We investigate the phase structure of a special class of multi-trace hermitian matrix models, which are candidates for the description of scalar field theory on fuzzy spaces. We include up to the fourth moment of the eigenvalue distribution into the multi-trace part of the probability distribution, which stems from the kinetic term of the field theory action. We show that by considering different multi-trace behavior in the large moment and in the small moment regimes of the model, it is possible to obtain a matrix model, which describes the numerically observed phase structure of fuzzy field theories. Including the existence of uniform order phase, triple point, and an approximately straight transition line between the uniform and non-uniform order phases.
We solve a multitrace matrix model approximating the real quartic scalar field theory on the fuzzy sphere and obtain its phase diagram. We generalize this method to models with modified kinetic terms and demonstrate its use by investigating models related to the removal of the UV/IR mixing. We show that for the fuzzy sphere a modification of the kinetic part of the action by higher derivative term can change the phase diagram of the theory such that the triple point moves further from the origin.
Quantum field theory defined on a noncommutative space is a useful toy model of quantum gravity and is known to have several intriguing properties, such as nonlocality and UV/IR mixing. They suggest novel types of correlation among the degrees of freedom of different energy scales. In this paper, we investigate such correlations by the use of entanglement entropy in the momentum space. We explicitly evaluate the entanglement entropy of scalar field theory on a fuzzy sphere and find that it exhibits different behaviors from that on the usual continuous sphere. We argue that these differences wo…
Using the action describing N coincident gravitational waves in M-theory we construct a pp-wave Matrix model cointaning a fuzzy 5-sphere giant graviton solution. This fuzzy 5-sphere is constructed as a U(1) fibration over a fuzzy $CP^2$, and has the correct dependence of the radius with the light-cone momentum, $r^4\sim p^+$, to approach the 5-sphere giant graviton solution of Mc.Greevy et al in the large N limit.
We study polynomial deformations of the fuzzy sphere, specifically given by the cubic or the Higgs algebra. We derive the Higgs algebra by quantizing the Poisson structure on a surface in $\mathbb{R}^3$. We find that several surfaces, differing by constants, are described by the Higgs algebra at the fuzzy level. Some of these surfaces have a singularity and we overcome this by quantizing this manifold using coherent states for this nonlinear algebra. This is seen in the measure constructed from these coherent states. We also find the star product for this non-commutative algebra as a first ste…
We review analytical approaches to scalar field theory on fuzzy spaces. We briefly outline the matrix description of these theories and describe various approximations to the relevant matrix model. We discuss the challenge of obtaining a consistent approximation that includes the higher moments of the theory.
We present a numerical study of a two dimensional model of the Wess-Zumino type. We formulate this model on a sphere, where the fields are expanded in spherical harmonics. The sphere becomes fuzzy by a truncation in the angular momenta. This leads to a finite set of degrees of freedom without explicitly breaking the space symmetries. The corresponding field theory is expressed in terms of a matrix model, which can be simulated. We present first numerical results for the phase structure of a variant of this model on a fuzzy sphere. The prospect to restore exact supersymmetry in certain limits i…
This thesis is devoted to the study of Quantum Field Theories (QFT) on fuzzy spaces. Fuzzy spaces are approximations to the algebra of functions of a continuous space by a finite matrix algebra. In the limit of infinitely large matrices the formulation is exact. An attractive feature of this approach is that it transparently shows how the geometrical properties of the continuous space are preserved. In the study of the non-perturbative regime of QFT, fuzzy spaces provide a possible alternative to the lattice as a regularisation method. The thesis is divided into two parts. We perform Monte Car…
We study phase structures of quantum field theories in fuzzy geometries. Several examples of fuzzy geometries as well as QFT's on such geometries are considered. They are fuzzy spheres and beyond as well as noncommutative deformations of BTZ blackholes. Analysis is done analytically and through simulations. Several features like novel stripe phases as well as spontaneous symmetry breaking avoiding Colemen, Mermin, Wagner theorem are brought out. Also we establish that these phases are stable due to topological obstructions.
The behaviour of matrix string theory in the background of a type IIA pp wave at small string coupling, g_s << 1, is determined by the combination M g_s where M is a dimensionless parameter proportional to the strength of the Ramond-Ramond background. For M g_s << 1, the matrix string theory is conventional; only the degrees of freedom in the Cartan subalgebra contribute, and the theory reduces to copies of the perturbative string. For M g_s >> 1, the theory admits degenerate vacua representing fundamental strings blown up into fuzzy spheres with nonzero lightcone momenta. We determine the spe…
We study the fuzzy hyperboloids AdS^2 and dS^2 as brane solutions in matrix models. The unitary representations of SO(2,1) required for quantum field theory are identified, and explicit formulae for their realization in terms of fuzzy wavefunctions are given. In a second part, we study the (A)dS^2 brane geometry and its dynamics, as governed by a suitable matrix model. In particular, we show that trace of the energy-momentum tensor of matter induces transversal perturbations of the brane and of the Ricci scalar. This leads to a linearized form of Henneaux-Teitelboim-type gravity, illustrating …
Here we have illustrated the construction of a real structure on fuzzy sphere $S^2_*$ in its spin-1/2 representation. Considering the SU(2) covariant Dirac and chirality operator on $S^2_*$ given by Watamura et. al. in [6], we have shown that the real structure is consistent with other spectral data for KO dimension-4 fulfilling the zero order condition, where we find it necessary to enlarge the symmetry group from SO(3) to the full orthogonal group O(3). However the first order condition is violated thus paving the way to construct a toy model for an SU(2) gauge theory to capture some feature…
I construct field theory on an evolving fuzzy two-sphere, which is based on the idea of evolving non-commutative worlds of the previous paper. The equations of motion are similar to the one that can be obtained by dropping the time-derivative term of the equation derived some time ago by Banks, Peskin and Susskind for pure-into-mixed-state evolutions. The equations do not contain an explicit time, and therefore follow the spirit of the Wheeler-de Witt equation. The basic properties of field theory such as action, gauge invariance and charge and momentum conservation are studied. The continuum …
Nottale's special scale-relativity principle was proposed earlier by the author as a plausible geometrical origin to string theory and extended objects. Scale Relativity is to scales what motion Relativity is to velocities. The universal, absolute, impassible, invariant scale under dilatations in Nature is taken to be the Planck scale, which is not the same as the string scale. Starting with ordinary actions for strings and other extended objects, we show that gauge theories of volume-resolutions scale-relativistic symmetries, of the world volume measure associated with the extended ``fuzzy'' …

Scalar field theories with quartic interaction are quantized on fuzzy $S^2$ and fuzzy $S^2\times S^2$ to obtain the 2- and 4-point correlation functions at one-loop. Different continuum limits of these noncommutative matrix spheres are then taken to recover the quantum noncommutative field theories on the noncommutative planes ${\mathbb R}^2$ and ${\mathbb R}^4$ respectively. The canonical limit of large stereographic projection leads to the usual theory on the noncommutative plane with the well-known singular UV-IR mixing. A new planar limit of the fuzzy sphere is defined in which the noncomm…
We develop the description of non-commutative geometry of the 4-dimensional quantum Hall fluid's theory proposed recently by Zhang and Hu. The non-commutative structure of fuzzy $S^{4}$ appears naturally in this theory. The fuzzy monopole harmonics, which are the essential elements in this non-commutative geometry, are explicitly constructed and their obeying the matrix algebra is obtained. This matrix algebra is associative. We also propose a fusion scheme of the fuzzy monopole harmonics of the coupling system from those of the subsystems, and determine the fusion rule in such fusion scheme. …
We investigate the correlators of TrA_{mu}A_{nu} in matrix models on homogeneous spaces: S^2 and S^2 x S^2. Their expectation value is a good order parameter to measure the geometry of the space on which non-commutative gauge theory is realized. They also serve as the Wilson lines which carry the minimum momentum. We develop an efficient procedure to calculate them through 1PI diagrams. We determine the large N scaling behavior of the correlators. The order parameter shows that fuzzy S^2 x S^2 acquires a 4 dimensional fractal structure in contrast to fuzzy S^2. We also find that the two point …
We consider the possibility of having Dark Matter (DM) black holes motivated by the Einasto density profile. This generalizes both the noncommutative mini black hole model and allows DM to enter as the matter constituent which makes up the black hole. We show that it is possible to construct a black hole solution for each value of the Einasto index and for different values of the mass parameter, provided that the we work with the energy-momentum tensor of an anisotropic fluid. In particular, we achieve that by first considering the equation of state (EOS) $p_r=-ρ$. It turns out that the corres…
We address the study of gauge invariance in the Standard Model Extension which encompasses all Lorentz-violating terms originated by spontaneous symmetry breaking at the Planck scale. In particular, we fully evaluate Ward identities involving two and three point functions and derive the conditions which assure gauge invariance of the electromagnetic sector of the Standard Model Extension at one-loop. We show that momentum routing invariance is sufficient to fix arbitrary and regularization dependent parameters intrinsic to perturbation theory in the diagrams involved. A scheme which judiciousl…
We address a detailed non-perturbative numerical study of the scalar theory on the fuzzy sphere. We use a novel algorithm which strongly reduces the correlation problems in the matrix update process, and allows the investigation of different regimes of the model in a precise and reliable way. We study the modes associated to different momenta and the role they play in the ``striped phase'', pointing out a consistent interpretation which is corroborated by our data, and which sheds further light on the results obtained in some previous works. Next, we test a quantitative, non-trivial theoretica…

Axions are some of the best motivated particles beyond the Standard Model. We show how the attractive self-interactions of dark matter (DM) axions over a broad range of masses, from $10^{-22}$ eV to $10^7$ GeV, can lead to nongravitational growth of density fluctuations and the formation of bound objects. This structure formation enhancement is driven by parametric resonance when the initial field misalignment is large, and it affects axion density perturbations on length scales of order the Hubble horizon when the axion field starts oscillating, deep inside the radiation-dominated era. This e…
