Conditions, related to Kulkarni's equivalence problem are considered for indefinite Riemannian and Kaehlerian manifolds. Corresponding theorems are obtained for the values of the Ricci tensor on isotropic vectors as well as for the values of the curvature tensor on degenerate holomorphic 2-planes.
In this study, we introduce indefinite sasakian statistical manifolds and lightlike hypersurfaces of an indefinite sasakian statistical manifold. Some relations among induced geometrical objects with respect to dual connections in a lightlike hypersurface of an indefinite sasakian manifold are obtained. Some examples related to these concepts are also presented. Finally, we prove that an invariant lightlike submanifold of indefinite sasakian statistical manifold is an indefinite sasakian statistical manifold.
An $η$-Einstein condition is introduced in the context of indefinite g.f.f-manifolds, and a few Schur-type lemmas for indefinite S-manifolds are provided.
We study lightlike submanifolds of indefinite statistical manifolds. Contrary to the classical theory of submanifolds of statistical manifolds, lightlike submanifolds of indefinite statistical manifolds need not to be statistical submanifold. Therefore we obtain some conditions for a lightlike submanifold of indefinite statistical manifolds to be a lightlike statistical submanifold. We derive the expression of statistical sectional curvature and finally obtain some conditions for the induced statistical Ricci tensor on a lightlike submanifold of indefinite statistical manifolds to be symmetric…
We present a compared analysis of some properties of indefinite almost $\mathcal{S}$-manifolds and indefinite $\mathcal{S}$-manifolds. We give some characterizations in terms of the Levi-Civita connection and of the characteristic vector fields. We study the sectional and $ϕ$-sectional curvature of indefinite almost $\mathcal{S}$-manifolds and state an expression of the curvature tensor field for the indefinite $\mathcal{S}$-space forms. We analyse the sectional curvature of indefinite $\mathcal{S}$-manifold in which the number of the spacelike characteristic vector fields is equal to that of …
We study two types of isotropic planes: weakly isotropic and strongly isotropic planes. We prove that a Riemannian manifold of indefinite metric is conformally flat if and only if its curvature tensor vanishes on all the strongly isotropic planes. We specialize the plane axiom for Riemannian manifolds of indefinite metrics. We show that manifolds satisfying plane axiom of weakly (strongly) isotropic planes are of constant sectional curvature (conformaly flat). Further we study analogous problems on almost Hermitian manifolds of indefinite metrics.
In the present paper, we introduce screen almost semi-invariant (SASI) lightlike submanifolds of indefinite Keahler manifolds. We obtain the neccesary and sufficient condition for the induced connection to be a metric connection on SASI-lightlike submanifolds and construct an example for this manifold. Also we find some conditions for integrability of distributions and investigate certain characterizations.
This research article introduces the concept of lightlike submanifolds of an indefinite Kenmotsu statistical manifold. Various results on geometry of contact CR and SCR-lightlike submanifolds have been developed. Some characterization theorems on the integrability of distributions and on the geodesicity of these submanifolds have been obtained. Appropriate examples have been presented.
We study hyper-spheres, spheres and circles, with respect to an indefinite metric, in a tangent space on a 4-dimensional differentiable manifold. The manifold is equipped with a positive definite metric and an additional tensor structure of type (1, 1)11. The fourth power of the additional structure is minus identity and its components form a skew-circulant matrix in some local coordinate system. The both structures are compatible and they determine an associated indefinite metric on the manifold.
In a metric $g.f.f$-manifold we study lightlike hypersurfaces $M$ tangent to the characteristic vector fields, and owing to the presence of the $f$-structure, we determine some decompositions of $TM$ and of a chosen screen distribution obtaining two distributions invariant with respect to the structure. We discuss the existence of a $g.f.f$-structure on a lightlike hypersurface and, under suitable hypotheses, we obtain an indefinite $\mathcal{S}$-structure on the leaves of an integrable distribution. The existence of totally umbilical lightlike hypersurfaces of an indefinite $\mathcal{S}$-spac…
We introduce higher order mean curvatures of screen almost conformal (SAC) half-lightlike submanifolds of indefinite contact manifolds, admitting a semi-symmetric non-metric connection, and use them to generalize some known results of [6]. Also, we derive a new set of integration formulae via the divergence of some special vector fields tangent to this submanifold. Several examples are also included to illustrate the main concepts.
In this paper, we introduce and study a new class of CR-lightlike submanifold of an indefinite nearly Sasakian manifold, called Quasi Generalized Cauchy-Riemann (QGCR) lightlike submanifold. We give some characterization theorems for the existence of QGCR-lightlike submanifolds and finally derive necessary and sufficient conditions for some distributions to be integrable.
We study the geometry of null hypersurfaces in indefinite complex contact manifolds. We prove several classification results for a variety of well-known null hypersurfaces, including the totally umbilic, totally screen umbilic, and the screen conformal ones. Furthermore, a characterization of the ambient space is given in case the underlying null hypersurface is totally contact umbilic, totally contact screen umbilic or contact screen conformal, i.e. we have proved that the ambient complex contact manifold must be a space of constant $GH$-sectional curvature of $-3$.
We consider a $3$-dimensional differentiable manifold with two circulant structures -- a Riemannian metric and an additional structure, whose third power is the identity. The structure is compatible with the metric such that an isometry is induced in any tangent space of the manifold. Further, we consider an associated metric with the Riemannian metric, which is necessary indefinite. We find equations of a sphere and of a circle, which are given in terms of the associated metric, with respect to the Riemannian metric.
In [21], the authors initiated the study of quasi generalized CR (QGCR)-null submanifolds. In this paper, attention is drawn to some distributions on ascreen QGCR-null submanifolds in an indefinite nearly cosymplectic manifold. We characterize totally umbilical and irrotational ascreen QGCR-null submanifolds. We finally discuss the geometric effects of geodesity conditions on such submanifold.
This paper is a survey of results obtained by the authors on the geometry of connections with totally skew-symmetric torsion on the following manifolds: almost complex manifolds with Norden metric, almost contact manifolds with B-metric and almost hypercomplex manifolds with Hermitian and anti-Hermitian metric.
The concept of quasi generalized CR-lightlike was first introduced by the authors in [18]. In this paper, we focus on ascreen and co-screen quasi generalized CR-lightlike submanifolds of indefinite nearly $μ$-Sasakian manifold. We prove an existence theorem for minimal ascreen quasi generalized CR-lightlike submanifolds admitting a metric connection. Classification theorems on nearly parallel and auto-parallel distributions on a co-screen quasi generalized CR-lightlike submanifold are also given. Several examples are also constructed, where necessary, to illustrate the main ideas.
We introduce a new class of lightlike submanifolds, namely, Screen Transversal Cauchy Riemann (STCR)-lightlike submanifolds, of indefinite Kaehler manifolds. We show that this new class is an umbrella of screen transversal lightlike, screen transversal totally real lightlike and CR-lightlike submanifolds. We give a few examples of a STCR lightlike submanifold, investigate the integrability of various distributions, obtain a characterization of such lightlike submanifolds in a complex space form and find new conditions for the induced connection to be a metric connection. Moreover, we investiga…
This is an exposition of some recent results on ECS manifolds, by which we mean pseudo-Riemannian manifolds of dimensions greater than 3 that are neither conformally flat nor locally symmetric, and have parallel Weyl tensor. All ECS metrics are indefinite. We state two classification theorems, describing the local structure of ECS manifolds, and outline an argument showing that compact ECS manifolds exist in infinitely many dimensions greater than 4. We also discuss some properties of compact manifolds that admit ECS metrics, and provide a list of open questions about compact ECS manifolds.
Compact pseudo-Riemannian manifolds that have parallel Weyl tensor without being conformally flat or locally symmetric are known to exist in infinitely many dimensions greater than 4. We prove some general topological properties of such manifolds, namely, vanishing of the Euler characteristic and real Pontryagin classes, and infiniteness of the fundamental group. We also show that, in the Lorentzian case, each of them is at least 5-dimensional and admits a two-fold cover which is a bundle over the circle.
We present a definition of indefinite Kasparov modules, a generalisation of unbounded Kasparov modules modelling non-symmetric and non-elliptic (e.g. hyperbolic) operators. Our main theorem shows that to each indefinite Kasparov module we can associate a pair of (genuine) Kasparov modules, and that this process is reversible. We present three examples of our framework: the Dirac operator on a pseudo-Riemannian spin manifold (i.e. a manifold with an indefinite metric), the harmonic oscillator, and the construction via the Kasparov product of an indefinite spectral triple from a family of spectr…
We classify those curvature-homogeneous Einstein four-manifolds, of all metric signatures, which have a complex-diagonalizable curvature operator. They all turn out to be locally homogeneous. More precisely, any such manifold must be either locally symmetric or locally isometric to a suitable Lie group with a left-invariant metric. To show this we explicitly determine the possible local-isometry types of manifolds that have the properties named above, but are not locally symmetric.
We improve our previous results on indefinite Kasparov modules, which provide a generalisation of unbounded Kasparov modules modelling non-symmetric and non-elliptic (e.g. hyperbolic) operators. In particular, we can weaken the assumptions that are imposed on indefinite Kasparov modules. Using a new theorem by Lesch and Mesland on the self-adjointness and regularity of the sum of two weakly anticommuting operators, we show that we still have an equivalence between indefinite Kasparov modules and pairs of Kasparov modules. Importantly, the weakened version of indefinite Kasparov modules now inc…
First, we prove that indefinite Sasakian manifolds do not admit any screen conformal $r$-null submanifolds, tangent to the structure vector field. We, therefore, define a special class of null submanifolds, called; {\it contact screen conformal} $r$-null submanifold of indefinite Sasakian manifolds. Several characterization results, on the above class of null submanifolds, are proved. In particular, we prove that such null submanifolds exist in indefinite Sasakian space forms of constant holomorphic sectional curvatures of $-3$.
In this paper we study the 3-dimensional $(\varepsilon) $-para Sasakian manifolds. We obtain an necessary and sufficient condition for an $(\varepsilon ) $-para Sasakian 3 -manifold to be an indefinite space form. We show that a Ricci-semi-symmetric $(\varepsilon) $-para Sasakian 3 -manifold is an indefinite space form. We investigate the necessary and sufficient condition for an $(\varepsilon) $-para Sasakian 3 -manifold to be locally $φ$-symmetric. It is proved that in an $ (\varepsilon) $-para Sasakian 3-manifold with $η$ -parallel Ricci tensor the scalar curvature is constant. It is also s…
We prove a generalized version of the Morse index theorem for geodesics endowed with a non positive definite metric tensor (semi-Riemannian manifolds). We apply the result to obtain lower estimates on the number of geodesics joining two fixed non conjugate points in certain classes of manifolds. More specifically, we consider semi-Riemannian manifolds $(M,\mathfrak g)$ admitting a smooth distribution spanned by commuting Killing vector fields and containing a maximal negative distribution for $\mathfrak$. In particular we obtain Morse relations for stationary semi-Riemannian manifolds and for …
We classify the connected pseudo-Riemannian manifolds of signature $(p,q)$ with $q\ge5$ so that at each point of $M$ the skew-symmetric curvature operator has constant rank 2 and constant Jordan normal form on the set of spacelike 2 planes and so that the skew-symmetric curvature operator is not nilpotent for at least one point of $M$.
Let $(g, X)$ be a Kähler-Ricci soliton on a complex manifold $M$. We prove that if the Kähler manifold $(M, g)$ can be Kähler immersed into a definite or indefinite complex space form of constant holomorphic sectional curvature $2c$, then $g$ is Einstein. Moreover, its Einstein constant is a rational multiple of $c$.
We derive the Chern-Gauss-Bonnet Theorem for manifolds with smooth non-degenerate boundary in the pseudo-Riemannian context from the corresponding result in the Riemannian setting by examining the Euler-Lagrange equations associated to the Pfaffian of a complex "metric" on the tangent space and then applying analytic continuation.
In this paper we introduce the concept of $(\varepsilon)$-almost paracontact manifolds, and in particular, of $(\varepsilon)$-para Sasakian manifolds. Several examples are presented. Some typical identities for curvature tensor and Ricci tensor of $(\varepsilon)$-para Sasakian manifolds are obtained. We prove that if a semi-Riemannian manifold is one of flat, proper recurrent or proper Ricci-recurrent, then it can not admit an $(\varepsilon)$-para Sasakian structure. We show that, for an $(\varepsilon)$-para Sasakian manifold, the conditions of being symmetric, semi-symmetric or of constant se…
Having developed a description of indefinite extrinsic symmetric spaces by corresponding infinitesimal objects in the preceding paper we now study the classification problem for these algebraic objects. In most cases the transvection group of an indefinite extrinsic symmetric space is not semisimple, which makes the classification difficult. We use the recently developed method of quadratic extensions for (h,K)-invariant metric Lie algebras to tackle this problem. We obtain a one-to-one correspondence between isometry classes of extrinsic symmetric spaces and a certain cohomology set. This all…
We show that $3$-Sasaki structures admit a natural description in terms of projective differential geometry. This description provides a concrete link between $3$-Sasaki structures and several other geometries and constructions via a single unifying picture. First we establish that a $3$-Sasaki structure may be understood as a projective structure equipped with a certain holonomy reduction to the (possibly indefinite) unitary quaternionic group $\textrm{Sp}(p,q)$, namely a parallel hyperkähler structure on the projective tractor bundle satisfying a particular genericity condition. For the conv…
In the present paper, we study globally framed f-manifolds in the particular setting of indefinite S-manifolds for both spacelike and timelike cases. We prove that if $M = N^{\perp} \times_f N^T$ is a warped CR-submanifold such that $N^{\perp}$ is $ϕ$?-anti-invariant and NT is $ϕ$?-invariant, then M is a CR-product. We show that the second fundamental form of a contact CR warped product of a indefinite S space form satisfies a geometric inequality, $\|h\|^2 \geq p{3\|\nabla lnf\|^2 - \triangle lnf + (c + 2)k + 1}$.
We prove the following results: An almost Hermitian manifold of indefinite metric is of pointwise constant holomorphic sectional curvature if the holomorphic sectional curvature is bounded from above and from below. If the antiholomorphic sectional curvature is bounded either from above or from below, then the manifold is of pointwise constant antiholomorphic sectional curvature. Similar results are obtained for almost Hermitian manifolds of definite metric.
For a Kahler metric, the Riemannian scalar curvature is equal to twice the Chern scalar curvature. The question we address here is whether this equivalence can hold for a non-Kahler Hermitian metric. For such metrics, if they exist, the Chern scalar curvature would have the same geometric meaning as the Riemannian scalar curvature. Recently, Liu-Yang showed that if this equivalence of scalar curvatures holds even in average over a compact Hermitian manifold, then the metric must in fact be Kahler. However, we prove that a certain class of noncompact complex manifolds do admit Hermitian metr…
The equivalence problem of curves with values in a Riemannian manifold, is solved. The domain of validity of Frenet's theorem is shown to be the spaces of constant curvature. For a general Riemannian manifold new invariants must thus be added. There are two important generic classes of curves; namely, Frenet curves and a new class, called curves "in normal position". They coincide in dimensions $\leq 4$ only. A sharp bound for asymptotic stability of differential invariants is obtained, the complete systems of invariants are characterized, and a procedure of generation is presented. Different …
In this paper we introduce radical transversal lightlike hypersurfaces of almost complex manifolds with Norden metric. The study of these hypersurfaces is motivated by the fact that for indefinite almost Hermitian manifolds this class of lightlike hypersurfaces does not exist. We also establish that radical transversal lightlike hypersurfaces of almost complex manifolds with Norden metric have nice properties as a unique screen distribution and a symmetric Ricci tensor of the considered hypersurfaces of Kaehler manifolds with Norden metric. We obtain new results about lightlike hypersurfaces c…
We give an overview of some recent results in hypersymplectic and para-quaternionic Kahler geometry, and introduce the notion of split three-Sasakian manifold. In particular, we discuss the twistor spaces and Swann bundles of para-quaternionic Kahler manifolds. These are used to classify examples with a fully homogeneous action of a semi-simple Lie group, and to construct distinct para-quaternionic Kahler metrics from indefinite real analytic conformal manifolds. We also indicate how the theory of toric varieties gives rise to constructions of hypersymplectic manifolds.
It is shown that in every dimension n=3j+2, j=1,2,3,..., there exist compact pseudo-Riemannian manifolds with parallel Weyl tensor, which are Ricci-recurrent, but neither conformally flat nor locally symmetric, and represent all indefinite metric signatures. The manifolds in question are diffeomorphic to nontrivial torus bundles over the circle. They all arise from a construction that a priori yields bundles over the circle, having as the fibre either a torus, or a 2-step nilmanifold with a complete flat torsionfree connection; our argument only realizes the torus case.
The total space of the tangent bundle of a Kähler manifold admits a canonical Kähler structure. Parallel translation identifies the space ${\Bbb{T}}$ of oriented affine lines in ${\Bbb{R}}^3$ with the tangent bundle of $S^2$. Thus, the round metric on $S^2$ induces a Kähler structure on ${\Bbb{T}}$ which turns out to have a metric of neutral signature. It is shown that the isometry group of this metric is isomorphic to the isometry group of the Euclidean metric on ${\Bbb{R}}^3$. The geodesics of this metric are either planes or helicoids in ${\Bbb{R}}^3$. The signature of the metric induced on…
We study the quasi-convergence equivalence of some families of metrics on locally homogeneous closed 4-manifolds with trivial isotropy group, and identify the dimension of each equivalence class under certain conditions.
These notes give an introduction to the equivalence problem of sub-Riemannian manifolds. We first introduce preliminaries in terms of connections, frame bundles and sub-Riemannian geometry. Then we arrive to the main aim of these notes, which is to give the description of the canonical grading and connection existing on sub-Riemann manifolds with constant symbol. These structures are exactly what is needed in order to determine if two manifolds are isometric. We give three concrete examples, which are Engel (2,3,4)-manifolds, contact manifolds and Cartan (2,3,5)-manifolds. These notes are an e…
In this paper, the Cartan tensors of the $(α,β)$-norms are investigated in details. Then an equivalence theorem of $(α,β)$-norms is proved. As a consequence in Finsler geometry, general $(α,β)$-metrics on smooth manifolds of dimension $n\geq4$ with vanishing Landsberg curvatures must be Berwald manifolds.
We apply E. Cartan's method of equivalence to classify 7-dimensional, 2-nondegenerate CR manifolds $M$ up to local CR equivalence in the case that the cubic form of $M$ satisfies a certain symmetry property with respect to the Levi form of $M$. The solution to the equivalence problem is given by a parallelism on a principal bundle over $M$. When the nondegenerate part of the Levi form has definite signature, the parallelism takes values in $\mathfrak{su}(2,2)$. When this signature is split and an additional "isotropy-switching" hypothesis is satisfied, the parallelism takes values in $\mathfra…
This note studies the equivalencies among convergences of Ricci-flat Kähler-Einstein metrics on Calabi-Yau manifolds, cohomology classes and potential functions.
We study differential invariants of the third order linear differential operators and use them to find conditions for equivalence of differential operators acting in line bundles on two dimensional manifolds with respect to groups of authomorphisms.
In a noncompact harmonic manifold $M$ we establish finite dimensionality of the eigenspaces $V_λ$ generated by radial eigenfunctions of the form $\cosh r + c$. As a consequence, for such harmonic manifolds, we give an isometric imbedding of $M$ into $(V_λ,B)$, where $B$ is a nondegenerate symmetric bilinear indefinite form on $V_λ$ (analogous to the imbedding of the real hyperbolic space $I\!\!\!H^{n}$ into $I\!\!\!R^{n+1}$ with the indefinite form $Q(x,x) = -x_0^2 + \sum x_i^2$). Finally we give certain conditions under which $M$ is symmetric.
We reduce to various absolute parallelisms, namely to certain {e}-structures on manifolds of dimensions 7, 6, 5, the biholomorphic equivalence problem or the intrinsic CR equivalence problem for generic submanifolds M^5 in C^4 of CR dimension 1 and of codimension 3 that are maximally minimal and are geometry-preserving deformations of one natural cubic model of Beloshapka, somewhere else called the General Class III-1 of 5-dimensional CR manifolds. Some inspiration links exist with the treatment of the General Class II previously done in 2007 by Beloshapka, Ezhov, Schmalz, and also with the cl…
