We determine the asymptotic behavior of the realized power variations, or more generally of sums of a given test function evaluated at the successive increments of a Lévy process. One can completely elucidate the first order behavior (convergence in probability, possibly after normalization). As for the associated CLT, one can show some versions of it, but only in a limited number of cases. In some other cases, a CLT just does not exist.
New algorithms for computing of asymptotic expansions for stationary distributions of nonlinearly perturbed semi-Markov processes are presented. The algorithms are based on special techniques of sequential phase space reduction, which can be applied to processes with asymptotically coupled and uncoupled finite phase spaces.
A variational formula for the asymptotic variance of general Markov processes is obtained. As application, we get a upper bound of the mean exit time of reversible Markov processes, and some comparison theorems between the reversible and non-reversible diffusion processes.
We derive the asymptotic behavior for an additive functional of two independent self-similar Gaussian processes when their intersection local time exists, using the method of moments.
We consider risk-neutral returns and show how their tail asymptotics translate directly to asymptotics of the implied volatility smile, thereby sharpening Roger Lee's celebrated moment formula. The theory of regular variation provides the ideal mathematical framework to formulate and prove such results. The practical value of our formulae comes from the vast literature on tail asymptotics and our conditions are often seen to be true by simple inspection of known results.
We identify general conditions under which regenerative processes with dependent cycles and cycle lengths are asymptotically independent. The result is applied to various models. In particular, independent Lévy processes with dependent secondary jumps at the origin (e.g., workloads of parallel M/G/1 queues with server vacations), the asymptotic performance of real-time status systems with multiple correlated sources measured by the stationary probability of an updated system and asymptotic results for clearing processes with dependent arrivals of inputs and clearings.
We study the asymptotic behavior of weighted power variations of fractional Brownian motion in Brownian time Z_t:= X_{Y_t}, t >= 0, where X is a fractional Brownian motion and Y is an independent Brownian motion.
We observe the Galton-Watson Branching Processes. Limit properties of transition functions and their convergence to invariant measures are investigated.
Using complex analysis techniques we obtain precise asymptotic approximations for the kernels corresponding to the symmetric $α$-stable processes and their fractional derivatives. We apply our method to general Lévy processes whose characteristic functions are radial and satisfy some regularity and size conditions.
We obtain the Lifschitz tail asymptotics for the integrated density of states of the subordinate $α-$stable processes on the Sierpiński gasket $\mathcal G,$ evolving among killing Poissonian obstacles. Simultaneously, we derive the large-time asymptotics for the volume of the $α-$stable sausage on the gasket.
New algorithms for construction of asymptotic expansions for stationary distributions of nonlinearly perturbed semi-Markov processes with finite phase spaces are presented. These algorithms are based on a special technique of sequential phase space reduction, which can be applied to processes with an arbitrary asymptotic communicative structure of phase spaces. Asymptotic expansions are given in two forms, without and with explicit bounds for remainders.
Asymptotic expansions with explicit upper bounds for remainders are given for stationary distributions of nonlinearly perturbed semi-Markov processes with finite phase spaces. The corresponding algorithms are based on a special technique of sequential phase space reduction, which can be applied to processes with an arbitrary asymptotic communicative structure of phase spaces.
Hawkes process is a class of simple point processes with self-exciting and clustering properties. Hawkes process has been widely applied in finance, neuroscience, social networks, criminology, seismology, and many other fields. In this paper, we study fluctuations, large deviations and moderate deviations nonlinear Hawkes processes in a new asymptotic regime, the large intensity function and the small exciting function regime. It corresponds to the large baseline intensity asymptotics for the linear case, and can also be interpreted as the asymptotics for the mean process of Hawkes processes o…
Making use of a Rice-like series expansion, for a class of stationary Gaussian processes the asymptotic behavior of the first passage time probability density function through certain time-varying boundaries, including periodic boundaries, is determined. Sufficient conditions are then given such that the density asymptotically exhibits an exponential behavior when the boundary is either asymptotically constant or asymptotically periodic.
In this note, we study the asymptotic behaviour near extinction of (sub-) critical continuous state branching processes. In particular, we establish an analogue of Khintchin's law of the iterated logarithm near extinction time for a continuous state branching process whose branching mechanism satisfies a given condition and its reflected process at its infimum.
The aim of this paper is to study the asymptotic expansion in total variation in the Central Limit Theorem when the law of the basic random variable is locally lower-bounded by the Lebesgue measure (or equivalently, has an absolutely continuous component): we develop the error in powers of $n^{-1/2}$ and give an explicit formula for the approximating measure.
In this paper we provide explicit representations of Laplace transforms of extinction time and total progeny of rough continuous-state branching processes introduced in [7]. Also, we show that their tail distributions are much fatter than those of Feller branching diffusions.
In this paper, we formulate and prove new properties of conditional quantiles given one of the particular sigma-fields. Next, we use them to investigate almost sure asymptotic behavior of central order statistics which arise from strictly stationary processes. Specifically we provide a new version of a strong ergodic theorem for central order statistics.
Poisson shot noise processes are natural generalizations of compound Poisson processes that have been widely applied in insurance, neuroscience, seismology, computer science and epidemiology. In this paper we study sharp deviations, fluctuations and the stable probability approximation of Poisson shot noise processes. Our achievements extend, improve and complement existing results in the literature. We apply the theoretical results to Poisson cluster point processes, including generalized linear Hawkes processes, and risk processes with delayed claims. Many examples are discussed in detail.
The paper presents new asymptotic recurrent algorithms of phase space reduction for regularly and singularly perturbed semi-Markov processes. These algorithms give effective conditions of weak convergence for distributions and convergence of expectations for hitting times as well as recurrent formulas for computing the corresponding normalisation functions, Laplace transforms for limiting distributions and limits for expectations.
We prove that typical (in the model-free finance setting) price paths with jumps may be uniformly approximated with accuracy $c>0$ by paths whose total variation is of order $1/c.$ A more precise result is obtained for semimartingales with jumps.
It is shown how the central limit theorem for U-statistics of spatial Poisson point processes can help to derive the central limit theorem for U-statistics of a Gibbs facet process from stochastic geometry. A full-dimensional submodel enables a simpler approach to the investigation. Finally the general situation is studied and the asymptotics with increasing intensity is described.
The asymptotic behavior of the tail probabilities for the first hitting times of the Bessel process with arbitrary index is shown without using the explicit expressions for the distribution function obtained in the authors' previous works.
Let $\{X(t),t\ge0\}$ be a centered Gaussian process and let $γ$ be a non-negative constant. In this paper we study the asymptotics of $P\{\underset{t\in [0,\mathcal{T}/u^γ]}\sup X(t)>u\}$ as $u\to\infty$, with $\mathcal{T}$ an independent of $X$ non-negative random variable. As an application, we derive the asymptotics of finite-time ruin probability of time-changed fractional Brownian motion risk processes.
We investigate some asymptotic properties of general Markov processes conditioned not to be absorbed by moving boundaries. We first give general criteria involving an exponential convergence towards the Q-process, that is the law of the considered Markov process conditioned never to reach the moving boundaries. This exponential convergence allows us to state the existence and uniqueness of quasi-ergodic distribution considering either boundaries moving periodically or stabilizing boundaries. We also state the existence and uniqueness of quasi-limit distribution when absorbing boundaries stabil…
We compute the posterior distributions of the initial population and parameter of binary branching processes, in the limit of a large number of generations. We compare this Bayesian procedure with a more naïve one, based on hitting times of some random walks. In both cases, central limit theorems are available, with explicit variances.
Scaling limits for continuous-time branching processes with discrete state space are provided as the initial state tends to infinity. Depending on the finiteness or non-finiteness of the mean and/or the variance of the offspring distribution, the limits are in general time-inhomogeneous Gaussian processes, time-inhomogeneous generalized Ornstein-Uhlenbeck type processes or continuous-state branching processes. We also provide transfer results showing how specific asymptotic relations for the probability generating function of the offspring distribution carry over to those of the one-dimensiona…
For a real cadlag function $f$ and positive constant $c$ we find another cadlag function, which has the smallest total variation possible among the functions uniformly approximating f with accuracy c=2. The solution is expressed with the truncated variation, upward truncated variation and downward truncated variation introduced in the papers R. Łochowski, Truncated variation of Brownian motion with drift, Bull. Pol. Acad. Sci. Math. Vol. 56 (2008) and R. Łochowski, Truncated variation, upward truncated variation and downward truncated variation of Brownian motion with drift - their characteris…
We derive the exact asymptotics of $P(\sup_{u\leq t}X(u) > x)$ if $x$ and $t$ tend to infinity with $x/t$ constant, for a Lévy process $X$ that admits exponential moments. The proof is based on a renewal argument and a two-dimensional renewal theorem of Höglund (1990).
This paper is concerned with the asymptotic behavior of sums of terms which are a test function f evaluated at successive increments of a discretely sampled semimartingale. Typically the test function is a power function (when the power is 2 we get the realized quadratic variation) . We prove a variety of ``laws of large numbers'', that is convergence in probability of these sums, sometimes after normalization. We also exhibit in many cases the rate of convergence, as well as associated central limit theorems.
In this paper, we study the asymptotic behaviour of one-dimensional integrated Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes driven by $α$-stable Lévy processes of small amplitude. We prove that the integrated Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process converges weakly to the underlying $α$-stable Lévy process in the Skorokhod $M_1$-topology which secures the weak convergence of first passage times. This result follows from a more general result about approximations of an arbitrary Lévy process by continuous integrated Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes in the $M_1$-topology.
The sharp asymptotics for the L^2-quantization errors of Gaussian measures on a Hilbert space and, in particular, for Gaussian processes is derived. The condition imposed is regular variation of the eigenvalues.
This paper is devoted to the analysis of the finite-dimensional distributions and asymptotic behavior of extremal Markov processes connected to the Kendall convolution. In particular, based on its stochastic representation, we provide general formula for finite dimensional distributions of the random walk driven by the Kendall convolution for a large class of step size distributions. Moreover, we prove limit theorems for random walks and connected continuous time stochastic process.
Affine point processes are a class of simple point processes with self- and mutually-exciting properties, and they have found useful applications in several areas. In this paper, we obtain large-time asymptotic expansions in large deviations and refined central limit theorem for affine point processes, using the framework of mod-phi convergence. Our results extend the large-time limit theorems in [Zhang et al. 2015. Math. Oper. Res. 40(4), 797-819]. The resulting explicit approximations for large deviation probabilities and tail expectations can be used as an alternative to importance sampling…
We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the regular variation of the variance of partial sums of functionals of discrete and continuous-time stationary Markov processes with normal transition operators. We also construct a class of Metropolis-Hastings algorithms which satisfy a central limit theorem and invariance principle when the variance is not linear in $n$.
In this paper, we study mixed power-exponential moment functionals of nonlinearly perturbed semi-Markov processes in discrete time. Conditions under which the moment functionals of interest can be expanded in asymptotic power series with respect to the perturbation parameter are given. We show how the coefficients in these expansions can be computed from explicit recursive formulas. In particular, the results of the present paper have applications for studies of quasi-stationary distributions.
In this work we give a complete description to the asymptotic behaviors of exponential functionals of Lévy processes and divide them into five different types according to their convergence rates. Not only their exact convergence speeds are proved, the accurate limit constants are also given. As an application, we study the survival probabilities of continuous-state branching processes in random environment defined in He et al. (2016). Like the discrete case and branching diffusion in random environment, we classify them into five different types according to their extinction speeds.
We derive logarithmic asymptotics of probabilities of small deviations for iterated processes in the space of trajectories. We find conditions under which these asymptotics coincide with those of processes generating iterated processes. When these conditions fail the asymptotics are quite different.
For any real-valued stochastic process X with càdlàg paths we define non-empty family of processes, which have finite total variation, have jumps of the same order as the process X and uniformly approximate its paths: This allows to decompose any real-valued stochastic process with càdlàg paths and infinite total variation into a sum of uniformly close, finite variation process and an adapted process, with arbitrary small amplitude but infinite total variation. Another application of the defined class is the definition of the stochastic integral with respect to the process X as a limit of path…
In this paper we first provide several conditional limit theorems for Lévy processes with negative drift and regularly varying tail. Then we apply them to study the asymptotic behavior of expectations of some exponential functionals of heavy-tailed Lévy processes. As the key point, we observe that the asymptotics mainly depends on the sample paths with early arrival large jump. Both the polynomial decay rate and the exact expression of the limit coefficients are given. As an application, we give an exact description for the extinction speed of continuous-state branching processes in heavy-tail…
We observe the continuous-time Markov Branching Process without high-order moments and allowing Immigration. Limit properties of transition functions and their convergence to invariant measures are investigated. Main mathematical tool is regularly varying generating functions with remainder.
We characterize the finite variation property for stationary increment mixed moving averages driven by infinitely divisible random measures. Such processes include fractional and moving average processes driven by Levy processes, and also their mixtures. We establish two types of zero-one laws for the finite variation property. We also consider some examples to illustrate our results.
The purpose of this paper is to study the asymptotic behavior of the weighted least square estimators of the unknown parameters of random coefficient bifurcating autoregressive processes. Under suitable assumptions on the immigration and the inheritance, we establish the almost sure convergence of our estimators, as well as a quadratic strong law and central limit theorems. Our study mostly relies on limit theorems for vector-valued martingales.
Cohen, Guyon, Perrin and Pontier have given assumptions under which the second-order quadratic variations of a Gaussian process converge almost surely to a deterministic limit. In this paper we present two new convergence results about these variations: the first is a deterministic asymptotic expansion; the second is a central limit theorem. Next we apply these results to identify two-parameter fractional Brownian motion and anisotropic fractional Brownian motion.
In this paper, according to a certain criterion, we divide the exponential distribution class into three subclasses. One of them is closely related to the regular-variation-tailed distribution class, so it is called the semi-regular-variation-tailed distribution class. In the class, although all distributions are not convolution equivalent, they still have some good properties. We give the precise tail asymptotic expression of convolution of these distributions, and prove that the new class is closed under convolution. In addition, we do not need to require the corresponding random variables to…
We investigate the inhomogeneous Galton--Watson processes with immigration, where $ρ_n$ the offspring means in the $n^\textrm{th}$ generation tends to 1. We show that if the second derivatives of the offspring generating functions go to 0 rapidly enough, then the asymptotics are the same as in the INAR(1) case, treated by Györfi et al. We also determine the limit if this assumption does not hold showing the optimality of the conditions.
Multi-type inhomogeneous Galton--Watson process with immigration is investigated, where the offspring mean matrix slowly converges to a critical mean matrix. Under general conditions we obtain limit distribution for the process, where the coordinates of the limit vector are not necessarily independent.
Consider a supercritical Crump--Mode--Jagers process such that all births are at integer times (the lattice case). We show that under a certain condition on the intensity of the offspring process, the second-order fluctuations of the age distribution are asymptotically normal; the condition is essential and not just a technicality. This extends to populations counted by a random characteristic.
In this paper we prove a strong law of large numbers and its L^1-convergence counterpart for the process counted with a random characteristic in the context of self-similar fragmentation processes. This result extends a somewhat analogical result by Nerman for general branching processes to fragmentation processes. In addition, we apply the general result of this paper to a specific example that in particular extends a limit theorem, concerning the fragmentation energy, by Bertoin and Martínez from L^1-convergence to almost sure convergence. Our approach treats fragmentation processes with an …
