The phi^4 real scalar field theory on a fuzzy sphere is studied numerically. We refine the phase diagram for this model where three distinct phases are known to exist: a uniformly ordered phase, a disordered phase, and a non-uniform ordered phase where the spatial SO(3) symmetry of the round sphere is spontaneously broken and which has no classical equivalent. The three coexistence lines between these phases, which meet at a triple point, are carefully located with particular attention paid to the one between the two ordered phases and the triple point itself. In the neighbourhood of the triple point all phase boundaries are well approximated by straight lines which, surprisingly, have the same scaling. We argue that unless an additional term is added to enhance the effect of the kinetic term the infinite matrix limit of this model will not correspond to a real scalar field on the commutative sphere or plane.
We study and analyse the questions regarding breakdown of global symmetry on noncommutative sphere. We demonstrate this by considering a complex scalar field on a fuzzy sphere and isolating Goldstone modes. We discuss the role of nonlocal interactions present in these through geometrical considerations.
We study a 4d supersymmetric matrix model with a cubic term, which incorporates fuzzy spheres as classical solutions, using Monte Carlo simulations and perturbative calculations. The fuzzy sphere in the supersymmetric model turns out to be always stable if the large-N limit is taken in such a way that various correlation functions scale. This is in striking contrast to analogous bosonic models, where the fuzzy sphere decays into the pure Yang-Mills vacuum due to quantum effects when the coefficient of the cubic term becomes smaller than a critical value. We also find that the power-law tail of…
We find using Monte Carlo simulation the phase structure of noncommutative U(1) gauge theory in two dimensions with the fuzzy sphere S^2_N as a non-perturbative regulator. There are three phases of the model. i) A matrix phase where the theory is essentially SU(N) Yang-Mills reduced to zero dimension . ii) A weak coupling fuzzy sphere phase with constant specific heat and iii) A strong coupling fuzzy sphere phase with non-constant specific heat. The order parameter distinguishing the matrix phase from the sphere phase is the radius of the fuzzy sphere. The three phases meet at a triple point. …
The critical properties of the real phi^4 scalar field theory are studied numerically on the fuzzy sphere. The fuzzy sphere is a matrix (non commutative) discretisation of the algebra of functions on the usual two dimensional sphere. It is also one of the simplest examples of a non commutative space to study field theory on. Aside from the usual disordered and uniform phases present in the commutative scalar field theory, we find and discuss in detail a new phase with spontaneously broken rotational invariance, called matrix phase because the geometry of the fuzzy sphere, as expressed by the k…
We investigate several properties of Ginsparg-Wilson fermion on fuzzy 2-sphere. We first examine chiral anomaly up to the second order of the gauge field and show that it is indeed reduced to the correct form of the Chern character in the commutative limit. Next we study topologically non-trivial gauge configurations and their topological charges. We investigate 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole type configuration on fuzzy 2-sphere and show that it has the correct commutative limit. We also consider more general configurations in our formulation.
Fuzzy spheres appear as classical solutions in a matrix model obtained via dimensional reduction of 3-dimensional Yang-Mills theory with the Chern-Simons term. Well-defined perturbative expansion around these solutions can be formulated even for finite matrix size, and in the case of $k$ coincident fuzzy spheres it gives rise to a regularized U($k$) gauge theory on a noncommutative geometry. Here we study the matrix model nonperturbatively by Monte Carlo simulation. The system undergoes a first order phase transition as we change the coefficient ($α$) of the Chern-Simons term. In the small $α$…
We study renormalization on the fuzzy sphere, which is a typical example of non-commutative spaces. We numerically simulate a scalar field theory on the fuzzy sphere, which is described by a Hermitian matrix model. We define correlation functions by using the Berezin symbol and show that they are made independent of the matrix size, which plays a role of a UV cutoff, by tuning one parameter of the theory. We also find that the theories on the phase boundary are universal. They behave as a conformal field theory at short distances, while they universally differ from it at long distances due to …
We study renormalization on the fuzzy sphere. We numerically simulate a scalar field theory on it, which is described by a Hermitian matrix model. We show that correlation functions defined by using the Berezin symbol are made independent of the matrix size, which is viewed as a UV cutoff, by tuning a parameter of the theory. We also find that the theories on the phase boundary are universal. They behave as a conformal field theory at short distances, while they show an effect of UV/IR mixing at long distances.
We explore a new way to simulate quantum field theory, without introducing a spatial lattice. As a pilot study we apply this method to the 3d λϕ^4 model. The regularisation consists of a fuzzy sphere with radius R for the two spatial directions, plus a discrete Euclidean time. The fuzzy sphere approximates the algebra of functions of the sphere with a matrix algebra, and the scalar field is represented by a Hermitian N x N matrix at each time site. We evaluate the phase diagram, where we find a disordered phase and an ordered regime, which splits into phases of uniform and non-uniform order. W…
We study renormalization in a scalar field theory on the fuzzy sphere. The theory is realized by a matrix model, where the matrix size plays the role of a UV cutoff. We define correlation functions by using the Berezin symbol identified with a field and calculate them nonperturbatively by Monte Carlo simulation. We find that the 2-point and 4-point functions are made independent of the matrix size by tuning a parameter and performing a wave function renormalization. The results strongly suggest that the theory is nonperturbatively renormalizable in the ordinary sense.
The model of a scalar field with quartic self-interaction on the fuzzy sphere has three known phases: a uniformly ordered phase, a disordered phase and a non-uniformly ordered phase, the last of which has no classical counterpart. These three phases are expected to meet at a triple point. By studying the infinite matrix size limit, we locate the position of this triple point to within a small triangle in terms of the parameters of the model. We find the triple point is closer to the coordinate origin of the phase diagram than previous estimates but broadly consistent with recent analytic predi…
We regularise the 3d λϕ^4 model by discretising the Euclidean time and representing the spatial part on a fuzzy sphere. The latter involves a truncated expansion of the field in spherical harmonics. This yields a numerically tractable formulation, which constitutes an unconventional alternative to the lattice. In contrast to the 2d version, the radius R plays an independent rôle. We explore the phase diagram in terms of R and the cutoff, as well as the parameters m^2 and λ. Thus we identify the phases of disorder, uniform order and non-uniform order. We compare the result to the phase diagrams…
As a perturbative check of the construction of four-dimensional (4D) ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory (SYM) from mass deformed ${\cal N}=(8,8)$ SYM on the two-dimensional (2D) lattice, the one-loop effective action for scalar kinetic terms is computed in ${\cal N}=4$ $U(k)$ SYM on ${\mathbb R}^2 \times$ (fuzzy $S^2$), which is obtained by expanding 2D ${\cal N}=(8,8)$ $U(N)$ SYM with mass deformation around its fuzzy sphere classical solution. The radius of the fuzzy sphere is proportional to the inverse of the mass. We consider two successive limits: (1) decompactify the fuzzy sp…
A detailed Monte Carlo calculation of the phase diagram of bosonic IKKT Yang-Mills matrix models in three and six dimensions with quartic mass deformations is given. Background emergent fuzzy geometries in two and four dimensions are observed with a fluctuation given by a noncommutative $U(1)$ gauge theory very weakly coupled to normal scalar fields. The geometry, which is determined dynamically, is given by the fuzzy spheres ${\bf S}^2_N$ and ${\bf S}^2_N\times{\bf S}^2_N$ respectively. The three and six matrix models are in the same universality class with some differences. For example, in t…
We investigate chiral anomaly for fermions in fundamental representation on noncommutative (fuzzy) 2-sphere. In spite that this system is realized by finite dimensional matrices and no regularization is necessary for either UV or IR, we can reproduce the correct chiral anomaly which is consistent with the calculations done in flat noncommutative space. Like the flat case, there are ambiguities to define chiral currents. We define chiral currents in a gauge-invariant way and a gauge-covariant way, and show that the corresponding anomalous chiral Ward-Takahashi identities take different forms. T…
We consider a gauge-Higgs system on a fuzzy 2-sphere and study the topological structure of gauge configurations, when the U(2) gauge symmetry is spontaneously broken to U(1) times U(1) by the vev of the Higgs field. The topology is classified by the index of the Dirac operator satisfying the Ginsparg-Wilson relation, which turns out to be a noncommutative analog of the topological charge introduced by 't Hooft. It can be rewritten as a form whose commutative limit becomes the winding number of the Higgs field. We also study conditions which assure the validity of the formulation, and give a g…
We study the spontaneous symmetry breaking of O(3) scalar field on a fuzzy sphere $S_F^2$. We find that the fluctuations in the background of topological configurations are finite. This is in contrast to the fluctuations around a uniform configuration which diverge, due to Mermin-Wagner-Hohenberg-Coleman theorem, leading to the decay of the condensate. Interesting implications of enhanced topological stability of the configurations are pointed out.
We clarify some peculiar aspects of the perturbative expansion around a classical fuzzy-sphere solution in matrix models with a cubic term. While the effective action in the large-N limit is saturated at the one-loop level, we find that the ``one-loop dominance'' does not hold for generic observables due to one-particle reducible diagrams. However, we may exploit the one-loop dominance for the effective action and obtain various observables to all orders from one-loop calculation by simply shifting the center of expansion to the ``quantum solution'', which extremizes the effective action. We c…
The properties of the phi^4 scalar field theory on a fuzzy sphere are studied numerically. The fuzzy sphere is a discretization of the sphere through matrices in which the symmetries of the space are preserved. This model presents three different phases: uniform and disordered phases, as in the usual commutative scalar field theory, and a non-uniform ordered phase related to UV-IR mixing like non-commutative effects. We have determined the coexistence lines between phases, their triple point and their scaling.
We formulate a Ginsparg-Wilson relation on a fuzzy 2-sphere for matter in the adjoint representation of the gauge group. Because of the Ginsparg-Wilson relation, an index theorem is satisfied. Our formulation is applicable to topologically nontrivial configurations as monopoles. It gives a solid basis for obtaining chiral fermions, which are an important ingredient of the standard model, from matrix model formulations of the superstring theory, such as the IIB matrix model, by considering topological configurations in the extra dimensions. We finally discuss whether this mechanism really works…
We study thermodynamical properties of a fuzzy sphere in matrix quantum mechanics of the BFSS type including the Chern-Simons term. Various quantities are calculated to all orders in perturbation theory exploiting the one-loop saturation of the effective action in the large-N limit. The fuzzy sphere becomes unstable at sufficiently strong coupling, and the critical point is obtained explicitly as a function of the temperature. The whole phase diagram is investigated by Monte Carlo simulation. Above the critical point, we obtain perfect agreement with the all order results. In the region below …
We study finite temperature phase transition of neutral scalar field on a fuzzy sphere using Monte Carlo simulations. We work with the zero mode in the temporal directions, while the effects of the higher modes are taken care by the temperature dependence of r. In the numerical calculations we use "pseudo-heatbath" method which reduces the auto-correlation considerably. Our results agree with the conventional calculations. We report some new results which show the presence of meta-stable states and also suggest that for suitable choice of parameters the symmetry breaking transition is of first…
The spin 1/2 Dirac operator and its chirality operator on the fuzzy 2-sphere $S^2_F$ can be constructed using the Ginsparg-Wilson(GW) algebra [arxiv:hep-th/0511114]. This construction actually exists for any spin $j$ on $S^2_F$, and have continuum analogues as well on the commutative sphere $S^2$ or on $\mathbb{R}^{2}$. This is a remarkable fact and has no known analogue in higher dimensional Minkowski spaces. We study such operators on $S^2_F$ and the commutative $S^2$ and formulate criteria for the existence of the limit from the former to the latter. This singles out certain fuzzy versions …
In the previous paper hep-th/0312199 we studied the 't Hooft-Polyakov (TP) monopole configuration in the U(2) gauge theory on the fuzzy 2-sphere and showed that it has a nonzero topological charge in the formalism based on the Ginsparg-Wilson relation. In this paper, by showing that the TP monopole configuration is stabler than the U(2) gauge theory without any condensation in the Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons matrix model, we will present a mechanism for dynamical generation of a nontrivial index. We further analyze the instability and decay processes of the U(2) gauge theory and the TP monopole co…
We propose a new algorithm for simulating noncommutative phi-four theory on the fuzzy sphere based on, i) coupling the scalar field to a U(1) gauge field, in such a way that in the commutative limit N\longrightarrow \infty, the two modes decouple and we are left with pure scalar phi-four on the sphere, and ii) diagonalizing the scalar field by means of a U(N) unitary matrix, and then integrating out the unitary group from the partition function. The number of degrees of freedom in the scalar sector reduces, therefore, from N^2 to the N eigenvalues of the scalar field, whereas the dynamics of t…

We review some recent progress in quantum field theory in non-commutative space, focusing onto the fuzzy sphere as a non-perturbative regularisation scheme. We first introduce the basic formalism, and discuss the limits corresponding to different commutative or non-commutative spaces. We present some of the theories which have been investigated in this framework, with a particular attention to the scalar model. Then we comment on the results recently obtained from Monte Carlo simulations, and show a preview of new numerical data, which are consistent with the expected transition between two ph…
