This paper is concerned with the asymptotic behavior of sums of terms which are a test function f evaluated at successive increments of a discretely sampled semimartingale. Typically the test function is a power function (when the power is 2 we get the realized quadratic variation) . We prove a variety of ``laws of large numbers'', that is convergence in probability of these sums, sometimes after normalization. We also exhibit in many cases the rate of convergence, as well as associated central limit theorems.
We prove that typical (in the model-free finance setting) price paths with jumps may be uniformly approximated with accuracy $c>0$ by paths whose total variation is of order $1/c.$ A more precise result is obtained for semimartingales with jumps.
A Milstein-type scheme was proposed to improve the rate of convergence of its approximation of the solution to a stochastic differential equation driven by a vector of continuous semimartingales. A necessary and sufficient condition was provided for this rate to be $1/n$ when the SDE is driven by a vector of continuous local martingales, or continuous semimartingales under an additional assumption on their finite variation part. The asymptotic behavior (weak convergence) of the normalized error processes was also studied.
We study the short-time asymptotics of conditional expectations of smooth and non-smooth functions of a (discontinuous) Ito semimartingale; we compute the leading term in the asymptotics in terms of the local characteristics of the semimartingale. We derive in particular the asymptotic behavior of call options with short maturity in a semimartingale model: whereas the behavior of \textit{out-of-the-money} options is found to be linear in time, the short time asymptotics of \textit{at-the-money} options is shown to depend on the fine structure of the semimartingale.
In this paper we examine the asymptotic theory for U-statistics and V-statistics of discontinuous Ito semimartingales that are observed at high frequency. For different types of kernel functions we show laws of large numbers and associated stable central limit theorems. In most of the cases the limiting process will be conditionally centered Gaussian. The structure of the kernel function determines whether the jump and/or the continuous part of the semimartingale contribute to the limit.
In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of sums of functions of the increments of a given semimartingale, taken along a regular grid whose mesh goes to 0. The function of the $i$th increment may depend on the current time, and also on the past of the semimartingale before this time. We study the convergence in probability of two types of such sums, and we also give associated central limit theorems. This extends known results when the summands are a function depending only on the increments, and this is motivated mainly by statistical applications.
This paper derives the asymptotic behavior of realized power variation of pure-jump Itô semimartingales as the sampling frequency within a fixed interval increases to infinity. We prove convergence in probability and an associated central limit theorem for the realized power variation as a function of its power. We apply the limit theorems to propose an efficient adaptive estimator for the activity of discretely-sampled Itô semimartingale over a fixed interval.
The semimartingale stochastic approximation procedure, namely, the Robbins-Monro type SDE is introduced which naturally includes both generalized stochastic approximation algorithms with martingale noises and recursive parameter estimation procedures for statistical models associated with semimartingales. General results concerning the asymptotic behaviour of the solution are presented. In particular, the conditions ensuring the convergence, rate of convergence and asymptotic expansion are established. The results concerning the Polyak weighted averaging procedure are also presented.
We introduce a class of continuous planar processes, called "semimartingales on rays", and develop for them a change-of-variable formula involving quite general classes of test functions. Special cases of such planar processes are diffusions which choose, once they reach the origin, the rays for their subsequent voyage according to a fixed probability measure in the manner of Walsh (1978). We develop existence and uniqueness results up to an explosion time for these "Walsh diffusions", study their asymptotic behavior, and develop tests for explosions in finite time. We use these results to fin…
We delve deeper into the study of semimartingale attractors that we recently introduced in Allouba and Langa \cite{AL0}. In this article we focus on second order SPDEs of the Allen-Cahn type. After proving existence, uniqueness, and detailed regularity results for our SPDEs and a corresponding random PDE of Allen-Cahn type, we prove the existence of semimartingale global attractors for these equations. We also give some results on the finite dimensional asymptotic behavior of the solutions. In particular, we show the finite fractal dimension of this random attractor and give a result on determ…
We consider a square-integrable semimartingale and investigate the convex order relations between its discrete, continuous and predictable quadratic variation. As the main results, we show that if the semimartingale has conditionally independent increments and symmetric jump measure, then its discrete realized variance dominates its quadratic variation in increasing convex order. The results have immediate applications to the pricing of options on realized variance. For a class of models including time-changed Levy models and Sato processes with symmetric jumps our results show that options on…
In this paper we present the asymptotic analysis of the realised quadratic variation for multivariate symmetric $β$-stable Lévy processes, $β\in (0,2)$, and certain pure jump semimartingales. The main focus is on derivation of functional limit theorems for the realised quadratic variation and its spectrum. We will show that the limiting process is a matrix-valued $β$-stable Lévy process when the original process is symmetric $β$-stable, while the limit is conditionally $β$-stable in case of integrals with respect to symmetric $β$-stable motions. These asymptotic results are mostly related to t…
This work is concerned with tests on structural breaks in the spot volatility process of a general Itô semimartingale based on discrete observations contaminated with i.i.d. microstructure noise. We construct a consistent test building up on infill asymptotic results for certain functionals of spectral spot volatility estimates. A weak limit theorem is established under the null hypothesis relying on extreme value theory. We prove consistency of the test and of an associated estimator for the change point. A simulation study illustrates the finite-sample performance of the method and efficienc…
In this paper, the weak convergence about the discretization error of stochastic iterated integrals in the Skorohod sense are studied, while the integrands and integrators of iterated integrals are supposed to be semimartingales with jumps. We explored the rate of convergence of its approximation based on the asymptotic behaviors of the associated normalized error and obtained that the rate is $1/n$ when the driving process is semimartingale with a nonvanishing continuous martingale component. As an application, we also studied the discretization of the Doléans-Dade exponential.
This paper presents the asymptotic theory for nondegenerate $U$-statistics of high frequency observations of continuous Itô semimartingales. We prove uniform convergence in probability and show a functional stable central limit theorem for the standardized version of the $U$-statistic. The limiting process in the central limit theorem turns out to be conditionally Gaussian with mean zero. Finally, we indicate potential statistical applications of our probabilistic results.
We consider the moderate deviations behaviors for two (co-) volatility estima-tors: generalised bipower variation, Hayashi-Yoshida estimator. The results are obtained by using a new result about the moderate deviations principle for m-dependent random variables based on the Chen-Ledoux type condition. In the last decade there has been a considerable development of the asymptotic theory for processes observed at a high frequency. This was mainly motivated by financial applications , where the data, such as stock prices or currencies, are observed very frequently. As under the no-arbitrage assum…
This paper studies the asymptotic behavior of processes with switching. More precisely, the stability under fast switching for diffusion processes and discrete state space Markovian processes is considered. The proofs are based on semimartingale techniques, so that no Markovian assumption for the modulating process is needed.
In an incomplete model, where under an appropriate numéraire, the stock price process is driven by a sigma-bounded semimartingale, we investigate the behavior of the expected utility maximization problem under small perturbations of the numéraire. We establish a quadratic approximation of the value function and a first-order expansion of the terminal wealth. Relying on a description of the base return process in terms of its semimartingale characteristics, we also construct wealth processes and nearly optimal strategies that allow for matching the primal value function up to the second order. …
In this paper we provide an asymptotic analysis of generalised bipower measures of the variation of price processes in financial economics. These measures encompass the usual quadratic variation, power variation and bipower variations which have been highlighted in recent years in financial econometrics. The analysis is carried out under some rather general Brownian semimartingale assumptions, which allow for standard leverage effects.
The choice of admissible trading strategies in mathematical modelling of financial markets is a delicate issue, going back to Harrison and Kreps (1979). In the context of optimal portfolio selection with expected utility preferences this question has been a focus of considerable attention over the last twenty years. We propose a novel notion of admissibility that has many pleasant features - admissibility is characterized purely under the objective measure; each admissible strategy can be approximated by simple strategies using finite number of trading dates; the wealth of any admissible strat…
We study asymptotic normality of the randomized periodogram estimator of quadratic variation in the mixed Brownian--fractional Brownian model. In the semimartingale case, that is, where the Hurst parameter $H$ of the fractional part satisfies $H\in(3/4,1)$, the central limit theorem holds. In the nonsemimartingale case, that is, where $H\in(1/2,3/4]$, the convergence toward the normal distribution with a nonzero mean still holds if $H=3/4$, whereas for the other values, that is, $H\in(1/2,3/4)$, the central convergence does not take place. We also provide Berry--Esseen estimates for the estima…
We consider the economic problem of optimal consumption and investment with power utility. We study the optimal strategy as the relative risk aversion tends to infinity or to one. The convergence of the optimal consumption is obtained for general semimartingale models while the convergence of the optimal trading strategy is obtained for continuous models. The limits are related to exponential and logarithmic utility. To derive these results, we combine approaches from optimal control, convex analysis and backward stochastic differential equations (BSDEs).
This paper presents new results on the Edgeworth expansion for high frequency functionals of continuous diffusion processes. We derive asymptotic expansions for weighted functionals of the Brownian motion and apply them to provide the second order Edgeworth expansion for power variation of diffusion processes. Our methodology relies on martingale embedding, Malliavin calculus and stable central limit theorems for semimartingales. Finally, we demonstrate the density expansion for studentized statistics of power variations.
Kramkov and Sirbu (2006, 2007) have shown that first-order approximations of power utility-based prices and hedging strategies can be computed by solving a mean-variance hedging problem under a specific equivalent martingale measure and relative to a suitable numeraire. In order to avoid the introduction of an additional state variable necessitated by the change of numeraire, we propose an alternative representation in terms of the original numeraire. More specifically, we characterize the relevant quantities using semimartingale characteristics similarly as in Cerny and Kallsen (2007) for mea…
We determine the asymptotic behavior of the realized power variations, or more generally of sums of a given test function evaluated at the successive increments of a Lévy process. One can completely elucidate the first order behavior (convergence in probability, possibly after normalization). As for the associated CLT, one can show some versions of it, but only in a limited number of cases. In some other cases, a CLT just does not exist.
We consider the pricing of derivatives written on the discretely sampled realized variance of an underlying security. In the literature, the realized variance is usually approximated by its continuous-time limit, the quadratic variation of the underlying log-price. Here, we characterize the small-time limits of options on both objects. We find that the difference between them strongly depends on whether or not the stock price process has jumps. Subsequently, we propose two new methods to evaluate the price of options on the discretely sampled realized variance. One of the methods is approximat…
In this article we study the asymptotic behaviour of the realized quadratic variation of a process $\int_{0}^{t}u_{s}dG^{H}_{s}$, where $u$ is a $β$-Hölder continuous process with $β>1-H$ and $G^H$ is a self-similar Gaussian process with parameters $H\in(0,3/4)$. We prove almost sure convergence uniformly in time, and a stable weak convergence for the realized quadratic variation. As an application, we construct strongly consistent estimator for the integrated volatility parameter in a model driven by $G^H$.
In this paper we investigate the long time behavior of solutions to fractional in time evolution equations which appear as results of random time changes in Markov processes. We consider inverse subordinators as random times and use the subordination principle for the solutions to forward Kolmogorov equations. The class of subordinators for which asymptotic analysis may be realized is described.
