Ambitwistor strings are chiral (holomorphic) strings whose target is the space of complex null geodesics, ambitwistor space. We introduce twistor representations of ambitwistor space in 6 and 5 dimensions. In 6d the twistor representation is naturally conformally invariant. Anomaly cancellation leads to models that describe biadjoint scalar amplitudes and certain conformally invariant gauge and gravity theories, respectively of 4$^{\rm th}$ and 6$^{\rm th}$ order. There are three such models, reflecting triality for the conformal group SO(8) associated to these 6d models. On reduction to five dimensions, gauge anomaly cancellation requires supersymmetry and the resulting models describe maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills and gravity. The twistor representation of these ambitwistor strings lead to formulæ for maximally supersymmetric gauge and gravity amplitudes based on the polarized scattering equations in 5d, found earlier by the first two authors.
We study all tree-level split helicity gluon amplitudes by using the recently proposed BCFW recursion relation and Hodges diagrams in ambitwistor space. We pick out the contributing diagrams and find that all of them can be divided into triangles in a suitable way. We give the explicit expressions for all of these amplitudes. As an example, we reproduce the six gluon split NMHV amplitudes in momentum space.
We obtain compact formulae for tree super-amplitudes for 10 and 11-dimensional supergravity and 10-dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills and Born-Infeld. These are based on the \emph{polarised scattering equations}. These incorporate polarization data into a spinor field on the Riemann sphere and arise from a twistorial representation of ambitwistor strings in 10 and 11 dimensions. They naturally extend amplitude formulae to manifest maximal supersymmetry. The framework is the natural generalization of twistorial ambitwistor string formulae found previously in four and six dimensions and is in…
We introduce a spinorial version of the scattering equations, the \emph{polarized scattering equations}, that incorporates spinor polarization data. They lead to new formulae for tree-level scattering amplitudes in six dimensions that directly extend to maximal supersymmetry. They give a quite distinct framework from that of Cachazo et al.; in particular, the formulae do not change character from even to odd numbers of particles. We find new ingredients for integrands for maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills, gravity, M5 and D5 branes. We explain how the polarized scattering equations and super…
Using the SL(2,R)-duality in a dimensionally reduced spacetime in (the bosonic sector of) five-dimensional minimal supergravity, we construct general Kaluza-Klein black hole solutions which carry six independent charges, its mass, angular momentum along four dimensions, electric and magnetic charges of the Maxwell fields in addition to Kaluza-Klein electric and magnetic monopole charges.
Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity (EGB) provides a natural higher dimensional and higher order curvature generalization of Einstein gravity. It contains a new, presumably microscopic, length scale that should affect short distance properties of the dynamics, such as Choptuik scaling. We present the results of a numerical analysis in generalized flat slice co-ordinates of self-gravitating massless scalar spherical collapse in five and six dimensional EGB gravity near the threshold of black hole formation. Remarkably, the behaviour is universal (i.e. independent of initial data) but qualitatively di…
We consider the application of twistor theory to five-dimensional anti-de Sitter space. The twistor space of AdS$_5$ is the same as the ambitwistor space of the four-dimensional conformal boundary; the geometry of this correspondence is reviewed for both the bulk and boundary. A Penrose transform allows us to describe free bulk fields, with or without mass, in terms of data on twistor space. Explicit representatives for the bulk-to-boundary propagators of scalars and spinors are constructed, along with twistor action functionals for the free theories. Evaluating these twistor actions on bulk-t…
In this paper, we describe in detail a scheme for the construction of highly accurate numerical solutions to Einstein's field equations in five and six spacetime dimensions corresponding to non-uniform black strings. The scheme consists of a sophistically adapted multi-domain pseudo-spectral method which incorporates a detailed understanding of the solution's behavior at the domain boundaries and at critical points. In particular, the five-dimensional case is exceedingly demanding as logarithmic terms appear which need to be treated with special care. The scheme resolves these issues and permi…
We investigate consistency conditions for supersymmetric gauge theories in higher dimensions. First, we give a survey of Seiberg's necessary conditions for the existence of such theories with simple groups in five and six dimensions. We then make some comments on how theories in different dimensions are related. In particular, we discuss how the Landau pole can be avoided in theories that are not asymptotically free in four dimensions, and the mixing of tensor and vector multiplets in dimensional reduction from six dimensions.
In this paper we derive Ward-Takahashi identities from the path integral of supersymmetric five-dimensional field theories with an $SU(1,3)$ spacetime symmetry in the presence of instantons. We explicitly show how $SU(1,3)$ is enhanced to $SU(1,3)\times U(1)$ where the additional $U(1)$ acts non-perturbatively. Solutions to such Ward-Takahashi identities were previously obtained from correlators of six-dimensional Lorentzian conformal field theories but where the instanton number was replaced by the momentum along a null direction. Here we study the reverse procedure whereby we construct corre…
We study correlation functions in five-dimensional non-Lorentzian theories with an $SU(1,3)$ conformal symmetry. Examples of such theories have recently been obtained as $Ω$-deformed Yang-Mills Lagrangians arising from a null reduction of six-dimensional superconformal field theories on a conformally compactified Minkowski space. The correlators exhibit a rich structure with many novel properties compared to conventional correlators in Lorentzian conformal field theories. Moreover, identifying the instanton number with the Fourier mode number of the dimensional reduction offers a hope to formu…
Five and six dimensional static, spherically symmetric, asymptotically Euclidean black holes, are unstable under gravitational perturbations if their mass is lower than a critical value set by the string tension. The instability is due to the Gauss-Bonnet correction to Einstein's equations, and was found in a previous work on linear stability of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black holes with constant curvature horizons in arbitrary dimensions. We study the unstable cases and calculate the values of the critical masses. The results are relevant to the issue of black hole production in high energy colli…
Though under nonlinear accretion, all black holes in four and higher dimensions obey the weak cosmic censorship conjecture (CCC); however, they generally violate it for linear test particle accretion with the exception of five-dimensional rotating black hole with a single rotation. In dimensions greater than five, there exists no extremal condition for black hole with single rotation and hence it can never be overspun. However, the extremal condition does exist for five-dimensional black hole with two rotations and then it could indeed be overspun under linear accretion. In this paper, we stud…
We present a particularly nice D-dimensional graph-based representation of the full color-dressed five-point tree-level gluon amplitude. It possesses the following virtues: 1) it satisfies the color-kinematic correspondence, and thus trivially generates the associated five-point graviton amplitude, 2) all external state information is encoded in color-ordered partial amplitudes, and 3) one function determines the kinematic contribution of all graphs in the Yang-Mills amplitude, so the associated gravity amplitude is manifestly permutation symmetric. The third virtue, while shared among all kno…
A recent result concerning interacting theories of self-dual tensor gauge fields in six dimensions is generalized to include coupling to gravity. The formalism makes five of the six general coordinate invariances manifest, whereas the sixth one requires a non-trivial analysis. The result should be helpful in formulating the world-volume action of the M theory five-brane.
We calculate the entropy of six dimensional Schwarzschild black holes in matrix theory. We use the description of the matrix model on $T^5$ as the world-volume theory of NS five-branes and show that the black hole entropy is reproduced by noncritical closed strings with fractional tension living on the five-brane.
In the context of six-dimensional supergravity there is a special class of parent models for five-dimensional theories defined by the four Euclidean simple Jordan algebras of degree 3. We extend this result to include six- dimensional parent models for three infinite families of five-dimensional theories defined by Minkowskian Jordan algebras. Connections of the six-dimensional models to F-theory constructions are constrained by anomaly cancellation conditions and the structure of the six-dimensional theory gauge group.
We study braneworlds in six-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. The Gauss-Bonnet term is crucial for the equations to be well-posed in six dimensions when non-trivial matter on the brane is included (the also involved induced gravity term is not significant for their structure), and the matching conditions of the braneworld are known. We show that the energy-momentum of the brane is always conserved, independently of any regular bulk energy-momentum tensor, contrary to the situation of the five-dimensional case.
The dimensional reduction of a generic theory on a curved internal space such as a sphere does not admit a consistent truncation to a finite set of fields that includes the Yang-Mills gauge bosons of the isometry group. In rare cases, for example the $S^7$ reduction of eleven-dimensional supergravity, such a consistent "Pauli reduction" does exist. In this paper we study this existence question in two examples of $S^2$ reductions of supergravities. We do this by making use of a relation between certain $S^2$ reductions and group manifold $S^3=SU(2)$ reductions of a theory in one dimension high…
We present five-loop results for the renormalization of various models with a cubic interaction (in ${d = 6 - 2 \varepsilon}$ dimensions). For the scalar model and its ${O(n)}$-symmetric extension we provide renormalization constants, anomalous dimensions and critical exponents. We discuss in detail the method of calculation, and provide all counterterms up to five loops. This allows one to consider generalizations of the ${φ^3}$ theory to other symmetries.
Color-ordered amplitudes for the scattering of n particles in the adjoint representation of SU(N) gauge theory satisfy constraints that arise from group theory alone. These constraints break into subsets associated with irreducible representations of the symmetric group S_n, which allows them to be presented in a compact and natural way. Using an iterative approach, we derive the constraints for six-point amplitudes at all loop orders, extending earlier results for n=4 and n=5. We then decompose the four-, five-, and six-point group-theory constraints into their irreducible S_n subspaces. We c…
Abelian 6d (2,0) theory has SO(5) R symmetry. We twist this theory by identifying the R symmetry group with the SO(5) subgroup of the SO(1,5) Lorentz group. This twisted theory can be put on any five-manifold M, times R, while preserving one scalar supercharge. We subsequently assume the existence of one unit normalized Killing vector field on M, and we find a corresponding SO(4) twist that preserves two supercharges and is a generalization of the geometric Langlands twist of 4d SYM. We generalize the story to non-Abelian gauge group for the corresponding 5d SYM theories on M. We derive a vani…
The equations of motion for a self-interacting self-dual tensor in six dimensions are extracted from the equations describing the M-theory five-brane. These equations are presented in a self-contained, six-dimensional Lorentz-covariant form. In particular, it is shown that the field-strength tensor satisfies a non-linear generalised self-duality constraint. The self-duality equation is rewritten in five-dimensional notation and shown to be identical to the corresponding equation in the non-covariant formalism.
We derive a general local form for supersymmetric solutions of six-dimensional (1,0) supergravity coupled to an arbitrary number of tensor multiplets. We consider some special cases in which the resulting equations can be solved explicitly. In particular we derive black string solutions and calculate their entropy. Upon reducing to five dimensions they yield spinning black hole solutions. We also discuss BPS pp-waves and black string solutions with traveling waves. Lastly, as an application, we study the attractor mechanism in this theory.

Fermion fields on an M-theory five-brane carry a representation of the double cover of the structure group of the normal bundle. It is shown that, on an arbitrary oriented Lorentzian six-manifold, there is always an Sp(2) twist that allows such spinors to be defined globally. The vanishing of the arising potential obstructions does not depend on spin structure in the bulk, nor does the six-manifold need to be spin or spin-C. Lifting the tangent bundle to such a generalised spin bundle requires picking a generalised spin structure in terms of certain elements in the integral and modulo-two coho…
Five-dimensional gauge and gravity theories are known to exhibit striking properties. D=5 is the lowest dimension where massive tensor states appear naturally, providing a testing ground for perturbative insights into six-dimensional tensor theories. Five-dimensional supergravities are highly constrained and admit elegant geometric and algebraic formulations, with global symmetries manifest at the Lagrangian level. In this paper, we take a step towards the systematic investigation of amplitudes in five dimensions, and present a five-dimensional version of the spinor-helicity formalism, applica…
Correlations between the momenta of the final state hadrons measured in proton or nucleus collisions contain information that sheds light on the initial conditions and evolutionary dynamics of the collision system. These correlation measurements have revealed the long-range rapidity correlations in p-p and p-Pb systems, and they have also made it possible to extract the elliptic flow coefficient from hadron correlation measurements. In this work, we calculate five- and six-gluon correlation functions in the framework of saturation physics by using superdiagrams. We also derive the cumulant exp…
We compute the planar part of the two-loop five gluon amplitude with all helicities positive. To perform the calculation we develop a D-dimensional generalized unitarity procedure allowing us to reconstruct the amplitude by cutting into products of six-dimensional trees. We find a compact form for the integrand which only requires topologies with six or more propagators. We perform cross checks of the universal infra-red structure using numerical integration techniques.
We investigate the structure of smooth and horizonless microstate geometries in six dimensions, in the spirit of the five-dimensional analysis of Gibbons and Warner [arXiv:1305.0957]. In six dimensions, which is the natural setting for horizonless geometries with the charges of the D1-D5-P black hole, the natural black objects are strings and there are no Chern-Simons terms for the tensor gauge fields. However, we still find that the same reasoning applies: in absence of horizons, there can be no smooth stationary solutions without non-trivial topology. We use topological arguments to describe…
We review aspects of twistor theory, its aims and achievements spanning thelast five decades. In the twistor approach, space--time is secondary with events being derived objects that correspond to compact holomorphic curves in a complex three--fold -- the twistor space. After giving an elementary construction of this space we demonstrate how solutions to linear and nonlinear equations of mathematical physics: anti-self-duality (ASD) equations on Yang--Mills, or conformal curvature can be encoded into twistor cohomology. These twistor correspondences yield explicit examples of Yang--Mills, and …
We present a generalization of the five dimensional multigravity models to six dimensions. The key characteristic of these constructions is that that we obtain solutions which do not have any negative tension branes while at the same time the branes are kept flat. This is due to the fact that in six dimensions the internal space is not trivial and its curvature allows bounce configurations with the above feature. These constructions give for the first time a theoretically and phenomenologically viable realization of multigravity.
In previous works (arXiv:1610.07916, arXiv:1711.07921, arXiv:1807.00186) we studied a class of toric Calabi-Yau threefolds which engineer six-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories with gauge group $U(N)$ and adjoint matter. The Kähler moduli space of these manifolds can be extended through flop transformations to include regions which are described by so-called shifted toric web diagrams. In this paper we analyse gauge theories that are engineered by these shifted toric web diagrams and argue that in specific limits, some of the them engineer five-dimensional quiver gauge theories with gau…
High-temperature expansions are presently the only viable approach to the numerical calculation of the higher susceptibilities for the spin and the scalar-field models on high-dimensional lattices. The critical amplitudes of these quantities enter into a sequence of universal amplitude-ratios which determine the critical equation of state. We have obtained a substantial extension through order 24, of the high-temperature expansions of the free energy (in presence of a magnetic field) for the Ising models with spin s >= 1/2 and for the lattice scalar field theory with quartic self-interaction, …
The connection of maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory to the (2,0) theory in six dimensions has raised the possibility that it might be perturbatively ultraviolet finite in five dimensions. We test this hypothesis by computing the coefficient of the first potential ultraviolet divergence of planar (large N_c) maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in D = 5, which occurs at six loops. We show that the coefficient is nonvanishing. Furthermore, the numerical value of the divergence falls very close to an approximate exponential formula based on the coefficients of the divergences throu…
We show how, via $T$-duality, intersecting $D$-Brane configurations in ten (six) dimensions can be obtained from the elementary $D$-Brane configurations by embedding a Type IIB $D$-Brane into a Type IIB Nine-Brane (Five-Brane) and give a classification of such configurations. We show that only a very specific subclass of these configurations can be realized as (supersymmetric) solutions to the equations of motion of IIA/IIB supergravity. Whereas the elementary $D$-brane solutions in $d=10$ are characterized by a single harmonic function, those in $d=6$ contain two independent harmonic function…
The proposal that a strong coupling limit of the five-dimensional type II string theory (M-theory compactified on a 6-torus) in which the Planck length becomes infinite could give a six-dimensional superconformal phase of M-theory is reviewed. This limit exists for the free theory, giving a 6-dimensional theory with (4,0) supersymmetry compactified on a circle whose radius gives the 5-dimensional Planck length. The free 6-dimensional theory has a fourth rank tensor gauge field with the symmetries of the Riemann tensor instead of a symmetric tensor gauge field, but its dimensional reduction giv…
We explicitly construct and list all unitary superconformal multiplets, along with their index contributions, in five and six dimensions. From this data, we uncover various unifying themes in the representation theory of five- and six-dimensional superconformal field theories. At the same time, we provide a detailed argument for the complete classification of unitary irreducible representations in five dimensions using a combination of physical and mathematical techniques.
We compute the one-loop Casimir energy of gravity and matter fields, obeying various boundary conditions, in 5-dimensional S^1/Z_2 and 6-dimensional T^2/Z_k orbifolds. We discuss the role of the Casimir energy in possible radius stabilization mechanisms and show that the presence of massive as well as massless fields can lead to minima with zero cosmological constant. In the 5-d orbifold, we also consider the case where kinetic terms localized at the fixed points are not small. We take into account their contribution to the Casimir energy and show that localized kinetic terms can also provide …
A massive version of T-duality in six dimensions is given, that maps the K3 compactification of Romans' theory onto the K3 compactification of Type IIB theory. This is done by performing a (standard) Kaluza-Klein reduction on six-dimensional massive Type IIA and a Scherk-Schwarz reduction on Type IIB, mapping both theories onto the same five-dimensional theory. We also comment shortly on the difficulties arising if one intends to construct a massive generalisation of the six-dimensional string-string duality.
More general constructions are given of six-dimensional theories that look at low energy like six-dimensional super Yang-Mills theory. The constructions start with either parallel fivebranes in Type IIB, or M-theory on $(\C^2\times§^1)/Γ$ for $Γ$ a suitable finite group. Via these constructions, one can obtain six-dimensional theories with any simple gauge group, and $SU(r)$ theories with any rational theta angle. A matrix construction of these theories is also possible.
We systematically analyze the effective action on the moduli space of (2,0) superconformal field theories in six dimensions, as well as their toroidal compactification to maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories in five and four dimensions. We present a streamlined approach to non-renormalization theorems that constrain this effective action. The first several orders in its derivative expansion are determined by a one-loop calculation in five-dimensional Yang-Mills theory. This fixes the leading higher-derivative operators that describe the renormalization group flow into theories residing…
We study the Penrose limit of the (p,q) fivebranes supergravity background. We consider the different phases of the worldvolume field theory and their weakly coupled descriptions. In the Penrose limit we get a solvable string theory and compute the spectrum. It corresponds to states of the six-dimensional worldvolume theory with large energy and large U(1) charge. We comment on the RG behavior of the gauge theory.
Theory of Supersymmetric Quantum Electrodynamics is extended by interactions with external vector and tensor backgrounds, that are assumed to be generated by some Lorentz-violating (LV) dynamics at an ultraviolet scale perhaps related to the Planck scale. Exact supersymmetry requires that such interactions correspond to LV operators of dimension five or higher, providing a solution to the naturalness problem in the LV sector. We classify all dimension five and six LV operators, analyze their properties at the quantum level and describe observational consequences of LV in this theory. We show t…
We describe properties of the M-theory five-brane containing $Q$ coincident self-dual strings on its worldvolume. This is the five-brane description of Q membranes ending on the five-brane. In particular, we consider a Maldacena-like low energy limit in the six-dimensional worldvolume which yields a near `horizon' description of the self-dual string using light open membranes, i.e. OM theory, in an AdS_3 x S^3 geometry.
The component form of the equations of motion for the 5-brane in eleven-dimensions is derived from the superspace equations. These equations are fully covariant in six-dimensions. It is shown that double-dimensional reduction of the bosonic equations gives the equations of motion for a 4-brane in ten dimensions governed by the Born-Infeld action.
We propose new five-dimensional gauge theory descriptions of six-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ superconformal field theories arising from type IIA brane configurations including an $ON^0$-plane. The new five-dimensional gauge theories may have $SO$, $Sp$, and $SU$ gauge groups and further broaden the landscape of ultraviolet complete five-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theories. When we include an $O8^-$-plane in addition to an $ON^0$-plane, T-duality yields two $O7^-$-planes at the intersections of an $ON^0$-plane and two $O5^0$-planes. We propose a novel resolution of the…
We consider superconformal field theories in three and six dimensions with eight supercharges which can be realized on the world-volume of M-theory branes sitting at orbifold singularities. We find that they should admit a N=4 and N=2 supergravity dual in AdS_4 and AdS_7, respectively. We discuss the characteristics of the corresponding gauged supergravities.
A free superstring with chiral N=2 supersymmetry in six dimensions is proposed. It couples to a two-form gauge field with a self-dual field strength. Compactification to four dimensions on a two-torus gives a strongly coupled N=4 four-dimensional gauge theory with SL(2, Z) duality and an infinite tower of dyons. Various authors have suggested that this string theory should be also the world-volume theory of M theory five-branes. Accepting this proposal, we find a puzzling factor of two in the application to black-hole entropy computations.
We compute the partition function of five-dimension Abelian sYM including a graviphoton term on a five-torus. The result agrees with Abelian M5 brane partition function with zero characteristics on an associated six-torus.
We consider the holographic dual of a general class of N=1* flows in which all three chiral multiplets have independent masses, and in which the corresponding Yang-Mills scalars can develop particular supersymmetry-preserving vevs. We also allow the gaugino to develop a vev. This leads to a six parameter subspace of the supergravity scalar action, and we show that this is a consistent truncation, and obtain a superpotential that governs the N=1* flows on this subspace. We analyse some of the structure of the superpotential, and check consistency with the asymptotic behaviour near the UV fixed …
We present the gravity dual of large N supersymmetric gauge theories on a squashed five-sphere. The one-parameter family of solutions is constructed in Euclidean Romans F(4) gauged supergravity in six dimensions, and uplifts to massive type IIA supergravity. By renormalizing the theory with appropriate counterterms we evaluate the renormalized on-shell action for the solutions. We also evaluate the large N limit of the gauge theory partition function, and find precise agreement.
We describe a compactification of the six-dimensional (2,0) theory on a four-sphere which gives rise to a two-dimensional Toda theory at long distances. This construction realizes chiral Toda fields as edge modes trapped near the poles of the sphere. We relate our setup to compactifications of the (2,0) theory on the five and six-sphere. In this way, we explain a connection between half-BPS operators of the (2,0) theory and two-dimensional W-algebras, and derive an equality between their conformal anomalies. As we explain, all such relationships between the six-dimensional (2,0) theory and Tod…
