The interplay between band topology and magnetic order could generate a variety of time-reversal-breaking gapped topological phases with exotic topological quantization phenomena, such as quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulators and axion insulators (AxI). Here by combining analytic models and first-principles calculations, we predict QAH and AxI phases can be realized in thin film of an intrinsic antiferromagnetic van der Waal material Mn$_2$Bi$_2$Te$_5$. The phase transition between QAH and AxI is tuned by the layer magnetization, which would provide a promising platform for chiral superconducting phases. We further present a simple and unified continuum model that captures the magnetic topological features, and is generic for Mn$_2$Bi$_2$Te$_5$ and MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ family materials.
The anomalous Hall effect is investigated experimentally and theoretically for ferromagnetic thin films of Mn$_5$Ge$_3$. We have separated the intrinsic and extrinsic contributions to the experimental anomalous Hall effect, and calculated the intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity from the Berry curvature of the Bloch states using first-principles methods. The intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity depends linearly on the magnetization, which can be understood from the long wavelength fluctuations of the spin orientation at finite temperatures. The quantitative agreement between theory and exper…
Recently, the intrinsic magnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4 has attracted enormous research interest due to the great success in realizing exotic topological quantum states, such as the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE), axion insulator state, high-Chern-number and high-temperature Chern insulator states. One key issue in this field is to effectively manipulate these states and control topological phase transitions. Here, by systematic angle-dependent transport measurements, we reveal a magnetization-tuned topological quantum phase transition from Chern insulator to magnetic insulator w…
Antiferromagnets (AFMs) exhibit intrinsic magnetization when the order parameter spatially varies. This intrinsic spin is present even at equilibrium and can be interpreted as a twisting of the homogeneous AFM into a state with a finite spin. Because magnetic moments couple directly to external magnetic fields, the intrinsic magnetization can alter the dynamics of antiferromagnetic textures under such influence. Starting from the discrete Heisenberg model, we derive the continuum limit of the free energy of AFMs in the exchange approximation and explicitly rederive that the spatial variation o…
The establishment of chiral coupling in thin magnetic films with inhomogeneous anisotropy has led to the development of artificial systems of fundamental and technological interest. The chiral coupling itself is enabled by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) enforced by the patterned noncollinear magnetization. Here, we create a domain wall track with out-of-plane magnetization coupled on each side to a narrow parallel strip with in-plane magnetization. With this we show that the chiral torques emerging from the DMI at the boundary between the regions of noncollinear magnetization in a…
We reveal the unexpected role of the material inhomogeneity in unifying the formulation of intrinsic thermal and thermoelectric transport as well as magnetization currents. The smooth inhomogeneity leads to the position dependent local band dispersion and phase-space Berry curvature, enabling a general and rapid access to transport and magnetization currents displaying the momentum-space Berry curvature physics. Our theory does not invoke the boundary current, the thermodynamic approach to magnetization or any mechanical counterpart of statistical forces. By introducing a fictitious inhomogene…

Magnetization dynamics are strongly influenced by damping. An effective damping constant αeff is often determined experimentally from the spectral linewidth of the free induction decay of the magnetization after the system is excited to its non-equilibrium state. Such an αeff, however, reflects both intrinsic damping as well as inhomogeneous broadening. In this paper we compare measurements of the magnetization dynamics in ultrathin non-epitaxial films having perpendicular magnetic anisotropy using two different techniques, time-resolved magneto optical Kerr effect (TRMOKE) and hybrid optical-…
By performing first principles calculations we investigate the intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) and its anisotropy in ordered L1o FePt, CoPt and NiPt ferromagnets, and their intermediate alloys. We demonstrate that the AHC in this family of compounds depends strongly on the direction of the magnetization in the crystal. We predict that such pronounced orientational dependence in combination with the general decreasing trend of the AHC when going from FePt to NiPt leads to a sign change of the AHC upon rotating the magnetization direction in the crystal of CoPt alloy. We also suggest…
First principles calculations show that electric fields applied to ferromagnets generate spin currents flowing perpendicularly to the electric field. Reduced symmetry in these ferromagnets enables a wide variety of such spin currents. However, the total spin current is approximately the sum of a magnetization-independent spin Hall current and an anisotropic spin anomalous Hall current. Intrinsic spin currents are not subject to dephasing, enabling their spin polarizations to be misaligned with the magnetization, which enables the magnetization-independent spin Hall effect. The spin Hall conduc…
We study the intrinsic orbital magnetization (OM) in antiferromagnets on the distorted face-centered-cubic lattice. The combined lattice distortion and spin frustration induce nontrivial $k$-space Chern invariant, which turns to result in profound effects on the OM properties. We derive a specific relation between the OM and the Hall conductivity, according to which it is found that the intrinsic OM vanishes when the electron chemical potential lies in the Mott gap. The distinct behavior of the intrinsic OM in the metallic and insulating regions is shown. The Berry phase effects on the thermoe…
A semiclassical theory for the orbital magnetization due to adiabatic evolutions of Bloch electronic states is proposed. It renders a unified theory for the periodic-evolution pumped orbital magnetization and the orbital magnetoelectric response in insulators by revealing that these two phenomena are the only instances where the induced magnetization is gauge invariant. This theory also accounts for the electric-field induced intrinsic orbital magnetization in two-dimensional metals and Chern insulators. We illustrate the orbital magnetization pumped by microscopic local rotations of atoms, wh…
We propose an orbital magnetothermal effect wherein a temperature gradient generates an orbital magnetization (OM) for Bloch electrons, and we present a unified theory for electrically and thermally induced OM, valid for both metals and insulators. We reveal that there exists an intrinsic response of OM, for which the susceptibilities are completely determined by the band geometric quantities such as interband Berry connections, interband orbital moments, and the quantum metric. The theory can be readily combined with first-principles calculations to study real materials. As an example, we cal…
We theoretically demonstrate that 100\% valley-polarized transport in monolayers of MoS$_{2}$ and other group-VI dichalcogenides can be obtained using off-resonant circularly polarized light. By tuning the intensity of the off-resonant light the intrinsic band gap in one valley is reduced, while it is enhanced in the other valley, enabling single valley quantum transport. As a consequence, we predict (i) enhancement of the longitudinal electrical conductivity, accompanied by an increase in the spin-polarization of the flowing electrons, (ii) enhancement of the intrinsic spin Hall effect, toget…
We use scanning optical magnetometry to study the broadband frequency spectra of spontaneous magnetization fluctuations, or "magnetization noise", in an archetypal ferromagnetic film that can be smoothly tuned through a spin reorientation transition (SRT). The SRT is achieved by laterally varying the magnetic anisotropy across an ultrathin Pt/Co/Pt trilayer, from the perpendicular to in-plane direction, via graded Ar$^+$ irradiation. In regions exhibiting perpendicular anisotropy, the power spectrum of the magnetization noise, $S(ν)$, exhibits a remarkably robust $ν^{-3/2}$ power law over freq…
Gate tunable two-dimensional (2D) superconductors offer significant advantages when studying superconducting phase transitions. Here, we address superconductivity in exfoliated 1T'-MoTe2 monolayers with an intrinsic band gap of ~7.3 meV using electrostatic doping. Despite large differences in the dispersion of the conduction and the valence bands, superconductivity can be achieved easily for both electrons and holes. The onset of superconductivity occurs near 7-8K for both charge carrier types. This temperature is much higher than in bulk samples. Also the in-plane upper critical field is stro…
Media with engineered magnetization are essential building blocks in superconductivity, magnetism and magnon spintronics. However, the established thin-film and lithographic techniques insufficiently suit the realization of planar components with on-demand-tailored magnetization in the lateral dimension. Here, we demonstrate the engineering of the magnetic properties of CoFe-based nanodisks fabricated by the mask-less technique of focused electron beam induced deposition (FEBID). The material composition in the nanodisks is tuned \emph{in-situ} via the e-beam waiting time in the FEBID process …
Micron-sized Hall bars and micro-SQUIDs are now used routinely to measure the local static and dynamic magnetic response with micron-scale spatial resolution. While this provides a powerful new tool, determining the intrinsic magnetization presents new challenges, as it requires correcting for demagnetization fields that vary widely with position on a sample. In this paper we develop a method to correct for the demagnetization effect at local points of a rectangular prism shaped sample using a finite element analysis of Maxwell's equation applied to local Hall sensor measurements calibrated by…
We theoretically study the antiferromagnetic domain wall motion actuated by an inhomogeneous external magnetic field. The Lagrangian and the equations of motion of antiferromagnetic spins under an inhomogeneous magnetic field are derived, first in terms of the Néel vector, and then using collective coordinates of the domain wall. A solution is found that describes the actuation of a domain wall by an inhomogeneous field, in which the motion is initiated by a paramagnetic response of wall magnetization, which is then driven by a Stern-Gerlach like force. The effects of pinning potential are als…
Recent advances on the stabilization and manipulation of chiral magnetization configurations in systems consisting in alternating atomic layers of ferromagnetic and non-magnetic materials hold promise of innovation in spintronics technology. The low dimensionality of the systems promotes spin orbit driven interfacial effects like antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMI) and surface magnetic anisotropy, whose relative strengths may be tuned to achieve stable nanometer sized magnetic objects with fixed chirality. While in most of the cases this is obtained by engineering complex mu…
We study the interplay between the effects of surface anisotropy and dipolar interactions in monodisperse assemblies of nanomagnets with oriented anisotropy. We derive asymptotic formulas for the assembly magnetization taking account of temperature, applied field, core and surface anisotropy, and dipolar inter-particle interactions. We find that the interplay between surface anisotropy and dipolar interactions is well described by the analytical expression of the assembly magnetization derived here: the overall sign of the product of the two parameters governing the surface and the dipolar con…
We have studied magnetization of graphene nanocrystals obtained by sonic exfoliation of graphite. No ferromagnetism is detected at any temperature down to 2 K. Neither do we find strong paramagnetism expected due to the massive amount of edge defects. Rather, graphene is strongly diamagnetic, similar to graphite. Our nanocrystals exhibit only a weak paramagnetic contribution noticeable below 50K. The measurements yield a single species of defects responsible for the paramagnetism, with approximately one magnetic moment per typical graphene crystallite.
The intrinsic orbital magnetization of a TMD monolayer is usually calculated for a plane unbounded system without mentioning the geometrical shape of samples and boundary conditions (BCs) for electron wave functions. The method of calculations includes allowing for the Berry curvature contribution also in the case when the system is described by the two-band minimal model [9]. In the present paper, we show that the geometrical and topological properties of the specimen, as well as the BCs, play an important role in the problem of magnetization even for a macroscopic specimen.
We propose an intrinsic nonlinear spin magnetoelectric effect in magnetic materials, offering the potential of all-electric control of spin degree of freedom in centrosymmetric magnets, which reside outside of the current paradigm based on linear spin response. We reveal the band geometric origin of this effect in the momentum and magnetization space Berry connection polarizabilities, and clarify its symmetry characters. As an intrinsic effect, it is determined solely by the material's band structure and represents a material characteristic. Combining our theory with first-principles calculati…
We show that a spontaneous strain and spontaneous magnetization can arise in the doped topological insulators with a two-component superconducting vector order parameter. The details of the effects crucially depend on the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter, whether it is nematic or chiral. The transition from the nematic state to the chiral one can be performed by application of a magnetic field while the transition from the chiral state to the nematic one is tuned by the external strain. These transitions associated with a jump of the magnetic susceptibility and mechanical stiffn…
When electron spins are injected uniformly into a paramagnetic disc, they can precess along the demagnetizing field induced by the resulting magnetic moment. Normally this precession damps out by virtue of the spin relaxation which is present in paramagnetic materials. We propose a new mechanism to excite a steady-state form of this dynamics by injecting a constant spin current into this paramagnetic disc. We show that the rotating magnetic field generated by the eddy currents provide a torque which makes this possible. Unlike the ferromagnetic equivalent, the spin-torque-oscillator, the oscil…
A Datta-Das spin field-effect transistor is built of a heterostructure with a Rashba spin-orbit interaction (SOI) at the interface (or quantum well) separating two possibly magnetized reservoirs. The particle and spin currents between the two reservoirs are driven by chemical potentials that are (possibly) different for each spin direction. These currents are also tuned by varying the strength of the SOI, which changes the amount of the rotation of the spins of electrons crossing the heterostructure. Here we investigate the dependence of these currents on additional Zeeman fields on the hetero…
We consider a Josephson junction with ${\rm F_1 F_2 F_3}$ ferromagnetic trilayers in the ballistic regime, where the magnetization in each ferromagnet ${\rm F}_i (i=1,2,3)$, can have arbitrary orientations and magnetization strengths. The trilayers are sandwiched between two $s$-wave superconductors with a macroscopic phase difference $Δφ$. A broad range of magnetization strengths of the central $\rm F_2$ layer are considered, from an unpolarized normal metal (N) to a half-metallic phase, supporting only one spin species. Our results reveal that when the magnetization configuration in ${\rm F_…
In the absence of dissipation a non-rotating magnetic nanoparticle can be stably levitated in a static magnetic field as a consequence of the spin origin of its magnetization. Here we study the effects of dissipation on the stability of the system, considering the interaction with the background gas and the intrinsic Gilbert damping of magnetization dynamics. At large applied magnetic fields we identify magnetization switching induced by Gilbert damping as the key limiting factor for stable levitation. At low applied magnetic fields and for small particle dimensions magnetization switching is …
We discuss the effects of thermal noise on the magnetic response of a lateral ferromagnetic Josephson junction with spin-orbit coupling and out-of-plane magnetization. The direction of the magnetic moment in the ferromagnetic layer can be inverted by using controlled current pulses. This phenomenon is due to the magnetoelectric effect that couples the flowing charge current and the magnetization of the ferromagnet. We investigate the magnetization reversal effect versus intrinsic parameters of the ferromagnet, such as the Gilbert damping and strength of the spin-orbit coupling. We estimate the…
In this letter, we have studied the spin torque based magnetization oscillations and switching in presence of Rashba - Zeeman (RZ), Ruderman - Kittel - Kasuya - Yoside (RKKY) and Dzyaloshinskii - Moriya (DM) interactions in a double barrier RZ$|$Heavy Metal (HM)$|$RZ magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ). The system has stable magnetization oscillations and can work as an oscillator or a switcher for a significant difference in the strength of RKKY and DM interaction under suitable spin transfer torque (STT). For the proposed system with same order of RKKY and DM interaction, a nonlinear characterist…
There is renewed interest in rare-earth elements and gadolinium in particular for a range of studies in coupling physics and applications. However, it is still apparent that synthesis impacts understanding of the intrinsic magnetic properties of thin gadolinium films, particularly for thicknesses of topicality. We report studies on 50nm thick nanogranular polycrystalline gadolinium thin films on SiO2 wafers that demonstrate single-crystal like behavior. The maximum in-plane saturation magnetization at 4K was found to be 4πMS4K = (2.61{\pm}0.26)T with a coercivity of HC4K = (160{\pm}5)Oe. A max…
Interaction between local magnetization and conduction electrons is responsible for a variety of phenomena in magnetic materials. We have shown that the spin-dependent motive force induced by magnetization dynamics in a conducting ferromagnet lead to the spin Coulomb drag effect. The spin Coulomb drag an intrinsic friction mechanism which operates whenever the average velocities of up-spin and down-spin electrons differ.
Below 360 mK, Fe magnetic molecular clusters are in the pure quantum relaxation regime and we show that the predicted square-root time relaxation is obeyed, allowing us to develop a new method for watching the evolution of the distribution of molecular spin states in the sample. We measure as a function of applied field H the statistical distribution P(ξ_H) of magnetic energy bias ξ_H$ acting on the molecules. Tunneling initially causes rapid transitions of molecules, thereby digging a hole in P(ξ_H) (around the resonant condition ξ_H = 0). For small initial magnetization values, the hole widt…
The quantum oscillatory magnetization M of a two-dimensional electron system in a magnetic field B is found to provide quantitative information on both the Rashba- and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction (SOI). This is shown by first numerically solving the model Hamiltonian including the linear Rashba- and Dresselhaus SOI and the Zeeman term in an in particular doubly tilted magnetic field and second evaluating the intrinsically anisotropic magnetization for different directions of the in-plane magnetic field component. The amplitude of specific magnetic quantum oscillations in M(B) is found t…
Spin-dependent electronic transport through a quantum dot has been analyzed theoretically in the cotunneling regime by means of the second-order perturbation theory. The system is described by the impurity Anderson Hamiltonian with arbitrary Coulomb correlation parameter $U$. It is assumed that the dot level is intrinsically spin-split due to an effective molecular field exerted by a magnetic substrate. The dot is coupled to two ferromagnetic leads whose magnetic moments are noncollinear. The angular dependence of electric current, tunnel magnetoresistance, and differential conductance are pre…
We predict a magnetoresistance induced by the interfacial Rashba spin-orbit coupling in normal metal|ferromagnetic insulator bilayer. It depends on the angle between current and magnetization directions identically to the "spin Hall magnetoresistance" mechanism caused by a combined action of spin Hall and inverse spin Hall effects. Due to the identical phenomenology it is not obvious whether the magnetoresistance reported by Nakayama et al. is a bulk metal or interface effect. The interfacial Rashba induced magnetoresistance may be distinguished from the bulk metal spin Hall magnetoresistance …
The dynamics of the magnetization of the free layer in a spin-torque nano oscillator (STNO) influenced by a noncollinear alignment between the magnetizations of the free and pinned layers due to an interlayer exchange coupling has been investigated theoretically. The orientations of the magnetization of the free layer with that of the pinned layer have been computed through the macrospin model and they are found to match well with experimental results. The bilinear and biquadratic coupling strengths make the current to switch the magnetization between two states or oscillate steadily. The expr…
The interplay between intrinsic and surface/interface-induced magnetic anisotropies strongly in- fluences magnetization processes in nanomagnetic systems. We develop a micromagnetic theory to describe the field-driven reorientation in nanomagnets with cubic and uniaxial anisotropies. Spin configurations in competing phases and parameters of accompanying multidomain states are calculated as functions of the applied field and the magnetic anisotropies. The constructed magnetic phase diagrams allow to classify different types of the magnetization reversal and to provide detailed analysis of the s…
The modern theory of orbital magnetization (OM) was developed by using Wannier function method, which has a formalism similar with the Berry phase. In this manuscript, we perform a numerical study on the fate of the OM under disorder, by using this method on the Haldane model in two dimensions, which can be tuned between a normal insulator or a Chern insulator at half filling. The effects of increasing disorder on OM for both cases are simulated. Energy renormalization shifts are observed in the weak disorder regime and topologically trivial case, which was predicted by a self-consistent T-mat…
