A Toeplitz operator $T_φ$, $φ\in L^\infty(\mathbb{T}^n)$, is a partial isometry if and only if there exist inner functions $φ_1, φ_2 \in H^\infty(\mathbb{D}^n)$ such that $φ_1$ and $φ_2$ depends on different variables and $φ= \barφ_1 φ_2$. In particular, for $n=1$, along with new proof, this recovers a classical theorem of Brown and Douglas.
\noindent We also prove that a partially isometric Toeplitz operator is hyponormal if and only if the corresponding symbol is an inner function in $H^\infty(\mathbb{D}^n)$. Moreover, partially isometric Toeplitz operators are always power partial isometry (following Halmos and Wallen), and hence, up to unitary equivalence, a partially isometric Toeplitz operator with symbol in $L^\infty(\mathbb{T}^n)$, $n > 1$, is either a shift, or a co-shift, or a direct sum of truncated shifts. Along the way, we prove that $T_φ$ is a shift whenever $φ$ is inner in $H^\infty(\mathbb{D}^n)$.
The celebrated Sz.-Nagy and Foias and Ando theorems state that a single contraction, or a pair of commuting contractions, acting on a Hilbert space always possesses isometric dilation and subsequently satisfies the von Neumann inequality for polynomials in $\mathbb{C}[z]$ or $\mathbb{C}[z_1, z_2]$, respectively. However, in general, neither the existence of isometric dilation nor the von Neumann inequality holds for $n$-tuples, $n \geq 3$, of commuting contractions. The goal of this paper is to provide a taste of the isometric dilations, the von Neumann inequality and a sharper version of von …
When is the collection of $\mathsf S$-Toeplitz operators with respect to a tuple of commuting bounded operators $\mathsf S= (S_1, S_2, \ldots , S_{d-1}, P)$, which has the symmetrized polydisc as a spectral set, non-trivial? The answer is in terms of powers of $P$ as well as in terms of a unitary extension. En route, Brown-Halmos relations are investigated. A commutant lifting theorem is established. Finally, we establish a general result connecting the $C^*$-algebra generated by the commutant of $\mathsf S$ and the commutant of its unitary extension $\mathsf R$.
We initiate a study of asymptotic Toeplitz operators on the Hardy space $H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$ (over the unit polydisc $\mathbb{D}^n$ in $\mathbb{C}^n$). We also study the Toeplitz operators in the polydisc setting. Our main results on Toeplitz and asymptotic Toeplitz operators can be stated as follows: Let $T_{z_i}$ denote the multiplication operator on $H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$ by the $i^{th}$ coordinate function $z_i$, $i =1, \ldots, n$, and let $T$ be a bounded linear operator on $H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$. Then the following hold: (i) $T$ is a Toeplitz operator (that is, $T = P_{H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)} M_φ|_{…
We present complete characterizations of Toeplitz operators that are complex symmetric. This follows as a by-product of characterizations of conjugations on Hilbert spaces. Notably, we prove that every conjugation admits a canonical factorization. As a consequence, we prove that a Toeplitz operator is complex symmetric if and only if the Toeplitz operator is $S$-Toeplitz for some unilateral shift $S$ and the transpose of the Toeplitz operator matrix is equal to the matrix of the Toeplitz operator corresponding to the basis of the unilateral shift $S$. Also, we characterize complex symmetric To…
Let $Ω$ be either the unit polydisc $\mathbb D^d$ or the unit ball $\mathbb B_d$ in $\mathbb C^d$ and $G$ be a finite pseudoreflection group which acts on $Ω.$ Associated to each one-dimensional representation $\varrho$ of $G,$ we provide a notion of the (weighted) Hardy space $H^2_\varrho(Ω/G)$ on $Ω/G.$ Subsequently, we show that each $H^2_\varrho(Ω/G)$ is isometrically isomorphic to the relative invariant subspace of $H^2(Ω)$ associated to the representation $\varrho.$ For $Ω=\mathbb D^d,$ $G=\mathfrak{S}_d,$ the permutation group on $d$ symbols and $\varrho = $ the sign representation of $…
We establish connections between Schur parameters of the Schur class operator-valued functions, the corresponding simple conservative realizations, lower triangular Toeplitz matrices, and Kre\uın shorted operators. By means of Schur parameters or shorted operators for defect operators of Toeplitz matrices necessary and sufficient conditions for a simple conservative discrete-time system to be controllable/observable and for a completely non-unitary contraction to be completely non-isometric/completely non-co-isometric are obtained. For the Schur problem a characterization of central solution a…
A family $\{T_j\}_{j\in J}$ of commuting Hilbert space operators is said to be a spherical isometry if $\sum_{j\in J}T^*_jT_j=1$ in the weak operator topology. We show that every commuting family $\Cal F$ of spherical isometries has a commuting normal extension $\hat{\Cal F}$. Moreover, if $\hat{\Cal F}$ is minimal, then there exists a natural short exact sequence $0\to\Cal C\to C^*(\Cal F)\to C^*(\hat{\Cal F})\to 0$ with a completely isometric cross-section, where $\Cal C$ is the commutator ideal in $C^*(\Cal F)$. We also show that the space of Toeplitz operators associated to $\Cal F$ is com…
In this paper we show that the C*-algebra generated by radial Toeplitz operators with $L_{\infty}$-symbols acting on the Fock space is isometrically isomorphic to the C*-algebra of bounded sequences uniformly continuous with respect to the square-root-metric $ρ(j,k)=|\sqrt{\vphantom{jk}j}-\sqrt{\vphantom{jk}k}\,|$. More precisely, we prove that the sequences of eigenvalues of radial Toeplitz operators form a dense subset of the latter C*-algebra of sequences.
We investigate mapping properties for the Bargmann transform on modulation spaces whose weights and their reciprocals are allowed to grow faster than exponentials. We prove that this transform is isometric and bijective from modulation spaces to convenient Lebesgue spaces of analytic functions. We use this to prove that such modulation spaces fulfill most of the continuity properties which are well-known when the weights are moderated. Finally we use the results to establish continuity properties of Toeplitz and pseudo-differential operators in the context of these modulation spaces.
Our purpose is to characterize the so-called horizontal Fock-Carleson type measures for derivatives of order $k$ (we write it $k$-hFC for short) for the Fock space as well as the Toeplitz operators generated by sesquilinear forms given by them. The boundedness conditions for such operators are found. We introduce real coderivatives of $k$-hFC type measures and show that the C*-algebra generated by Toeplitz operators with the corresponding class of symbols is commutative and isometrically isomorphic to certain $C^*$-subalgebra of $L_{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$. The above results are extended to m…
Let $S$ be the shift operator on the Hardy space $H^2$ and let $S^*$ be its adjoint. A closed subspace $\FF$ of $H^2$ is said to be nearly $S^*$-invariant if every element $f\in\FF$ with $f(0)=0$ satisfies $S^*f\in\FF$. In particular, the kernels of Toeplitz operators are nearly $S^*$-invariant subspaces. Hitt gave the description of these subspaces. They are of the form $\FF=g (H^2\ominus u H^2)$ with $g\in H^2$ and $u$ inner, $u(0)=0$. A very particular fact is that the operator of multiplication by $g$ acts as an isometry on $H^2\ominus uH^2$. Sarason obtained a characterization of the func…
This paper studies matrix-valued truncated Toeplitz operators, which are a vectorial generalisation of truncated Toeplitz operators. It is demonstrated that, although there exist matrix-valued truncated Toeplitz operators without a matrix symbol in $L^p$ for any $p \in (2, \infty ]$, there is a wide class of matrix-valued truncated Toeplitz operators which possess a matrix symbol in $L^p$ for some $p \in (2, \infty ]$. In the case when the matrix-valued truncated Toeplitz operator has a symbol in $L^p$ for some $p \in (2, \infty ]$, an approach is developed which bypasses some of the technical…
In this paper we first study the structure of the scalar and vector-valued nearly invariant subspaces with a finite defect. We then subsequently produce some fruitful applications of our new results. We produce a decomposition theorem for the vector-valued nearly invariant subspaces with a finite defect. More specifically, we show every vector-valued nearly invariant subspace with a finite defect can be written as the isometric image of a backwards shift invariant subspace. We also show that there is a link between the vector-valued nearly invariant subspaces and the scalar-valued nearly invar…
The Fock space $\mathcal{F}(\mathbb{C}^n)$ is the space of holomorphic functions on $\mathbb{C}^n$ that are square-integrable with respect to the Gaussian measure on $\mathbb{C}^n$. This space plays an important role in several subfields of analysis and representation theory. In particular, it has for a long time been a model to study Toeplitz operators. Esmeral and Maximenko showed in 2016 that radial Toeplitz operators on $\mathcal{F}(\mathbb{C})$ generate a commutative $C^*$-algebra which is isometrically isomorphic to the $C^*$-algebra $C_{b,u}(\mathbb{N}_0,ρ_1)$. In this article, we exten…

The validity of the von-Neumann inequality for commuting $n$ - tuples of $3\times 3$ matrices remains open for $n\geq 3$. We give a partial answer to this question, which is used to obtain a necessary condition for the Carathéodory-Fejér interpolation problem on the polydisc $\mathbb D^n.$ In the special case of $n=2$ (which follows from Ando's theorem as well), this necessary condition is made explicit. An alternative approach to the Carathéodory-Fejér interpolation problem, in the special case of $n=2,$ adapting a theorem of Korányi and Pukánzsky is given. As a consequence, a class of polyno…
