We study the phase diagram of scalar field theory on a three dimensional Euclidean spacetime whose spatial component is a fuzzy sphere. The corresponding model is an ordinary one-dimensional matrix model deformed by terms involving fixed external matrices. These terms can be approximated by multitrace expressions using a group theoretical method developed recently. The resulting matrix model is accessible to the standard techniques of matrix quantum mechanics.
Uniform order phase and phase diagram of scalar field theory on fuzzy $\mathbb C P^n$
Guided by ordinary quantum mechanics we introduce new fuzzy spheres of dimensions d=1,2: we consider an ordinary quantum particle in D=d+1 dimensions subject to a rotation invariant potential well V(r) with a very sharp minimum on a sphere of unit radius. Imposing a sufficiently low energy cutoff to `freeze' the radial excitations makes only a finite-dimensional Hilbert subspace accessible and on it the coordinates noncommutative à la Snyder; in fact, on it they generate the whole algebra of observables. The construction is equivariant not only under rotations - as Madore's fuzzy sphere -, but…
We apply the modern Batalin-Vilkovisky quantization techniques of Costello and Gwilliam to noncommutative field theories in the finite-dimensional case of fuzzy spaces. We further develop a generalization of this framework to theories that are equivariant under a triangular Hopf algebra symmetry, which in particular leads to quantizations of finite-dimensional analogs of the field theories proposed recently through the notion of `braided $L_\infty$-algebras'. The techniques are illustrated by computing perturbative correlation functions for scalar and Chern-Simons theories on the fuzzy $2$-sph…
We review the description of scalar field theories on fuzzy spaces by Hermitian random matrix models. After reminding the reader of the relevant aspects of the random matrix theory and construction of the fuzzy spaces, we summarize the most important results for the scalar fields on such spaces. We then introduce the multi-trace matrix models relevant for the analytical description of scalar field theories on fuzzy spaces and show to what extent they do, and to what extent they do not, describe the know phase structure of $ϕ^4$ theory on the fuzzy sphere.
The model of a scalar field with quartic self-interaction on the fuzzy sphere has three known phases: a uniformly ordered phase, a disordered phase and a non-uniformly ordered phase, the last of which has no classical counterpart. These three phases are expected to meet at a triple point. By studying the infinite matrix size limit, we locate the position of this triple point to within a small triangle in terms of the parameters of the model. We find the triple point is closer to the coordinate origin of the phase diagram than previous estimates but broadly consistent with recent analytic predi…
Scalar fields appear in many cosmological models, in particular in order to provide explanations for dark energy and inflation, but also to emulate dark matter. In this paper, we show that it is possible for a scalar field to replace simultaneously dark matter, dark energy and inflation by assuming the existence of a non-minimal coupling to gravity, a Mexican hat potential, and a spontaneous symmetry breaking before inflation. After inflation, the scalar field behaves like a dark fluid, mimicking dark energy and dark matter, and has a dark matter behaviour similar to fuzzy dark matter.
Quantum field theory defined on a noncommutative space is a useful toy model of quantum gravity and is known to have several intriguing properties, such as nonlocality and UV/IR mixing. They suggest novel types of correlation among the degrees of freedom of different energy scales. In this paper, we investigate such correlations by the use of entanglement entropy in the momentum space. We explicitly evaluate the entanglement entropy of scalar field theory on a fuzzy sphere and find that it exhibits different behaviors from that on the usual continuous sphere. We argue that these differences wo…
We consider the matrix regularization of scalar fields on a Riemann surface with a general gauge-field background. We propose a construction of the fuzzy version of the Laplacian.
Projecting a quantum theory onto the Hilbert subspace of states with energies below a cutoff $\overline{E}$ may lead to an effective theory with modified observables, including a noncommutative space(time). Adding a confining potential well $V$ with a very sharp minimum on a submanifold $N$ of the original space(time) $M$ may induce a dimensional reduction to a noncommutative quantum theory on $N$. Here in particular we briefly report on our application of this procedure to spheres $S^d\subset\mathbb{R}^D$ of radius $r=1$ ($D=d\!+\!1>1$): making $\overline{E}$ and the depth of the well depend …

We consider a U(2) Yang-Mills theory on M x S_F^2 where M is an arbitrary noncommutative manifold and S_F^2 is a fuzzy sphere spontaneously generated from a noncommutative U(N) Yang-Mills theory on M, coupled to a triplet of scalars in the adjoint of U(N). Employing the SU(2)-equivariant gauge field constructed in arXiv:0905.2338, we perform the dimensional reduction of the theory over the fuzzy sphere. The emergent model is a noncommutative U(1) gauge theory coupled adjointly to a set of scalar fields. We study this model on the Groenewald-Moyal plane and find that, in certain limits, it admi…
Fuzzy hyperspheres $S^d_Λ$ of dimension $d>2$ are constructed here generalizing the procedure adopted in [G. Fiore, F. Pisacane, J. Geom. Phys. 132 (2018), 423-451] for $d=1,2$. The starting point is an ordinary quantum particle in $\mathbb{R}^D$, $D:=d+1$, subject to a rotation invariant potential well $V(r)$ with a very sharp minimum on the sphere of radius $r=1$. The subsequent imposition of a sufficiently low energy cutoff `freezes' the radial excitations, this makes only a finite-dimensional Hilbert subspace $\mathcal{H}_{Λ,D}$ accessible and on it the coordinates noncommutative {\it à la…
We briefly report our recent construction of new fuzzy spheres of dimensions d=1,2 covariant under the full orthogonal group O(D), D=d+1. They are built by imposing a suitable energy cutoff on a quantum particle in D dimensions subject to a confining potential well V(r) with a very sharp minimum on the sphere of radius r=1; furthermore, the cutoff and the depth of the well depend on (and diverge with) a natural number L. The commutator of the coordinates depends only on the angular momentum, as in Snyder noncommutative spaces. When L diverges, the Hilbert space dimension diverges, too; S^d_L c…
We review analytical approaches to scalar field theory on fuzzy spaces. We briefly outline the matrix description of these theories and describe various approximations to the relevant matrix model. We discuss the challenge of obtaining a consistent approximation that includes the higher moments of the theory.
