We have shown in the revised version that the statistics of the largest eigenavlues of a sample covariance random matrix with i.i.d. Cauchy entries agree in the limit with the statistics of the inhomogeneous Poisson random point process with the intensity $\frac{1}π x^{-3/2}.$
We apply the method of determinants to study the distribution of the largest singular values of large $ m \times n $ real rectangular random matrices with independent Cauchy entries. We show that statistical properties of the (rescaled by a factor of $ \frac{1}{m^2\*n^2}$)largest singular values agree in the limit with the statistics of the inhomogeneous Poisson random point process with the intensity $ \frac{1}π x^{-3/2} $ and, therefore, are different from the Tracy-Widom law. Among other corollaries of our method we show an interesting connection between the mathematical expectations of the determinants of complex rectangular $ m \times n $ standard Wishart ensemble and real rectangular $ 2m \times 2n $ standard Wishart ensemble.
In this article, we consider random Wigner matrices, that is symmetric matrices such that the subdiagonal entries of Xn are independent, centered, and with variance one except on the diagonal where the entries have variance two. We prove that, under some suitable hypotheses on the laws of the entries, the law of the largest eigenvalue satisfies a large deviation principle with the same rate function as in the Gaussian case. The crucial assumption is that the Laplace transform of the entries must be bounded above by the Laplace transform of a centered Gaussian variable with same variance. This …
We derive concentration inequalities for functions of the empirical measure of large random matrices with infinitely divisible entries and, in particular, stable ones. We also give concentration results for some other functionals of these random matrices, such as the largest eigenvalue or the largest singular value.
In this paper, we are interested in the asymptotic properties for the largest eigenvalue of the Hermitian random matrix ensemble, called the Generalized Cauchy ensemble $GCy$, whose eigenvalues PDF is given by $$\textrm{const}\cdot\prod_{1\leq j<k\leq N}(x_j-x_k)^2\prod_{j=1}^N (1+ix_j)^{-s-N}(1-ix_j)^{-\bar{s}-N}dx_j,$$where $s$ is a complex number such that $\Re(s)>-1/2$ and where $N$ is the size of the matrix ensemble. Using results by Borodin and Olshanski \cite{Borodin-Olshanski}, we first prove that for this ensemble, the largest eigenvalue divided by $N$ converges in law to some probabi…
We investigate the product of $n$ complex non-Hermitian, independent random matrices, each of size $N_i\times N_{i+1}$ $(i=1,...,n)$, with independent identically distributed Cauchy entries (Cauchy-Lorentz matrices). The joint probability distribution of the complex eigenvalues of the product matrix is found to be given by a determinantal point process as in the case of a single Cauchy-Lorentz matrix, but with weight given by a Meijer G-function depending on $n$ and $N_i$.
We study the statistics of the largest eigenvalues of real symmetric and sample covariance matrices when the entries are heavy tailed. Extending the result obtained by Soshnikov in \cite{Sos1}, we prove that, in the absence of the fourth moment, the top eigenvalues behave, in the limit, as the largest entries of the matrix.
We study large Wigner random matrices in the case when the marginal distributions of matrix entries have heavy tails. We prove that the largest eigenvalues of such matrices have Poisson statistics.
Let X_n=(x_{ij}) be an n by p data matrix, where the n rows form a random sample of size n from a certain p-dimensional population distribution. Let R_n=(ρ_{ij}) be the p\times p sample correlation matrix of X_n; that is, the entry ρ_{ij} is the usual Pearson's correlation coefficient between the ith column of X_n and jth column of X_n. For contemporary data both n and p are large. When the population is a multivariate normal we study the test that H_0: the p variates of the population are uncorrelated. A test statistic is chosen as L_n=max_{i\ne j}|ρ_{ij}|. The asymptotic distribution of L_n …
We study matrices whose entries are free or exchangeable noncommutative elements in some tracial $W^*$-probability space. More precisely, we consider operator-valued Wigner and Wishart matrices and prove quantitative convergence to operator-valued semicircular elements over some subalgebra in terms of Cauchy transforms. As direct applications, we obtain explicit rates of convergence for a large class of random block matrices with independent or correlated blocks. Our approach relies on a noncommutative extension of the Lindeberg method and operator-valued Gaussian interpolation techniques.
We consider sample covariance matrices of the form $\mathcal{Q}=(Σ^{1/2}X)(Σ^{1/2} X)^*$, where the sample $X$ is an $M\times N$ random matrix whose entries are real independent random variables with variance $1/N$ and where $Σ$ is an $M\times M$ positive-definite deterministic matrix. We analyze the asymptotic fluctuations of the largest rescaled eigenvalue of $\mathcal{Q}$ when both $M$ and $N$ tend to infinity with $N/M\to d\in(0,\infty)$. For a large class of populations $Σ$ in the sub-critical regime, we show that the distribution of the largest rescaled eigenvalue of $\mathcal{Q}$ is giv…
In this text, we consider an N by N random matrix X such that all but o(N) rows of X have W non identically zero entries, the other rows having lass than $W$ entries (such as, for example, standard or cyclic band matrices). We always suppose that 1 << W << N. We first prove that if the entries are independent, centered, have variance one, satisfy a certain tail upper-bound condition and W >> (\log N)^{6(1+α)}, where αis a positive parameter depending on the distribution of the entries, then the largest eigenvalue of X/\sqrt{W} converges to the upper bound of its limit spectral distribution, th…
We show that the fluctuations of the largest eigenvalue of any generalized Wigner matrix $H$ converge to the Tracy-Widom laws at a rate nearly $O(N^{-1/3})$, as the matrix dimension $N$ tends to infinity. We allow the variances of the entries of $H$ to have distinct values but of comparable sizes such that $\sum_{i} \mathbb{E}|h_{ij}|^2=1$. Our result improves the previous rate $O(N^{-2/9})$ by Bourgade [8] and the proof relies on the first long-time Green function comparison theorem near the edges without the second moment matching restriction.
Let $\{X_{k,i};i\geq 1,k\geq 1\}$ be an array of i.i.d. random variables and let $\{p_n;n\geq 1\}$ be a sequence of positive integers such that $n/p_n$ is bounded away from 0 and $\infty$. For $W_n=\max_{1\leq i<j\leq p_n}|\sum_{k=1}^nX_{k,i}X_{k,j}|$ and $L_n=\max_{1\leq i<j\leq p_n}|\hatρ^{(n)}_{i,j}|$ where $\hatρ^{(n)}_{i,j}$ denotes the Pearson correlation coefficient between $(X_{1,i},...,X_{n,i})'$ and $(X_{1,j},...,X_{n,j})'$, the limit laws (i) $\lim_{n\to \infty}\frac{W_n}{n^α}=0$ a.s. $(α>1/2)$, (ii) $\lim_{n\to \infty}n^{1-α}L_n=0$ a.s. $(1/2<α\leq 1)$, (iii) $\lim_{n\to \infty}\fr…
We analyze the distribution of eigenvectors for mesoscopic, mean-field perturbations of diagonal matrices in the bulk of the spectrum. Our results apply to a generalized $N\times N$ Rosenzweig-Porter model. We prove that the eigenvectors entries are asymptotically Gaussian with a specific variance, localizing them onto a small, explicit part of the spectrum. For a well spread initial spectrum, this variance profile universally follows a heavy-tailed Cauchy distribution. In the case of smooth entries, we also obtain a strong form of quantum unique ergodicity as an overwhelming probability bound…
The paper studies the spectral properties of large Wigner, band and sample covariance random matrices with heavy tails of the marginal distributions of matrix entries.
In this paper, we investigate the asymptotic spectrum of complex or real Deformed Wigner matrices $(M_N)_N$ defined by $M_N=W_N/\sqrt{N}+A_N$ where $W_N$ is an $N\times N$ Hermitian (resp., symmetric) Wigner matrix whose entries have a symmetric law satisfying a Poincaré inequality. The matrix $A_N$ is Hermitian (resp., symmetric) and deterministic with all but finitely many eigenvalues equal to zero. We first show that, as soon as the first largest or last smallest eigenvalues of $A_N$ are sufficiently far from zero, the corresponding eigenvalues of $M_N$ almost surely exit the limiting semic…
We establish a large-deviations principle for the largest eigenvalue of a generalized sample covariance matrix, meaning a matrix proportional to $Z^T ΓZ$, where $Z$ has i.i.d. real or complex entries and $Γ$ is not necessarily the identity. We treat the classical case when $Z$ is Gaussian and $Γ$ is positive definite, but we also cover two orthogonal extensions: Either the entries of $Z$ can instead be sharp sub-Gaussian, a class including Rademacher and uniform distributions, where we find the same rate function as for the Gaussian model; or $Γ$ can have negative eigenvalues if $Z$ remains Ga…
We study the statistics of the largest eigenvalues of $p \times p$ sample covariance matrices $Σ_{p,n} = M_{p,n}M_{p,n}^{*}$ when the entries of the $p \times n$ matrix $M_{p,n}$ are sparse and have a distribution with tail $t^{-α}$, $α>0$. On average the number of nonzero entries of $M_{p,n}$ is of order $n^{μ+1}$, $0 \leq μ\leq 1$. We prove that in the large $n$ limit, the largest eigenvalues are Poissonian if $α<2(1+μ^{-1})$ and converge to a constant in the case $α>2(1+μ^{-1})$. We also extend the results of Benaych-Georges and Peche [7] in the Hermitian case, removing restrictions on the …
We establish precise right-tail small deviation estimates for the largest eigenvalue of real symmetric and complex Hermitian matrices whose entries are independent random variables with uniformly bounded moments. The proof relies on a Green function comparison along a continuous interpolating matrix flow for a long time. Less precise estimates are also obtained in the left tail.
We study point process convergence for sequences of iid random walks. The objective is to derive asymptotic theory for the extremes of these random walks. We show convergence of the maximum random walk to the Gumbel distribution under the existence of a $(2+δ)$th moment. We make heavily use of precise large deviation results for sums of iid random variables. As a consequence, we derive the joint convergence of the off-diagonal entries in sample covariance and correlation matrices of a high-dimensional sample whose dimension increases with the sample size. This generalizes known results on the …
The paper contains two main parts: in the first part, we analyze the general case of $p\geq 2$ matrices coupled in a chain subject to Cauchy interaction. Similarly to the Itzykson-Zuber interaction model, the eigenvalues of the Cauchy chain form a multi level determinantal point process. We first compute all correlations functions in terms of Cauchy biorthogonal polynomials and locate them as specific entries of a $(p+1)\times (p+1)$ matrix valued solution of a Riemann-Hilbert problem. In the second part, we fix the external potentials as classical Laguerre weights. We then derive strong asymp…
We show that the fluctuations of the largest eigenvalue of a real symmetric or complex Hermitian Wigner matrix of size $N$ converge to the Tracy--Widom laws at a rate $O(N^{-1/3+ω})$, as $N$ tends to infinity. For Wigner matrices this improves the previous rate $O(N^{-2/9+ω})$ obtained by Bourgade [5] for generalized Wigner matrices. Our result follows from a Green function comparison theorem, originally introduced by Erdős, Yau and Yin [19] to prove edge universality, on a finer spectral parameter scale with improved error estimates. The proof relies on the continuous Green function flow indu…
Recently Johansson and Johnstone proved that the distribution of the (properly rescaled) largest principal component of the complex (real) Wishart matrix $ X^* \* X (X^t \*X) $ converges to the Tracy-Widom law as $ n, p $ (the dimensions of $ X $) tend to $ \infty $ in some ratio $ n/p \to γ>0. $ We extend these results in two directions. First of all, we prove that the joint distribution of the first, second, third, etc. eigenvalues of a Wishart matrix converges (after a proper rescaling) to the Tracy-Widom distribution. Second of all, we explain how the combinatorial machinery developed for …
We prove a large deviation principle for the largest eigenvalue of Wigner matrices without Gaussian tails, namely such that the distribution tails $\mathbb{P}( |X_{1,1}|>t)$ and $\mathbb{P}(|X_{1,2}|>t)$ behave like $e^{-bt^α}$ and $e^{-at^α}$ respectively for some $a,b\in (0,+\infty)$ and $α\in (0,2)$. The large deviation principle is of speed $N^{α/2}$ and with a good rate function depending only on the tail distribution of the entries.
We consider random matrices of the form $H = W + λV$, $λ\in\mathbb{R}^+$, where $W$ is a real symmetric or complex Hermitian Wigner matrix of size $N$ and $V$ is a real bounded diagonal random matrix of size $N$ with i.i.d.\ entries that are independent of $W$. We assume subexponential decay for the matrix entries of $W$ and we choose $λ\sim 1$, so that the eigenvalues of $W$ and $λV$ are typically of the same order. Further, we assume that the density of the entries of $V$ is supported on a single interval and is convex near the edges of its support. In this paper we prove that there is $λ_+\…
We establish large deviations estimates for the largest eigenvalue of Wigner matrices with sub-Gaussian entries. Under technical assumptions, we show that the large deviation behavior of the largest eigenvalue is universal for small deviations, in the sense that the speed and the rate function are the same as in the case of the GOE. In contrast, in the regime of very large deviations, we obtain a non-universal rate function and we prove that the associated eigenvector is localized given the large deviation event, thus establishing the existence of a transition between two different large devia…
We solve an open problem of Diaconis that asks what are the largest orders of $p_n$ and $q_n$ such that $Z_n,$ the $p_n\times q_n$ upper left block of a random matrix $\boldsymbolΓ_n$ which is uniformly distributed on the orthogonal group O(n), can be approximated by independent standard normals? This problem is solved by two different approximation methods. First, we show that the variation distance between the joint distribution of entries of $Z_n$ and that of $p_nq_n$ independent standard normals goes to zero provided $p_n=o(\sqrt{n})$ and $q_n=o(\sqrt{n})$. We also show that the above vari…
We compute the limiting eigenvalue statistics at the edge of the spectrum of large Hermitian random matrices perturbed by the addition of small rank deterministic matrices. To be more precise, we consider random Hermitian matrices with independent Gaussian entries $M_{ij}, i\leq j$ with various expectations. We prove that the largest eigenvalue of such random matrices exhibits, in the large $N$ limit, various limiting distributions depending on both the eigenvalues of the matrix $(\mathbb{E}M_{ij})_{i,j=1}^N$ and its rank.
We consider a Gaussian rotationally invariant ensemble of random real totally symmetric tensors with independent normally distributed entries, and estimate the largest eigenvalue of a typical tensor in this ensemble by examining the rate of growth of a random initial vector under successive applications of a nonlinear map defined by the random tensor. In the limit of a large number of dimensions, we observe that a simple form of melonic dominance holds, and the quantity we study is effectively determined by a single Feynman diagram arising from the Gaussian average over the tensor components. …
For an $n\times n$ Laplacian random matrix $L$ with Gaussian entries it is proven that the fluctuations of the largest eigenvalue and the largest diagonal entry of $L/\sqrt{n-1}$ are Gumbel. We first establish suitable non-asymptotic estimates and bounds for the largest eigenvalue of $L$ in terms of the largest diagonal element of $L$. An expository review of existing results for the asymptotic spectrum of a Laplacian random matrix is also presented, with the goal of noting the differences from the corresponding classical results for Wigner random matrices. Extensions to Laplacian block random…
We derive estimates for the largest and smallest singular values of sparse rectangular $N\times n$ random matrices, assuming $\lim_{N,n\to\infty}\frac nN=y\in(0,1)$. We consider a model with sparsity parameter $p_N$ such that $Np_N\sim \log^{α}N$ for some $α>1$, and assume that the moments of the matrix elements satisfy the condition $\mathbf E|X_{jk}|^{4+δ}\le C<\infty$. We assume also that the entries of matrices we consider are truncated at the level $(Np_N)^{\frac12-\varkappa}$ with $\varkappa:=\fracδ{2(4+δ)}$.
We consider some random band matrices with band-width $N^μ$ whose entries are independent random variables with distribution tail in $x^{-α}$. We consider the largest eigenvalues and the associated eigenvectors and prove the following phase transition. On the one hand, when $α\textless{}2(1+μ^{-1})$, the largest eigenvalues have order $N^{(1+μ)/α}$, are asymptotically distributed as a Poisson process and their associated eigenvectors are essentially carried by two coordinates (this phenomenon has already been remarked by Soshnikov for full matrices with heavy tailed entries,i.e. when $α\textle…

For $N,n\in\mathbb N$, consider the sample covariance matrix $$S_N(T)=\frac{1}{N}XX^*$$ from a data set $X=C_N^{1/2}ZT_n^{1/2}$, where $Z=(Z_{i,j})$ is a $N\times n$ matrix having i.i.d. entries with mean zero and variance one, and $C_N, T_n$ are deterministic positive semi-definite Hermitian matrices of dimension $N$ and $n$, respectively. We assume that $(C_N)_N$ is bounded in spectral norm, and $T_n$ is a Toeplitz matrix with its largest eigenvalues diverging to infinity. The matrix $X$ can be viewed as a data set of an $N$-dimensional long memory stationary process having separable depende…
For a large class of random matrices $A$ with i.i.d. entries we show that the $\ell_1$-quotient property holds with probability exponentially close to 1. In contrast to previous results, our analysis does not require concentration of the entrywise distributions. We provide a unified proof that recovers corresponding previous results for (sub-)Gaussian and Weibull distributions. Our findings generalize known results on the geometry of random polytopes, providing lower bounds on the size of the largest Euclidean ball contained in the centrally symmetric polytope spanned by the columns of $A$. At…
We analyze the largest eigenvalue statistics of m-dependent heavy-tailed Wigner matrices as well as the associated sample covariance matrices having entry-wise regularly varying tail distributions with parameter $0<α<4$. Our analysis extends results in the previous literature for the corresponding random matrices with independent entries above the diagonal, by allowing for m-dependence between the entries of a given matrix. We prove that the limiting point process of extreme eigenvalues is a Poisson cluster process.
Let $\sqrt{N}+λ_{max}$ be the largest real eigenvalue of a random $N\times N$ matrix with independent $N(0,1)$ entries (the `real Ginibre matrix'). We study the large deviations behaviour of the limiting $N\rightarrow \infty$ distribution $P[λ_{max}<t]$ of the shifted maximal real eigenvalue $λ_{max}$. In particular, we prove that the right tail of this distribution is Gaussian: for $t>0$, \[ P[λ_{max}<t]=1-\frac{1}{4}\mbox{erfc}(t)+O\left(e^{-2t^2}\right). \] This is a rigorous confirmation of the corresponding result of Forrester and Nagao. We also prove that the left tail is exponential: fo…
We consider eigenvectors of adjacency matrices of Erdős-Rényi graphs and study the variation of their directions by resampling the entries randomly. Let $\mathbf{v}$ be the eigenvector associated with the second-largest eigenvalue of the Erdős-Rényi graphs. After choosing $k$ entries of the given matrix randomly and resampling them, we obtain another eigenvector $\mathbf{w}$ corresponding to the second-largest eigenvalue of the matrix obtained from the resampling procedure. We prove that, in a certain sparsity regime, $\mathbf{w}$ is "almost" orthogonal to $\mathbf{v}$ with high probability if…
We study largest singular values of large random matrices, each with mean of a fixed rank $K$. Our main result is a limit theorem as the number of rows and columns approach infinity, while their ratio approaches a positive constant. It provides a decomposition of the largest $K$ singular values into the deterministic rate of growth, random centered fluctuations given as explicit linear combinations of the entries of the matrix, and a term negligible in probability. We use this representation to establish asymptotic normality of the largest singular values for random matrices with means that ha…
We establish a quantitative version of the Tracy--Widom law for the largest eigenvalue of high dimensional sample covariance matrices. To be precise, we show that the fluctuations of the largest eigenvalue of a sample covariance matrix $X^*X$ converge to its Tracy--Widom limit at a rate nearly $N^{-1/3}$, where $X$ is an $M \times N$ random matrix whose entries are independent real or complex random variables, assuming that both $M$ and $N$ tend to infinity at a constant rate. This result improves the previous estimate $N^{-2/9}$ obtained by Wang [73]. Our proof relies on a Green function comp…
Given a large sample covariance matrix $S_N=\frac 1nΓ_N^{1/2}Z_N Z_N^*Γ_N^{1/2}\, ,$ where $Z_N$ is a $N\times n$ matrix with i.i.d. centered entries, and $Γ_N$ is a $N\times N$ deterministic Hermitian positive semidefinite matrix, we study the location and fluctuations of $λ_{\max}(S_N)$, the largest eigenvalue of $S_N$ as $N,n\to\infty$ and $Nn^{-1} \to r\in(0,\infty)$ in the case where the empirical distribution $μ^{Γ_N}$ of eigenvalues of $Γ_N$ is tight (in $N$) and $λ_{\max}(Γ_N)$ goes to $+\infty$. These conditions are in particular met when $μ^{Γ_N}$ weakly converges to a probability me…
We prove uniform estimates for the expected value of averages of order statistics of matrices in terms of their largest entries. As an application, we obtain similar probabilistic estimates for $\ell_p$ norms via real interpolation.
We study sample covariance matrices of the form $W=\frac 1n C C^T$, where $C$ is a $k\times n$ matrix with i.i.d. mean zero entries. This is a generalization of so-called Wishart matrices, where the entries of $C$ are independent and identically distributed standard normal random variables. Such matrices arise in statistics as sample covariance matrices, and the high-dimensional case, when $k$ is large, arises in the analysis of DNA experiments. We investigate the large deviation properties of the largest and smallest eigenvalues of $W$ when either $k$ is fixed and $n\to \infty$, or $k_n\to \i…
In this paper, we prove a necessary and sufficient condition for the edge universality of sample covariance matrices with general population. We consider sample covariance matrices of the form $\mathcal Q = TX(TX)^{*}$, where the sample $X$ is an $M_2\times N$ random matrix with $i.i.d.$ entries with mean zero and variance $N^{-1}$, and $T$ is an $M_1 \times M_2$ deterministic matrix satisfying $T^* T$ is diagonal. We study the asymptotic behavior of the largest eigenvalues of $\mathcal Q$ when $M:=\min\{M_1,M_2\}$ and $N$ tends to infinity with $\lim_{N \to \infty} {N}/{M}=d \in (0, \infty)$.…

This paper is concerned with the asymptotic distribution of the largest eigenvalues for some nonlinear random matrix ensemble stemming from the study of neural networks. More precisely we consider $M= \frac{1}{m} YY^\top$ with $Y=f(WX)$ where $W$ and $X$ are random rectangular matrices with i.i.d. centered entries. This models the data covariance matrix or the Conjugate Kernel of a single layered random Feed-Forward Neural Network. The function $f$ is applied entrywise and can be seen as the activation function of the neural network. We show that the largest eigenvalue has the same limit (in p…
We consider the eigenvalues of sample covariance matrices of the form $\mathcal{Q}=(Σ^{1/2}X)(Σ^{1/2}X)^*$. The sample $X$ is an $M\times N$ rectangular random matrix with real independent entries and the population covariance matrix $Σ$ is a positive definite diagonal matrix independent of $X$. Assuming that the limiting spectral density of $Σ$ exhibits convex decay at the right edge of the spectrum, in the limit $M, N \to \infty$ with $N/M \to d\in(0,\infty)$, we find a certain threshold $d_+$ such that for $d>d_+$ the limiting spectral distribution of $\mathcal{Q}$ also exhibits convex deca…
In this paper we study the joint distributional convergence of the largest eigenvalues of the sample covariance matrix of a $p$-dimensional time series with iid entries when $p$ converges to infinity together with the sample size $n$. We consider only heavy-tailed time series in the sense that the entries satisfy some regular variation condition which ensures that their fourth moment is infinite. In this case, Soshnikov [31, 32] and Auffinger et al. [2] proved the weak convergence of the point processes of the normalized eigenvalues of the sample covariance matrix towards an inhomogeneous Pois…
These expository notes are centered around the circular law theorem, which states that the empirical spectral distribution of a nxn random matrix with i.i.d. entries of variance 1/n tends to the uniform law on the unit disc of the complex plane as the dimension $n$ tends to infinity. This phenomenon is the non-Hermitian counterpart of the semi circular limit for Wigner random Hermitian matrices, and the quarter circular limit for Marchenko-Pastur random covariance matrices. We present a proof in a Gaussian case, due to Silverstein, based on a formula by Ginibre, and a proof of the universal ca…
