We exhibit some explicit co-adapted couplings for n-dimensional Brownian motion and all its Levy stochastic areas. In the two-dimensional case we show how to derive exact asymptotics for the coupling time under various mixed coupling strategies, using Dufresne's formula for the distribution of exponential functionals of Brownian motion. This yields quantitative asymptotics for the distributions of random times required for certain simultaneous couplings of stochastic area and Brownian motion. The approach also applies to higher dimensions, but will then lead to upper and lower bounds rather than exact asymptotics.
In this paper we study some applications of the Lévy logarithmic Sobolev inequality to the study of the regularity of the solution of the fractal heat equation, i. e. the heat equation where the Laplacian is replaced with the fractional Laplacian. It is also used to the study of the asymptotic behaviour of the Lévy-Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process.
A version of the saddle point method is developed, which allows one to describe exactly the asymptotic behavior of distribution densities of Levy driven stochastic integrals with deterministic kernels. Exact asymptotic behavior is established for (a) the transition probability density of a real-valued Levy process; (b) the transition probability density and the invariant distribution density of a Levy driven Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process; (c) the distribution density of the fractional Levy motion.
We give asymptotic estimations on the area of the sets of points with large Brownian winding, and study the average winding between a planar Brownian motion and a Poisson point process of large intensity on the plane. This allows us to give a new definition of the Lévy area which does not rely on approximations of the Brownian path.
In this work we characterize the local asymptotic self-similarity of harmonizable fractional Lévy motions in the heavy tailed case. The corresponding tangent process is shown to be the harmonizable fractional stable motion. In addition, we provide sufficient conditions for existence of harmonizable fractional Lévy motions.
We study a family of quantum analogs of Lévy's stochastic area for planar Brownian motion depending on a variance parameter $σ\geq 1$ which deform to the classical Lévy area as $σ\rightarrow\infty$. They are defined as second rank iterated stochastic integrals against the components of planar Brownian motion, which are one-dimensional Brownian motions satisfying Heisnberg-type commutation relations. Such iterated integrals can be multiplied using the sticky shuffle product determined by the underlying Itô algebra of stochastic differentials. We use the corresponding Hopf algebra structure to e…
We derive the exact asymptotics of $P(\sup_{u\leq t}X(u) > x)$ if $x$ and $t$ tend to infinity with $x/t$ constant, for a Lévy process $X$ that admits exponential moments. The proof is based on a renewal argument and a two-dimensional renewal theorem of Höglund (1990).
A careful look at rough path topology applied to Brownian motion reveals new possible properties of the well-known Lévy area, in particular the presence of an intrinsic drift of this area. Using renormalization limit of Markov chains on periodic graphs, we present a construction of such a non-trivial drift and give an explicit formula for it. Several examples for which explicit computations are made are included.
Lévy's stochastic area for planar Brownian motion is the difference of two iterated integrals of second rank against its component one-dimen\-sional Brownian motions. Such iterated integrals can be multiplied using the sticky shuffle product determined by the underlying Itô algebra of stochastic differentials. We use combinatorial enumerations that arise from the distributive law in the corresponding Hopf algebra structure to evaluate the moments of Lévy's area. These Lévy moments are well known to be given essentially by the Euler numbers. This has recently been confirmed in a novel combinato…
We study a first passage time of a Lévy process over a positive constant level. In the spectrally negative case we give conditions for absolutely continuity of the distributions of the first passage times. The tail asymptotics of their densities are also clarified, where the asymptotics depend on tail behaviour of the corresponding Lévy measures. We apply our results to the mathematical finance, in particular, the credit default swap pricing.
We present a new method for sampling the Levy area for a two-dimensional Wiener process conditioned on its endpoints. An efficient sampler for the Levy area is required to implement a strong Milstein numerical scheme to approximate the solution of a stochastic differential equation driven by a two-dimensional Wiener process whose diffusion vector fields do not commute. Our method is simple and complementary to those of Gaines-Lyons and Wiktorsson, and amenable to quasi-Monte--Carlo implementation. It is based on representing the Levy area by an infinite weighted sum of independent Logistic ran…
In this article, we study the numerical approximation of stochastic differential equations driven by a multidimensional fractional Brownian motion (fBm) with Hurst parameter greater than 1/3. We introduce an implementable scheme for these equations, which is based on a second order Taylor expansion, where the usual Levy area terms are replaced by products of increments of the driving fBm. The convergence of our scheme is shown by means of a combination of rough paths techniques and error bounds for the discretisation of the Levy area terms.
The goal of the paper is to analytically examine escape probabilities for dynamical systems driven by symmetric $α$-stable Lévy motions. Since escape probabilities are solutions of a type of integro-differential equations (i.e., differential equations with nonlocal interactions), asymptotic methods are offered to solve these equations to obtain escape probabilities when noises are sufficiently small. Three examples are presented to illustrate the asymptotic methods, and asymptotic escape probability is compared with numerical simulations.
We establish the global asymptotic equivalence between a pure jumps Lévy process $\{X_t\}$ on the time interval $[0,T]$ with unknown Lévy measure $ν$ belonging to a non-parametric class and the observation of $2m^2$ Poisson independent random variables with parameters linked with the Lévy measure $ν$. The equivalence result is asymptotic as $m$ tends to infinity. The time $T$ is kept fixed and the sample path is continuously observed. This result justifies the idea that, from a statistical point of view, knowing how many jumps fall into a grid of intervals gives asymptotically the same amount …
We determine the asymptotic behavior of the realized power variations, or more generally of sums of a given test function evaluated at the successive increments of a Lévy process. One can completely elucidate the first order behavior (convergence in probability, possibly after normalization). As for the associated CLT, one can show some versions of it, but only in a limited number of cases. In some other cases, a CLT just does not exist.
We determine the rate of decrease of the right tail distribution of the exponential functional of a Levy process with a convolution equivalent Levy measure. Our main result establishes that it decreases as the right tail of the image under the exponential function of the Levy measure of the underlying Levy process. The method of proof relies on fluctuation theory of Levy processes and an explicit path-wise representation of the exponential functional as the exponential functional of a bivariate subordinator. Our techniques allow us to establish rather general estimates of the measure of the ex…
It is shown how to construct a successful co-adapted coupling of two copies of an $n$-dimensional Brownian motion $(B_1,...,B_n)$ while simultaneously coupling all corresponding copies of Lévy stochastic areas $\int B_i dB_j-\int B_j dB_i$. It is conjectured that successful co-adapted couplings still exist when the Lévy stochastic areas are replaced by a finite set of multiply iterated path- and time-integrals, subject to algebraic compatibility of the initial conditions.
Let $B=(B^{(1)},B^{(2)})$ be a two-dimensional fractional Brownian motion with Hurst index $α\in (0,1/4)$. Using an analytic approximation $B(η)$ of $B$ introduced in \cite{Unt08}, we prove that the rescaled Lévy area process $(s,t)\to η^{\half(1-4α)}\int_s^t dB_{t_1}^{(1)}(η) \int_s^{t_1} dB_{t_2}^{(2)}(η)$ converges in law to $W_t-W_s$ where $W$ is a Brownian motion independent from $B$. The method relies on a very general scheme of analysis of singularities of analytic functions, applied to the moments of finite-dimensional distributions of the Lévy area.
In this paper we first provide several conditional limit theorems for Lévy processes with negative drift and regularly varying tail. Then we apply them to study the asymptotic behavior of expectations of some exponential functionals of heavy-tailed Lévy processes. As the key point, we observe that the asymptotics mainly depends on the sample paths with early arrival large jump. Both the polynomial decay rate and the exact expression of the limit coefficients are given. As an application, we give an exact description for the extinction speed of continuous-state branching processes in heavy-tail…
We construct a coupling between the random walk composed of Lévy area increments from a $d$-dimensional Brownian motion and a random walk composed of quadratic polynomials of Gaussian random variables. This coupling construction is used to produce a new pathwise approximation scheme for stochastic differential equations in the preprint [Flint-Lyons-2015]. The coupling arguments of the present paper are based extensively on the recent coupling results of Davie concerning a multidimensional variant of the Komlós-Major-Tusnády theorem and Wasserstein estimates for polynomial perturbations of Gaus…
We investigate the distribution properties of the fractional Lévy motion. We consider separately the cases $0<H<1/2$ (short memory) and $1/2<H<1$ (long memory), where $H$ is the Hurst parameter, and present the asymptotic behaviour of the distribution density of the process. Some examples are provided, in which it is shown that the behaviour of the density in the cases $0<H<1/2$ and $1/2<H<1$ is completely different.
For arbitrary Borel probability measures on the real line, necessary and sufficient conditions are presented that characterize best purely atomic approximations relative to the classical Levy probability metric, given any number of atoms, and allowing for additional constraints regarding locations or weights of atoms. The precise asymptotics (as the number of atoms goes to infinity) of the approximation error is identified for the important special cases of best uniform (i.e., all atoms having equal weight) and best (unconstrained) approximations, respectively. When compared to similar results…
We study the exact asymptotics for the distribution of the first time $τ_x$ a Lévy process $X_t$ crosses a negative level $-x$. We prove that $\mathbf P(τ_x>t)\sim V(x)\mathbf P(X_t\ge 0)/t$ as $t\to\infty$ for a certain function $V(x)$. Using known results for the large deviations of random walks we obtain asymptotics for $\mathbf P(τ_x>t)$ explicitly in both light and heavy tailed cases. We also apply our results to find asymptotics for the distribution of the busy period in an M/G/1 queue.
In this work we give a complete description to the asymptotic behaviors of exponential functionals of Lévy processes and divide them into five different types according to their convergence rates. Not only their exact convergence speeds are proved, the accurate limit constants are also given. As an application, we study the survival probabilities of continuous-state branching processes in random environment defined in He et al. (2016). Like the discrete case and branching diffusion in random environment, we classify them into five different types according to their extinction speeds.
In this paper, we study the asymptotic behaviour of one-dimensional integrated Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes driven by $α$-stable Lévy processes of small amplitude. We prove that the integrated Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process converges weakly to the underlying $α$-stable Lévy process in the Skorokhod $M_1$-topology which secures the weak convergence of first passage times. This result follows from a more general result about approximations of an arbitrary Lévy process by continuous integrated Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes in the $M_1$-topology.
We study the asymptotic tail behaviour of the first-passage time over a moving boundary for asymptotically $α$-stable Lévy processes with $α<1$. Our main result states that if the left tail of the Lévy measure is regularly varying with index $- α$ and the moving boundary is equal to $1 - t^γ$ for some $γ<1/α$, then the probability that the process stays below the moving boundary has the same asymptotic polynomial order as in the case of a constant boundary. The same is true for the increasing boundary $1 + t^γ$ with $γ<1/α$ under the assumption of a regularly varying right tail with index $- α…
Recent models of the insurance risk process use a Lévy process to generalise the traditional Cramér-Lundberg compound Poisson model. This paper is concerned with the behaviour of the distributions of the overshoot and undershoots of a high level, for a Lévy process which drifts to $-\infty$ and satisfies a Cramér or a convolution equivalent condition. We derive these asymptotics under minimal conditions in the Cramér case, and compare them with known results for the convolution equivalent case, drawing attention to the striking and unexpected fact that they become identical when certain parame…
We consider rough paths with jumps. In particular, the analogue of Lyons' extension theorem and rough integration are established in a jump setting, offering a pathwise view on stochastic integration against cadlag processes. A class of Levy rough paths is introduced and characterized by a sub-ellipticity condition on the left-invariant diffusion vector fields and and a certain integrability property of the Carnot--Caratheodory norm with respect to the Levy measure on the group, using Hunt's framework of Lie group valued Levy processes. Examples of Levy rough paths include standard multi-dimen…
The goal of this paper is to derive a formula for the finite dimensional joint characteristic function (the Fourier transform of the finite dimensional distribution) of the coupled process ${(W_{t},L_{t}^{A}):t\in \lbrack 0,\infty)}$, where $\{W_{t}:t\in \lbrack 0,\infty)}$ is a $d$-dimensional Brownian motion and $\{L_{t}^{A}:t\in \lbrack 0,\infty)}$ is the generalized $d$-dimensional L$\acute{e}$vy's stochastic area process associated to a $d\times d$ matrix $A.$ Here $A$ need not be skew-symmetric, and in our computation we allow $A$ to vary. The problem finally reduces to the solution of a…
We present a new way to compute the moments of the Lévy area of a two-dimensional Brownian motion. Our approach uses iterated integrals and combinatorial arguments involving the shuffle product.
In this paper we present some limit theorems for power variation of Lévy semi-stationary processes in the setting of infill asymptotics. Lévy semi-stationary processes, which are a one-dimensional analogue of ambit fields, are moving average type processes with a multiplicative random component, which is usually referred to as volatility or intermittency. From the mathematical point of view this work extends the asymptotic theory investigated in [14], where the authors derived the limit theory for $k$th order increments of stationary increments Lévy driven moving averages. The asymptotic resul…
In this article we consider Lévy driven continuous time moving average processes observed on a lattice, which are stationary time series. We show asymptotic normality of the sample mean, the sample autocovariances and the sample autocorrelations. A comparison with the classical setting of discrete moving average time series shows that in the last case a correction term should be added to the classical Bartlett formula that yields the asymptotic variance. An application to the asymptotic normality of the estimator of the Hurst exponent of fractional Lévy processes is also deduced from these res…
In this article, we give sharp bounds for the Euler- and trapezoidal discretization of the Levy area associated to a d-dimensional fractional Brownian motion. We show that there are three different regimes for the exact root mean-square convergence rate of the Euler scheme. For H<3/4 the exact convergence rate is n^{-2H+1/2}, where n denotes the number of the discretization subintervals, while for H=3/4 it is n^{-1} (log(n))^{1/2} and for H>3/4 the exact rate is n^{-1}. Moreover, the trapezoidal scheme has exact convergence rate n^{-2H+1/2} for H>1/2. Finally, we also derive the asymptotic err…
This paper aims at semi-parametrically estimating the input process to a Lévy-driven queue by sampling the workload process at Poisson times. We construct a method-of-moments based estimator for the Lévy process' characteristic exponent. This method exploits the known distribution of the workload sampled at an exponential time, thus taking into account the dependence between subsequent samples. Verifiable conditions for consistency and asymptotic normality are provided, along with explicit expressions for the asymptotic variance. The method requires an intermediate estimation step of estimatin…
We study a reaction-diffusion evolution equation perturbed by a space-time Lévy noise. The associated Kolmogorov operator is the sum of the infinitesimal generator of a $C_0$-semigroup of strictly negative type acting in a Hilbert space and a nonlinear term which has at most polynomial growth, is non necessarily Lipschitz and is such that the whole system is dissipative. The corresponding Itô stochastic equation describes a process on a Hilbert space with dissi- pative nonlinear, non globally Lipschitz drift and a Lévy noise. Under smoothness assumptions on the non-linearity, asymptotics to al…
For a multivariate Lévy process satisfying the Cramér moment condition and having a drift vector with at least one negative component, we derive the exact asymptotics of the probability of ever hitting the positive orthant that is being translated to infinity along a fixed vector with positive components. This problem is motivated by the multivariate ruin problem introduced in F. Avram et al. (2008) in the two-dimensional case. Our solution relies on the analysis from Y. Pan and K. Borovkov (2017) for multivariate random walks and an appropriate time discretization.
We analyze the spatial asymptotic properties of the solution to the stochastic heat equation driven by an additive Lévy space-time white noise. For fixed time $t > 0$ and space $x \in \mathbb{R}^d$ we determine the exact tail behavior of the solution both for light-tailed and for heavy-tailed Lévy jump measures. Based on these asymptotics we determine for any fixed time $t> 0$ the almost-sure growth rate of the solution as $|x| \to \infty$.
We give meaning to differential equations with a rough path term and a Brownian noise term as driving signals. Such differential equations as well as the question of regularity of the solution map arise naturally and we discuss two applications: one revisits Clark's robustness problem in nonlinear filtering, the other is a Feynman--Kac type representation of linear RPDEs. En passant, we give a short and direct argument that implies integrability estimates for rough differential equations with Gaussian driving signals which is of independent interest.
Let (X_t, t>=0) be a Levy process started at 0, with Levy measure nu and T_x the first hitting time of level x>0: T_x:=inf{t>=0; X_t>x}. Let $F(theta, mu, rho,.) be the joint Laplace transform of (T_x, K_x, L_x): F(theta,mu,rho,x) :=E(e^(-theta T_x - mu K_x ρL_x) 1_(T_x<+infinity)), where theta>=0, mu>=0, rho>=0, x>=0, K_x:=X_(T_x)-x and L_x:=x-X_(T_(x^-)). If we assume that nu has finite exponential moments we exhibit an asymptotic expansion for F(theta,mu,rho,x), as x -> +infinity. A limit theorem involving a normalization of the triplet (T_x,K_x,L_x) as x -> +infinity, may be deduced. At la…
We study the first exit times form a reduced domain of attraction of a stable fixed of the Chafee-Infante equation when perturbed by a heavy tailed Lévy noise with small intensity.
We propose non-asymptotic controls of the cumulative distribution function $P(|X_{t}|\ge \varepsilon)$, for any $t>0$, $\varepsilon>0$ and any Lévy process $X$ such that its Lévy density is bounded from above by the density of an $α$-stable type Lévy process in a neighborhood of the origin. The results presented are non-asymptotic and optimal, they apply to a large class of Lévy processes.
Understanding the space-time features of how a Lévy process crosses a constant barrier for the first time, and indeed the last time, is a problem which is central to many models in applied probability such as queueing theory, financial and actuarial mathematics, optimal stopping problems, the theory of branching processes to name but a few. In \cite{KD} a new quintuple law was established for a general Lévy process at first passage below a fixed level. In this article we use the quintuple law to establish a family of related joint laws, which we call $n$-tuple laws, for Lévy processes, Lévy pr…
For a recurrent linear diffusion on $\R_+$ we study the asymptotics of the distribution of its local time at 0 as the time parameter tends to infinity. Under the assumption that the Lévy measure of the inverse local time is subexponential this distribution behaves asymtotically as a multiple of the Lévy measure. Using spectral representations we find the exact value of the multiple. For this we also need a result on the asymptotic behavior of the convolution of a subexponential distribution and an arbitrary distribution on $\R_+.$ The exact knowledge of the asymptotic behavior of the distribut…
The main tool for stochastic calculus with respect to a multidimensional process $B$ with small Hölder regularity index is rough path theory. Once $B$ has been lifted to a rough path, a stochastic calculus -- as well as solutions to stochastic differential equations driven by $B$ -- follow by standard arguments. Although such a lift has been proved to exist by abstract arguments \cite{LyoVic07}, a first general, explicit construction has been proposed in \cite{Unt09,Unt09bis} under the name of Fourier normal ordering. The purpose of this short note is to convey the main ideas of the Fourier no…
We examine the almost-sure asymptotics of the solution to the stochastic heat equation driven by a Lévy space-time white noise. When a spatial point is fixed and time tends to infinity, we show that the solution develops unusually high peaks over short time intervals, even in the case of additive noise, which leads to a breakdown of an intuitively expected strong law of large numbers. More precisely, if we normalize the solution by an increasing nonnegative function, we either obtain convergence to $0$, or the limit superior and/or inferior will be infinite. A detailed analysis of the jumps fu…

Let $p_t(x)$, $f_t(x)$ and $q_t^*(x)$ be the densities at time $t$ of a real Lévy process, its running supremum and the entrance law of the reflected excursions at the infimum. We provide relationships between the asymptotic behaviour of $p_t(x)$, $f_t(x)$ and $q_t^*(x)$, when $t$ is small and $x$ is large. Then for large $x$, these asymptotic behaviours are compared to this of the density of the Lévy measure. We show in particular that, under mild conditions, if $p_t(x)$ is comparable to $tν(x)$, as $t\rightarrow0$ and $x\rightarrow\infty$, then so is $f_t(x)$.
We show that a conditional characteristic function of generalized Lévy stochastic areas can be viewed as a product a selfdecomposable distribution (i.e., Lévy class L distribution) and its background driving characteristic function. This provides a stochastic interpretation for a ratio of some Bessel functions as well as examples of characteristic functions from van Dantzig class.
This paper considers magnitude, asymptotics and duration of drawdowns for some Lévy processes. First, we revisit some existing results on the magnitude of drawdowns for spectrally negative Lévy processes using an approximation approach. For any spectrally negative Lévy process whose scale functions are well-behaved at $0+$, we then study the asymptotics of drawdown quantities when the threshold of drawdown magnitude approaches zero. We also show that such asymptotics is robust to perturbations of additional positive compound Poisson jumps. Finally, thanks to the asymptotic results and some rec…
Let $X$ be a real valued Lévy process that is in the domain of attraction of a stable law without centering with norming function $c.$ As an analogue of the random walk results in \cite{vw} and \cite{rad} we study the local behaviour of the distribution of the lifetime $ζ$ under the characteristic measure $\underline{n}$ of excursions away from 0 of the process $X$ reflected in its past infimum, and of the first passage time of $X$ below $0,$ $T_{0}=\inf \{t>0:X_{t}<0\},$ under $\mathbb{P}_{x}(\cdot),$ for $x>0,$ in two different regimes for $x,$ viz. $x=o(c(\cdot))$ and $x>D c(\cdot),$ for so…
We provide explicit formulas for asymptotic densities of $d$-dimensional isotropic Lévy walks, when $d>1$. The densities of multidimensional undershooting and overshooting Lévy walks are presented as well. Interestingly, when the number of dimensions is odd the densities of all these Lévy walks are given by elementary functions. When $d$ is even, we can express the densities as fractional derivatives of hypergeometric functions, which makes an efficient numerical evaluation possible.
We study the almost sure asymptotic behavior of the supremum of the local time for a transient diffusion in a spectrally negative Lévy environment. More precisely, we provide the proper renormalizations for the extremely large and the extremely small values of the supremum of the local time. In particular, in the sub-ballistic regime, we link the almost sure behavior of the supremum of the local time with the left asymptotic tail of the exponential functional of the environment conditioned to stay positive, which allows to use the properties of such exponential functionals to characterize the …
