Partial symplectic conditional and joint probability representations of quantum mechanics are considered. The correspondence rules for most interesting physical operators are found and the expressions of the dual symbols of operators are derived. Calculations were made by use of general formalism of quantizers and dequantizers determining the star product quantization scheme in these representations. Taking the Gaussian functions as the distributions of the tomographic parameters the examples of joint probability representations were considered. Evolution equations and stationary states equations for partial symplectic conditional and joint probability distributions are obtained.
Quantum tomography for continuous variables is based on the symplectic transformation group acting in the phase space. A particular case of symplectic tomography is optical tomography related to the action of a special orthogonal group. In the tomographic description of spin states, the connection between special unitary and special orthogonal groups is used. We analyze the representation for spin tomography using the Cayley-Klein parameters and discuss an analog of symplectic tomography for discrete variables. We propose a representation for tomograms of discrete variables through quaternions…
Squeezed and rotated quadrature of an ion in a Paul trap is discussed in connection with reconstructing its quantum state using symplectic-tomography method. Marginal distributions of the quadrature for squeezed and correlated states and for nonlinear coherent states of a trapped ion are obtained and the density matrices in the Fock basis are expressed explicitly in terms of these marginal distributions.
By using a generalization of the optical tomography technique we describe the dynamics of a quantum system in terms of equations for a purely classical probability distribution which contains complete information about the system.
The marginal distribution of squeezed and rotated quadrature for two types of nonclassical states of trapped ion -- for squeezed and correlated states and for squeezed even and odd coherent states (squeezed Schrödinger cat states) is studied. The obtained marginal distribution for the two types of states is shown to satisfy classical dynamical equation equivalent to standard quantum evolution equation for density matrix (wave function) derived in symplectic tomography scheme.
A review of the symplectic tomographic approaches within the framework of star-product quantization is presented. The classical statistical mechanics within the framework of the tomographic representation is considered. The kernels of star-product of functions - symbols of operators in classical and quantum mechanics are presented.
The dynamical equation of quantum mechanics are rewritten in form of dynamical equations for the measurable, positive marginal distribution of the shifted, rotated and squeezed quadrature introduced in the so called "symplectic tomography". Then the possibility of a purely classical description of a quantum system as well as a reinterpretation of the quantum measurement theory is discussed and a comparision with the well known quasi-probabilities approach is given. Furthermore, an analysis of the properties of this marginal distribution, which contains all the quantum information, is performed…
The marginal distribution of squeezed, rotated and shifted quadrature for two types of nonclassical states of a trapped ion - squeezed correlated states and squeezed even and odd coherent states (squeezed Schrodinger cat states) - is studied.
In open quantum systems, phenomenological master equations with unknown parameters are often introduced. Here we propose a time-independent procedure based on quantum tomography to reconstruct the potentially unknown parameters of a wide class of Markovian master equations. According to our scheme, the system under investigation is initially prepared in a Gaussian state. At an arbitrary time t, in order to retrieve the unknown coefficients one needs to measure only a finite number (ten at maximum) of points along three time-independent tomograms. Due to the limited amount of measurements requi…
The phase space is the natural ground to smoothly extrapolate between local and non-local correlation functions. With this objective, we introduce the symplectic tomography of many-body quantum gases in tight-waveguides, and concentrate on the reduced single-particle symplectic tomogram (RSPST) whose marginals are the density profile and momentum distribution. We present an operational approach to measure the RSPST from the time evolution of the density profile after shutting off the interactions in a variety of relevant situations: free expansion, fall under gravity, and oscillations in a har…
The probability representation of quantum and classical statistical mechanics is discussed. Symplectic tomography, center-of-mass tomography, and spin tomography are studied. The connection of tomographic probabilities with dynamic symmetries like symplectic group is considered. Entropic uncertainty relations and inequalities for spin tomograms are reviewed.
We address the problem of information completeness of quantum measuremets in connection to quantum state tomography and with particular concern to quantum symplectic tomography. We put forward some non-trivial situations where informationally incomplete set of tomograms allows as well the state reconstruction provided to have some a priori information on the state or its dynamics. We then introduce a measure of information completeness and apply it to symplectic quantum tomograms.
A possibility of describing two-level atom states in terms of positive probability distributions (analog to the symplectic tomography scheme) is considered. As a result the basis of the irreducible representation of a rotation group can be realized by a family of the probability distributions of the spin projection parametrized by points on the sphere. Furthermore the tomography of rotational states of molecules and nuclei which can be described by the model of a symmetric top is discussed.
New type of tomographic probability distribution, which contains complete information on the density matrix (wave function) related to the Fresnel transform of the complex wave function, is introduced. Relation to symplectic tomographic probability distribution is elucidated. Multimode generalization of the Fresnel tomography is presented. Examples of applications of the present approach are given.
The mechanism of describing quantum states by standard probability (tomographic one) instead of wave function or density matrix is elucidated. Quantum tomography is formulated in an abstract Hilbert space framework, by means of the identity decompositions in the Hilbert space of hermitian linear operators, with trace formula as scalar product of operators. Decompositions of identity are considered with respect to over-complete families of projectors labeled by extra parameters and containing a measure, depending on these parameters. It plays the role of a Gram-Schmidt orthonormalization kernel…
We propose a quantum process tomography scheme that utilizes two-mode squeezed vacuum to realize the parameter estimation with Heisenberg scaling. The objective is to estimate a rotating angle of polarization and parity detection is used as the detection strategy. With the help of symplectic matrix theory, we discuss the estimation visibility and sensitivity of output signal in lossless situation, the quantum Fisher information is also given via calculation. Finally, the impacts of two realistic factors on both visibility and sensitivity are also considered, including photon loss during the in…
Continuous variable quantum state tomography is one of the most powerful techniques to study the properties of light fields in quantum optics. However, the need for a fixed phase reference has so far prevented widespread usage in other fields such as semiconductor spectroscopy. Here, we introduce non-stationary quantum state tomography, which adapts the technique to the special requirements of ultrafast spectroscopy. In detail, we gain access to the amplitude and phase of light fields with a temporal resolution of about 100\,fs without the need for a fixed phase reference. Further, we show how…
Invertible maps from operators of quantum obvservables onto functions of c-number arguments and their associative products are first assessed. Different types of maps like Weyl-Wigner-Stratonovich map and s-ordered quasidistribution are discussed. The recently introduced symplectic tomography map of observables (tomograms) related to the Heisenberg-Weyl group is shown to belong to the standard framework of the maps from quantum observables onto the c-number functions. The star-product for symbols of the quantum-observable for each one of the maps (including the tomographic map) and explicit re…
Symplectic and optical joint probability representations of quantum mechanics are considered, in which the functions describing the states are the probability distributions with all random arguments (except the argument of time ). The general formalism of quantizers and dequantizers determining the star product quantization scheme in these representations is given. Taking the Gaussian functions as the distributions of the tomographic parameters the correspondence rules for most interesting physical operators are found and the expressions of the dual symbols of operators in the form of singular…
A review of the photon-number tomography and symplectic tomography as examples of star-product quantization is presented. The classical statistical mechanics is considered within the framework of the tomographic representation.
We study the properties of stationary G-chains in terms of their generating functions. In particular, we prove an analogue of the Szegő limit theorem for symplectic eigenvalues, derive an expression for the entropy rate of stationary quantum Gaussian processes, and study the distribution of symplectic eigenvalues of truncated block Toeplitz matrices. We also introduce a concept of symplectic numerical range, analogous to that of numerical range, and study some of its basic properties, mainly in the context of block Toeplitz operators.
Time of flight is an intuitive way to determine the velocity of particles and lies at the heart of many capabilities ranging from mass spectrometry to fluid flow measurements. Here we show time-of-flight imaging can realize tomography of a quantum state of motion of a single trapped atom. Tomography of motion requires studying the phase space spanned by both position and momentum. By combining time-of-flight imaging with coherent evolution of the atom in an optical tweezer trap, we are able to access arbitrary quadratures in phase space without relying on coupling to a spin degree of freedom. …
We apply the notion of polar duality from convex geometry to the study of quantum covariance ellipsoids in symplectic phase space. We consider in particular the case of "quantum blobs" introduced in previous work; quantum blobs are the smallest symplectic invariant regions of the phase space compatible with the uncertainty principle in its strong Robertson--Schrödinger form. We show that these phase space units can be characterized by a simple condition of reflexivity using polar duality, thus improving previous results. We apply these geometric constructions to the characterization of pure Ga…
We study the dynamics of a general quartic interaction Hamiltonian under the influence of dissipation and non-classical driving. We show that this scenario could be realised with a cascaded superconducting cavity-qubit system in the strong dispersive regime in a setup similar to recent experiments. In the presence of dissipation, we find that an effective Hartree-type decoupling with a Fokker-Planck equation yields a good approximation. We find that the stationary state is approximately a squeezed vacuum, which is enhanced by the $Q$-factor of the cavity but conserved by the interaction. The q…
The two-dimensional Radon transform of the Wigner quasiprobability is introduced in canonical form and the functions playing a role in its inversion are discussed. The transformation properties of this Radon transform with respect to displacement and squeezing of states are studied and it is shown that the last is equivalent to a symplectic transformation of the variables of the Radon transform with the contragredient matrix to the transformation of the variables in the Wigner quasiprobability. The reconstruction of the density operator from the Radon transform and the direct reconstruction of…
Review of the probability representation of quantum mechanics and the symplectic tomography approach are presented. The examples of Gaussian states of nanoelectric circuit, Josephson junction, and two interacting high-quality resonant circuits are considered. The Shannon entropy, quantum information, fidelity, and purity of quantum states in the tomographic representation of quantum mechanics are studied.
Quantum state tomography, which aims to find the best description of a quantum state -- the density matrix, is an essential building block in quantum computation and communication. Standard techniques for state tomography are incapable of tracking changing states and often perform poorly in the presence of environmental noise. Although there are different approaches to solve these problems theoretically, experimental demonstrations have so far been sparse. Our approach, matrix-exponentiated gradient tomography, is an online tomography method that allows for state tracking, updates the estimate…
The nine-component positive vector optical tomographic probability portrait of quantum state of spin-1 particles containing full spatial and spin information about the state without redundancy is constructed. Also the suggested approach is expanded to symplectic tomography representation and to representations with quasidistributions. The evolution equations for constructed vector optical and symplectic tomograms and vector quasidistributions for arbitrary Hamiltonian are found. The evolution equations are also obtained in special case of the quantum system of charged spin-1 particle in arbitr…
We report an optical one-way quantum computing experiment with stationary quantum memory involved. First we create a hybrid four-qubit cluster state with two qubits propagating as photons and the other two stationary and stored in a laser-cooled atomic-ensemble quantum memory, and characterize it with entanglement witness and quantum state tomography. Then, by making use of this cluster state and fast operations of electro-optic modulators, we realize memory-assisted feedforward operations and demonstrate deterministic single-qubit rotation as an example.
The positive vector optical tomogram fully describing the quantum state of spin 1/2 particle without any redundancy is introduced. Reciprocally the vector symplectic tomogram and vector quasidistributions $\vec W({\mathbf q},{\mathbf p})$, $\vec Q({\mathbf q},{\mathbf p})$, $\vec P(\vecα)$ are introduced. The evolution equations for proposed vector optical and symplectic tomograms and vector quasidistributions for arbitrary Hamiltonian are obtained. The quantum system of charged spin 1/2 particle in arbitrary electro-magnetic field is considered in proposed representations and evolution equati…
2-designs -- ensembles of quantum pure states whose 2nd moments equal those of the uniform Haar ensemble -- are optimal solutions for several tasks in quantum information science, especially state and process tomography. We show that Gaussian states cannot form a 2-design for the continuous-variable (quantum optical) Hilbert space L2(R). This is surprising because the affine symplectic group HWSp (the natural symmetry group of Gaussian states) is irreducible on the symmetric subspace of two copies. In finite dimensional Hilbert spaces, irreducibility guarantees that HWSp-covariant ensembles (s…
We analyze the tomographic representation for the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) model within the Loop Quantum Cosmology framework. We focus on the Wigner quasi-probability distributions associated with Gaussian and Schrödinger cat states, and then, by applying a Radon integral transform for those Wigner functions, we are able to obtain the symplectic tomograms which define measurable probability distributions that fully characterize the quantum model of our interest. By appropriately introducing the quantum dispersion for a rotated and squeezed quadrature operator in terms of the position a…
The existing relation between the tomographic description of quantum states and the convolution algebra of certain discrete groupoids represented on Hilbert spaces will be discussed. The realizations of groupoid algebras based on qudit, photon-number (Fock) states and symplectic tomography quantizers and dequantizers will be constructed. Conditions for identifying the convolution product of groupoid functions and the star--product arising from a quantization--dequantization scheme will be given. A tomographic approach to construct quasi--distributions out of suitable immersions of groupoids in…
We propose a procedure based on symplectic tomography for reconstructing the unknown parameters of a convolutionless non-Markovian Gaussian noisy evolution. Whenever the time-dependent master equation coefficients are given as a function of some unknown time-independent parameters, we show that these parameters can be reconstructed by means of a finite number of tomograms. Two different approaches towards reconstruction, integral and differential, are presented and applied to a benchmark model made of a harmonic oscillator coupled to a bosonic bath. For this model the number of tomograms neede…
The von Neumann evolution equation for density matrix and the Moyal equation for the Wigner function are mapped onto evolution equation for optical tomogram of quantum state. The connection with known evolution equation for symplectic tomogram of the quantum state is clarified. The stationary states corresponding to quantum energy levels are associated with the probability representation of the von Neumann and Moyal equations written for the optical tomograms. Classical Liouville equation for optical tomogram is obtained. Example of parametric oscillator is considered in detail.
Using the symplectic tomography map, both for the probability distributions in classical phase space and for the Wigner functions of its quantum counterpart, we discuss a notion of Lyapunov exponent for quantum dynamics. Because the marginal distributions, obtained by the tomography map, are always well defined probabilities, the correspondence between classical and quantum notions is very clear. Then we also obtain the corresponding expressions in Hilbert space. Some examples are worked out. Classical and quantum exponents are seen to coincide for local and non-local time-dependent quadratic …
Some non-linear generalizations of classical Radon tomography were recently introduced by M. Asorey et al [Phys. Rev. A 77, 042115 (2008), where the straight lines of the standard Radon map are replaced by quadratic curves (ellipses, hyperbolas, circles) or quadratic surfaces (ellipsoids, hyperboloids, spheres). We consider here the quantum version of this novel non-linear approach and obtain, by systematic use of the Weyl map, a tomographic encoding approach to quantum states. Non-linear quantum tomograms admit a simple formulation within the framework of the star-product quantization scheme …
Generic open quantum dynamics can be described by two seemingly very distinct approaches: a top down approach by considering an (unknown) environment coupled to the system and affects the observed dynamics of the system; or a bottom up approach which tries to build an open quantum evolution model from the observed data. The process tensor framework describes all the possible observations one could possibly make on a quantum system, however it is computationally inefficient and not predictive. Here we define the purified process tensor which 1) allows efficient tomography as well as prediction …
