A review of the symplectic tomographic approaches within the framework of star-product quantization is presented. The classical statistical mechanics within the framework of the tomographic representation is considered. The kernels of star-product of functions - symbols of operators in classical and quantum mechanics are presented.
Quantum tomography for continuous variables is based on the symplectic transformation group acting in the phase space. A particular case of symplectic tomography is optical tomography related to the action of a special orthogonal group. In the tomographic description of spin states, the connection between special unitary and special orthogonal groups is used. We analyze the representation for spin tomography using the Cayley-Klein parameters and discuss an analog of symplectic tomography for discrete variables. We propose a representation for tomograms of discrete variables through quaternions…
Squeezed and rotated quadrature of an ion in a Paul trap is discussed in connection with reconstructing its quantum state using symplectic-tomography method. Marginal distributions of the quadrature for squeezed and correlated states and for nonlinear coherent states of a trapped ion are obtained and the density matrices in the Fock basis are expressed explicitly in terms of these marginal distributions.
By using a generalization of the optical tomography technique we describe the dynamics of a quantum system in terms of equations for a purely classical probability distribution which contains complete information about the system.
The marginal distribution of squeezed and rotated quadrature for two types of nonclassical states of trapped ion -- for squeezed and correlated states and for squeezed even and odd coherent states (squeezed Schrödinger cat states) is studied. The obtained marginal distribution for the two types of states is shown to satisfy classical dynamical equation equivalent to standard quantum evolution equation for density matrix (wave function) derived in symplectic tomography scheme.
The dynamical equation of quantum mechanics are rewritten in form of dynamical equations for the measurable, positive marginal distribution of the shifted, rotated and squeezed quadrature introduced in the so called "symplectic tomography". Then the possibility of a purely classical description of a quantum system as well as a reinterpretation of the quantum measurement theory is discussed and a comparision with the well known quasi-probabilities approach is given. Furthermore, an analysis of the properties of this marginal distribution, which contains all the quantum information, is performed…

In Phys. Rev. A 70, 032104 (2004), M. Montesinos and G. F. Torres del Castillo consider various symplectic structures on the classical phase space of the two-dimensional isotropic harmonic oscillator. Using Dirac's quantization condition, the authors investigate how these alternative symplectic forms affect this system's quantization. They claim that these symplectic structures result in mutually inequivalent quantum theories. In fact, we show here that there exists a unitary map between the two representation spaces so that the various quantizations are equivalent.
In open quantum systems, phenomenological master equations with unknown parameters are often introduced. Here we propose a time-independent procedure based on quantum tomography to reconstruct the potentially unknown parameters of a wide class of Markovian master equations. According to our scheme, the system under investigation is initially prepared in a Gaussian state. At an arbitrary time t, in order to retrieve the unknown coefficients one needs to measure only a finite number (ten at maximum) of points along three time-independent tomograms. Due to the limited amount of measurements requi…
A gauge invariant quantization in a closed integral form is developed over a linear phase space endowed with an inhomogeneous Faraday electromagnetic tensor. An analog of the Groenewold product formula (corresponding to Weyl ordering) is obtained via a membrane magnetic area, and extended to the product of N symbols. The problem of ordering in quantization is related to different configurations of membranes: a choice of configuration determines a phase factor that fixes the ordering and controls a symplectic groupoid structure on the secondary phase space. A gauge invariant solution of the qua…
The phase space is the natural ground to smoothly extrapolate between local and non-local correlation functions. With this objective, we introduce the symplectic tomography of many-body quantum gases in tight-waveguides, and concentrate on the reduced single-particle symplectic tomogram (RSPST) whose marginals are the density profile and momentum distribution. We present an operational approach to measure the RSPST from the time evolution of the density profile after shutting off the interactions in a variety of relevant situations: free expansion, fall under gravity, and oscillations in a har…
We replace the usual notion of quantum cell from statistical mechanics by that of "quantum blob". A quantum blob is the transform, by a linaer symplectic transformation, of a phase space ball with radius equal to the square root of h-bar. The intersection of a quantum blob with any symplectic plane is an ellipse with area one half of h. This very special property, which is closed related to the principle of the symplectic camel, leads to a symplectic invariant statement of the uncertainty principle. We moreover prove that the average of a phase space Gaussian over a quantum blob is the Wigner …
Geometric quantization of a Poisson manifold need not imply quantization of its symplectic leaves. We provide the leafwise geometric quantization of a Poisson manifold, seen as a foliated one, whose quantum algebra restricted to each leaf is quantized.
The probability representation of quantum and classical statistical mechanics is discussed. Symplectic tomography, center-of-mass tomography, and spin tomography are studied. The connection of tomographic probabilities with dynamic symmetries like symplectic group is considered. Entropic uncertainty relations and inequalities for spin tomograms are reviewed.
The recently proposed projection quantization, which is a method to quantize particular subspaces of systems with known quantum theory, is shown to yield a genuine quantization in several cases. This may be inferred from exact results established within symplectic cutting.
We prove that there is no faithful finite-dimensional representation by skew-hermitian matrices of a ``basic algebra of observables'' B on a noncompact symplectic manifold M. Consequently there exists no finite-dimensional quantization of any Lie subalgebra of the Poisson algebra C^\infty(M) containing B.
We address the problem of information completeness of quantum measuremets in connection to quantum state tomography and with particular concern to quantum symplectic tomography. We put forward some non-trivial situations where informationally incomplete set of tomograms allows as well the state reconstruction provided to have some a priori information on the state or its dynamics. We then introduce a measure of information completeness and apply it to symplectic quantum tomograms.
We develop a mathematically well-defined path integral formalism for general symplectic manifolds. We argue that in order to make a path integral quantization covariant under general coordinate transformations on the phase space and involve a genuine functional measure that is both finite and countably additive, the phase space manifold should be equipped with a Riemannian structure (metric). A suitable method to calculate the metric is also proposed.
We explicitly carry out the symplectic quantization of a family of multi-field Generalized Proca (GP) electrodynamics theories. In the process, we provide an independent derivation of the so-called secondary constraint enforcing relations -- consistency conditions that significantly restrict the allowed interactions in multi-field settings already at the classical level. Additionally, we unveil the existence of quantum consistency conditions, which apply in both single- and multi-field GP scenarios. Our newly found conditions imply that not all classically well-defined (multi-)GP theories are …
We analyze the quantum dynamics of the non-relativistic two-dimensional isotropic harmonic oscillator in Heisenberg's picture. Such a system is taken as toy model to analyze some of the various quantum theories that can be built from the application of Dirac's quantization rule to the various symplectic structures recently reported for this classical system. It is pointed out that that these quantum theories are inequivalent in the sense that the mean values for the operators (observables) associated with the same physical classical observable do not agree with each other. The inequivalence do…
In this paper, we construct a quantization functor, associating a complex vector space H(V) to a finite dimensional symplectic vector space V over a finite field of odd characteristic. As a result, we obtain a canonical model for the Weil representation of the symplectic group Sp(V). The main new technical result is a proof of a stronger form of the Stone-von Neumann property for the Heisenberg group. Our result answers, for the case of the Heisenberg group, a question of Kazhdan about the possible existence of a canonical vector space attached to a coadjoint orbit of a general unipotent group…
We define and study the notion of quantum polarity, which is a kind of geometric Fourier transform between sets of positions and sets of momenta. Extending previous work of ours, we show that the orthogonal projections of the covariance ellipsoid of a quantum state on the configuration and momentum spaces form what we call a dual quantum pair. We thereafter show that quantum polarity allows solving the Pauli reconstruction problem for Gaussian wavefunctions. The notion of quantum polarity exhibits a strong interplay between the uncertainty principle and symplectic and convex geometry and our a…
The scheme of photon-number tomography is discussed in the framework of star-product quantization. The connection of dual quantization scheme and observables is reviewed. The quantizer and dequantizer operators and kernels of star product of tomograms in photon-number tomography scheme and its dual one are presented in explicit form. The fidelity and state purity are discussed in photon{number tomographic scheme, and the expressions for fidelity and purity are obtained in the form of integral of the product of two photon-number tomograms with integral kernel which is presented in explicit form…
It is possible to reproduce the quantum features of quantum states, starting from a classical statistical theory and then limiting the amount of knowledge that an agent can have about an individual system [5, 18].These are so called epistemic restrictions. Such restrictions have been recently formulated in terms of the symplectic geometry of the corresponding classical theory [19]. The purpose of this note is to describe, using this symplectic framework, how to obtain a C*-algebraic formulation for the epistemically restricted theories. In the case of continuous variables, following the groupo…
