This thesis is devoted to the study of Quantum Field Theories (QFT) on fuzzy spaces. Fuzzy spaces are approximations to the algebra of functions of a continuous space by a finite matrix algebra. In the limit of infinitely large matrices the formulation is exact. An attractive feature of this approach is that it transparently shows how the geometrical properties of the continuous space are preserved. In the study of the non-perturbative regime of QFT, fuzzy spaces provide a possible alternative to the lattice as a regularisation method. The thesis is divided into two parts. We perform Monte Carlo simulations of a $λϕ^4$ theory on a 3-dimensional Euclidean space. We identify the phase diagram of this model. In addition to the usual disordered and uniform ordered phases we find a third phase of non-uniform ordering. This indicates the existence of the phenomenon called UV-IR mixing in the strong coupling regime. Second we present a geometrical analysis of the scalar field theory on a 4-dimensional fuzzy sphere, S4_F. Nevertheless a fuzzy version of S4 cannot be achieved by quantisation of the classical space. The problem is circumvented by defining a scalar theory on a larger space, CP3 which is 6-dimensional. It includes degrees of freedom related to S^4 plus others beyond S4. Those extra degrees of freedom are dynamically suppressed through a probabilistic method. The analysis of the geometrical structures allows us to interpret this procedure as a Kaluza-Klein reduction of CP3 to S4.
We consider a reduced model of four-dimensional Yang-Mills theory with a mass term. This matrix model has two classical solutions, two-dimensional fuzzy sphere and two-dimensional fuzzy torus. These classical solutions are constructed by embedding them into three or four dimensional flat space. They exist for finite size matrices, that is, the number of the quantum on these manifolds is finite. Noncommutative gauge theories on these noncommutative manifolds are derived by expanding the model around these classical solutions and studied by taking two large $N$ limits, a commutative limit and a …
We briefly review the connection between the fuzzy field theories and matrix models and describe the main features of the models that appear. We summarize the different approaches to their analysis, some of the recent results and the challenges to be addressed in the future.
We review the description of scalar field theories on fuzzy spaces by Hermitian random matrix models. After reminding the reader of the relevant aspects of the random matrix theory and construction of the fuzzy spaces, we summarize the most important results for the scalar fields on such spaces. We then introduce the multi-trace matrix models relevant for the analytical description of scalar field theories on fuzzy spaces and show to what extent they do, and to what extent they do not, describe the know phase structure of $ϕ^4$ theory on the fuzzy sphere.
We review the interplay of fuzzy field theories and matrix models, with an emphasis on the phase structure of fuzzy scalar field theories. We give a self-contained introduction to these topics and give the details concerning the saddle point approach for the usual single trace and multitrace matrix models. We then review the attempts to explain the phase structure of the fuzzy field theory using a corresponding random matrix ensemble, showing the strength and weaknesses of this approach. We conclude with a list of challenges one needs to overcome and the most interesting open problems one can …
We review analytical approaches to scalar field theory on fuzzy spaces. We briefly outline the matrix description of these theories and describe various approximations to the relevant matrix model. We discuss the challenge of obtaining a consistent approximation that includes the higher moments of the theory.
We argue that the worldvolume theories of D-branes probing orbifolds with discrete torsion develop, in the large quiver limit, new non-commutative directions. This provides an explicit `deconstruction' of a wide class of noncommutative theories. This also provides insight into the physical meaning of discrete torsion and its relation to the T-dual B field. We demonstrate that the strict large quiver limit reproduces the matrix theory construction of higher-dimensional D-branes, and argue that finite `fuzzy moose' theories provide novel regularizations of non-commutative theories and explicit s…
We consider gauge theories defined in higher dimensions where the extra dimensions form a fuzzy space (a finite matrix manifold). We reinterpret these gauge theories as four-dimensional theories with Kaluza-Klein modes. We then perform a generalized `a la Forgacs-Manton dimensional reduction. We emphasize some striking features emerging such as (i) the appearance of non-abelian gauge theories in four dimensions starting from an abelian gauge theory in higher dimensions, (ii) the fact that the spontaneous symmetry breaking of the theory takes place entirely in the extra dimensions and (iii) the…
We first briefly review the Coset Space Dimensional Reduction (CSDR) programme and present the results of the best model so far, based on the $\mathcal{N} = 1$, $d = 10$, $E_8$ gauge theory reduced over the nearly-Kähler manifold $SU(3)/U(1)\times U(1)$. Then, we present the adjustment of the CSDR programme in the case that the extra dimensions are considered to be fuzzy coset spaces and then, the best model constructed in this framework, too, which is the trinification GUT, $SU(3)^3$.
By considering scalar theories on the fuzzy sphere as matrix models, we construct a renormalization scheme and calculate the one-loop effective action. Because of UV-IR mixing, the two- and the four-point correlators at low energy are not slowly varying functions of external momenta. Interestingly, we also find that field theories on fuzzy RP^2 avoid UV-IR mixing and hence are much more like conventional field theories. We calculate the one-loop beta-function for the O(N) theory on fuzzy RP^2 at large N and show that in addition to the trivial one, it has a nontrivial fixed point that is acces…
We construct a supermatrix model whose classical background gives two-dimensional noncommutative supersphere. Quantum fluctuations around it give the supersymmetric gauge theories on the fuzzy supersphere constructed by Klimcik. This model has a parameter $β$ which can tune masses of the particles in the model and interpolate various supersymmetric gauge theories on sphere.
We combine and exploit ideas from Coset Space Dimensional Reduction (CSDR) methods and Non-commutative Geometry. We consider the dimensional reduction of gauge theories defined in high dimensions where the compact directions are a fuzzy space (matrix manifold). In the CSDR one assumes that the form of space-time is M^D=M^4 x S/R with S/R a homogeneous space. Then a gauge theory with gauge group G defined on M^D can be dimensionally reduced to M^4 in an elegant way using the symmetries of S/R, in particular the resulting four dimensional gauge is a subgroup of G. In the present work we show tha…
We consider a U(2) Yang-Mills theory on M x S_F^2 where M is an arbitrary noncommutative manifold and S_F^2 is a fuzzy sphere spontaneously generated from a noncommutative U(N) Yang-Mills theory on M, coupled to a triplet of scalars in the adjoint of U(N). Employing the SU(2)-equivariant gauge field constructed in arXiv:0905.2338, we perform the dimensional reduction of the theory over the fuzzy sphere. The emergent model is a noncommutative U(1) gauge theory coupled adjointly to a set of scalar fields. We study this model on the Groenewald-Moyal plane and find that, in certain limits, it admi…
We start by briefly reviewing the description of gravity theories as gauge theories in four dimensions. More specifically we recall the procedure leading to the results of General Relativity and Weyl Gravity in a gauge-theoretic manner. Then, after a brief reminder of the formulation of gauge theories on noncommutative spaces, we review our recent work, where gravity is constructed as a gauge theory on the fuzzy $dS_4$.
We explicitly construct noncommutative * products on circularly symmetric two dimensional space by using the technique of Fedosov's deformation quantization. Especially, on constant curvature spaces i.e., S^2 and H^2, we get su(2) and su(1,1) algebra respectively. These are candidates of * products applicable to noncommutative field theories or noncommutative gauge theories on spaces with nontrivial symplectic structure.
Theories defined in higher than four dimensions have been used in various frameworks and have a long and interesting history. Here we review certain attempts, developed over the last years, towards the construction of unified particle physics models in the context of higher-dimensional gauge theories with non-commutative extra dimensions. These ideas have been developed in two complementary ways, namely (i) starting with a higher-dimensional gauge theory and dimensionally reducing it to four dimensions over fuzzy internal spaces and (ii) starting with a four-dimensional, renormalizable gauge t…
We analyse the fluctuations of the ground-state/funnel solutions proposed to describe M2-M5 systems in the level-k mass-deformed/pure Chern-Simons-matter ABJM theory of multiple membranes. We show that in the large N limit the fluctuations approach the space of functions on the 2-sphere rather than the naively expected 3-sphere. This is a novel realisation of the fuzzy 2-sphere in the context of Matrix Theories, which uses bifundamental instead of adjoint scalars. Starting from the multiple M2-brane action, a U(1) Yang-Mills theory on R^{2,1} x S^2 is recovered at large N, which is consistent …
We investigate mass deformation of twisted superalgebra of U(N) super Yang-Mills (SYM) theories in several models and in several dimensions, motivated by the method formulated in [1]. We show that there are several ways to perform the deformation, if a model possesses four scalar supercharges except for two dimensional B-model. We also evaluate classical vacuum solutions of the potentials of scalar fields for each model. We then find that it is always possible to find fuzzy sphere solution in the theories.
We apply the modern Batalin-Vilkovisky quantization techniques of Costello and Gwilliam to noncommutative field theories in the finite-dimensional case of fuzzy spaces. We further develop a generalization of this framework to theories that are equivariant under a triangular Hopf algebra symmetry, which in particular leads to quantizations of finite-dimensional analogs of the field theories proposed recently through the notion of `braided $L_\infty$-algebras'. The techniques are illustrated by computing perturbative correlation functions for scalar and Chern-Simons theories on the fuzzy $2$-sph…
We describe closed string modes by open Wilson lines in noncommutative (NC) gauge theories on compact fuzzy G/H in IIB matrix model. In this construction the world sheet cut-off is related to the spacetime cut-off since the string bit of the symmetric traced Wilson line carries the minimum momentum on G/H. We show that the two point correlation functions of graviton type Wilson lines in 4 dimensional NC gauge theories behave as 1/(momentum)^2. This result suggests that graviton is localized on D3-brane, so we can naturally interpret D3-branes as our universe. Our result is not limited to D3-br…
We examine gauge theories defined in higher dimensions where theextra dimensions form a fuzzy (finite matrix) manifold. First we reinterpret these gauge theories as four-dimensional theories with Kaluza-Klein modes and then we perform a generalized à la Forgacs-Manton dimensional reduction. We emphasize some striking features emerging in the later case such as (i) the appearance of non-abelian gauge theories in four dimensions starting from an abelian gauge theory in higher dimensions, (ii) the fact that the spontaneous symmetry breaking of the theory takes place entirely in the extra dimensio…
Regularization of quantum field theories (QFT's) can be achieved by quantizing the underlying manifold (spacetime or spatial slice) thereby replacing it by a non-commutative matrix model or a ``fuzzy manifold'' . Such discretization by quantization is remarkably successful in preserving symmetries and topological features, and altogether overcoming the fermion-doubling problem . In this thesis, the fuzzification of coadjoint orbits and their QFT's are put forward.
We present an analysis of two different approximations to the scalar field theory on the fuzzy sphere, a nonperturbative and a perturbative one, which are both multitrace matrix models. We show that the former reproduces a phase diagram with correct features in a qualitative agreement with the previous numerical studies and that the latter gives a phase diagram with features not expected in the phase diagram of the field theory.
We briefly review the Coset Space Dimensional Reduction (CSDR) programme and the best model constructed so far and then we present some details of the corresponding programme in the case that the extra dimensions are considered to be fuzzy. In particular, we present a four-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = 4$ Super Yang Mills Theory, orbifolded by $\mathbb{Z}_3$, which mimics the behaviour of a dimensionally reduced $\mathcal{N} = 1$, 10-dimensional gauge theory over a set of fuzzy spheres at intermediate high scales and leads to the trinification GUT $SU(3)^3$ at slightly lower, which in turn can be…
We write down scalar field theory and gauge theory on two-dimensional noncommutative spaces ${\cal M}$ with nonvanishing curvature and non-constant non-commutativity. Usual dynamics results upon taking the limit of ${\cal M}$ going to i) a commutative manifold ${\cal M}_0$ having nonvanishing curvature and ii) the noncommutative plane. Our procedure does not require introducing singular algebraic maps or frame fields. Rather, we exploit the Kähler structure in the limit i) and identify the symplectic two-form with the volume two-form. As an example, we take ${\cal M}$ to be the stereographical…
First, we briefly review the Coset Space Dimensional Reduction scheme and the results of the best model so far. Then, we present the introduction of fuzzy coset spaces used as extra dimensions and perform a dimensional reduction. In turn, we describe a construction which mimics the results of a reduction, starting from a 4-dimensional theory and we present a successful example of a dynamical generation of fuzzy spheres. Finally, we propose a construction of the 3-d gravity as a gauge theory on specific non-commutative spaces.
We construct noncommutative U(1) gauge theory on the fuzzy sphere S^2_N as a unitary 2N x 2N matrix model. In the quantum theory the model is equivalent to a nonabelian U(N) Yang-Mills theory on a 2 dimensional lattice with 2 plaquettes. This equivalence holds in the " fuzzy sphere" phase where we observe a 3rd order phase transition between weak-coupling and strong-coupling phases of the gauge theory. In the ``matrix'' phase we have a U(N) gauge theory on a single point.
We consider a gauge-Higgs system on a fuzzy 2-sphere and study the topological structure of gauge configurations, when the U(2) gauge symmetry is spontaneously broken to U(1) times U(1) by the vev of the Higgs field. The topology is classified by the index of the Dirac operator satisfying the Ginsparg-Wilson relation, which turns out to be a noncommutative analog of the topological charge introduced by 't Hooft. It can be rewritten as a form whose commutative limit becomes the winding number of the Higgs field. We also study conditions which assure the validity of the formulation, and give a g…
We discuss the second quantization of scalar field theory on the q-deformed fuzzy sphere S^2_{q,N} for q \in \R, using a path-integral approach. We find quantum field theories which are manifestly covariant under U_q(su(2)), have a smooth limit q -> 1, and satisfy positivity and twisted bosonic symmetry properties. Using a Drinfeld twist, they are equivalent to ordinary but slightly "nonlocal" QFT's on the undeformed fuzzy sphere, which are covariant under SU(2).
Finite Unified Theories (FUTs) are N=1 supersymmetric Grand Unified Theories, which can be made all-loop finite, both in the dimensionless (gauge and Yukawa couplings) and dimensionful (soft supersymmetry breaking terms) sectors. This remarkable property, based on the reduction of couplings at the quantum level, provides a drastic reduction in the number of free parameters, which in turn leads to an accurate prediction of the top quark mass in the dimensionless sector, and predictions for the Higgs boson mass and the supersymmetric spectrum in the dimensionful sector. Here we examine the predi…
We discuss gauge theories for commutative but non-associative algebras related to the $ SO(2k+1)$ covariant finite dimensional fuzzy $2k$-sphere algebras. A consequence of non-associativity is that gauge fields and gauge parameters have to be generalized to be functions of coordinates as well as derivatives. The usual gauge fields depending on coordinates only are recovered after a partial gauge fixing. The deformation parameter for these commutative but non-associative algebras is a scalar of the rotation group. This suggests interesting string-inspired algebraic deformations of spacetime whic…
Using the Hopf fibration and starting from a four dimensional noncommutative Moyal plane, $R^2_θ\times R^2_θ$, we obtain a star-product for the noncommutative (fuzzy) $R^3_λ$ defined by $[x^i,x^j]=iλε_{ijk}x^k$. Furthermore, we show that there is a projection function which allows us to reduce the functions on $R^3_λ$ to that of the fuzzy sphere, and hence we introduce a new star-product on the fuzzy sphere. We will then briefly discuss how using our method one can extract information about the field theory on fuzzy sphere and $\rrlam$ from the corresponding field theories on $R_{theta}\times …

We study $SO(m)$ covariant Matrix realizations of $ \sum_{i=1}^{m} X_i^2 = 1 $ for even $m$ as candidate fuzzy odd spheres following hep-th/0101001. As for the fuzzy four sphere, these Matrix algebras contain more degrees of freedom than the sphere itself and the full set of variables has a geometrical description in terms of a higher dimensional coset. The fuzzy $S^{2k-1} $ is related to a higher dimensional coset $ {SO(2k) \over U(1) \times U(k-1)}$. These cosets are bundles where base and fibre are hermitian symmetric spaces. The detailed form of the generators and relations for the Matrix …
We investigate the phase structure of a special class of multi-trace hermitian matrix models, which are candidates for the description of scalar field theory on fuzzy spaces. We include up to the fourth moment of the eigenvalue distribution into the multi-trace part of the probability distribution, which stems from the kinetic term of the field theory action. We show that by considering different multi-trace behavior in the large moment and in the small moment regimes of the model, it is possible to obtain a matrix model, which describes the numerically observed phase structure of fuzzy field …
Projecting a quantum theory onto the Hilbert subspace of states with energies below a cutoff $\overline{E}$ may lead to an effective theory with modified observables, including a noncommutative space(time). Adding a confining potential well $V$ with a very sharp minimum on a submanifold $N$ of the original space(time) $M$ may induce a dimensional reduction to a noncommutative quantum theory on $N$. Here in particular we briefly report on our application of this procedure to spheres $S^d\subset\mathbb{R}^D$ of radius $r=1$ ($D=d\!+\!1>1$): making $\overline{E}$ and the depth of the well depend …
Tensor models can be regarded as theories of dynamical fuzzy spaces, and provide background independent theories of space. Their classical solutions correspond to classical background spaces, and the small fluctuations around them can be regarded as fluctuations of fields on them. In this paper, I numerically study a tensor model around its classical backgrounds of two-, three- and four-dimensional fuzzy flat tori and show that the properties of low-lying low-momentum modes are in clear agreement with general relativity. Numerical analysis also suggests that the lowest-order effective action i…
We present the analytical approach to scalar field theory on the fuzzy sphere which has been developed in arXiv:0706.2493 [hep-th]. This approach is based on considering a perturbative expansion of the kinetic term in the partition function. After truncating this expansion at second order, one arrives at a multitrace matrix model, which allows for an application of the saddle-point method. The results are in agreement with the numerical findings in the literature.
We start with an $SU(\cal {N})$ Yang-Mills theory on a manifold ${\cal M}$, suitably coupled to two distinct set of scalar fields in the adjoint representation of $SU({\cal N})$, which are forming a doublet and a triplet, respectively under a global $SU(2)$ symmetry. We show that a direct sum of fuzzy spheres $S_F^{2 \, Int} := S_F^2(\ell) \oplus S_F^2 (\ell) \oplus S_F^2 \left ( \ell + \frac{1}{2} \right ) \oplus S_F^2 \left ( \ell - \frac{1}{2} \right )$ emerges as the vacuum solution after the spontaneous breaking of the gauge symmetry and lay the way for us to interpret the spontaneously b…
The well-known fact that classical automorphisms of (compactified) Minkowski spacetime (Poincare or conformal trandsformations) also allow a natural derivation/interpretation in the modular setting (in the operator-algebraic sense of Tomita and Takesaki) of the algebraic formulation of QFT has an interesting nontrivial chiral generalization to the diffeomorphisms of the circle. Combined with recent ideas on algebraic (d-1)-dimensional lightfront holography, these diffeomorphisms turn out to be images of ``fuzzy'' acting groups in the original d-dimensional (massive) QFT. These actions do not r…
Quantization of spacetime by means of finite dimensional matrices is the basic idea of fuzzy spaces. There remains an issue of quantizing time, however, the idea is simple and it provides an interesting interplay of various ideas in mathematics and physics. Shedding some light on such an interplay is the main theme of this dissertation. The dissertation roughly separates into two parts. In the first part, we consider a mathematical aspect of fuzzy spaces, namely, their construction. We begin with a review of the construction of fuzzy complex projective spaces CP^k (k=1,2,...) in relation to ge…
In this article, we explore the low energy structure of a $U(3)$ gauge theory over spaces with fuzzy sphere(s) as extra dimensions. In particular, we determine the equivariant parametrization of the gauge fields, which transform either invariantly or as vectors under the combined action of $SU(2)$ rotations of the fuzzy spheres and those $U(3)$ gauge transformations generated by $SU(2) \subset U(3)$ carrying the spin $1$ irreducible representation of $SU(2)$. The cases of a single fuzzy sphere $S_F^2$ and a particular direct sum of concentric fuzzy spheres, $S_F^{2 \, Int}$, covering the monop…
We develop an analytical approach to scalar field theory on the fuzzy sphere based on considering a perturbative expansion of the kinetic term. This expansion allows us to integrate out the angular degrees of freedom in the hermitian matrices encoding the scalar field. The remaining model depends only on the eigenvalues of the matrices and corresponds to a multitrace hermitian matrix model. Such a model can be solved by standard techniques as e.g. the saddle-point approximation. We evaluate the perturbative expansion up to second order and present the one-cut solution of the saddle-point appro…

We study solitons in scalar theories with polynomial interactions on the fuzzy sphere. Such solitons are described by projection operators of rank k, and hence the moduli space for the solitons is the Grassmannian Gr(k,2j+1). The gradient term of the action provides a non-trivial potential on Gr(k,2j+1), thus reducing the moduli space. We construct configurations corresponding to well-separated solitons, and show that although the solitons attract each other, the attraction vanishes in the limit of large j. In this limit, it is argued that the moduli space is CP^k. For the k-soliton bound stat…
We examine gauge theories on Minkowski space-time times fuzzy coset spaces. This means that the extra space dimensions instead of being a continuous coset space S/R are a corresponding finite matrix approximation. The gauge theory defined on this non-commutative setup is reduced to four dimensions and the rules of the corresponding dimensional reduction are established. We investigate in particular the case of the fuzzy sphere including the dimensional reduction of fermion fields.
Fuzzy spaces are obtained by quantizing adjoint orbits of compact semi-simple Lie groups. Fuzzy spheres emerge from quantizing S^2 and are associated with the group SU(2) in this manner. They are useful for regularizing quantum field theories and modeling spacetimes by non-commutative manifolds. We show that fuzzy spaces are Hopf algebras and in fact have more structure than the latter. They are thus candidates for quantum symmetries. Using their generalized Hopf algebraic structures, we can also model processes where one fuzzy space splits into several fuzzy spaces. For example we can discuss…
In this paper, we consider two-dimensional N=(4,4) supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory and deform it by a mass parameter M with keeping all supercharges. We further add another mass parameter m in a manner to respect two of the eight supercharges and put the deformed theory on a two-dimensional square lattice, on which the two supercharges are exactly preserved. The flat directions of scalar fields are stabilized due to the mass deformations, which gives discrete minima representing fuzzy spheres. We show in the perturbation theory that the lattice continuum limit can be taken without any f…
Scalar field theories with quartic interaction are quantized on fuzzy $S^2$ and fuzzy $S^2\times S^2$ to obtain the 2- and 4-point correlation functions at one-loop. Different continuum limits of these noncommutative matrix spheres are then taken to recover the quantum noncommutative field theories on the noncommutative planes ${\mathbb R}^2$ and ${\mathbb R}^4$ respectively. The canonical limit of large stereographic projection leads to the usual theory on the noncommutative plane with the well-known singular UV-IR mixing. A new planar limit of the fuzzy sphere is defined in which the noncomm…
