We investigate five-dimensional rotating and charged black holes with squashed horizons in Godel universes. The general solution was recently derived by applying a squashing transformation on the general non-extremal charged and rotating black hole in the Godel universe found by Wu. We give a discussion of the squashed geometry and also consider its lift to ten dimensions and discuss the T-dual geometry. Finally, using the counterterms method we compute its conserved charges and explore its thermodynamics.
We study the quasinormal modes of scalar perturbation in the background of five-dimensional charged Kaluza-Klein black holes with squashed horizons immersed in the Gödel universe. Besides the influence due to the compactness of the extra dimension, we disclose the cosmological rotational effect in the wave dynamics. The wave behavior affected by the Gödel parameter provides an interesting insight into the Gödel universe.
Applying squashing transformation to Kerr-Godel black hole solutions, we present a new type of a rotating Kaluza-Klein black hole solution to the five-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory with a Chern-Simon term. The new solutions generated via the squashing transformation have no closed timelike curve everywhere outside the black hole horizons. At the infinity, the metric asymptotically approaches a twisted S^1 bundle over a four-dimensional Minkowski space-time. One of the remarkable features is that the solution has two independent rotation parameters along an extra dimension associated with…
We investigate the strong gravitational lensing in a squashed Kaluza-Klein black hole immersed in the Gödel universe with global rotation. Our result show that the strong gravitational lensing in the squashed Kaluza-Klein Gödel black hole spacetime has some distinct behaviors from that in the Kerr case. In the squashed Kaluza-Klein Gödel black hole spacetime, the photon sphere radius, the minimum impact parameter, the coefficient $\bar{a}$, $\bar{b}$ and the deflection angle $α(θ)$ in the $ϕ$ direction are independent of whether the photon goes with or against the global rotation of the Gödel …
It is observed that three-dimensional Gödel black holes can be promoted to exact string theory backgrounds through an orbifold of an hyperbolic asymmetric marginal deformation of the SL(2,R) WZW model. Tachyons are found in the spectrum of long strings. Uplifting these solutions in type IIB supergravity, extremal black holes are shown to preserve one supersymmetry in accordance with the BTZ limit. We also make connections with some recently discussed warped black hole solutions of topologically massive gravity, showing that they actually correspond to quotients of spacelike squashed AdS_3.
Supersymmetric backgrounds in string and M-theory of the Godel Universe type are studied. We find several new Godel Universes that preserve up to 20 supersymmetries. In particular, we obtain an interesting Godel Universe in M-theory with 18 supersymmetries which does not seem to be dual to a pp-wave. We show that not only T-duality but also the type-IIA/M-theory S-duality can give supersymmetric Godel Universes from pp-waves. We find solutions that can interpolate between Godel Universes and pp-waves. We also compute the string spectrum on two type IIA Godel Universes. Furthermore, we obtain t…
We analyze the structure of supersymmetric Godel-like cosmological solutions of string theory. Just as the original four-dimensional Godel universe, these solutions represent rotating, topologically trivial cosmologies with a homogeneous metric and closed timelike curves. First we focus on "phenomenological" aspects of holography, and identify the preferred holographic screens associated with inertial comoving observers in Godel universes. We find that holography can serve as a chronology protection agency: The closed timelike curves are either hidden behind the holographic screen, or broken b…
We find exact rotating and non-rotating neutral black hole solutions in the Godel universe of the five dimensional minimal supergravity theory. We also describe the embedding of this solution in M-theory. After dimensional reduction and T-duality, we obtain a supergravity solution corresponding to placing a black string in a pp-wave background.
We investigate the scalar field perturbations of the 4+1-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole immersed in a Gödel Universe, described by the Gimon-Hashimoto solution. This may model the influence of the possible rotation of the Universe upon the radiative processes near a black hole. In the regime when the scale parameter $j$ of the Gödel background is small, the oscillation frequency is linearly decreasing with $j$, while the damping time is increasing. The quasinormal modes are damping, implying stability of the Schwarzschild-Gödel space-time against scalar field perturbations. The approximat…
We present a class of supersymmetric Godel solutions in string theory from the non-standard intersection of branes in supergravities. Such solutions are obtained by applying a T-duality on the known solutions in PP-wave spacetime. We further present classical solutions of supersymmetric D-brane in Godel universes arising from the PP-wave in the near horizon geometry of stack of D5-branes and from the new isometries of H_6 PP-wave background. These branes are supported by multiple constant Neveu-Schwarz and Ramond-Ramond field strengths.
We extend the method of Kerr/CFT correspondence recently proposed in arXiv:0809.4266 [hep-th] to the extremal (charged) Kerr black hole embedded in the five-dimensional Gödel universe. With the aid of the central charges in the Virasoro algebra and the Frolov-Thorne temperatures, together with the use of the Cardy formula, we have obtained the microscopic entropies that precisely agree with the ones macroscopically calculated by Bekenstein-Hawking area law.
We prove the consistency of the Gödel metric with the Horava-Lifshitz gravity whose action involves terms with z=1, z=2 and z=3. We show that, for different relations between the parameters of the theory, this consistency is achieved for different classes of matter, in particular, for the small cosmological constant it is achieved only for the exotic matter, that is, ghosts or phantom matter.
Gödel universe is a direct product of a line and a three-dimensional spacetime we call G$_α$. In this paper, we show that the Gödel metrics can arise as exact solutions in Einstein-Maxwell-Axion, Einstein-Proca-Axion, or Freedman-Schwarz gauged supergravity theories. The last allows us to embed Gödel universe in string theory. The ten-dimensional spacetime is a direct product of a line and the nine-dimensional one of an $S^3\times S^3$ bundle over G$_α$, and it can be interpreted as some decoupling limit of the rotating D1/D5/D5 intersection. For some appropriate parameter choice, the nine-dim…
We construct new solutions of the Einstein equations with negative cosmological constant in five spacetime dimensions. They smoothly emerge as deformations of the known AdS$_5$ black strings. The first type of configurations can be viewed as the $d=4$ Taub-NUT-AdS solutions uplifted to five dimensions, in the presence of a negative cosmological constant. We argue that these solutions provide the gravity dual for a ${\cal N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory formulated in a $d=4$ homogeneous Gödel-type spacetime background. A different deformation of the AdS$_5$ black strings leads to squashed AdS bla…
We demonstrate how a five dimensional Godel universe appears as the core of resolved two-charge and three-charge over-rotating BMPV black holes. A smeared generalized supertube acts as a domain wall and removes regions of closed timelike curves by cutting off both the inside and outside solution before causality violations appear, effectively allowing the Godel universe and the over-rotating black hole to solve each other's causality problems. This mechanism suggests a novel form of holography between the compact Godel region and the diverse vacua and excitations of the bound state of a finite…
We construct boundary states for supertubes in the flat spacetime. The T-dual objects of supertubes are moving spiral D1-branes (D-helices). Since we can obtain these D-helices from the usual D1-branes via null deformation, we can construct the boundary states for these moving D-helices in the covariant formalism. Using these boundary states, we calculate the vacuum amplitude between two supertubes in the closed string channel and read the open string spectrum via the open closed duality. We find there are critical values of the energy for on-shell open strings on the supertubes due to the non…
Godel universe in M-theory is a supersymmetric and homogeneous background with rotation and four-form magnetic flux. It is known that, as seen in inertial frame of co-moving observer, all geodesics with zero orbital angular momentum orbit inside `surface of light velocity' (CTC horizon). To learn if other probes can travel beyond the CTC horizon, we study dynamics of M-graviton and, in particular, M2-brane, whose motion is affected by Lorentz force exerted by the four-form magnetic flux and by nonzero orbital angular momentum. Classically, we find that both probes gyrate closed orbits, but dia…
We study the condition for the consistency of the Gödel metric with the dynamical Chern-Simons modified gravity. It turns out to be that this compatibility can be achieved only if the cosmological constant is variable in the space.
We consider scalar field perturbations of the asymptotically Gödel 5-dimensional charged rotating black holes with two equal angular momenta. It is shown that the spectrum of proper oscillations of the perturbation includes superradiant unstable modes. The reason for the instability is the confining Dirichlet boundary condition at the asymptotically far region of the Gödel Universe. The confining box makes superradiant modes extract rotational energy from the black hole and, after repeated reflections from the black hole, grow unboundedly. A similar instability takes place for rotating black h…
We generalize the classification of all supersymmetric solutions of pure N=2, D=4 gauged supergravity to the case when external sources are included. It is shown that the source must be an electrically charged dust. We give a particular solution to the resulting equations, that describes a Goedel-type universe preserving one quarter of the supersymmetries.
We show that M-theory admits a supersymmetric compactification to the Godel universe of the form Godel3 x S2 x CY3. We interpret this geometry as coming from the backreaction of M2-branes wrapping the S2 in an AdS3 x S2 x CY3 flux compactification. In the black hole deconstruction proposal similar states give rise to the entropy of a D4-D0 black hole. The system is effectively described by a three-dimensional theory consisting of an axion-dilaton coupled to gravity with a negative cosmological constant. Other embeddings of the three-dimensional theory imply similar supersymmetric Godel compact…
We show that homogeneous Gödel spacetimes need not contain closed timelike curves in low-energy-effective string theories. We find exact solutions for the Gödel metric in string theory for the full $O(α^{\prime})$ action including both dilaton and axion fields. The results are valid for bosonic, heterotic and super-strings. To first order in the inverse string tension $α^{\prime}$, these solutions display a simple relation between the angular velocity of the Gödel universe, $Ω,$ and the inverse string tension of the form $α^{\prime}=1/Ω^2$ in the absence of the axion field. The generalization …
Gödel universe, one of the most interesting exact solutions predicted by General Relativity, describes a homogeneous rotating universe containing naked closed time-like curves (CTCs). It was shown that such CTCs are the consequence of the null energy condition in General Relativity. In this paper, we show that the Gödel-type metrics with chronology protection can emerge in Einstein-Horndeski gravity. We construct such exact solutions also in Einstein-Horndeski-Maxwell and Einstein-Horndeski-Proca theories.
Based on the mathematical similarity between the Friedman open metric and Godel's metric in the case of nearby distances, we investigate a new scenario for the Universe's evolution, where the present Friedman universe originates from a primordial Godel universe by a phase transition during which the cosmological constant vanishes. Using Hubble's constant and the present matter density as input, we show that the radius and density of the primordial Godel universe are close, in order of magnitude, to the present values, and that the time of expansion coincides with the age of the Universe in the…
We consider Neveu-Schwarz pp-waves with spacetime supersymmetry. Upon compactification of a spacelike direction, these backgrounds develop Closed Null Curves (CNCs) and Closed Timelike Curves (CTCs), and are U-dual to supersymmetric Godel type universes. We study classical and quantum strings in this background, with emphasis on the strings winding around the compact direction. We consider two types of strings: long strings stabilized by NS flux and rotating strings which are stabilized against collapse by angular momentum. Some of the latter strings wrap around CNCs and CTCs, and are thus a p…
We consider a string-inspired, gravitational theory of scalar and electromagnetic fields and we investigate the existence of axially-symmetric, Gödel-type cosmological solutions. The neutral case is studied first and an "extreme" Gödel-type rotating solution, that respects the causality, is determined. The charged case is considered next and two new configurations for the, minimally-coupled to gravity, electromagnetic field are presented. Another configuration motivated by the expected distribution of currents and charges in a rotating universe is studied and shown to lead to a Gödel-type solu…
We construct Godel-type black hole and particle solutions to Einstein-Maxwell theory in 2+1 dimensions with a negative cosmological constant and a Chern-Simons term. On-shell, the electromagnetic stress-energy tensor effectively replaces the cosmological constant by minus the square of the topological mass and produces the stress-energy of a pressure-free perfect fluid. We show how a particular solution is related to the original Godel universe and analyze the solutions from the point of view of identifications. Finally, we compute the conserved charges and work out the thermodynamics.
A black hole immersed in a rotating Universe, described by the Gimon-Hashimoto solution, is tested on stability against scalar field perturbations. Unlike the previous studies on perturbations of this solution, which dealt only with the limit of slow Universe rotation j, we managed to separate variables in the perturbation equation for the general case of arbitrary rotation. This leads to qualitatively different dynamics of perturbations, because the exact effective potential does not allow for Schwarzschild-like asymptotic of the wave function in the form of purely outgoing waves. The Dirichl…
Godel-type metrics are introduced and used in producing charged dust solutions in various dimensions. The key ingredient is a (D-1)-dimensional Riemannian geometry which is then employed in constructing solutions to the Einstein-Maxwell field equations with a dust distribution in D dimensions. The only essential field equation in the procedure turns out to be the source-free Maxwell's equation in the relevant background. Similarly the geodesics of this type of metric are described by the Lorentz force equation for a charged particle in the lower dimensional geometry. It is explicitly shown wit…
We present the general exact solutions for non-extremal rotating charged black holes in the Godel universe of five-dimensional minimal supergravity theory. They are uniquely characterized by four non-trivial parameters, namely the mass $m$, the charge $q$, the Kerr equal rotation parameter $a$, and the Godel parameter $j$. We calculate the conserved energy, angular momenta and charge for the solutions and show that they completely satisfy the first law of black hole thermodynamics. We also study the symmetry and separability of the Hamilton-Jacobi and the massive Klein-Gordon equations in thes…
We examine an exact solution which represents a charged black hole in a Kaluza-Klein universe in the five-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory. The spacetime approaches to the five-dimensional Kasner solution that describes expanding three dimensions and shrinking an extra dimension in the far region. The metric is continuous but not smooth at the black hole horizon. There appears a mild curvature singularity that a free-fall observer can traverse the horizon. The horizon is a squashed three-sphere with a constant size, and the metric is approximately static near the horizon.
We construct new supersymmetric black holes in five-dimensional supergravity with an arbitrary number of vector multiplets and Fayet-Iliopoulos gauging. These are asymptotically locally AdS$_5$ and the conformal boundary comprises a squashed three-sphere with $\text{SU}(2)\times \text{U}(1)$ symmetry. The solution depends on two parameters, of which one determines the angular momentum and the Page electric charges, while the other controls the squashing at the boundary. The latter is arbitrary, however in the flow towards the horizon it is attracted to a value that only depends on the other pa…
The SO(4) isometry of the extreme Reissner-Nordstrom black hole of N=1, D=5 supergravity can be partly broken, without breaking any supersymmetry, in two different ways. The ``right'' solution is a rotating black hole (BMPV); the ``left'' is interpreted as a black hole in a Godel universe. In ten dimensions, both spacetimes are described by deformations of the D1-D5-pp-wave system with the property that the non-trivial Closed Timelike Curves of the five dimensional manifold are absent in the universal covering space of the ten dimensional manifold. In the decoupling limit, the BMPV deformation…
It is well-known that a hypothetical particle which moves faster than the light, a \emph{tachyon}, is unstable in the Minkowski space-time. Here we shall show that, contrary to the Minkowski case, the tachyon is stable in the rotating Universe described by a family of the Gödel-like solutions, unless the absolute value of its mass is larger than some small constant which is related to the universe`s rotation scale and is many orders less than the electron`s mass. The smallness of this upper bound on the tachyon`s mass might be an explanation why we do not observe heavy tachyons. Mathematically…
We study the thermodynamics of the recently-discovered non-extremal charged rotating black holes of gauged supergravities in five, seven and four dimensions, obtaining energies, angular momenta and charges that are consistent with the first law of thermodynamics. We obtain their supersymmetric limits by using these expressions together with an analysis of the AdS superalgebras including R-charges. We give a general discussion of the global structure of such solutions, and apply it in the various cases. We obtain new regular supersymmetric black holes in seven and four dimensions, as well as re…
Starting from the recent classification of quotients of Freund--Rubin backgrounds in string theory of the type AdS_{p+1} x S^q by one-parameter subgroups of isometries, we investigate the physical interpretation of the associated quotients by discrete cyclic subgroups. We establish which quotients have well-behaved causal structures, and of those containing closed timelike curves, which have interpretations as black holes. We explain the relation to previous investigations of quotients of asymptotically flat spacetimes and plane waves, of black holes in AdS and of Godel-type universes.
We study the scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations of planar AdS$_4$ black holes with NUT charge. In the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence, these solutions describe a thermal quantum field theory embedded in a Gödel-type universe with closed time-like curves. For a given temperature and NUT charge, two different planar Taub-NUT solutions exist, but we show that only the one with a positive specific heat contributes to the Euclidean saddle point in the path integral. By using the Newman-Penrose formalism, we then derive the master equations satisfied by scalar, electromagn…
