We consider eigenvectors of adjacency matrices of Erdős-Rényi graphs and study the variation of their directions by resampling the entries randomly. Let $\mathbf{v}$ be the eigenvector associated with the second-largest eigenvalue of the Erdős-Rényi graphs. After choosing $k$ entries of the given matrix randomly and resampling them, we obtain another eigenvector $\mathbf{w}$ corresponding to the second-largest eigenvalue of the matrix obtained from the resampling procedure. We prove that, in a certain sparsity regime, $\mathbf{w}$ is "almost" orthogonal to $\mathbf{v}$ with high probability if $k\gg N^{5/3}$. On the other hand, if $k\ll q^2 N^{2/3}$, where $q$ is the sparsity parameter, we observe that $\mathbf{v}$ and $\mathbf{w}$ are "almost" collinear. This extends the recent work of Bordenave, Lugosi and Zhivotovskiy to the Erdős-Rényi model.
We analyse the eigenvectors of the adjacency matrix of the Erdős-Rényi graph on $N$ vertices with edge probability $\frac{d}{N}$. We determine the full region of delocalization by determining the critical values of $\frac{d}{\log N}$ down to which delocalization persists: for $\frac{d}{\log N} > \frac{1}{\log 4 - 1}$ all eigenvectors are completely delocalized, and for $\frac{d}{\log N} > 1$ all eigenvectors with eigenvalues away from the spectral edges are completely delocalized. Below these critical values, it is known [arXiv:2005.14180, arXiv:2106.12519] that localized eigenvectors exist in…
We analyse the eigenvectors of the adjacency matrix of a critical Erdős-Rényi graph $\mathbb G(N,d/N)$, where $d$ is of order $\log N$. We show that its spectrum splits into two phases: a delocalized phase in the middle of the spectrum, where the eigenvectors are completely delocalized, and a semilocalized phase near the edges of the spectrum, where the eigenvectors are essentially localized on a small number of vertices. In the semilocalized phase the mass of an eigenvector is concentrated in a small number of disjoint balls centred around resonant vertices, in each of which it is a radial ex…
We prove a local law for the adjacency matrix of the Erdős-Rényi graph $G(N, p)$ in the supercritical regime $ pN \geq C\log N$ where $G(N,p)$ has with high probability no isolated vertices. In the same regime, we also prove the complete delocalization of the eigenvectors. Both results are false in the complementary subcritical regime. Our result improves the corresponding results from [11] by extending them all the way down to the critical scale $pN = O(\log N)$. A key ingredient of our proof is a new family of multilinear large deviation estimates for sparse random vectors, which carefully b…
We consider the bulk eigenvalue statistics of Laplacian matrices of large Erdős-Rényi random graphs in the regime $p \geq N^δ/N$ for any fixed $δ>0$. We prove a local law down to the optimal scale $η\gtrsim N^{-1}$ which implies that the eigenvectors are delocalized. We consider the local eigenvalue statistics and prove that both the gap statistics and averaged correlation functions coincide with the GOE in the bulk.
We prove that the bulk eigenvectors of sparse random matrices, i.e. the adjacency matrices of Erdős-Rényi graphs or random regular graphs, are asymptotically jointly normal, provided the averaged degree increases with the size of the graphs. Our methodology follows [6] by analyzing the eigenvector flow under Dyson Brownian motion, combining with an isotropic local law for Green's function. As an auxiliary result, we prove that for the eigenvector flow of Dyson Brownian motion with general initial data, the eigenvectors are asymptotically jointly normal in the direction $q$ after time $η_*\ll t…
In this paper we prove the semi-circular law for the eigenvalues of regular random graph $G_{n,d}$ in the case $d\rightarrow \infty$, complementing a previous result of McKay for fixed $d$. We also obtain a upper bound on the infinity norm of eigenvectors of Erdős-Rényi random graph $G(n,p)$, answering a question raised by Dekel-Lee-Linial.
We investigate the noise sensitivity of the top eigenvector of a sparse random symmetric matrix. Let $v$ be the top eigenvector of an $N\times N$ sparse random symmetric matrix with an average of $d$ non-zero centered entries per row. We resample $k$ randomly chosen entries of the matrix and obtain another realization of the random matrix with top eigenvector $v^{[k]}$. Building on recent results on sparse random matrices and a noise sensitivity analysis previously developed for Wigner matrices, we prove that, if $d\geq N^{2/9}$, with high probability, when $k \ll N^{5/3}$, the vectors $v$ and…
We consider the eigenvectors of symmetric matrices with independent heavy tailed entries, such as matrices with entries in the domain of attraction of $α$-stable laws, or adjacencymatrices of Erdos-Renyi graphs. We denote by $U=[u_{ij}]$ the eigenvectors matrix (corresponding to increasing eigenvalues) and prove that the bivariate process $$B^n_{s,t}:=n^{-1/2}\sum_{1\le i\le ns, 1\le j\le nt}(|u_{ij}|^2 -n^{-1}),$$ indexed by $s,t\in [0,1]$, converges in law to a non trivial Gaussian process. An interesting part of this result is the $n^{-1/2}$ rescaling, proving that from this point of view, …
Let $x \in S^{n-1}$ be a unit eigenvector of an $n \times n$ random matrix. This vector is delocalized if it is distributed roughly uniformly over the real or complex sphere. This intuitive notion can be quantified in various ways. In these lectures, we will concentrate on the no-gaps delocalization. This type of delocalization means that with high probability, any non-negligible subset of the support of $x$ carries a non-negligible mass. Proving the no-gaps delocalization requires establishing small ball probability bounds for the projections of random vector. Using Fourier transform, we will…
We consider Erdős-Rényi graphs $G(n,p_n)$ with large constant expected degree $λ$ and $p_n=λ/n$. Bordenave and Lelarge (2010) showed that the infinite-volume limit, in the Benjamini-Schramm topology, is a Galton-Watson tree with offspring distribution Pois($λ$) and the mean spectrum at the root of this tree has unbounded support and corresponds to the limiting spectral distribution of $G(n,p_n)$ as $n\to\infty$. We show that if one weights the edges by $1/\sqrtλ$ and sends $λ\to\infty$, then the support mostly vanishes and in fact, the limiting spectral distributions converge weakly to a semic…
We consider the ensemble of adjacency matrices of Erdős-Rényi random graphs, that is, graphs on $N$ vertices where every edge is chosen independently and with probability $p\equiv p(N)$. We rescale the matrix so that its bulk eigenvalues are of order one. We prove that, as long as $pN\to\infty$ (with a speed at least logarithmic in $N$), the density of eigenvalues of the Erdős-Rényi ensemble is given by the Wigner semicircle law for spectral windows of length larger than $N^{-1}$ (up to logarithmic corrections). As a consequence, all eigenvectors are proved to be completely delocalized in the …
We consider the quadratic form of a general deterministic matrix on the eigenvectors of an $N\times N$ Wigner matrix and prove that it has Gaussian fluctuation for each bulk eigenvector in the large $N$ limit. The proof is a combination of the energy method for the Dyson Brownian motion inspired by [Marcinek, Yau 2020] and our recent multi-resolvent local laws [Cipolloni, Erdős, Schröder 2020].
We consider the $t$-improper chromatic number of the Erd{\H o}s-R{é}nyi random graph $G(n,p)$. The t-improper chromatic number $χ^t(G)$ of $G$ is the smallest number of colours needed in a colouring of the vertices in which each colour class induces a subgraph of maximum degree at most $t$. If $t = 0$, then this is the usual notion of proper colouring. When the edge probability $p$ is constant, we provide a detailed description of the asymptotic behaviour of $χ^t(G(n,p))$ over the range of choices for the growth of $t = t(n)$.
We study how the spectral gap of the normalized Laplacian of a random graph changes when an edge is added to or removed from the graph. There are known examples of graphs where, perhaps counterintuitively, adding an edge can decrease the spectral gap, a phenomenon that is analogous to Braess's paradox in traffic networks. We show that this is often the case in random graphs in a strong sense. More precisely, we show that for typical instances of Erdős-Rényi random graphs $G(n,p)$ with constant edge density $p \in (0,1)$, the addition of a random edge will decrease the spectral gap with positiv…
We consider the adjacency matrix $A$ of the Erdős-Rényi graph on $N$ vertices with edge probability $d/N$. For $(\log \log N)^4 \ll d \lesssim \log N$, we prove that the eigenvalues near the spectral edge form asymptotically a Poisson process and the associated eigenvectors are exponentially localized. As a corollary, at the critical scale $d \asymp \log N$, the limiting distribution of the largest nontrivial eigenvalue does not match with any previously known distribution. Together with [arXiv:2005.14180], our result establishes the coexistence of a fully delocalized phase and a fully localiz…
Let $H$ be a Hermitian random matrix whose entries $H_{xy}$ are independent, centred random variables with variances $S_{xy} = \mathbb E|H_{xy}|^2$, where $x, y \in (\mathbb Z/L\mathbb Z)^d$ and $d \geq 1$. The variance $S_{xy}$ is negligible if $|x - y|$ is bigger than the band width $W$. For $ d = 1$ we prove that if $L \ll W^{1 + \frac{2}{7}}$ then the eigenvectors of $H$ are delocalized and that an averaged version of $|G_{xy}(z)|^2$ exhibits a diffusive behaviour, where $ G(z) = (H-z)^{-1}$ is the resolvent of $ H$. This improves the previous assumption $L \ll W^{1 + \frac{1}{4}}$ by Erdő…
We consider a general class of symmetric or Hermitian random band matrices $H=(h_{xy})_{x,y \in \llbracket 1,N\rrbracket^d}$ in any dimension $d\ge 1$, where the entries are independent, centered random variables with variances $s_{xy}=\mathbb E|h_{xy}|^2$. We assume that $s_{xy}$ vanishes if $|x-y|$ exceeds the band width $W$, and we are interested in the mesoscopic scale with $1\ll W\ll N$. Define the {\it{generalized resolvent}} of $H$ as $G(H,Z):=(H - Z)^{-1}$, where $Z$ is a deterministic diagonal matrix with entries $Z_{xx}\in \mathbb C_+$ for all $x$. Then we establish a precise high-pr…
Graph matching aims at finding the vertex correspondence between two unlabeled graphs that maximizes the total edge weight correlation. This amounts to solving a computationally intractable quadratic assignment problem. In this paper we propose a new spectral method, GRAph Matching by Pairwise eigen-Alignments (GRAMPA). Departing from prior spectral approaches that only compare top eigenvectors, or eigenvectors of the same order, GRAMPA first constructs a similarity matrix as a weighted sum of outer products between all pairs of eigenvectors of the two graphs, with weights given by a Cauchy ke…
Denote by $A$ the adjacency matrix of an Erdos-Renyi graph with bounded average degree. We consider the problem of maximizing $\langle A-E\{A\},X\rangle$ over the set of positive semidefinite matrices $X$ with diagonal entries $X_{ii}=1$. We prove that for large (bounded) average degree $d$, the value of this semidefinite program (SDP) is --with high probability-- $2n\sqrt{d} + n\, o(\sqrt{d})+o(n)$. For a random regular graph of degree $d$, we prove that the SDP value is $2n\sqrt{d-1}+o(n)$, matching a spectral upper bound. Informally, Erdos-Renyi graphs appear to behave similarly to random r…
