I propose an iterative expectation maximization algorithm for reconstructing a quantum optical ensemble from a set of balanced homodyne measurements performed on an optical state. The algorithm applies directly to the acquired data, bypassing the intermediate step of calculating marginal distributions. The advantages of the new method are made manifest by comparing it with the traditional inverse Radon transformation technique.
We show that data from homodyne-like detection based on photon-number-resolving (PNR) detectors may be effectively exploited to reconstruct quantum states of light using the tomographic reconstruction techniques originally developed for homodyne detection based on photodiodes. Our results open new perspectives to quantum state reconstruction, and pave the way to the use of PNR-based homodyne-like detectors in quantum information science.
I present a novel algorithm for reconstructing the Wigner function from homodyne statistics. The proposed method, based on maximum-likelihood estimation, is capable of compensating for detection losses in a numerically stable way.
An adaptive optimization technique to improve precision of quantum homodyne tomography is presented. The method is based on the existence of so-called null functions, which have zero average for arbitrary state of radiation. Addition of null functions to the tomographic kernels does not affect their mean values, but changes statistical errors, which can then be reduced by an optimization method that "adapts" kernels to homodyne data. Applications to tomography of the density matrix and other relevant field-observables are studied in detail.
An analysis of the homodyne tomography process that is often used to determine the Wigner functions of quantum optical states is performed to consider the effects of the spatiotemporal degrees of freedom. The homodyne tomography process removes those parts of the input state that are not associated with the mode of the local oscillator by tracing out those degrees of freedom. We provide optimized recursion relations for homodyne tomography. We improve previous methods by mitigating the divergences intrinsic in the calculation of the pattern functions used previously, and detail how to implement the data analysis through Monte Carlo simulations. Our refinements are necessary for the reconstruction of excited quantum states which populate a high-dimensional subspace of the electromagnetic field Hilbert space. We also present a Julia package for the analysis and the reconstruction method.
The effect of the detector electronic noise in an optical homodyne tomography experiment is shown to be equivalent to an optical loss if the detector is calibrated by measuring the quadrature noise of the vacuum state. An explicit relation between the electronic noise level and the equivalent optical efficiency is obtained and confirmed in an experiment with a narrowband squeezed vacuum source operating at an atomic rubidium wavelength.
A single photon, delocalized over two optical modes, is characterized by means of quantum homodyne tomography. The reconstructed four-dimensional density matrix extends over the entire Hilbert space and thus reveals, for the first time, complete information about the dual-rail optical quantum bit as a state of the electromagnetic field. The experimental data violate the Bell inequality albeit with a loophole similar to the detection loophole in photon counting experiments.
We derive various sampling functions for multimode homodyne tomography with a single local oscillator. These functions allow us to sample multimode s-parametrized quasidistributions, density matrix elements in Fock basis, and s-ordered moments of arbitrary order directly from the measured quadrature statistics. In this paper, we study how a displacement of a quantum system appears under a change of relativistic reference frame. We introduce a generic method in which a displacement operator in one reference frame can be transformed into another reference frame. It is found that, when moving between non-inertial reference frames there can be distortions of phase information, modal structure and amplitude. We analyse how these effects affect traditional homodyne detection techniques. We propose a general method for measuring an arbitrary observable of a multimode electromagnetic field using homodyne detection with a single local oscillator. In this method the local oscillator scans over all possible linear combinations of the modes. The case of two modes is analyzed in detail and the feasibility of the measurement is studied on the basis of Monte-Carlo simulations. We also provide an application of this method in tomographic testing of the GHZ state.
A self-homodyne detection scheme is proposed to perform two-mode tomography on a twin-beam state at the output of a nondegenerate optical parametric amplifier. This scheme has been devised to improve the matching between the local oscillator and the signal modes, which is the main limitation to the overall quantum efficiency in conventional homodyning. We present and demonstrate a method for optical homodyne tomography based on the inverse Radon transform. Different from the usual filtered back-projection algorithm, this method uses an appropriate polynomial series to expand the Wigner function and the marginal distribution and discretize Fourier space. We present a continuous-variable experimental analysis of a two-photon Fock state of free-propagating light. This state is obtained from a pulsed non-degenerate parametric amplifier, which produces two intensity-correlated twin beams. Counting two photons in one beam projects the other beam in the desired two-photon Fock state, which is analyzed by using a pulsed homodyne detection. The Wigner function of the measured state is clearly negative. We developed a detailed analytic model which allows a fast and efficient analysis of the experimental results.

Pulsed homodyne quantum tomography usually requires a high detection efficiency limiting its applicability in quantum optics. Here, it is shown that the presence of low detection efficiency ($<50\%$) does not prevent the tomographic reconstruction of quantum states of light, specifically, of Gaussian type. This result is obtained by applying the so-called "minimax" adaptive reconstruction of the Wigner function to pulsed homodyne detection. It is usually discussed that the relative phase between independent laser fields are localized by photon-number measurements in interference experiments such as homodyne detection. This provides reasoning to use operationally coherent states for laser fields in the description of homodyne detection and optical quantum-state tomography. Here, we elucidate these situations by considering the joint probability distribution and the invariance of homodyne detection under the phase transformation of optical fields.

Homodyne tomography provides a way for measuring generic field-operators. Here we analyze the determination of the most relevant quantities: intensity, field, amplitude and phase. We show that tomographic measurements are affected by additional noise in comparison with the direct detection of each observable by itself. We propose a refined iterative likelihood-maximization algorithm for reconstructing a quantum state from a set of tomographic measurements. The algorithm is characterized by a very high convergence rate and features a simple adaptive procedure that ensures likelihood increase in every iteration and convergence to the maximum-likelihood state. A pulsed balanced homodyne detector has been developed for precise measurements of electric field quadratures of pulsed optical quantum states. A high level of common mode suppression (> 85 dB) and low electronic noise (730 electrons per pulse) provide a signal to noise ratio of 14 dB for the measurement of the quantum noise of individual pulses. Measurements at repetition rates up to 1 MHz are possible. Quantum operations describe any state change allowed in quantum mechanics, including the evolution of an open system or the state change due to a measurement. In this letter we present a general method based on quantum tomography for measuring experimentally the matrix elements of an arbitrary quantum operation. As input the method needs only a single entangled state. The feasibility of the technique for the electromagnetic field is shown, and the experimental setup is illustrated based on homodyne tomography of a twin-beam.
We scrutinize the effects of non-ideal data acquisition on the homodyne tomograms of photon quantum states. The presence of a weight function, schematizing the effects of the finite thickness of the probing beam or equivalently noise, only affects the state reconstruction procedure by a normalization constant. The results are extended to a discrete mesh and show that quantum tomography is robust under incomplete and approximate knowledge of tomograms.
We propose to measure the quantum state of a single mode of the radiation field in a cavity---the signal field---by coupling it via a quantum-non-demolition Hamiltonian to a meter field in a highly squeezed state. We show that quantum state tomography on the meter field using balanced homodyne detection provides full information about the signal state. We discuss the influence of measurement of the meter on the signal field.
We give a detailed account of an efficient search algorithm for the data pattern tomography proposed by J. Rehacek, D. Mogilevtsev, and Z. Hradil [Phys. Rev. Lett.~\textbf{105}, 010402 (2010)], where the quantum state of a system is reconstructed without a priori knowledge about the measuring setup. The method is especially suited for experiments involving complex detectors, which are difficult to calibrate and characterize. We illustrate the approach with the case study of the homodyne detection of a nonclassical photon state.

For single-mode states we check violations of inequalities involving the photon-number probability. For two-mode states we test the nonclassicality by reconstructing some suitable number-operator functions. We present a new indirect method to measure the quantum state of a single mode of the electromagnetic field in a cavity. Our proposal combines the idea of (endoscopic) probing and that of tomography in the sense that the signal field is coupled via a quantum-non-demolition Hamiltonian to a meter field on which then quantum state tomography is performed using balanced homodyne detection. This technique provides full information about the signal state. We also discuss the influence of the measurement of the meter on the signal field.
