In the present work, we adopt the idea of velocity averaging lemma to establish regularity for stationary linearized Boltzmann equations in a bounded convex domain. Considering the incoming data, with three iterations, we establish regularity in fractional Sobolev space in space variable up to order $1^-$.
We prove new velocity averaging lemmas for multi-dimensional hyperbolic-parabolic partial differential equations. These theorems may be applied to establish several compactness results for both deterministic and stochastic convection-diffusion equations. Among the strengths of our theory is the criticality of the source term, which may include spatial derivatives of second order and stochastic noises.
We introduce a commutator method with multipliers to prove averaging lemmas, the regularizing effect for the velocity average of solutions for kinetic equations. This method requires only elementary techniques in Fourier analysis and shows a new range of assumptions that are sufficient for the velocity average to be in $L^2([0,T],H^{1/2}_x).$ This result not only shows an interesting connection between averaging lemmas and local smoothing property of dispersive equations, but also provide a direct proof for the regularizing effect for the measure-valued solutions of scalar conservation laws in…
The purpose of this note is to extend the $L^1$ averaging lemma of Golse and Saint-Raymond \cite{GolSR} to the case of a kinetic transport equation with a force field $F(x)\in W^{1,\infty}$. To this end, we will prove a local in time mixing property for the transport equation $\partial_t f + v.\nabla_x f + F.\nabla_v f =0$.
We obtain several averaging lemmas for transport operator with a force term. These lemmas improve the regularity yet known by not considering the force term as part of an arbitrary right-hand side. Two methods are used: local variable changes or stationary phase. These new results are subjected to two non degeneracy assumptions. We characterize the optimal conditions of these assumptions to compare the obtained regularities according to the space and velocity variables. Our results are mainly in $L^2$, and for constant force, in $L^p$ for $1<p \leq 2$.
This work introduces a new approach to velocity averaging lemmas in kinetic theory. This approach -- based upon the classical energy method -- provides a powerful duality principle in kinetic transport equations which allows for a natural extension of classical averaging lemmas to previously unknown cases where the density and the source term belong to dual spaces. More generally, this kinetic duality principle produces regularity results where one can trade a loss of regularity or integrability somewhere in the kinetic transport equation for a suitable opposite gain elsewhere. Also, it looks …
We develop a class of averaging lemmas for stochastic kinetic equations. The velocity is multiplied by a white noise which produces a remarkable change in time scale. Compared to the deterministic case and as far as we work in $L^2$, the nature of regularity on averages is not changed in this stochastic kinetic equation and stays in the range of fractional Sobolev spaces at the price of an additional expectation. However all the exponents are changed; either time decay rates are slower (when the right hand side belongs to $L^2$), or regularity is better when the right hand side contains deriva…
We prove new velocity averaging results for second-order multidimensional equations of the general form, $\op(\nabla_x,v)f(x,v)=g(x,v)$ where $\op(\nabla_x,v):=\bba(v)\cdot\nabla_x-\nabla_x^\top\cdot\bbb(v)\nabla_x$. These results quantify the Sobolev regularity of the averages, $\int_vf(x,v)ϕ(v)dv$, in terms of the non-degeneracy of the set $\{v: |\op(\ixi,v)|\leq δ\}$ and the mere integrability of the data, $(f,g)\in (L^p_{x,v},L^q_{x,v})$. Velocity averaging is then used to study the \emph{regularizing effect} in quasilinear second-order equations, $\op(\nabla_x,ρ)ρ=S(ρ)$ using their underl…
We develop a new approach to velocity averaging lemmas based on the dispersive properties of the kinetic transport operator. This method yields unprecedented sharp results, which display, in some cases, a gain of one full derivative. Moreover, the study of dispersion allows to treat the case of $L_x^rL^p_v$ integrability with $r\leq p$. We also establish results on the control of concentrations in the degenerate $L_{x,v}^1$ case, which is fundamental in the study of the hydrodynamic limit of the Boltzmann equation.
The paper gives a comprehensive study of inertial manifolds for semilinear parabolic equations and their smoothness using the spatial averaging method suggested by G. Sell and J. Mallet-Paret. We present a universal approach which covers the most part of known results obtained via this method as well as gives a number of new ones. Among our applications are reaction-diffusion equations, various types of generalized Cahn-Hilliard equations, including fractional and 6th order Cahn-Hilliard equations and several classes of modified Navier-Stokes equations including the Leray-$α$ regularization, h…
This paper is dedicated to the application of the DeGiorgi-Nash-Moser regularity theory to the kinetic Fokker-Planck equation. This equation is hypoelliptic. It is parabolic only in the velocity variable, while the Liouville transport operator has a mixing effect in the position/velocity phase space. The mixing effect is incorporated in the classical DeGiorgi method via the averaging lemmas. The result can be seen as a Hölder regularity version of the classical averaging lemmas.
We give a direct harmonic approximation lemma for local minima of quasiconvex multiple integrals that entails their $\mathrm{C}^{1,α}$ or $\mathrm{C}^{\infty}$-partial regularity. Different from previous contributions, the method is fully direct and elementary, only hinging on the $\mathrm{L}^{p}$-theory for strongly elliptic linear systems and Sobolev's embedding theorem. Especially, no heavier tools such as Lipschitz truncations are required.
We investigate the regularity issue for the diffuse reflection boundary problem to the stationary linearized Boltzmann equation for hard sphere potential, cutoff hard potential, or cutoff Maxwellian molecular gases in a strictly convex bounded domain. We obtain pointwise estimates for first derivatives of the solution provided the boundary temperature is bounded differentiable and the solution is bounded. This result can be understood as a stationary version of the velocity averaging lemma and mixture lemma.
In the seminal paper [Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 176 (2005), 351--361], Savin proved the $C^1$-regularity of planar $\infty$-harmonic functions $u$. Here we give a new understanding of it from a capacity viewpoint and drop several high technique arguments therein. Our argument is essentially based on a topological lemma of Savin, a flat estimate by Evans and Smart, % \cite{es11a}, $W^{1,2}_{loc}$-regularity of $|Du|$ and Crandall's flow for infinity harmonic functions.
We consider a linear runs and tumbles equation in dimension d $\ge$ 1 for which we establish the existence of a unique positive and normalized steady state as well as its asymptotic stability, improving similar results obtained by Calvez et al. [5] in dimension d = 1. Our analysis is based on the Krein-Rutman theory revisited in [18] together with some new moment estimates for proving confinement mechanism as well as dispersion, multiplicator and averaging lemma arguments for proving some regularity property of suitable iterated averaging quantities.
We prove that $L^2$ weak solutions to hypoelliptic equations with bounded measurable coefficients are Hölder continuous. The proof relies on classical techniques developed by De Giorgi and Moser together with the averaging lemma and regularity transfers developed in kinetic theory. The latter tool is used repeatedly: first in the proof of the local gain of integrability of sub-solutions; second in proving that the gradient with respect to the velocity variable is $L^{2+ε}_{\mathrm{loc}}$; third, in the proof of an "hypoelliptic isoperimetric De Giorgi lemma." To get such a lemma, we develop a …
This paper gives the first affirmative answer to the question of the global existence of Boltzmann equations without angular cutoff in the $L^\infty$-setting. In particular, we show that when the initial data is close to equilibrium and the perturbation is small in $L^2 \cap L^\infty$ with a polynomial decay tail, the Boltzmann equation has a global solution in the weighted $L^2\cap L^\infty$-space. In order to overcome the difficulties arising from the singular cross-section and the low regularity, a De Giorgi type argument is crafted in the kinetic context with the help of the averaging lemm…
In this note we revisit a less known symmetrization method for functions with respect to a topological group $G$, which we call $G$-averaging. We note that, although quite non-technical in nature, this method yields $G$-invariant minimizers of functionals satisfying some relaxed convexity properties. We give an abstract theorem and show how it can be applied to the $p$-Laplace and polyharmonic Poisson problem in order to construct symmetric solutions. We also pose some open problems and explore further possibilities where the method of $G$-averaging could be applied to.
We establish the global existence of weak solutions to a class of kinetic flocking equations. The models under consideration include the kinetic Cucker-Smale equation with possibly non-symmetric flocking potential, the Cucker-Smale equation with additional strong local alignment, and a newly proposed model by Motsch and Tadmor. The main tools employed in the analysis are the velocity averaging lemma and the Schauder fixed point theorem along with various integral bounds.
We use Velocity Averaging lemma to show that the almost everywhere limit of quasilinear viscous approximations is the unique entropy solution (in the sense of {\it F. Otto}) of the corresponding scalar conservation laws on a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$, where the viscous term is of the form $\varepsilon\,div\left(B(u^{\varepsilon})\nabla u^{\varepsilon}\right)$ and $B\geq 0$.
We prove the existence of weak solutions to kinetic flocking model with cut-off interaction function by using Schauder fixed pointed theorem and velocity averaging lemma. Under the natural assumption that the velocity support of the initial distribution function is bounded, we show that the velocity support of the distribution function is uniformly bounded in time. Employing this property, we remove the constraint in the paper of Karper, Mellet and Trivisa[SIAM. J. Math. Anal., (45)2013, pp.215-243] that the initial distribution function should have better integrability for large $|\bx|$.
In this work, Holder continuity is obtained for solutions to the nonlocal kinetic Fokker-Planck Equation, and to a family of related equations with general integro-differential operators. These equations can be seen as a generalization of the Fokker-Planck Equation, or as a linearization of non-cutoff Boltzmann. Difficulties arise because our equations are hypoelliptic, so we utilize the theory of averaging lemmas. Regularity is obtained using De Giorgi's method, so it does not depend on the regularity of initial conditions or coefficients. This work assumes stronger constraints on the nonloca…
In this paper, we consider the global well-posedness to the non-cutoff Boltzmann equation with soft potential in the $L^\infty$ setting. We show that when the initial data is close to equilibrium and the perturbation is small in $L^2 \cap L^\infty$ polynomial weighted space, the Boltzmann equation has a global solution in the weighted $L^2 \cap L^\infty$ space. The ingredients of the proof lie in strong averaging lemma, new polynomial weighted estimate for the non-cutoff Boltzmann equation and the $L^2$ level set Di Giorgi iteration method developed in \cite{AMSY2}. The convergence to the equi…
We study the well-posedness and regularity theory for the Radiative Transfer equation in the peaked regime posed in the half-space. An average lemma for the transport equation in the half-space is stablished and used to generate interior regularity for solutions of the model. The averaging also shows a fractional regularization gain up to the boundary for the spatial derivatives.
The purpose of this paper is to study the evolution of moving interacting particles on the mesoscopic scale. We will introduce an uncertainty principle and a new priori bound for the evolution of particles subject to a general mesoscopic interaction and use this setting to demonstrate evidence for the universal dispersion of particles in the absence of the conventional methods like velocity averaging lemmas or Strichartz-type estimates. We will develop a scattering theory in generality and use its frame work to show the existence and uniqueness of a class scattering solutions to the Boltzmann …
