Functions in backward shift invariant subspaces have nice analytic continuation properties outside the spectrum of the inner function defining the space. Inside the spectrum of the inner function, Ahern and Clark showed that under some distribution condition on the zeros and the singular measure of the inner function, it is possible to obtain non-tangential boundary values of every function in the backward shift invariant subspace as well as for their derivatives up to a certain order. Here we will investigate, at least when the inner function is a Blaschke product, the non-tangential boundary values of the functions of the backward shift invariant subspace after having applied a co-analytic (truncated) Toeplitz operator. There appears to be a smoothing effect.
We consider truncated Toeplitz operator on nearly invariant subspaces of the Hardy space $H^2$. Of some importance in this context is the boundary behavior of the functions in these spaces which we will discuss in some detail.
We prove the spectral mapping theorem $σ_e(A_ϕ) = ϕ(σ_e(A_z))$ for the Fredholm spectrum of a truncated Toeplitz operator $A_ϕ$ with symbol $ϕ$ in the Sarason algebra $C+H^\infty$ acting on a coinvariant subspace $K_θ$ of the Hardy space $H^2$. Our second result says that a truncated Hankel operator on the subspace $K_θ$ generated by a one-component inner function $θ$ is compact if and only if it has a continuous symbol. We also suppose a description of truncated Toeplitz and Hankel operators in Schatten classes $S^p$.
We prove several lower bounds for the norm of a truncated Toeplitz operator and obtain a curious relationship between the $H^2$ and $H^{\infty}$ norms of functions in model spaces.
In this note we discuss an open problem whether a truncated Toeplitz operator on a model space can be hypercyclic. We compute point spectrum and eigenfunctions for a class of truncated Toeplitz operators with polynomial analytic and antianalytic parts. We show that, for a class of model spaces, truncated Toeplitz operators with symbols of the form $Φ(z) =a \bar{z} +b + cz$, $|a| \ne |c|$, have complete sets of eigenvectors, and, in particular, are not hypercyclic.
We obtain an analogue of Coburn's description of the Toeplitz algebra in the setting of truncated Toeplitz operators. As a byproduct, we provide several examples of complex symmetric operators which are not unitarily equivalent to truncated Toeplitz operators having continuous symbols.
We examine when two maximal abelian algebras in the truncated Toeplitz operators are spatially isomorphic. This builds upon recent work of N. Sedlock, who obtained a complete description of the maximal algebras of truncated Toeplitz operators.
A truncated Toeplitz operator is the compression $A_ϕ:\K_Θ \to \K_Θ$ of a Toeplitz operator $T_ϕ:H^2\to H^2$ to a model space $\K_Θ := H^2 \ominus ΘH^2$. For $Θ$ inner, let $\T_Θ$ denote the set of all bounded truncated Toeplitz operators on $\K_Θ$. Our main result is a necessary and sufficient condition on inner functions $Θ_1$ and $Θ_2$ which guarantees that $\mathcal{T}_{Θ_1}$ and $\mathcal{T}_{Θ_2}$ are spatially isomorphic (i.e., $U\T_{Θ_1} = \T_{Θ_2}U$ for some unitary $U:\K_{Θ_1} \to \K_{Θ_2}$). We also study operators which are unitarily equivalent to truncated Toeplitz operators and w…
We investigate truncated Toeplitz operators belonging to the Schatten ideals. We completely characterize such operators when they have an analytic symbol or belong to the ideal of Hilbert-Schmidt operators. We also study model spaces generated by Blaschke products associated with thin sequences, model spaces generated by certain types of singular inner functions, and operators associated with a class of very smooth symbols.
We consider three problems connected with coinvariant subspaces of the backward shift operator in Hardy spaces $H^p$: 1) properties of truncated Toeplitz operators; 2) Carleson-type embedding theorems for the coinvariant subspaces; 3) factorizations of pseudocontinuable functions from $H^1$. These problems turn out to be closely connected and even, in a sense, equivalent. The new approach based on the factorizations allows us to answer a number of challenging questions about truncated Toeplitz operators posed by Donald Sarason.
Truncated Toeplitz operators and their asymmetric versions are studied in the context of the Hardy space $H^p$ of the half-plane for $1<p<\infty$. It is shown that they are equivalent after extension to $2 \times 2$ matricial Toeplitz operators, which allows one to deduce information about their invertibility properties. Shifted model spaces are presented in the context of invariant subspaces, allowing one to deduce new Beurling--Lax theorems.
Unlike Toeplitz operators on $H^2$, truncated Toeplitz operators do not have a natural matricial characterization. Consequently, these operators are difficult to study numerically. In this note we provide criteria for a matrix with distinct eigenvalues to be unitarily equivalent to a truncated Toeplitz operator having an analytic symbol. This test is constructive and we illustrate it with several examples. As a byproduct, we also prove that every complex symmetric operator on a Hilbert space of dimension $\leq 3$ is unitarily equivalent to a direct sum of truncated Toeplitz operators.
This paper is a survey on the emerging theory of truncated Toeplitz operators. We begin with a brief introduction to the subject and then highlight the many recent developments in the field since Sarason's seminal paper in 2007.
This paper gives a new approach to the calculation of the numerical radius of a restricted shift operator by linking it to the norm of a truncated Toeplitz operator (TTO), which can be be calculated by various methods. Further results on the norm of a TTO are derived, and a conjecture on the existence of continuous symbols for compact TTO is resolved.
We discuss the range spaces of Toeplitz operators with co-analytic symbols where we focus on the boundary behavior of the functions in these spaces as well as a natural orthogonal decomposition of this range.
In this note, we show that for hyponormal Toeplitz operators, there exists a lower bound for the area of the spectrum. This extends the known estimate for the spectral area of Toeplitz operators with an analytic symbol.
It is shown that the kernel of a Toeplitz operator with $2\times 2$ symbol $G$ can be described exactly in terms of any given function in a very wide class, its image under multiplication by $G$, and their left inverses, if the latter exist. As a consequence, under many circumstances the kernel of a block Toeplitz operator may be described as the product of a space of scalar complex-valued functions by a fixed column vector of functions. Such kernels are said to be of scalar type, and in this paper they are studied and described explicitly in many concrete situations. Applications are given to…
We study the intertwining relations between analytic Toeplitz operators induced on the Hardy space H^2 by analytic functions bounded on the open unit disc. Our work centers on the connection between intertwining between the Toeplitz operators the image containment between their symbols, as well as on the nature of the intertwining operator. We use our results to study the "extended eigenvalues" of analytic Toeplitz operators, i.e., the special case where the operator is intertwined with a scalar multiple of itself.
This tutorial paper presents a survey of results, both classical and new, linking inner functions and operator theory. Topics discussed include invariant subspaces, universal operators, Hankel and Toeplitz operators, model spaces, truncated Toeplitz operators, restricted shifts, numerical ranges, and interpolation.
In this study, we deal with the sharp bounds of certain Toeplitz determinants whose entries are the logarithmic coefficients of analytic univalent functions $f$ such that the quantity $z f'(z)/f(z)$ takes values in a specific domain lying in the right half plane. The established results provide the bounds for the classes of starlike and convex functions, as well as various of their subclasses.
In studying commutants of analytic Toeplitz operators, Thomson proved a remarkable theorem which states that under a mild condition, the commutant of an analytic Toeplitz operator is equal to that of Toeplitz operator defined by a finite Blaschke product. Cowen gave an significant improvement of Thosom's result. In this paper, we will present examples in Cowen's class which does not lie in Thomson's class.
We introduce new tools for analytic microlocal analysis on Kähler manifolds. As an application, we prove that the space of Berezin-Toeplitz operators with analytic contravariant symbol is an algebra. We also give a short proof of the Bergman kernel asymptotics up to an exponentially small error.
Let $\mathcal{S}$ denote the class of analytic and univalent functions in $\mathbb{D}:=\{z\in\mathbb{C}:\, |z|<1\}$ of the form $f(z)= z+\sum_{n=2}^{\infty}a_n z^n$. In this paper, we determine sharp estimates for the Toeplitz determinants whose elements are the Taylor coefficients of functions in $\mathcal{S}$ and its certain subclasses. We also discuss similar problems for typically real functions.
The Toeplitz operator acting on the Bergman space $A^{2}(\mathbb{D})$, with symbol $φ$ is given by $T_φf=P(φf)$, where $P$ is the projection from $L^{2}(\mathbb{D})$ onto the Bergman space. We present some history on the study of hyponormal Toeplitz operators acting on $A^{2}(\mathbb{D})$, as well as give results for when $φ$ is a non-harmonic polynomial. We include a first investigation of Putnam's inequality for hyponormal operators with non-analytic symbols. Particular attention is given to unusual hyponormality behavior that arises due to the extension of the class of allowed symbols.
A Toeplitz operator $T_φ$, $φ\in L^\infty(\mathbb{T}^n)$, is a partial isometry if and only if there exist inner functions $φ_1, φ_2 \in H^\infty(\mathbb{D}^n)$ such that $φ_1$ and $φ_2$ depends on different variables and $φ= \barφ_1 φ_2$. In particular, for $n=1$, along with new proof, this recovers a classical theorem of Brown and Douglas. \noindent We also prove that a partially isometric Toeplitz operator is hyponormal if and only if the corresponding symbol is an inner function in $H^\infty(\mathbb{D}^n)$. Moreover, partially isometric Toeplitz operators are always power partial isometry …
This paper examines the coefficient problems for the class of semigroup generators, a topic in complex dynamics that has recently been studied in context of geometric function theory. Further, sharp bounds of coefficient functional such as second order Hankel determinant, third order Toeplitz and Hermitian-Toeplitz determinants are derived. Additionally, the sharp growth estimates and the bounds of difference of successive coefficients are determined, which are used to prove the Bohr and the Bohr-Rogosinski phenomenon for the class of semigroup generators.
Using the approach based on sesquilinear forms, we introduce Toeplitz operator in the analytic Bergman space on the upper half-plane with strongly singular symbols, derivatives of measures. Conditions for boundedness and compactness of such operators are found. A procedure of reduction of Toeplitz operators in Bergman spaces of polyanalytic functions to operators with singular symbols in the analytic Bergman space by means of the creation-annihilation structure is elaborated, which leads to the description of the properties of the former operators
For the classes of analytic functions $f$ defined on the unit disk satisfying $$\frac{z {f}'(z)}{f(z) - f(-z)} \prec φ(z) \quad \text{and} \quad \frac{(2 z {f}'(z))'}{(f(z) - f(-z))'} \prec φ(z),$$ denoted by $\mathcal{S}^*_s(φ)$ and $\mathcal{C}_s(φ)$ respectively, the sharp bound of the $n^{th}$ Taylor coefficients are known for $n=2,$ $3$ and $4$. In this paper, we obtain the sharp bound of the fifth coefficient. Additionally, the sharp lower and upper estimates of the third order Hermitian Toeplitz determinant for the functions belonging to these classes are determined. The applications of…
This paper mainly studies totally Abelian operators in the context of analytic Toeplitz operators on both the Hardy and Bergman space. When the symbol is a meromorphic function on $\mathbb{C}$, we establish the connection between totally Abelian property of these operators and and geometric properties of their symbol curves. It is found that winding numbers and multiplicities of self-intersection of symbol curves play an important role in this topic. Techniques of group theory, complex analysis, geometry and operator theory are intrinsic in this paper. As a byproduct, under a mild condition we…
We characterize the common range of the adjoints of cyclic multiplication operators on the Drury--Arveson space. We show that a function belongs to this common range if and only if its Taylor coefficients satisfy a simple decay condition. To achieve this, we introduce the uniform Smirnov class on the ball and determine its dual space. We show that the dual space of the uniform Smirnov class equals the dual space of the strictly smaller Smirnov class of the Drury-Arveson space, and that this in turn equals the common range of the adjoints of cyclic multiplication operators.
We introduce a new class of conjugations and characterize complex symmetric Toeplitz operators on the Hardy space with respect to those conjugations. Also, we prove that complex symmetricity and \uet~ property are the same for a certain class of Toeplitz operators. We also discuss the analytic symmetricity for Toeplitz operators. Our results extend several known results by providing unified ways of treating them.
We study the boundedness of Toeplitz operators $T_ψ$ with locally integrable symbols on weighted harmonic Bergman spaces over the unit ball of $\mathbb{R}^n$. Generalizing earlier results for analytic function spaces, we derive a general sufficient condition for the boundedness of $T_ψ$ in terms of suitable averages of its symbol. We also obtain a similar "vanishing" condition for compactness. Finally, we show how these results can be transferred to the setting of the standard weighted Bergman spaces of analytic functions.
It is proved an inequality - integrated analogue of the Hardy inequality and as application simplified proof of the theorem of S. A. Vinogradov for the bounded Toeplitz operators on the space of functions analytic and bounded in the unit disc is given.
We study hypercyclicity of Toeplitz operators in the Hardy space $H^2(\mathbb{D})$ with symbols of the form $R(\overline{z}) +ϕ(z)$, where $R$ is a rational function and $ϕ\in H^\infty(\mathbb{D})$. We relate this problem to cyclicity of certain families of functions for analytic Toeplitz operators and give new sufficient conditions for hypercyclicity based on deep results of B. Solomyak.
The definition of Toeplitz operators in the Bergman space $A^2(D)$ of square integrable analytic functions in the unit disk in the complex plane is extended in such way that it covers many cases where the traditional definition does not work. This includes, in particular, highly singular symbols such as measures, distributions, and certain hyper-functions.
A two-point algebra is a set of bounded analytic functions on the unit disk that agree at two distinct points $a,b \in \mathbb{D}$. This algebra serves as a multiplier algebra for the family of Hardy Hilbert spaces $H^2_t := \{ f\in H^2 : f(a)=tf(b)\}$, where $t\in \mathbb{C}\cup\{\infty\}$. We show that various spectra of certain Toeplitz operators acting on these spaces are connected.
We investigate mapping properties for the Bargmann transform on modulation spaces whose weights and their reciprocals are allowed to grow faster than exponentials. We prove that this transform is isometric and bijective from modulation spaces to convenient Lebesgue spaces of analytic functions. We use this to prove that such modulation spaces fulfill most of the continuity properties which are well-known when the weights are moderated. Finally we use the results to establish continuity properties of Toeplitz and pseudo-differential operators in the context of these modulation spaces.
In this paper, we characterize invertible Toeplitz products on a number of Banach spaces of analytic functions, including weighted Bergman space $L^p_a (\mathbb{B}_n, dv_γ)$, the Hardy space $H^p(\partial \mathbb{D})$, and the weighted Fock space F${}_α^p$ for $p > 1$. The common tool in the proofs of our characterizations will be the theory of weighted norm inequalities and A${}_p$ type weights. Moreover, we analyze and compare the various A${}_p$ type conditions that arise in our characterizations. Finally, we extend the "reverse Hölder inequality" of Zheng and Stroethoff \cite{SZ1, SZ2} for…
We consider the $\dbar-$ equation in $\C^1$ in classes of functions with Gaussian decay at infinity. We prove that if the right-hand side of the equation is majorated by $\exp(-q|z|^2)$, with some positive $q$, together with derivatives up to some order, and is orthogonal, as a distribution, to all analytical polynomials, then there exists a solution with decays, together with derivatives, as $\exp(-q'|z|^2)$, for any $q'<q/e$. This result carries over to the $\dbar$-equation in classes of distributions, again, with Gaussian decay at infinity, in some precisely defined sense. The properties of…
