We consider products of independent large random rectangular matrices with independent entries. The limit distribution of the expected empirical distribution of singular values of such products is computed. The distribution function is described by its Stieltjes transform, which satisfies some algebraic equation. In the particular case of square matrices we get a well-known distribution which moments are Fuss-Catalan numbers.
We establish a large deviation principle for the empirical spectral measure of a sample covariance matrix with sub-Gaussian entries, which extends Bordenave and Caputo's result for Wigner matrices having the same type of entries [7]. To this aim, we need to establish an asymptotic freeness result for rectangular free convolution, more precisely, we give a bound in the subordination formula for information-plus-noise matrices.
We consider m independent random rectangular matrices whose entries are independent and identically distributed standard complex Gaussian random variables. Assume the product of the m rectangular matrices is an n by n square matrix. The maximum absolute values of the n eigenvalues of the product matrix is called spectral radius. In this paper, we study the limiting spectral radii of the product when m changes with n and can even diverge. We give a complete description for the limiting distribution of the spectral radius. Our results reduce to those in Jiang and Qi [26] when the rectangular mat…
In this paper, we consider $m$ independent random rectangular matrices whose entries are independent and identically distributed standard complex Gaussian random variables and assume the product of the $m$ rectangular matrices is an $n$ by $n$ square matrix. We study the limiting empirical spectral distributions of the product where the dimension of the product matrix goes to infinity, and $m$ may change with the dimension of the product matrix and diverge. We give a complete description for the limiting distribution of the empirical spectral distributions for the product matrix and illustrate…
We derive estimates for the largest and smallest singular values of sparse rectangular $N\times n$ random matrices, assuming $\lim_{N,n\to\infty}\frac nN=y\in(0,1)$. We consider a model with sparsity parameter $p_N$ such that $Np_N\sim \log^{α}N$ for some $α>1$, and assume that the moments of the matrix elements satisfy the condition $\mathbf E|X_{jk}|^{4+δ}\le C<\infty$. We assume also that the entries of matrices we consider are truncated at the level $(Np_N)^{\frac12-\varkappa}$ with $\varkappa:=\fracδ{2(4+δ)}$.
We prove an estimate on the smallest singular value of a multiplicatively and additively deformed random rectangular matrix. Suppose $n\le N \le M \le ΛN$ for some constant $Λ\ge 1$. Let $X$ be an $M\times n$ random matrix with independent and identically distributed entries, which have zero mean, unit variance and arbitrarily high moments. Let $T$ be an $N\times M$ deterministic matrix with comparable singular values $c\le s_{N}(T) \le s_{1}(T) \le c^{-1}$ for some constant $c>0$. Let $A$ be an $N\times n$ deterministic matrix with $\|A\|=O(\sqrt{N})$. Then we prove that for any $ε>0$, the sm…
Let $δ>1$ and $β>0$ be some real numbers. We prove that there are positive $u,v,N_0$ depending only on $β$ and $δ$ with the following property: for any $N,n$ such that $N\ge \max(N_0,δn)$, any $N\times n$ random matrix $A=(a_{ij})$ with i.i.d. entries satisfying $\sup\limits_{λ\in {\mathbb R}}{\mathbb P}\bigl\{|a_{11}-λ|\le 1\bigr\}\le 1-β$ and any non-random $N\times n$ matrix $B$, the smallest singular value $s_n$ of $A+B$ satisfies ${\mathbb P}\bigl\{s_n(A+B)\le u\sqrt{N}\bigr\}\le \exp(-vN)$. The result holds without any moment assumptions on distribution of the entries of $A$.
A recent approach to the Beck-Fiala conjecture, a fundamental problem in combinatorics, has been to understand when random integer matrices have constant discrepancy. We give a complete answer to this question for two natural models: matrices with Bernoulli or Poisson entries. For Poisson matrices, we further characterize the discrepancy for any rectangular aspect ratio. These results give sharp answers to questions of Hoberg and Rothvoss (SODA 2019) and Franks and Saks (Random Structures Algorithms 2020). Our main tool is a conditional second moment method combined with Stein's method of exch…
In this article we study the Dyson Bessel process, which describes the evolution of singular values of rectangular matrix Brownian motions, and prove a large deviation principle for its empirical particle density. We then use it to obtain the asymptotics of the so-called rectangular spherical integrals as $m,n$ go to infinity while $m/n$ converges.
In this manuscript we consider denoising of large rectangular matrices: given a noisy observation of a signal matrix, what is the best way of recovering the signal matrix itself? For Gaussian noise and rotationally-invariant signal priors, we completely characterize the optimal denoiser and its performance in the high-dimensional limit, in which the size of the signal matrix goes to infinity with fixed aspects ratio, and under the Bayes optimal setting, that is when the statistician knows how the signal and the observations were generated. Our results generalise previous works that considered …
Products and sums of random matrices have seen a rapid development in the past decade due to various analytical techniques available. Two of these are the harmonic analysis approach and the concept of polynomial ensembles. Very recently, it has been shown for products of real matrices with anti-symmetric matrices of even dimension that the traditional harmonic analysis on matrix groups developed by Harish-Chandra et al. needs to be modified when considering the group action on general symmetric spaces of matrices. In the present work, we consider the product of complex random matrices with Her…
In this paper, we prove that an $n\times n$ matrix $A$ with independent centered subgaussian entries satisfies \[ s_{n+1-l}(A) \le C_1t \frac{l}{\sqrt{n}} \] with probability at least $1-\exp(-C_2tl)$. This yields $s_{n-l}(A) \sim \frac{cl}{\sqrt{n}}$ in combination with a known lower bound. These results can be generalized to the rectangular matrix case.
We consider the least singular value of $M = R^* X T + U^* YV$, where $R,T,U,V$ are independent Haar-distributed unitary matrices and $X, Y$ are deterministic diagonal matrices. Under weak conditions on $X$ and $Y$, we show that the limiting distribution of the least singular value of $M$, suitably rescaled, is the same as the limiting distribution for the least singular value of a matrix of i.i.d. gaussian random variables. Our proof is based on the dynamical method used by Che and Landon to study the local spectral statistics of sums of Hermitian matrices.
We consider the problem of detecting signals in the rank-one signal-plus-noise data matrix models that generalize the spiked Wishart matrices. We show that the principal component analysis can be improved by pre-transforming the matrix entries if the noise is non-Gaussian. As an intermediate step, we prove a sharp phase transition of the largest eigenvalues of spiked rectangular matrices, which extends the Baik-Ben Arous-Péché (BBP) transition. We also propose a hypothesis test to detect the presence of signal with low computational complexity, based on the linear spectral statistics, which mi…

We consider the edge statistics of large dimensional deformed rectangular matrices of the form $Y_t=Y+\sqrt{t}X,$ where $Y$ is a $p \times n$ deterministic signal matrix whose rank is comparable to $n$, $X$ is a $p\times n$ random noise matrix with centered i.i.d. entries with variance $n^{-1}$, and $t>0$ gives the noise level. This model is referred to as the interference-plus-noise matrix in the study of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, which belongs to the category of the so-called signal-plus-noise model. For the case $t=1$, the spectral statistics of this model have b…
In this paper, the exact values of the structured singular values of some generalized stochastic complex matrices is explicit in term of the constant row (column) sum.
In this paper we give a simple, short, and self-contained proof for a non-trivial upper bound on the probability that a random $\pm 1$ symmetric matrix is singular.
We consider large Hermitian matrices whose entries are defined by evaluating the exponential function along orbits of the skew-shift $\binom{j}{2} ω+jy+x \mod 1$ for irrational $ω$. We prove that the eigenvalue distribution of these matrices converges to the corresponding distribution from random matrix theory on the global scale, namely, the Wigner semicircle law for square matrices and the Marchenko-Pastur law for rectangular matrices. The results evidence the quasi-random nature of the skew-shift dynamics which was observed in other contexts by Bourgain-Goldstein-Schlag and Rudnick-Sarnak-Z…
