We give an overview of some recent results in hypersymplectic and para-quaternionic Kahler geometry, and introduce the notion of split three-Sasakian manifold. In particular, we discuss the twistor spaces and Swann bundles of para-quaternionic Kahler manifolds. These are used to classify examples with a fully homogeneous action of a semi-simple Lie group, and to construct distinct para-quaternionic Kahler metrics from indefinite real analytic conformal manifolds. We also indicate how the theory of toric varieties gives rise to constructions of hypersymplectic manifolds.
We explicitly describe all SO(7)-invariant almost quaternion-Hermitian structures on the twistor space of the six sphere and determine the types of their intrinsic torsion.
We exploit the Cartan-Kähler theory to prove the local existence of real analytic quaternionic contact structures for any prescribed values of the respective curvature functions and their covariant derivatives at a given point on a manifold. We show that, in a certain sense, the different real analytic quaternionic contact geometries in $4n+3$ dimensions depend, modulo diffeomorphisms, on $2n+2$ real analytic functions of $2n+3$ variables.
New universal invariant operators are introduced in a class of geometries which include the quaternionic structures and their generalisations as well as 4-dimensional conformal (spin) geometries. It is shown that, in a broad sense, all invariants and invariant operators arise from these universal operators and that they may be used to reduce all invariants problems to corresponding algebraic problems involving homomorphisms between modules of certain parabolic subgroups of Lie groups. Explicit application of the operators is illustrated by the construction of all non-standard operators between…
Gray & Hervella gave a classification of almost Hermitian structures (g,I) into 16 classes. We systematically study the interaction between these classes when one has an almost hyper-Hermitian structure (g,I,J,K). In general dimension we find at most 167 different almost hyper-Hermitian structures. In particular, we obtain a number of relations that give hyperKäher or locally conformal hyperKähler structures, thus generalising a result of Hitchin. We also study the types of almost quaternion-Hermitian geometries that arise and tabulate the results.
Motivated by the analogies between the projective and the almost quaternionic geometries, we study the generalized planar curves and mappings. We follow, recover, and extend the classical approach as developed by Mikes and Sinyukov. Then we exploit the impact of the general results in the almost quaternionic geometry. In particular we show, that the natural class of H--planar curves coincides with the class of all geodesics of the so called Weyl connections and preserving this class turns out to be the necessary and sufficient condition on diffeomorphisms to become morphisms of almost quaterni…
We present a uniform framework generalising and extending the classical theories of projective differential geometry, c-projective geometry, and almost quaternionic geometry. Such geometries, which we call \emph{projective parabolic geometries}, are abelian parabolic geometries whose flat model is an R-space $G\cdot\mathfrak{p}$ in the infinitesimal isotropy representation $\mathbb{W}$ of a larger self-dual symmetric R-space $H\cdot\mathfrak{q}$. We also give a classification of projective parabolic geometries with $H\cdot\mathfrak{q}$ irreducible which, in addition to the aforementioned class…
This is a survey on quaternion Hermitian Weyl (locally conformally quaternion Kähler) and hyperhermitian Weyl (locally conformally hyperkähler) manifolds. These geometries appear by requesting the compatibility of some quaternion Hermitian or hyperhermitian structure with a Weyl structure. The motivation for such a study is two-fold: it comes from the constantly growing interest in Weyl (and Einstein-Weyl) geometry and, on the other hand, from the necessity of understanding the existing classes of quaternion Hermitian manifolds.
We investigate an obstruction for hypersymplectic manifolds equipped with a free, isometric action of SU(1,1). When the obstruction vanishes, we show that the manifold is a metric cone over a split 3-Sasakian manifold. Furthermore, if the action of SU(1,1) is also proper, then the hypersymplectic manifold fibres over a para-quaternionic Kahler manifold. We conclude the article with some examples for which the obstruction vanishes. In particular, we show that the moduli space to Nahm-Schmid equations admits a fibration over a para-quaternionic Kahler manifold.
We report on some aspects and recent progress in certain problems in the sub-Riemannian CR and quaternionic contact (QC) geometries. The focus are the corresponding Yamabe problems on the round spheres, the Lichnerowicz-Obata first eigenvalue estimates, and the relation between these two problems. A motivation from the Riemannian case highlights new and old ideas which are then developed in the settings of Iwasawa sub-Riemannian geometries.
We study the intrinsic torsion of almost quaternion-Hermitian manifolds via the exterior algebra. In particular, we show how it is determined by particular three-forms formed from simple combinations of the exterior derivatives of the local Kaehler forms. This gives a practical method to compute the intrinsic torsion and is applied in a number of examples. In addition we find simple characterisations of HKT and QKT geometries entirely in the exterior algebra and compute how the intrinsic torsion changes under a twist construction.
We show that infinitesimal automorphisms and infinitesimal deformations of parabolic geometries can be nicely described in terms of the twisted de-Rham sequence associated to a certain linear connection on the adjoint tractor bundle. For regular normal geometries, this description can be related to the underlying geometric structure using the machinery of BGG sequences. In the locally flat case, this leads to a deformation complex, which generalizes the is well know complex for locally conformally flat manifolds. Recently, a theory of subcomplexes in BGG sequences has been developed. This appl…
The generalized Feix--Kaledin construction shows that c-projective $2n$-manifolds with curvature of type $(1,1)$ are precisely the submanifolds of quaternionic $4n$-manifolds which are fixed points set of a special type of quaternionic $S^1$ action $v$. In this paper, we consider this construction in the presence of infinitesimal symmetries of the two geometries. First, we prove that the submaximally symmetric c-projective model with type $(1,1)$ curvature is a submanifold of a submaximally symmetric quaternionic model, and show how this fits into the construction. We give conditions for when …
Methods of parabolic geometries have been recently used to construct a class of elliptic complexes on quaternionic manifolds, the Salamon's complex being the simplest case. The purpose of this paper is to describe an algorithm how to compute their analytical indices in terms of characteristic classes. Using this, we are able to derive some topological obstructions to existence of quaternionic structures on manifolds.
The aim of this article is the proof of the following result: Let M be a connected manifold endowed with a regular Cartan geometry modelled on the boundary X of the d-dimensional real (resp. complex, resp. quaternionic, resp. octonionic) hyperbolic space. If the group of automorphisms of M does not act properly on M, then M is geometrically isomorphic to: - X if M is compact. - X minus a point in the other cases.
We introduce the notion of even Clifford structures on Riemannian manifolds, a framework generalizing almost Hermitian and quaternion-Hermitian geometries. We give the complete classification of manifolds carrying parallel even Clifford structures: Kähler, quaternion-Kähler and Riemannian products of quaternion-Kähler manifolds, several classes of 8-dimensional manifolds, families of real, complex and quaternionic Grassmannians, as well as Rosenfeld's elliptic projective planes, which are symmetric spaces associated to the exceptional simple Lie groups. As an application, we classify all Riema…
A spacelike surface in the Minkowski 3-space is called a constant slope surface if its position vector makes a constant angle with the normal at each point on the surface. These surfaces completely classified in [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 385 (1) (2012) 208-220]. In this study, we give some relations between split quaternions and spacelike constant slope surfaces in Minkowski 3-space. We show that spacelike constant slope surfaces can be reparametrized by using rotation matrices corresponding to unit timelike quaternions with the spacelike vector parts and homothetic motions. Subsequently we give s…
We construct infinite families of regular normal Cartan geometries with nonvanishing curvature and essential automorphisms on closed manifolds for many higher rank parabolic model geometries. To do this, we use particular elements of the kernel of the Kostant Laplacian to construct homogeneous Cartan geometries of the desired type, giving a global realization of an elegant local construction due to Kruglikov and The, and then modify these homogeneous geometries to make their base manifolds compact. As a demonstration, we apply the construction to quaternionic contact structrures of mixed signa…
We study the problem of existence of geometric structures on compact complex surfaces that are related to split quaternions. These structures, called para-hypercomplex, para-hyperhermitian and para-hyperkähler are analogs of the hypercomplex, hyperhermitian and hyperkähler structures in the definite case. We show that a compact oriented 4-manifold carries a para-hyperkähler structure iff it has a metric of split signature together with two parallel, orthogonal and null vector fields. Every compact complex surface admiting a para-hyperhermitian structure has vanishing first Chern class and we s…
BGG-sequences offer a uniform construction for invariant differential operators for a large class of geometric structures called parabolic geometries. For locally flat geometries, the resulting sequences are complexes, but in general the compositions of the operators in such a sequence are nonzero. In this paper, we show that under appropriate torsion freeness and/or semi-flatness assumptions certain parts of all BGG sequences are complexes. Several examples of structures, including quaternionic structures, hypersurface type CR structures and quaternionic contact structures are discussed in de…
Following the point of view of Gray and Hervella, we derive detailed conditions which characterize each one of the classes of almost quaternion-Hermitian $4n$-manifolds, $n>1$. Previously, by completing a basic result of A. Swann, we give explicit descriptions of the tensors contained in the space of covariant derivatives of the fundamental form $Ω$ and split the coderivative of $Ω$ into its ${\sl Sp}(n){\sl Sp}(1)$-components. For $4n>8$, A. Swann also proved that all the information about the intrinsic torsion $\nabla Ω$ is contained in the exterior derivative ${\sl d} Ω$. Thus, we give alte…
We generalise the hyper-Kahler/quaternionic Kahler (HK/QK) correspondence to include para-geometries, and present a new concise proof that the target manifold of the HK/QK correspondence is quaternionic Kahler. As an application, we construct one-parameter deformations of the temporal and Euclidean supergravity c-map metrics and show that they are para-quaternionic Kahler.
A universal lower bound for the first positive eigenvalue of the Dirac operator on a compact quaternionic Kaehler manifold M of positive scalar curvature is calculated. It is shown that it is equal to the first positive eigenvalue on the quaternionic projective space. For this, the horizontal tangent bundle on the canonical SO(3)-bundle over M is equipped with a hyperkaehlerian structure and the corresponding splitting of the horizontal spinor bundle is considered. The desired estimate is obtained by looking at hyperkaehlerian twistor operators on horizontal spinors.
We show that $3$-Sasaki structures admit a natural description in terms of projective differential geometry. This description provides a concrete link between $3$-Sasaki structures and several other geometries and constructions via a single unifying picture. First we establish that a $3$-Sasaki structure may be understood as a projective structure equipped with a certain holonomy reduction to the (possibly indefinite) unitary quaternionic group $\textrm{Sp}(p,q)$, namely a parallel hyperkähler structure on the projective tractor bundle satisfying a particular genericity condition. For the conv…
3-quasi-Sasakian manifolds were studied systematically by the authors in a recent paper as a suitable setting unifying 3-Sasakian and 3-cosymplectic geometries. This paper throws new light on their geometric structure which reveals to be generally richer compared to the 3-Sasakian subclass. In fact, it turns out that they are multiply foliated by four distinct fundamental foliations. The study of the transversal geometries with respect to these foliations allows us to link the 3-quasi-Sasakian manifolds to the more famous hyper-Kaehler and quaternionic-Kaehler geometries. Furthermore, we stron…
This paper demonstrates the power of the calculus developed in the two previous parts of the series for all real forms of the almost Hermitian symmetric structures on smooth manifolds, including e.g. conformal Riemannian and almost quaternionic geometries. Exploiting some finite dimensional representation theory of simple Lie algebras, we give explicit formulae for distinguished invariant curved analogues of the standard operators in terms of the linear connections belonging to the structures in question, so in particular we prove their existence. Moreover, we prove that these formulae for k-t…
Firstly we give a condition to split off the K"ahler factor from a nearly pseudo-K"ahler manifold and apply this to get a structure result in dimension 8. Secondly we extend the construction of nearly K"ahler manifolds from twistor spaces to negatively curved quaternionic K"ahler manifolds and para-quaternionic K"ahler manifolds. The class of nearly pseudo-K"ahler manifolds obtained from this construction is characterized by a holonomic condition. The combination of these results enables us to give a classification result in (real) dimension 10. Moreover, we show that a strict nearly pseudo-K"…
BPS solutions of 5-dimensional supergravity correspond to certain gradient flows on the product M x N of a quaternionic-Kaehler manifold M of negative scalar curvature and a very special real manifold N of dimension n >=0. Such gradient flows are generated by the `energy function' f = P^2, where P is a (bundle-valued) moment map associated to n+1 Killing vector fields on M. We calculate the Hessian of f at critical points and derive some properties of its spectrum for general quaternionic-Kaehler manifolds. For the homogeneous quaternionic-Kaehler manifolds we prove more specific results depen…
We study geometric structures arising from Hermitian forms on linear spaces over real algebras beyond the division ones. Our focus is on the dual numbers, the split-complex numbers, and the split-quaternions. The corresponding geometric structures are employed to describe the spaces of oriented geodesics in the hyperbolic plane, the Euclidean plane, and the round $2$-sphere. We also introduce a simple and natural geometric transition between these spaces. Finally, we present a projective model for the hyperbolic bidisc, that is, the Riemannian product of two hyperbolic discs.
In this article we introduce $A$-valued Einstein-Hilbert-Palatini functional ($A$-EHP) over a n-manifold $M$, where $A$ is an arbitrary graded algebra, as a generalization of the functional arising in the study of the first order formulation of gravity. We show that if $A$ is weak $(k,s)$-solvable, then $A$-EHP is non-null only if $n<k+s+3$. We prove that essentially all algebras modeling classical geometries (except semi-Riemannian geometries with specific signatures) satisfy this condition for $k=1$ and $s=2$, including Hitchin's generalized complex geometry, Pantilie's generalized quaternio…
The purpose of this book is to give an exposition of geometry, from a point of view which complements Klein's Erlangen program. The emphasis is on extending the classical Euclidean geometry to the finite case, but it goes beyond that. After a brief introduction, which gives the main theme, I present the main results, according to a synthetic view of the subject, rather that chronologically. First, I give some variation on the axiomatic treatment of projective geometry, followed by new results on quaternionian geometry, followed by results in geometry over the reals which are generalized over a…
The purpose of this paper is two-fold: On the one side we would like to close a gap on the classification of vector bundles over $5$-manifolds. Therefore it will be necessary to study quaternionic line bundles over $5$-manifolds which are in $1-1$ correspondence to elements in the first cohomotopy group $π^4(M)=[M,S^4]$ of $M$. From previous results this group fits into a short exact sequence, which splits into $H^4(M;\mathbb Z)\oplus\mathbb Z_2$ if $M$ is spin. The second intent is to provide a bordism theoretic splitting map for this short exact sequence, which will lead to a $\mathbb Z_2$-i…
The split version of the Freudenthal-Tits magic square stems from Lie theory and constructs a Lie algebra starting from two split composition algebras [3, 17, 18]. The geometries appearing in the second row are Severi-Brauer varieties [20]. We provide an easy uniform axiomatization of these geometries and related ones, over an arbitrary field. In particular we investigate the entry A2 \times A2 in the magic square, characterizing Hermitian Veronese varieties, Segre varieties and embeddings of Hjelmslev planes of level 2 over the dual numbers. In fact this amounts to a common characterization o…
