We investigate theoretically the dynamics of magnetization coupled to the surface Dirac fermions of a three dimensional topological insulator, by deriving the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation in the presence of charge current. Both the inverse spin-Galvanic effect and the Gilbert damping coefficient $α$ are related to the two-dimensional diagonal conductivity $σ_{xx}$ of the Dirac fermion, while the Berry phase of the ferromagnetic moment to the Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}$. The spin transfer torque and the so-called $β$-terms are shown to be negligibly small. Anomalous behaviors in various phenomena including the ferromagnetic resonance are predicted in terms of this LLG equation.
The dependence on temperature of the spin magnetization of a two-dimensional electron gas at filling factor unity is studied. Using classical Monte Carlo simulations we analyze the effect that the equivalence between topological and electrical charge has on the the behavior of the magnetization. We find that at intermediate temperatures the spin polarization increases in a thirty per cent due to the Hartree interaction between charge fluctuations.
We report that the irreversible magnetization switching process in ferromagnetic nanoparticles is governed by the formation and dynamics of topological point-defects in the form of hedgehog-antihedgehog pairs. After nucleation, these pairs rapidly separate with speeds exceeding domain wall velocities, and they generate an emergent electric field of solenoidal character and substantial magnitude.
We study dynamics of the magnetization coupled to the surface Dirac fermions of a three di- mensional topological insulator. By solving the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation in the presence of charge current, we find current induced magnetization dynamics and discuss the possibility of mag- netization reversal. The torque from the current injection depends on the transmission probability through the ferromagnet and shows nontrivial dependence on the exchange coupling. The mag- netization dynamics is a direct manifestation of the inverse spin-galvanic effect and hence another ferromagnet is unne…
The discovery of quantum spin Hall materials with huge bulk gaps in experiment, such as bismuthene, provides a versatile platform for topological devices. We propose a topological quantum dot (QD) device in bismuthene ribbon in which two planar magnetization areas separate the sample into a QD and two leads. At zero temperature, peaks of differential conductance emerge, demonstrating the discrete energy levels from the confined topological edge states. The key parameters of the QD, the tunneling coupling strength with the leads and the discrete energy levels, can be controlled by the planar ma…
We theoretically study the magnetization dynamics of a thin ferromagnetic film exchange-coupled with a surface of a strong three-dimensional topological insulator. We focus on the role of electronic zero modes imprinted by domain walls (DW's) or other topological textures in the magnetic film. Thermodynamically reciprocal hydrodynamic equations of motion are derived for the DW responding to electronic spin torques, on the one hand, and fictitious electromotive forces in the electronic chiral mode fomented by the DW, on the other. An experimental realization illustrating this physics is propose…
We theoretically study the spin and charge generation along with the electron transport on a disordered surface of a doped three-dimensional topological insulator/magnetic insulator junction by using Green's function techniques. We find that the spin and charge current are induced by not only local but also nonlocal magnetization dynamics through nonmagnetic impurity scattering on the disordered surface of the doped topological insulator. We also clarify that the spin current as well as charge density are induced by spatially inhomogeneous magnetization dynamics, and the spin current diffusive…
Established forms of electromagnetic coupling are usually conservative (in insulators) or dissipative (in metals and semiconductors). Here we point out the possibility of nondissipative electric driving of magnetization dynamics, if the valence electronic states have nontrivial topology in the combined space of crystal momentum and magnetization configuration. We provide a hybrid insulator system to demonstrate that the topology-based nonconservative electrical generalized force is capable of supporting sustained magnetization motion in the presence of Gilbert damping, with quantized and stead…
We report angular-dependent spin-wave spectroscopy on kagome artificial spin ice made of large arrays of interconnected Ni80Fe20 nanobars. Spectra taken in saturated and disordered states exhibit a series of resonances with characteristic in-plane angular dependencies. Micromagnetic simulations allow us to interpret characteristic resonances of a two-step magnetization reversal of the nanomagnets. The dynamic properties are consistent with topological defects that are provoked via a magnetic field applied at specific angles. Simulations that we performed on previously investigated kagome artif…
The magneto-transport and magnetization measurements of Sb1.90Cu0.10Te3 were performed at different temperatures and different fields. Magneto-transport measurement at high field indicates the coexistence of both bulk and surface states. The magnetization shows the induced antiferromagnetic ordering with Cu doping and the observed quantum oscillation in it indicates that magnetization in Sb1.90Cu0.10Te3 is the bulk property. The non linearity in Hall data suggests the existence of anomalous and topological Hall effect. The anomalous and topological Hall effect (THE) from measured hall data of …
We report broadband spin-wave spectroscopy on kagome artificial spin ice (ASI) made of large arrays of interconnected Ni$_{80}$Fe$_{20}$ nanobars. Spectra taken in saturated and disordered states exhibit a series of resonances with characteristic magnetic field dependencies. Making use of micromagnetic simulations, we identify resonances that reflect the spin-solid-state and monopole-antimonopole pairs on Dirac strings. The latter resonances allow for the generation of highly-charged vertices in ASIs via microwave assisted switching. Our findings open further perspectives for fundamental studi…
We calculate the magnetization of the helical metallic surface states of a topological insulator. We account for the presence of a small sub-dominant Schr{ö}dinger piece in the Hamiltonian in addition to the dominant Dirac contribution. This breaks particle-hole symmetry. The cross-section of the upper Dirac cone narrows while that of the lower cone broadens. The sawtooth pattern seen in the magnetization of the pure Dirac limit as a function of chemical potential ($μ$) is shifted; but, the quantization of the Hall plateaus remains half integral. This is verified by taking the derivative of th…
We study a topological phase diagram of a ferromagnetic topological nodal semimetal. We consider a lattice model for three-dimensional topological insulators with ferromagnetic ordering. The exchange coupling between the magnetization and the electron spin leads to the nodal band structure. The topology of the nodal band structure depends on the direction of the magnetization and both the Weyl points and the nodal line emerge. We find that the nodal line structure is stable under an easy-plane magnetization in appropriate model parameters. In this case, the nodal line phase emerges as a phase …
Among the potential applications of topological insulators, we investigate theoretically the effect of coexistence of proximity-induced ferromagnetism and superconductivity on the surface states of 3-dimensional topological insulator, where the superconducting electron-hole excitations can be significantly affected by the magnetization of ferromagnetic order. We find that, Majorana mode energy, as a verified feature of TI F/S structure, along the interface sensitively depends on the magnitude of magnetization $m_{zfs}$ in FS region, while its slope in perpendicular incidence presents steep and…
We investigate the magnetization dynamics that arise when a thin-film ferromagnet is deposited on a topological insulator (TI), focusing in particular on domain-wall motion via current and the possibility of a spin-wave torque acting on the magnetization. We show analytically that the coupling between the magnetic domain wall and the TI removes the degeneracy of the wall profile with respect to its chirality and topological charge. Moreover, we find that the threshold for Walker breakdown of domain wall motion is substantially increased and determined by the interaction with the TI, allowing f…
We propose magnetic second-order topological insulators (SOTIs). First, we study a three-dimensional model. It is pointed out that the previously proposed topological hinge insulator has actually surface states along the [001] direction in addition to hinge states. We gap out these surface states by introducing magnetization, obtaining a SOTI only with hinge states. The bulk topological number is the $Z_2$ index protected by the combined symmetry of the four-fold rotation and the inversion symmetry. We next study two dimensional magnetic SOTIs, where the corner states are robust also in the pr…
Using the Green functions method we study transport properties of surface electrons in topological insulators in the presence of a correlated random exchange field. Such an exchange field may be due to random magnetization with correlated fluctuations. We determine the relaxation time due to scattering from the magnetization fluctuations and from other structural defects. Then we calculate the longitudinal charge conductivity taking into account the contribution due to vertex correction.
The magnetoelectric effect predicted in topological insulators makes heterostructures that combine magnetic materials and such insulators promising candidates for spintronics applications. Here, we theoretically consider a setup that exhibits two well-separated interfaces between a topological insulator and a ferromagnetic insulator. We show that there is a topological magnetic dipole-dipole interaction stemming from long-range Coulomb interactions. We analytically derive the magnetization dynamics at the two interfaces and discuss how the long-range coupling can be applied to non-locally indu…
Strong nonmagnetic impurities on the surface of three-dimensional topological insulators (TIs) generate localized resonance peaks close to the Dirac point. We show that this results in a strongly reduced critical Coulomb interaction strength to reach a magnetic surface state, following a Stoner-like criterion. Thus even weakly interacting TIs host a finite (local) magnetization around strong nonmagnetic impurities. The local magnetization gives rise to a global energy gap, linearly dependent on the maximum value of the magnetization but decreasing with reduced impurity concentration.
The phenomenological theory for "topological" Hall effect (THE) is proposed. The theory can be used for qualitative analysis of THE in the medium with arbitrary magnetization distribution. In the paper the cylindrical particle with "vortex" magnetization is considered. The hysteresis loop of THE is qualitatively different comparing to abnormal Hall effect. The estimation of THE magnitude in the "vortex" particle is made. For Co particle with 100 nm diameter the THE exceeds normal and abnormal Hall effects until an external magnetic field less than 200 Oe.
The interface between a topological insulator and a ferromagnetic insulator exhibits an interesting interplay of topological Dirac electrons and magnetism. As has been shown recently, the breaking of time-reversal invariance by magnetic order generates a Chern-Simons term in the action, that in turn leads to a Berry phase and a magnetoelectric effect of topological origin. Here, we consider the system in the presence of long-range Coulomb interaction between the Dirac electrons, and find that the magnetoelectric effect of the fluctuating electric field becomes non-local. We derive a Landau-Lif…
We address the nature of spin-orbit torques at the magnetic surfaces of topological insulators, using both Kubo formula and Keldysh formalism. Through the analysis of the derived spin-charge equations, we find that the so-called Dirac torques possess a different symmetry compared to their Rashba counterpart, as well as a high anisotropy as a function of the magnetization direction. In particular, the damping torque vanishes when the magnetization lies in the plane of the topological insulator surface. This peculiarity has important consequences in terms of magnetization dynamics and switching,…
We investigate theoretically the spin torque and magnetization dynamic in a thin ferromagnetic (FM) layer with spatially varying magnetization. The FM layer is deposited on the surface of a topological insulator (TI). In the limit of the adiabatic relaxation of electron spin along the magnetization, the interaction between the exchange interaction and the Rashba-like surface texture of a TI yields a topological gauge field. Under the gauge field and an applied current, spin torque is induced according to the direction of the current. We derived the corresponding effective anisotropy field and …
We demonstrate that in Weyl semimetals, the momentum-space helical spin texture can couple to the chirality of the Weyl node to generate a frequency-independent magnetization in response to circularly polarized light through the inverse Faraday effect. This frequency-independence is rooted in the topology of the Weyl node. Since the helicity and the chirality are always locked for Weyl nodes, this effect is not subject to any symmetry constraint. Finally, we show that the photoinduced frequency-independent magnetization is robust against lattice effect and has a magnitude large enough to reali…
The magnetization reversal process in thin-film ferromagnetic elements with surface anisotropy of various shapes and sizes is investigated by means of numerical simulation. The dependence of the perpendicular and in-plane hysteresis loops on the element thickness and the value of the surface anisotropy constant is obtained. For sufficiently large values of the surface anisotropy constant the magnetization reversal of thin-film elements is shown to occur due to the nucleation of the buckling mode. For an elongated rectangular element the nucleation field of the buckling mode is proportional to …
We report a continuous phase transition between quantum-anomalous-Hall and trivial-insulator phases in a magnetic topological insulator upon magnetization rotation. The Hall conductivity transits from one plateau of quantized Hall conductivity $e^2/h$ to the other plateau of zero Hall conductivity. The transition curves taken at various temperatures cross almost at a single point, exemplifying the critical behavior of the transition. The slope of the transition curves follows a power-law temperature dependence with a critical exponent of $-0.61$. This suggests a common underlying origin in the…
A general expression for the orbital magnetization of a Floquet system is derived. The expression holds for a clean system, and is valid for any driving protocol, and arbitrary occupation of the bands. The orbital magnetization is shown to be large not only for Chern insulators, but also for anomalous phases where the Chern number does not fully account for the topology. In addition, the orbital magnetization is shown to take significant values both for a thermal equilibrium occupation of the Floquet bands, and for occupations determined by a quantum quench from an initial state with zero orbi…
Strong dependence of the Josephson energy on the magnetization orientation in Josephson junctions with ferromagnetic interlayers and spin-orbit coupling opens a way to control magnetization by Josephson current or Josephson phase. Here we investigate the perspectives of magnetization control in superconductor/ferromagnet/superconductor (S/F/S) Josephson junctions on the surface of a 3D topological insulator hosting Dirac quasiparticles. Due to the spin-momentum locking of these Dirac quasiparticles a strong dependence of the Josephson current-phase relation on the magnetization orientation is …
Under suitable conditions, some twisted graphene multilayers and transition-metal dichalcogenides become Chern insulators, exhibiting the anomalous quantum Hall effect and orbital magnetization due to spontaneous valley polarization. We study interaction of a Chern insulator with circularly polarized light. The interaction energy contains an antisymmetric term that couples to the helicity of incident light. For a two-band Chern insulator, this term is expressed as an integral involving the Berry curvature of the system. Taking advantage of this interaction, we propose an experimental protocol …
We theoretically study the spin-orbit crossed susceptibility of topological Dirac semimetals. Because of strong spin-orbit coupling, the orbital motion of electrons is modulated by Zeeman coupling, which contributes to orbital magnetization. We find that the spin-orbit crossed susceptibility is proportional to the separation of the Dirac points and it is highly anisotropic. The orbital magnetization is induced only along the rotational symmetry axis. We also study the conventional spin susceptibility. The spin susceptibility exhibits anisotropy and the spin magnetization is induced only along …
The period of magnetization oscillations that occur near the surface of a nanotube or nanowire under the influence of surface magnetic anisotropy is determined by means of numerical simulation as a function of nanowire geometry and material parameters. The hopping mode is observed for stationary movement of a head-to-head domain wall along nanowire axis in applied magnetic field. The average speed of the domain wall in the hopping mode is found to be several times less than the stationary velocity of the wall in the absence of surface anisotropy.
Topological insulators (TIs) with spin momentum locked topological surface states (TSS) are expected to exhibit a giant spin-orbit torque (SOT) in the TI/ferromagnet systems. To date, the TI SOT driven magnetization switching is solely reported in a Cr doped TI at 1.9 K. Here, we directly show giant SOT driven magnetization switching in a Bi2Se3/NiFe heterostructure at room temperature captured using a magneto-optic Kerr effect microscope. We identify a large charge to spin conversion efficiency of ~1-1.75 in the thin TI films, where the TSS is dominant. In addition, we find the current densit…
Magnetic quantum oscillations (MQOs) have been widely used as a tool for probing Fermi surfaces. The shape and topology of the Fermi surface and the related physical parameters, such as the cyclotron mass and relaxation time, can be verified by carefully analyzing the frequency, amplitude, and phase of MQOs. In particular, phase analysis, from which we can obtain the Berry phase, has received much attention with the growing interest in the topology of condensed matter physics. Here, beyond the conventional uses of MQOs, we show that MQOs can be used to determine the Fermi surface magnetization…
An approach to the electrostatic control of $90^{\circ}$ magnetization rotation in the hybrid structures composed of topological insulators (TIs) and adjacent ferromagnetic insulators (FMI) is proposed and studied. The concept is based on TI electron energy variation with in-plane to put-of plane FMI magnetization turn. The calculations explicitly expose the effect of free energy variability in the form of the electrically controlled uniaxial magnetic anisotropy, which depends on proximate exchange interaction and TI surface electron density. Combining with inherent anisotropy, the magnetizati…
Spin-orbit torque (SOT) magnetization switching of ferromagnets with large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy has a great potential for the next-generation non-volatile magnetoresistive random-access memory (MRAM). It requires a high-performance pure spin current source with a large spin Hall angle and high electrical conductivity, which can be fabricated by a mass production technique. In this work, we demonstrate ultrahigh efficient and robust SOT magnetization switching in all-sputtered BiSb topological insulator - perpendicularly magnetized Co/Pt multilayers. Despite fabricated by the indus…
We show that the magnetic moment of a nanoparticle embedded in the surface of a solid can be switched by surface acoustic waves (SAW) in the GHz frequency range via a universal mechanism that does not depend on the structure of the particle and the structure of the substrate. It is based upon generation of the effective ac magnetic field in the coordinate frame of the nanoparticle by the shear deformation of the surface due to SAW. The magnetization reversal occurs via a consecutive absorption of surface phonons of the controlled variable frequency. We derive analytical equations governing thi…
Diameter-modulated nanowires offer an important paradigm to design the magnetization response of 3D magnetic nanostructures by engineering the domain wall pinning. With the aim to understand its nature and to control the process, we analyze the magnetization response in FeCo modulated polycrystalline two-segment nanowires varying the minor diameter. Our modelling indicates a very complex behavior with a strong dependence on the disorder distribution and an important role of topologically non-trivial magnetization structures. We demonstrate that modulated nanowires with a small diameter differe…
We theoretically investigate the phase of the de Haas - van Alphen oscillations in topological line-node semimetals. In these semimetals the chemical potential of charge carriers can essentially depend on the magnetic field, and this dependence changes the phase of the oscillations as compared to the phase in a three-dimensional metal with a band-contact line. Our results elucidate recent experimental data on the Berry phase for certain electron orbits in ZrSiS, ZrSiTe, and ZrSiSe.
Using an approximate expression for the Landau levels of the electrons located near a nodal line of a topological line-node semimetal, we obtain formulas for the magnetization of this semimetal at an arbitrary shape of its line. It is also shown that the dependence of the chemical potential on the magnetic field can be strong in these materials, and this dependence can essentially influence the de Haas - van Alphen oscillations. The obtained results are applied to the rhombohedral graphite which is one of the line-node semimetals. For this material, we find temperature and magnetic field depen…
We show that the magneto-electric coupling in 3D (strong) topological insulators is related to a second derivative of the bulk magnetization. The formula we derive is the non-linear response analog of the Streda formula for Hall conductivity (P. Streda, J. Phys. C: Solid State Physics, 15, 22 (1982)), which relates the Hall conductivity to the derivative of the magnetization with respect to chemical potential. Our finding allows one to extract the magneto-electric coefficient by measuring the magnetization, while varying the chemical potential and one more perturbing field. Such an experimenta…
The orbital magnetic moment of a finite piece of matter is expressed in terms of the one-body density matrix as a simple trace. We address a macroscopic system, insulating in the bulk, and we show that its orbital moment is the sum of a bulk term and a surface term, both extensive. The latter only occurs when the transverse conductivity is nonzero and owes to conducting surface states. Simulations on a model Hamiltonian validate our theory.
We study quantum oscillations of the magnetization in Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$(111) surface system in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. The combined spin-chiral Dirac cone and Landau quantization produce profound effects on the magnetization properties that are fundamentally different from those in the conventional semiconductor two-dimensional electron gas. In particular, we show that the oscillating center in the magnetization chooses to pick up positive or negative values depending on whether the zero-mode Landau level is occupied or empty. An intuitive analysis of these new features …
We show that a spontaneous strain and spontaneous magnetization can arise in the doped topological insulators with a two-component superconducting vector order parameter. The details of the effects crucially depend on the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter, whether it is nematic or chiral. The transition from the nematic state to the chiral one can be performed by application of a magnetic field while the transition from the chiral state to the nematic one is tuned by the external strain. These transitions associated with a jump of the magnetic susceptibility and mechanical stiffn…
Results are presented for Floquet systems in two spatial dimensions where the Floquet driving breaks an effective time reversal symmetry. The driving protocol also induces flat bands that correspond to anomalous Floquet phases where the Chern number is zero and yet chiral edge modes exist. Analytic expressions for the edge modes, Berry curvature, and the orbital magnetization are derived for the flat bands. Results are also presented for the static Haldane model for parameters when the bands are flat. Floquet driving of the same model is shown to give rise to Chern insulators as well as anomal…
Experimental investigation of the effect of topological insulator on the magnetization dynamics of ferromagnetic metal: $BiSbTe_{1.5}Se_{1.5}$ and $Ni_{80}Fe_{20}$ heterostructure
The interplay between band topology and magnetic order could generate a variety of time-reversal-breaking gapped topological phases with exotic topological quantization phenomena, such as quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulators and axion insulators (AxI). Here by combining analytic models and first-principles calculations, we predict QAH and AxI phases can be realized in thin film of an intrinsic antiferromagnetic van der Waal material Mn$_2$Bi$_2$Te$_5$. The phase transition between QAH and AxI is tuned by the layer magnetization, which would provide a promising platform for chiral supercondu…
We study the spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) in Pt grown $\textit{in situ}$ on CoFe$_2$O$_4$ (CFO) ferrimagnetic insulating (FMI) films. A careful analysis of the angle-dependent and field-dependent longitudinal magnetoresistance indicates that the SMR contains a contribution that does not follow the bulk magnetization of CFO but it is a fingerprint of the complex magnetism at the surface of the CFO layer, thus signaling SMR as a tool for mapping surface magnetization. A systematic study of the SMR for different temperatures and CFO thicknesses gives us information impossible to obtain with …
We study theoretically a chain of precessing classical magnetic impurities in an $s$-wave superconductor. Utilizing a rotating wave description, we derive an effective Hamiltonian that describes the emergent Shiba band. We find that this Hamiltonian shows non-trivial topological properties, and we obtain the corresponding topological phase diagrams both numerically and analytically. We show that changing the precession frequency offers a control over topological phase transitions and the emergence of Majorana bound states. We propose driving the magnetic impurities or magnetic texture into pre…
We propose a multiterminal nanostructure for electrical probing of the quantum spin Hall effect (QSHE) in two-dimensional (2D) topological insulators. The device consists of a ferromagnetic (FM) island with precessing magnetization that pumps (in the absence of any bias voltage) pure spin current symmetrically into the left and right adjacent 2D TIs modeled as graphene nanoribbons with the intrinsic spin-orbit (SO) coupling. The QSH regime of the six-terminal TI|FM|TI nanodevice, attached to two longitudinal and four transverse normal metal electrodes, is characterized by the SO-coupling-induc…
The anomalous Hall effect is caused by magnetic textures such as skyrmions. We derive an analytical formula of the Hall conductivity on the surface of a topological insulator up to third order in magnetization, $\boldsymbol{M}(\boldsymbol{x})$, based on a perturbative approach. We identify the magnetic textures that contribute to the Hall conductivity up to third order in magnetization and second order in spatial differentiation. We treat magnetization as a perturbation to calculate the Hall conductivity for each magnetic texture based on the linear response theory. Furthermore, we estimate th…
We uncover a new family of few-body topological phases in periodically driven fermionic systems in two dimensions. These phases, which we term correlation-induced anomalous Floquet insulators (CIAFIs), are characterized by quantized contributions to the bulk magnetization from multi-particle correlations, and are classified by a family of integer-valued topological invariants. The CIAFI phases do not require many-body localization, but arise in the generic situation of k-particle localization, where the system is localized (due to disorder) for any finite number of particles up to a maximum nu…
