In this note, we describe a method for reconstructing matrix product states from a small number of efficiently-implementable measurements. Our method is exponentially faster than standard tomography, and it can also be used to certify that the unknown state is an MPS. The basic idea is to use local unitary operations to measure in the Schmidt basis, giving direct access to the MPS representation. This compares favorably with recently and independently proposed methods that recover the MPS tensors by performing a variational minimization, which is computationally intractable in certain cases. Our method also has the advantage of recovering any MPS, while other approaches were limited to special classes of states that exclude important examples such as GHZ and W states.
State tomography on qubit pairs is routinely carried out by measuring the two qubits separately, while one expects a higher efficiency from tomography with highly symmetric joint measurements of both qubits. Our numerical study of simulated experiments does not support such expectations.
A review of the symplectic tomographic approaches within the framework of star-product quantization is presented. The classical statistical mechanics within the framework of the tomographic representation is considered. The kernels of star-product of functions - symbols of operators in classical and quantum mechanics are presented.
Invertible maps from operators of quantum obvservables onto functions of c-number arguments and their associative products are first assessed. Different types of maps like Weyl-Wigner-Stratonovich map and s-ordered quasidistribution are discussed. The recently introduced symplectic tomography map of observables (tomograms) related to the Heisenberg-Weyl group is shown to belong to the standard framework of the maps from quantum observables onto the c-number functions. The star-product for symbols of the quantum-observable for each one of the maps (including the tomographic map) and explicit re…
Using the irreducible tensor-operator technique, we establish the relation between different forms of spin tomograms. Quantizer and dequantizer operators are presented in simple explicit forms and are specified for the low-spin states. The kernel of the star-product is evaluated for qubits and qutrits and its connection with a generic formula is found.
We consider quadratic tomography in star product formalism. The contraction and the behavior of the associative algebra of quadratic tomographic symbols in $\hbar\rightarrow 0$ limit are discussed. A simple $k$-deformation example is illustrated.
We introduce random matrix theory to study the tomographic efficiency of a wide class of measurements constructed out of weighted 2-designs, including symmetric informationally complete (SIC) probability operator measurements (POMs). In particular, we derive analytic formulae for the mean Hilbert-Schmidt distance and the mean trace distance between the estimator and the true state, which clearly show the difference between the scaling behaviors of the two error measures with the dimension of the Hilbert space. We then prove that the product SIC POMs---the multipartite analogue of the SIC POMs-…
We compare direct state measurement (DST or weak state tomography) to conventional state reconstruction (tomography) through accurate Monte-Carlo simulations. We show that DST is surprisingly robust to its inherent bias. We propose a method to estimate such bias (which introduces an unavoidable error in the reconstruction) from the experimental data. As expected we find that DST is much less precise than tomography. We consider both finite and infinite-dimensional states of the DST pointer, showing that they provide comparable reconstructions.
We show that reformulating the Direct State Tomography (DST) protocol in terms of projections into a set of non-orthogonal bases one can perform an accuracy analysis of DST in a similar way as in the standard projection-based reconstruction schemes. i.e. in terms of the Hilbert-Schmidt distance between estimated and true states. This allows us to determine the estimation error for any measurement strength, including the weak measurement case, and to obtain an explicit analytic form for the average minimum square errors.
As the method to completely characterize quantum dynamical processes, quantum process tomography (QPT) is vitally important for quantum information processing and quantum control, where the faithfulness of quantum devices plays an essential role. Here via weak measurements, we present a new QPT scheme characterized by its directness and parallelism. Comparing with the existing schemes, our scheme needs a simpler state preparation and much fewer experimental setups. Furthermore, each parameter of the quantum process is directly determined from only five experimental values in our scheme, meanin…
Mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) are considered within the framework of a generic star-product scheme. We rederive that a full set of MUBs is adequate for a spin tomography, i.e. knowledge of all probabilities to find a system in each MUB-state is enough for a state reconstruction. Extending the ideas of the tomographic-probability representation and the star-product scheme to MUB-tomography, dequantizer and quantizer operators for MUB-symbols of spin states and operators are introduced, ordinary and dual star-product kernels are found. Since MUB-projectors are to obey specific rules of the star…
Compared with the conventional quantum state tomography (QST), the direct state tomography (DST) using weak value is easily manipulated in experiments. However, the efficiency of the DST is lower than that of the conventional QST, especially for high-dimensional systems. For a pure state, the DST is revised to improve the efficiency. In the revised DST, the real or imaginary parts of the weak values can be obtained by measuring only one system observable. We constructed a hybrid DST by combining the original DST and the revised DST. By using the appropriate measurement strength, the efficiency…
In contrast to the standard quantum state tomography, the direct tomography seeks the direct access to the complex values of the wave function at particular positions (i.e., the expansion coefficient in a fixed basis). Originally put forward as a special case of weak measurement, it can be extended to arbitrary measurement setup. We generalize the idea of "quantum metrology," where a real-valued phase is estimated, to the estimation of complex-valued phase, and apply it for the direct tomography of the wave function. It turns out that the reformulation can help us easily find the optimal measu…

Reconstructing the full quantum state of a many-body system requires the estimation of a number of parameters that grows exponentially with system size. Nevertheless, there are situations in which one is only interested in a subset of these parameters and a full reconstruction is not needed. A paradigmatic example is a scenario where one aims at determining all the reduced states only up to a given size. Overlapping tomography provides constructions to address this problem with a number of product measurements much smaller than what is obtained when performing independent tomography of each re…
Quantum state tomography is a key technique for quantum information processing, but is challenging due to the exponential growth of its complexity with the system size. In this work, we propose an algorithm which iteratively finds the best non-negative matrix product state approximation based on a set of measurement outcomes whose size does not necessarily grow exponentially. Compared to the tomography method based on neural network states, our scheme utilizes a so-called tensor train representation that allows straightforward recovery of the unknown density matrix in the matrix product state …
We argue that the claimed optimality of a new process tomography method suggested in [quant-ph/0601033] and [quant-ph/0601034] is based on not completely fair comparison that does not take into account the available information in an equal way. We also argue that the method is not a new process tomography scheme, but rather represents an interesting modification of ancilla assisted process tomography method. In our opinion these modifications require deeper understanding and further investigation.
The scheme of photon-number tomography is discussed in the framework of star-product quantization. The connection of dual quantization scheme and observables is reviewed. The quantizer and dequantizer operators and kernels of star product of tomograms in photon-number tomography scheme and its dual one are presented in explicit form. The fidelity and state purity are discussed in photon{number tomographic scheme, and the expressions for fidelity and purity are obtained in the form of integral of the product of two photon-number tomograms with integral kernel which is presented in explicit form…
With the capability to find the best fit to arbitrarily complicated data patterns, machine-learning (ML) enhanced quantum state tomography (QST) has demonstrated its advantages in extracting complete information about the quantum states. Instead of using the reconstruction model in training a truncated density matrix, we develop a high-performance, lightweight, and easy-to-install supervised characteristic model by generating the target parameters directly. Such a characteristic model-based ML-QST can avoid the problem of dealing with large Hilbert space, but keep feature extractions with high…
In recent years, a close connection between the description of open quantum systems, the input-output formalism of quantum optics, and continuous matrix product states in quantum field theory has been established. So far, however, this connection has not been extended to the condensed-matter context. In this work, we substantially develop further and apply a machinery of continuous matrix product states (cMPS) to perform tomography of transport experiments. We first present an extension of the tomographic possibilities of cMPS by showing that reconstruction schemes do not need to be based on l…
It has been recently shown that a state generated by a one-dimensional noisy quantum computer is well approximated by a matrix product operator with a finite bond dimension independent of the number of qubits. We show that full quantum state tomography can be performed for such a state with a minimal number of measurement settings using a method known as tensor train cross approximation. The method works for reconstructing full rank density matrices and only requires measuring local operators, which are routinely performed in state-of-art experimental quantum platforms. Our method requires exp…
In this paper we estimate the parameters of the qubit Pauli channel using the channel matrix formalism. The main novelty of this work is that we do not assume the directions of the Pauli channel to be known, but they are determined through the tomography process, too. The results show that for optimally estimating the contraction parameters and the channel matrix we should have input qubits and measurements in the channel directions. However, for optimally estimating the channel directions, we should use different tomography conditions.
Direct state tomography (DST) using weak measurements has received wide attention. Based on the concept of coupling-deformed pointer observables presented by Zhang \emph{et al}.[Phys. Rev. A \textbf{93}, 032128 (2016)], a modified direct state tomography (MDST) is proposed, examined, and compared with other typical state tomography schemes. MDST has exact validity for measurements of any strength. We identify the strength needed to attain the highest efficiency level of MDST by using statistical theory. MDST is much more efficient than DST in the sense that far fewer samples are needed to reac…
I propose an iterative expectation maximization algorithm for reconstructing a quantum optical ensemble from a set of balanced homodyne measurements performed on an optical state. The algorithm applies directly to the acquired data, bypassing the intermediate step of calculating marginal distributions. The advantages of the new method are made manifest by comparing it with the traditional inverse Radon transformation technique.
We show that the density matrix of a spin-l system can be described entirely in terms of the measurement statistics of projective spin measurements along a minimum of 4l+1 different spin directions. It is thus possible to represent the complete quantum statistics of any N-level system within the spherically symmetric three dimensional space defined by the spin vector. An explicit method for reconstructing the density matrix of a spin-1 system from the measurement statistics of five non-orthogonal spin directions is presented and the generalization to spin-l systems is discussed.
We show that the Fano representation leads to a particularly simple and appealing form of the quantum process tomography matrix $χ_{_F}$, in that the matrix $χ_{_F}$ is real, the number of matrix elements is exactly equal to the number of free parameters required for the complete characterization of a quantum operation, and these matrix elements are directly related to evolution of the expectation values of the system's polarization measurements. These facts are illustrated in the examples of one- and two-qubit quantum noise channels.
Direct state measurement (DSM) is a tomography method that allows for retrieving quantum states' wave functions directly. However, a shortcoming of current studies on the DSM is that it does not provide access to noisy quantum systems. Here, we attempt to fill the gap by investigating the DSM measurement precision that undergoes the state-preparation-and-measurement (SPAM) errors. We manipulate a quantum controlled measurement framework with various configurations and compare the efficiency between them. Under such SPAM errors, the state to be measured lightly deviates from the true state, and…
We present an efficient and robust method for the reconstruction of photon number distributions by using solely thermal noise as a probe. The method uses a minimal number of pre-calibrated quantum devices, only one on/off single-photon detector is sufficient. Feasibility of the method is demonstrated by the experimental inference of single-photon, thermal and two-photon states. The method is stable to experimental imperfections and provides a direct, user-friendly quantum diagnostics tool.
Quantum state tomography is the conventional method used to characterize density matrices for general quantum states. However, the data acquisition time generally scales linearly with the dimension of the Hilbert space, hindering the possibility of dynamic monitoring of a high-dimensional quantum system. Here, we demonstrate a direct tomography protocol to measure density matrices of photons in the position basis through the use of a polarization-resolving camera, where the dimension of density matrices can be as large as 580$\times$580 in our experiment. The use of the polarization-resolving …
We introduce the concept of quantum field tomography, the efficient and reliable reconstruction of unknown quantum fields based on data of correlation functions. At the basis of the analysis is the concept of continuous matrix product states, a complete set of variational states grasping states in quantum field theory. We innovate a practical method, making use of and developing tools in estimation theory used in the context of compressed sensing such as Prony methods and matrix pencils, allowing us to faithfully reconstruct quantum field states based on low-order correlation functions. In the…
The analysis of wave-packet dynamics may be greatly simplified when viewed in phase-space. While harmonic oscillators are often used as a convenient platform to study wave-packets, arbitrary state preparation in these systems is more challenging. Here, we demonstrate a direct measurement of the Wigner distribution of complex photon states in an anharmonic oscillator - a superconducting phase circuit, biased in the small anharmonicity regime. We test our method on both non-classical states composed of two energy eigenstates and on the dynamics of a phase-locked wavepacket. This method requires …

Let p_1, ..., p_N \in R^D be unknown vectors and let Omega \subseteq {1,...,N}^{\times 2}. Assume that the inner products p_i^T p_j are fixed for all (i,j) \in Omega. Do these inner product constraints (up to simultaneous rotation of all vectors) determine p_1, ..., p_N uniquely? Here we derive a necessary and sufficient condition for the uniqueness of p_1, ...,p_N (i.e., global completability) which is applicable to a large class of practically relevant sets Omega. Moreover, given Omega, we show that the condition for global completability is universal in the sense that for almost all vectors…
We implement direct readout of the symmetric characteristic function of quantum states of the motional oscillation of a trapped calcium ion. Using suitably chosen internal electronic state-dependent displacements based on bi-chromatic laser fields we map the expectation value of the real or imaginary part of the displacement operator to the internal states, which are subsequently read out using fluorescence detection. Combining the two readout results provides full information about the symmetric characteristic function. We characterize the performance of the technique by applying it to a rang…
