We address the question of existence of nonconstant stable stationary solution to the heat equation on a class of convex domains subject to nonlinear boundary flux involving a positive parameter. Such solutions which were known to exist in dumbbell-type domains and not to exist in $N$-dimensional balls are shown to exist in some convex domains obtained by smoothing out, in a convenient way, the edges and corners of a cube. Therefore convexity of the domain is not a necessary condition for nonexistence of this type of solutions. If the parameter is small enough we prove that the only equilibria are the constant ones by using the Implicit Function Theorem in a special setting. Symmetry inheritance by local minimizers from symmetry properties of the domain is also addressed.
We compute the lamination convex hull of the stationary IPM equations. We also show in bounded domains that for subsolutions of stationary IPM taking values in the lamination convex hull, velocity vanishes identically and density depends only on height. We relate the results to the infinite time limit of non-stationary IPM.
We consider the flat flow solutions of the mean curvature equation with a forcing term in the plane. We prove that for every constant forcing term the stationary sets are given by a finite union of disks with equal radii and disjoint closures. On the other hand for every bounded forcing term tangent disks are never stationary. Finally in the case of an asymptotically constant forcing term we show that the only possible long time limit sets are given by disjoint unions of disks with equal radii and possibly tangent.
In the present work, we adopt the idea of velocity averaging lemma to establish regularity for stationary linearized Boltzmann equations in a bounded convex domain. Considering the incoming data, with three iterations, we establish regularity in fractional Sobolev space in space variable up to order $1^-$.
We give a lower bound for the Gaussian curvature of convex level sets of minimal graphs and the solutions to semilinear elliptic equations with the norm of boundary gradient and the Gaussian curvature of the boundary.
The curvature estimates of quotient curvature equation do not always exist even for convex setting \cite{GRW}. Thus it is natural question to find other type of elliptic equations possessing curvature estimates. In this paper, we discuss the existence of curvature estimate for fully nonlinear elliptic equations defined by symmetric polynomials, mainlly, the linear combination of elementary symmetric polynomials.
We investigate the regularity issue for the diffuse reflection boundary problem to the stationary linearized Boltzmann equation for hard sphere potential, cutoff hard potential, or cutoff Maxwellian molecular gases in a strictly convex bounded domain. We obtain pointwise estimates for first derivatives of the solution provided the boundary temperature is bounded differentiable and the solution is bounded. This result can be understood as a stationary version of the velocity averaging lemma and mixture lemma.
We study a variant of the mean curvature flow for closed, convex hypersurfaces where the normal velocity is a nonhomogeneous function of the principal curvatures. We show that if the initial hypersurface satisfies a certain pinching condition, then this is preserved and the flow converges to a sphere under rescaling.
We establish $C^2$ a priori estimate for convex hypersurfaces whose principal curvatures $κ=(κ_1,..., κ_n)$ satisfying Weingarten curvature equation $σ_k(κ(X))=f(X,ν(X))$. We also obtain such estimate for admissible 2-convex hypersurfaces in the case $k=2$. Our estimates resolve a longstanding problem in geometric fully nonlinear elliptic equations.
In this paper, we give an example of a compact mean-convex hypersurface with a single singular point moved by mean curvature having a sequence of singular epochs (times) converging to zero.
We consider the flat flow approach for the mean curvature equation with forcing in an Euclidean space $\mathbb R^n$ of dimension at least 2. Our main results states that tangential balls in $\mathbb R^n$ under any flat flow with a bounded forcing term will experience fattening, which generalizes the result by Fusco, Julin and Morini from the planar case to higher dimensions. Then, as in the planar case, we are able to characterize stationary sets in $\mathbb R^n$ for a constant forcing term as finite unions of equisized balls with mutually positive distance.
We consider the volume preserving geometric evolution of the boundary of a set under fractional mean curvature. We show that smooth convex solutions maintain their fractional curvatures bounded for all times, and the long time asymptotics approach round spheres. The proofs are based on apriori estimates on the inner and outer radii of the solutions.
For the $p$-harmonic function with strictly convex level sets, we find a test function which comes from the combination of the norm of gradient of the $p$-harmonic function and the smallest principal curvature of the level sets of $p$-harmonic function. We prove that this curvature function is convex with respect to the height of the $p$-harmonic function. This test function is an affine function of the height when the $p$-harmonic function is the $p$-Green function on the ball. For the minimal graph, we obtain a similar results.
In this note we analyze the Almgren-Taylor-Wang scheme for mean curvature flow in the case of mean convex initial conditions. We show that the scheme preserves strict mean convexity and, by compensated compactness techniques, that the arrival time functions converge strictly in \(BV\). In particular, this establishes the convergence of the time-integrated perimeters of the approximations. As a corollary, the conditional convergence result of Luckhaus-Sturzenhecker becomes unconditonal in the mean convex case.
Given a mean-convex domain $Ω\subset \R^n$ with boundary of class $C^{2,1}$, we provide a representation formula for a boundary integral of the type \[ \int_{\partial Ω} f(k(x)) \, d\mathcal{H}^{n-1} \] where $k\geq 0$ is the mean curvature of $\partial Ω$ and $f$ is non-increasing and sufficiently regular, in terms of volume integrals and defect measure on the ridge set.
We prove some estimates for convex ancient solutions (the existence time for the solution starts from $-\infty$) to the power-of-mean curvature flow, when the power is strictly greater than 1/2. As an application, we prove that in two dimension, the blow-down of the entire convex translating solution, namely $u_{h}=\frac{1}{h}u(h^{\frac{1}{1+α}}x),$ locally uniformly converges to $\frac{1}{1+α}|x|^{1+α}$ as $h\rightarrow\infty$. Another application is that for generalized curve shortening flow (convex curve evolving in its normal direction with speed equal to a power of its curvature), if the …
For the minimal graph with strict convex level sets, we find an auxiliary function to study the Gaussian curvature of the level sets. We prove that this curvature function is a concave function with respect to the height of the minimal surface while this auxiliary function is almost sharp when the minimal surface is the Catenoid.
We consider convex hypersurfaces for which the ratio of principal curvatures at each point is bounded by a function of the maximum principal curvature with limit 1 at infinity. We prove that the ratio of circumradius to inradius is bounded by a function of the circumradius with limit 1 at zero. We apply this result to the motion of hypersurfaces by arbitrary speeds which are smooth homogeneous functions of the principal curvatures of degree greater than one. For smooth, strictly convex initial hypersurfaces with ratio of principal curvatures sufficiently close to one at each point, we prove th…
In this paper, we establish the curvature estimates for $p$-convex hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ of prescribed curvature with $p\geq \frac{n}{2}$. The existence of a star-shaped hypersurface of prescribed curvature is obtained. We also prove a type of interior $C^2$ estimates for solutions to the Dirichlet problem of the corresponding equation.
For a sequence of immersed connected closed Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian submaniolds in $\mathbb{C}^{n}$ with uniform bounds on their volumes and the total extrinsic curvatures, we prove that a subsequence converges either to a point or to a Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian $n$-varifold locally uniformly in $C^{k}$ for any nonnegative integer $k$ away from a finite set of points, and the limit is Hamiltonian stationary in ${\mathbb{C}}^{n}$. We also obtain a theorem on extending Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian submanifolds $L$ across a compact set $N$ of Hausdorff codimension at least …
In this paper, we study the Dirichlet problem for $p$-convex hypersurfaces with prescribed curvature. We prove that there exists a graphic hypersurface satisfying the prescribed curvature equation with homogeneous boundary condition. An interior curvature estimate is also obtained.
For the minimal graph defined on a convex ring in the space form with nonnegative curvature, we obtain the regularity and the strict convexity about its level sets by the continuity method.
In this paper, we establish a curvature estimate for semi-convex solutions of Hessian equations in hyperbolic space. We also obtain a curvature estimate for admissible solutions to prescribed curvature measure type problem in hyperbolic space. A crucial ingredient in both estimates is a concavity inequality for Hessian operator.
We prove the existence of closed convex ancient solutions to curvature flows which become more and more oval for large negative times. The speed function is a general symmetric function of the principal curvatures, homogeneous of degree greater than one. This generalises previous work on the mean curvature flow and other one-homogeneous curvature flows. As an auxiliary result, we prove a new theorem on the convergence to a round point of convex rotationally symmetric hypersurfaces satisfying a suitable constraint on the curvatures.
In this note we announce results on the mean curvature flow of mean convex sets in 3-dimensions. Loosely speaking, our results justify the naive picture of mean curvature flow where the only singularities are neck pinches, and components which collapse to asymptotically round spheres.
In this paper, the $q$-th dual curvature measure is extended to convex functions and the associated Minkowski problem is posed. A special case includes the $q$-th dual curvature measure of convex bodies which defined by Huang, Lutwak, Yang and Zhang. Existence for the functional dual Minkowski problem is showed when $q\leq0$ and the uniqueness part is obtained with some assumptions.
This paper is devoted to $C^2$ a priori estimates for strictly locally convex radial graphs with prescribed Weingarten curvature and boundary in space forms. By constructing two-step continuity process and applying degree theory arguments, existence results in space forms are established for prescribed Gauss curvature equation under the assumption of a strictly locally convex subsolution.
We consider the mean curvature flow of compact convex surfaces in Euclidean $3$-space with free boundary lying on an arbitrary convex barrier surface with bounded geometry. When the initial surface is sufficiently convex, depending only on the geometry of the barrier, the flow contracts the surface to a point in finite time. Moreover, the solution is asymptotic to a shrinking half-sphere lying in a half space. This extends, in dimension two, the convergence result of Stahl for umbilic barriers to general convex barriers. We introduce a new perturbation argument to establish fundamental convexi…
We prove partial regularity of stationary solutions and minimizers $u$ from a set $Ω\subset \mathbb R^n$ to a Riemannian manifold $N$, for the functional $\int_ΩF(x,u,|\nabla u|^2) dx$. The integrand $F$ is convex and satisfies some ellipticity and boundedness assumptions. We also develop a new monotonicity formula and an $ε$-regularity theorem for such stationary solutions with no restriction on their images. We then use the idea of quantitative stratification to show that the k-th strata of the singular set of such solutions are k-rectifiable.
We establish interior $C^2$ estimates for convex solutions of scalar curvature equation and $σ_2$-Hessian equation. We also prove interior curvature estimate for isometrically immersed hypersurfaces $(M^n,g)\subset \mathbb R^{n+1}$ with positive scalar curvature. These estimates are consequences of an interior estimate for these equations obtained under a weakened condition.
We consider compact convex hypersurfaces contracting by functions of their curvature. Under the mean curvature flow, uniformly convex smooth initial hypersurfaces evolve to remain smooth and uniformly convex, and contract to points after finite time. The same holds if the initial data is only weakly convex or non-smooth, and the limiting shape at the final time is spherical. We provide a surprisingly large family of flows for which such results fail, by a variety of mechanisms: Uniformly convex hypersurfaces may become non-convex, and smooth ones may develop curvature singularities; even where…
This article studies the mean curvature flow of Lagrangian submanifolds. In particular, we prove the following global existence and convergence theorem: if the potential function of a Lagrangian graph in T^{2n} is convex, then the flow exists for all time and converges smoothly to a flat Lagrangian submanifold.
We prove a complete family of `cylindrical estimates' for solutions of a class of fully non-linear curvature flows, generalising the cylindrical estimate of Huisken-Sinestrari for the mean curvature flow. More precisely, we show that, for the class of flows considered, an $(m+1)$-convex ($0\leq m\leq n-2$) solution becomes either strictly $m$-convex, or its Weingarten map approaches that of a cylinder $\R^m\times S^{n-m}$ at points where the curvature is becoming large. This result complements the convexity estimate proved by the authors and McCoy for the same class of flows.
Lagrangian submanifolds of a Kaehler manifold are called Hamiltonian-stationary (or $H$-stationary for short) if it is a critical point of the area functional restricted to compactly supported Hamiltonian variations. In [B. Y. Chen, F. Dillen, L. Verstraelen and L. Vrancken, Lagrangian isometric immersions of a real-space-form $M^{n}(c)$ into a complex-space-form $\tilde{M}^{n}(4c)$, Math. Proc. Cambridge Philo. Soc. 124 (1998), 107-125], an effective method to constructing Lagrangian submanifolds of constant curvature $\varepsilon$ in complex space form $M^n(4\varepsilon)$ was introduced. In …
Guan-Ren-Wang established the curvature estimate of convex hypersurface satisfying the Weingarten curvature equation $σ_{k}(κ(X)) = f(X,ν(X))$. In this note, we give a simple proof of this result.
A well-known question of Perelman concerns the classification of noncompact ancient solutions to the Ricci flow in dimension $3$ which have positive sectional curvature and are $κ$-noncollapsed. In this paper, we solve the analogous problem for mean curvature flow in $\mathbb{R}^3$, and prove that the rotationally symmetric bowl soliton is the only noncompact ancient solution of mean curvature flow in $\mathbb{R}^3$ which is strictly convex and noncollapsed.
We obtain $C^2$ a priori estimates for solutions of the nonlinear second-order elliptic equation related to the geometric problem of finding a strictly locally convex hypersurface with prescribed curvature and boundary in a space form. Under the assumption of a strictly locally convex subsolution, we establish existence results by using degree theory arguments.
We consider graphical solutions to mean curvature flow and obtain a stability result for homothetically expanding solutions coming out of cones of positive mean curvature: If another solution is initially close to the cone at infinity, then the difference to the homothetically expanding solution becomes small for large times. The proof involves the construction of appropriate barriers.
A possible evolution of a compact hypersurface in R^n by mean curvature past singularities is defined via the level set flow. In the case that the initial hypersurface has positive mean curvature, we show that the Brakke flow associated to the level set flow is actually a Brakke flow with equality. We obtain as a consequence that no mass drop can occur along such a flow. As a further application of the techniques used above we give a new variational formulation for mean curvature flow of mean convex hypersurfaces.
In this paper, we consider a fully nonlinear curvature flow of a convex hypersurface in the Euclidean n-space. This flow involves k-th elementary symmetric function for principal curvature radii and a function of support function. Under some appropriate assumptions, we prove the long-time existence and convergence of this flow. As an application, we give the existence of smooth solutions to the Orlicz-Christoffel-Minkowski problem.
In this paper we consider a class of weighted-volume preserving curvature flows acting on hypersurfaces that are trapped within two parallel hyperplanes and satisfy an orthogonal boundary condition. In the author's thesis the stability of cylinders under the flows was considered; it was found that they are stable provided the radius satisfies a certain condition. Here we consider flows where there is a critical radius such that the cylinders are only stable on one side of the critical value, and the weight function is a linear combination of the elementary symmetric functions, the reason for s…
In the last 15 years, White and Huisken-Sinestrari developed a far-reaching structure theory for the mean curvature flow of mean convex hypersurfaces. Their papers provide a package of estimates and structural results that yield a precise description of singularities and of high curvature regions in a mean convex flow. In the present paper, we give a new treatment of the theory of mean convex (and k-convex) flows. This includes: (1) an estimate for derivatives of curvatures, (2) a convexity estimate, (3) a cylindrical estimate, (4) a global convergence theorem, (5) a structure theorem for anci…
We prove some Liouville type theorems on smooth compact Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative sectional curvature and strictly convex boundary. This gives a nonlinear generalization in low dimension of the recent sharp lower bound of the first Steklov eigenvalue by Xia-Xiong and verifies partially a conjecture by the third author. As a consequence, we derive several sharp Sobolev trace inequalities on these manifolds.
In this paper, we prove the existence of smooth, entire, strictly convex, spacelike, constant $σ_k$ curvature hypersurfaces with prescribed lightlike directions in Minkowski space. This is equivalent to prove the existence of smooth, entire, strictly convex, spacelike, constant $σ_k$ curvature hypersurfaces with prescribed Gauss map image. We also show that there doesn't exist any entire, convex, strictly spacelike, constant $σ_k$ curvature hypersurfaces. Moreover, we generalize the result in \cite{RWX} and construct strictly convex, spacelike, constant $σ_k$ curvature hypersurface with bounde…
We consider a variational scheme for the anisotropic (including crystalline) mean curvature flow of sets with strictly positive anisotropic mean curvature. We show that such condition is preserved by the scheme, and we prove the strict convergence in BV of the time-integrated perimeters of the approximating evolutions, extending a recent result of De Philippis and Laux to the anisotropic setting. We also prove uniqueness of the flat flow obtained in the limit.
We show the existence of a smooth solution for the flow deformed by the square root of the scalar curvature multiplied by a positive anisotropic factor $ψ$ given a strictly convex initial hypersurface in Euclidean space suitably pinched. We also prove the convergence of rescaled surfaces to a smooth limit manifold which is a round sphere. In dimension two, it is shown that, with a volume preserving rescaling, the limit profile satisfies a soliton equation.
Higher regularity estimate has been a challenging question for the Boltzmann equation in bounded domains. Indeed, it is well-known to have "the non-existence of a second order derivative at the boundary" in [15] even for symmetric convex domains such as a disk or sphere. In this paper we answer this question in the affirmative by constructing the $C^{1,β}$ solutions away from the grazing boundary, for any $β<1$, to the stationary Boltzmann equation with the non-isothermal diffuse boundary condition in strictly convex domains, as long as a smooth wall temperature has small fluctuation pointwise…
We study the existence and stability of stationary solutions of Poisson-Nernst- Planck equations with steric effects (PNP-steric equations) with two counter-charged species. These equations describe steady current through open ionic channels quite well. The current levels in open ionic channels are known to switch between `open' or `closed' states in a spontaneous stochastic process called gating, suggesting that their governing equations should give rise to multiple stationary solutions that enable such multi-stable behavior. We show that within a range of parameters, steric effects give rise…
