mills charge. In particular, there exists a non-static class of stationary black holes with vanishing angular momentum. It is also argued that the particle-like Bartnik-McKinnon solutions admit slowly rotating, globally regular excitations. In agreement with the non-Abelian version of the staticity theorem, these non-static soliton excitations carry electric charge, although their non-rotating limit is neutral.
Gödel universe is a direct product of a line and a three-dimensional spacetime we call G$_α$. In this paper, we show that the Gödel metrics can arise as exact solutions in Einstein-Maxwell-Axion, Einstein-Proca-Axion, or Freedman-Schwarz gauged supergravity theories. The last allows us to embed Gödel universe in string theory. The ten-dimensional spacetime is a direct product of a line and the nine-dimensional one of an $S^3\times S^3$ bundle over G$_α$, and it can be interpreted as some decoupling limit of the rotating D1/D5/D5 intersection. For some appropriate parameter choice, the nine-dim…
We establish an explicit correspondence of Einstein gravity on the squashed spheres that are the $U(1)$ bundles over $\mathbb{CP}^m$ to the Kaluza-Klein AdS gravity on the tori. This allows us to map the Ricci-flat Kerr metrics in odd dimensions with all equal angular momenta to charged Kaluza-Klein AdS black holes that can be lifted to become singly rotating M-branes and D3-branes. Furthermore, we find maps between Ricci-flat gravitational instantons to the AdS domain walls. In particular the supersymmetric bolt instantons correspond to domain walls that can be interpreted as distributed M-br…
We obtain the charged rotating black hole in conformal gravity. The metric is asymptotic to the (anti-)de Sitter spacetime. The contribution to the metric from the charges has a slower falloff than that in the Kerr-Newman AdS black hole. We analyse the global structure and obtain all the thermodynamical quantities including the mass, angular momentum, electric/magnetic charges and their thermodynamical conjugates. We verify that the first law of thermodynamics holds. We also obtain the new neutral rotating black holes that are beyond Einstein metrics. In contrast to the static ones, these rota…
We show that a model based on a D3-brane--anti-D3-brane system at finite temperature, proposed previously as a microscopic description of the non-rotating black threebrane of type IIB supergravity arbitrarily far from extremality, can also successfully reproduce the entropy of the rotating threebrane with arbitrary charge (including the neutral case, which corresponds to the Kerr black hole in seven dimensions). Our results appear to confirm in particular the need for a peculiar condition on the energy of the two gases involved in the model, whose physical interpretation remains to be elucidat…
We consider vacuum solutions in M theory of the form of a five-dimensional Kaluza-Klein black hole cross T^6. In a certain limit, these include the five-dimensional neutral rotating black hole (cross T^6). From a IIA standpoint, these solutions carry D0 and D6 charges. We show that there is a weakly coupled D-brane description which precisely reproduces the Hawking-Bekenstein entropy in the extremal limit, even though supersymmetry is completely broken.
We study odd dimensional charged equally rotating black holes in the Einstein-Maxwell theory with/without a cosmological constant by using the large D expansion method, where D is a spacetime dimension. Solving the Einstein-Maxwell equations in the 1/D expansion we obtain the large D effective equations for charged equally rotating black holes. The effective equations describe the nonlinear dynamics of charged equally rotating black holes. Especially the perturbation analysis of the effective equations gives analytic formula for quasinormal mode frequencies, and we can show charged equally rot…
We present new self-gravitating solutions in five dimensions that describe circular strings, i.e., rings, electrically coupled to a two-form potential (as e.g., fundamental strings do), or to a dual magnetic one-form. The rings are prevented from collapsing by rotation, and they create a field analogous to a dipole, with no net charge measured at infinity. They can have a regular horizon, and we show that this implies the existence of an infinite number of black rings, labeled by a continuous parameter, with the same mass and angular momentum as neutral black rings and black holes. We also dis…
The classical Einstein--Maxwell field equations admit static horizonless wormhole solutions with only a circular cosmic string singularity. We show how to extend these static solutions to exact rotating asymptotically flat solutions. For a suitable range of parameter values, these solutions describe charged or neutral rotating closed cosmic strings, with a perimeter of the order of their Schwarzschild radius.
We construct a supergravity solution describing a charged rotating black ring with S^2xS^1 horizon in a five dimensional asymptotically flat spacetime. In the neutral limit the solution is the rotating black ring recently found by Emparan and Reall. We determine the exact value of the lower bound on J^2/M^3, where J is the angular momentum and M the mass; the black ring saturating this bound has maximum entropy for the given mass. The charged black ring is characterized by mass M, angular momentum J, and electric charge Q, and it also carries local fundamental string charge. The electric charg…
In this paper, the equations of motion for geodesics in the neutral rotating Black Ring metric are derived and the separability of these equations is considered. The bulk of the paper is concerned with sets of solutions where the geodesic equations can be examined analytically - specifically geodesics confined to the axis of rotation, geodesics restricted to the equatorial plane, and geodesics that circle through the centre of the ring. The geodesics on the rotational axis behave like a particle in a potential well, while the geodesics confined to the equatorial plane mimic those of the Schwar…
This paper explores the circular geodesics of neutral test particles on an equatorial plane around a rotating black hole. After using equations of motion of scalar-tensor-vector gravity with the circular geodesics of null-like particles, we find the equation of photon orbit. With the help of an effective potential form, we have examined the stable regimes of photons orbits. The Lyapunov exponent, as well as the effective force acting on photons, is also investigated. We examine the energy extraction from a black hole via Penrose process. Furthermore, we discuss the negative energy state and th…
In this article, we explore the geodesics motion of neutral test particles and the process of energy extraction from a regular rotating Hayward black hole. We analyse the effect of spin, as well as deviation parameter $g$, on ergoregion, event horizon and static limit of the said black hole. By making use of geodesic equations on the equatorial plane, we determine the innermost stable circular and photon orbits. Moreover, we investigate the effective potentials and effective force to have information on motion and the stability of circular orbits. On studying the negative energy states, we fig…
This paper extends to the case of charged rotating black holes the conformally stationary, axisymmetric, conformally separable solutions presented for uncharged rotating black holes in a companion paper. In the present paper, the collisionless fluid accreted by the black hole may be charged. The charge of the black hole is determined self-consistently by the charge accretion rate. As in the uncharged case, hyper-relativistc counter-streaming between ingoing and outgoing streams drives inflation at (just above) the inner horizon, followed by collapse. If both ingoing and outgoing streams are ch…
We outline a proof of the stability of a massless neutral scalar field $ψ$ in the background of a wide class of four dimensional asymptotically flat rotating and ``electrically charged'' solutions of supergravity, and the low energy limit of string theory, known as STU metrics. Despite their complexity, we find it possible to circumvent the difficulties presented by the existence of ergo-regions and the related phenomenon of super-radiance in the original metrics by following a strategy due to Whiting, and passing to an auxiliary metric admitting an everywhere lightlike Killing field and const…
In this work we have obtained a charged black hole solution in the presence of perfect fluid dark matter (PFDM) and discuss its energy conditions. The metric corresponding to the rotating avatar of this black hole solution is obtained by incorporating the Newman-Janis algorithm. We then compute two types of circular geodesics, namely, the null geodesics and time-like geodesics for this rotating spacetime geometry. For the case of time-like geodesics, we consider both neutral as well as charged massive particles. The effective potentials of the corresponding circular geodesics has also been stu…
In this paper, we study the thermodynamics and phase transition of a BTZ black hole in a finite space region, namely a cavity. By imposing a temperature-fixed boundary condition on the wall of the cavity and evaluating the Euclidean action, we derive the thermodynamic quantities and then construct the first law of thermodynamics for a static and neutral BTZ black hole, a rotating BTZ black hole and a charged BTZ black hole, respectively. We prove that heat capacities of these three types of black holes are always non-negative. Considering a grand canonical ensemble, we find that the non-extrem…
If a black hole has hair, how short can this hair be? A partial answer to this intriguing question was recently provided by the 'no-short hair' theorem which asserts that the external fields of a spherically-symmetric electrically neutral hairy black-hole configuration must extend beyond the null circular geodesic which characterizes the corresponding black-hole spacetime. One naturally wonders whether the no-short hair inequality $r_{\text{hair}}>r_{\text{null}}$ is a generic property of all electrically neutral hairy black-hole spacetimes? In this paper we provide evidence that the answer to…
We present the most general rotating black hole solution of five-dimensional N=4 superstring vacua that conforms to the ``no hair theorem''. It is chosen to be parameterized in terms of massless fields of the toroidally compactified heterotic string. The solutions are obtained by performing a subset of O(8,24) transformations, i.e., symmetry transformations of the effective three-dimensional action for stationary solutions, on the five-dimensional (neutral) rotating solution parameterized by the mass m and two rotational parameters $l_1$ and $l_2$. The explicit form of the generating solution …
Using the stationary formulation of the toroidally compactified heterotic string theory in terms of a pair of matrix Ernst potentials we consider the four-dimensional truncation of this theory with no U(1) vector fields excited. Imposing one time-like Killing vector permits us to express the stationary effective action as a model in which gravity is coupled to a matrix Ernst potential which, under certain parametrization, allows us to interpret the matter sector of this theory as a double Ernst system. We generate a web of string vacua which are related to each other via a set of discrete symm…
We reinterpret the OSV formula for the on-shell action/entropy function of asymptotically flat BPS black holes as a fixed point formula that is formally equivalent to a recent gluing proposal for asymptotically AdS$_4$ black holes. This prompts a conjecture that the complete perturbative answer for the most general gravitational building block of 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravity at a single fixed point takes the form of a Nekrasov-like partition function with equivariant parameters related to the higher-derivative expansion of the prepotential. In turn this leads to a simple localization-like p…
We find exact rotating and non-rotating neutral black hole solutions in the Godel universe of the five dimensional minimal supergravity theory. We also describe the embedding of this solution in M-theory. After dimensional reduction and T-duality, we obtain a supergravity solution corresponding to placing a black string in a pp-wave background.

We drop the complexification procedure from the Newman-Janis algorithm and introduce more physical arguments and symmetry properties, and we show how one can generate regular and singular rotating black hole and non-black-hole solutions in Boyer-Lindquist coordinates. We focus on generic rotating regular black holes and show that they are regular on the Kerr-like ring but physical entities are undefined there. We show that rotating regular black holes have much smaller electric charges, and, with increasing charge, they turn into regular non-black-hole solutions well before their Kerr-Newman c…
Several Einstein-Sasaki 7-metrics appearing in the physical literature are fibered over four dimensional Kahler-Einstein metrics. Instead we consider here the natural Kahler-Einstein metrics defined over the twistor space Z of any quaternion Kahler 4-space, together with the corresponding Einstein-Sasaki metrics. We work out an explicit expression for these metrics and we prove that they are indeed tri-Sasaki. Moreover, we present an squashed version of them which is of weak $G_2$ holonomy. We focus in examples with three commuting Killing vectors and we extend them to supergravity backgrounds…
We investigate the critical behaviour of charged and rotating AdS black holes in d spacetime dimensions, including effects from non-linear electrodynamics via the Born-Infeld action, in an extended phase space in which the cosmological constant is interpreted as thermodynamic pressure. For Reissner-Nordstrom black holes we find that the analogy with the Van der Walls liquid-gas system holds in any dimension greater than three, and that the critical exponents coincide with those of the Van der Waals system. We find that neutral slowly rotating black holes in four space-time dimensions also have…
We use the Fock-Ivanenko formalism to obtain the Dirac equation which describes the interaction of a massless 1/2-spin neutral fermion with a gravitational field around a Schwarzschild black hole (BH). We obtain approximated analytical solutions for the eigenvalues of the energy (quasi-normal frequencies) and their corresponding eigenstates (quasi-normal states). The interesting result is that all the excited states [and their supersymmetric (SUSY) partners] have a purely imaginary frequency, which can be expressed in terms of the Hawking temperature. Furthermore, as one expects for SUSY Hamil…
We study the Page curve and the information paradox for the BTZ black hole coupled to two thermal baths by applying the island paradigm. We prove that as the island locates outside the event horizon, the entanglement entropy of Hawking radiation for finite temperature black holes obeys the Page curve. However, for extremal rotating black holes, the Page time and the scrambling time become divergent. To avoid the ill-defined of the Page time, we consider the contribution of superradiance, which is a process that can extract rotational energy from black holes. The superradiance continues in a pe…
We prove that, in a general higher derivative theory of gravity coupled to abelian gauge fields and neutral scalar fields, the entropy and the near horizon background of a rotating extremal black hole is obtained by extremizing an entropy function which depends only on the parameters labeling the near horizon background and the electric and magnetic charges and angular momentum carried by the black hole. If the entropy function has a unique extremum then this extremum must be independent of the asymptotic values of the moduli scalar fields and the solution exhibits attractor behaviour. If the …
In many astrophysical scenarios the charge of the black hole is often neglected due to unrealistically large values of the charge required for the Reissner-Nordström spacetime metric. However, black holes may possess small electric charge due to various selective accretion mechanisms. In this paper we investigate the effect of a small hypothetical electric charge of a Schwarzschild black hole on the ionization of a freely falling neutral particle and subsequent escape of the ionized particle from the black hole. We show that the energy of ionized particle can grow ultra-high and discuss distin…
We study collision of particles in the vicinity of a horizon of a weakly magnetized non-rotating black hole. In the presence of the magnetic field innermost stable circular orbits (ISCO) of charged particles can be located close to the horizon. We demonstrate that for a collision of two particles, one of which is charged and revolving at ISCO and the other is neutral and falling from infinity, the maximal collision energy can be high in the limit of strong magnetic field. This effect has some similarity with the recently discussed effect of high center-of-mass energy for collision of particles…
We study neutrino spin oscillations in black hole backgrounds. In the case of a charged black hole, the maximum frequency of oscillations is a monotonically increasing function of the charge. For a rotating black hole, the maximum frequency decreases with increasing the angular momentum. In both cases, the frequency of spin oscillations decreases as the distance from the black hole grows. As a phenomenological application of our results, we study simple bipolar neutrino system which is an interesting example of collective neutrino oscillations. We show that the precession frequency of the flav…
We present a new solution describing a pair of rotating, charged, and accelerating black holes in in the low energy limit of heterotic string theory. To obtain the solution, we apply the Hassan-Sen transformation to the neutral accelerating Kerr spacetime as the seed solution. Some properties of the black hole solutions are discussed.
