We obtain several averaging lemmas for transport operator with a force term. These lemmas improve the regularity yet known by not considering the force term as part of an arbitrary right-hand side. Two methods are used: local variable changes or stationary phase. These new results are subjected to two non degeneracy assumptions. We characterize the optimal conditions of these assumptions to compare the obtained regularities according to the space and velocity variables. Our results are mainly in $L^2$, and for constant force, in $L^p$ for $1<p \leq 2$.
We prove new velocity averaging lemmas for multi-dimensional hyperbolic-parabolic partial differential equations. These theorems may be applied to establish several compactness results for both deterministic and stochastic convection-diffusion equations. Among the strengths of our theory is the criticality of the source term, which may include spatial derivatives of second order and stochastic noises.
In the present work, we adopt the idea of velocity averaging lemma to establish regularity for stationary linearized Boltzmann equations in a bounded convex domain. Considering the incoming data, with three iterations, we establish regularity in fractional Sobolev space in space variable up to order $1^-$.
We introduce a commutator method with multipliers to prove averaging lemmas, the regularizing effect for the velocity average of solutions for kinetic equations. This method requires only elementary techniques in Fourier analysis and shows a new range of assumptions that are sufficient for the velocity average to be in $L^2([0,T],H^{1/2}_x).$ This result not only shows an interesting connection between averaging lemmas and local smoothing property of dispersive equations, but also provide a direct proof for the regularizing effect for the measure-valued solutions of scalar conservation laws in…
The purpose of this note is to extend the $L^1$ averaging lemma of Golse and Saint-Raymond \cite{GolSR} to the case of a kinetic transport equation with a force field $F(x)\in W^{1,\infty}$. To this end, we will prove a local in time mixing property for the transport equation $\partial_t f + v.\nabla_x f + F.\nabla_v f =0$.
This work introduces a new approach to velocity averaging lemmas in kinetic theory. This approach -- based upon the classical energy method -- provides a powerful duality principle in kinetic transport equations which allows for a natural extension of classical averaging lemmas to previously unknown cases where the density and the source term belong to dual spaces. More generally, this kinetic duality principle produces regularity results where one can trade a loss of regularity or integrability somewhere in the kinetic transport equation for a suitable opposite gain elsewhere. Also, it looks …
We develop a class of averaging lemmas for stochastic kinetic equations. The velocity is multiplied by a white noise which produces a remarkable change in time scale. Compared to the deterministic case and as far as we work in $L^2$, the nature of regularity on averages is not changed in this stochastic kinetic equation and stays in the range of fractional Sobolev spaces at the price of an additional expectation. However all the exponents are changed; either time decay rates are slower (when the right hand side belongs to $L^2$), or regularity is better when the right hand side contains deriva…
We develop a new approach to velocity averaging lemmas based on the dispersive properties of the kinetic transport operator. This method yields unprecedented sharp results, which display, in some cases, a gain of one full derivative. Moreover, the study of dispersion allows to treat the case of $L_x^rL^p_v$ integrability with $r\leq p$. We also establish results on the control of concentrations in the degenerate $L_{x,v}^1$ case, which is fundamental in the study of the hydrodynamic limit of the Boltzmann equation.
This paper is dedicated to the application of the DeGiorgi-Nash-Moser regularity theory to the kinetic Fokker-Planck equation. This equation is hypoelliptic. It is parabolic only in the velocity variable, while the Liouville transport operator has a mixing effect in the position/velocity phase space. The mixing effect is incorporated in the classical DeGiorgi method via the averaging lemmas. The result can be seen as a Hölder regularity version of the classical averaging lemmas.
We investigate the regularity issue for the diffuse reflection boundary problem to the stationary linearized Boltzmann equation for hard sphere potential, cutoff hard potential, or cutoff Maxwellian molecular gases in a strictly convex bounded domain. We obtain pointwise estimates for first derivatives of the solution provided the boundary temperature is bounded differentiable and the solution is bounded. This result can be understood as a stationary version of the velocity averaging lemma and mixture lemma.
We consider a linear runs and tumbles equation in dimension d $\ge$ 1 for which we establish the existence of a unique positive and normalized steady state as well as its asymptotic stability, improving similar results obtained by Calvez et al. [5] in dimension d = 1. Our analysis is based on the Krein-Rutman theory revisited in [18] together with some new moment estimates for proving confinement mechanism as well as dispersion, multiplicator and averaging lemma arguments for proving some regularity property of suitable iterated averaging quantities.
We prove that $L^2$ weak solutions to hypoelliptic equations with bounded measurable coefficients are Hölder continuous. The proof relies on classical techniques developed by De Giorgi and Moser together with the averaging lemma and regularity transfers developed in kinetic theory. The latter tool is used repeatedly: first in the proof of the local gain of integrability of sub-solutions; second in proving that the gradient with respect to the velocity variable is $L^{2+ε}_{\mathrm{loc}}$; third, in the proof of an "hypoelliptic isoperimetric De Giorgi lemma." To get such a lemma, we develop a …
Given $ρ\in[0,1]$, we consider for $\varepsilon\in(0,1]$ the nonautonomous viscoelastic equation with a singularly oscillating external force $$ \partial_{tt} u-κ(0)Δu - \int_0^\infty κ'(s)Δu(t-s) d s +f(u)=g_{0}(t)+\varepsilon ^{-ρ}g_{1}(t/\varepsilon ) $$ together with the {\it averaged} equation $$ \partial_{tt} u-κ(0)Δu - \int_0^\infty κ'(s)Δu(t-s) d s +f(u)=g_{0}(t). $$ Under suitable assumptions on the nonlinearity and on the external force, the related solution processes $S_\varepsilon(t,τ)$ acting on the natural weak energy space ${\mathcal H}$ are shown to possess uniform attractors $…
This article is devoted to the analysis of semilinear, parabolic, Stochastic Partial Differential Equations, with slow and fast time scales. Asymptotically, an averaging principle holds: the slow component converges to the solution of another semilinear, parabolic, SPDE, where the nonlinearity is averaged with respect to the invariant distribution of the fast process. We exhibit orders of convergence, in both strong and weak senses, in two relevant situations, depending on the spatial regularity of the fast process and on the covariance of the Wiener noise in the slow equation. In a very regul…
We use Velocity Averaging lemma to show that the almost everywhere limit of quasilinear viscous approximations is the unique entropy solution (in the sense of {\it F. Otto}) of the corresponding scalar conservation laws on a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$, where the viscous term is of the form $\varepsilon\,div\left(B(u^{\varepsilon})\nabla u^{\varepsilon}\right)$ and $B\geq 0$.
We show that the inverse problems for a class of kinetic equations can be solved by classical tools in PDE analysis including energy estimates and the celebrated averaging lemma. Using these tools, we give a unified framework for the reconstruction of the absorption coefficient for transport equations in the subcritical and critical regimes. Moreover, we apply this framework to obtain, to the best of our knowledge, the first result in a nonlinear setting. We also extend the result of recovering the scattering coefficient in [14] from 3D to 2D convex domains.
In two recent papers the authors study the existence of weak solutions and the hydrodynamic limit of kinetic flocking equations with strong local alignment. The introduction of a strong local alignment term to model flocking behavior was formally motivated in these papers as a limiting case of an alignment term proposed by Motsch and Tadmor. In this paper, we rigorously justify this limit, and show that the considered equation is indeed a limit of the Motsch-Tadmor model when the radius of interaction goes to zero. The analysis involves velocity averaging lemmas and several $L^p$ estimates.
We establish the existence and uniqueness of local strong pathwise solutions to the stochastic Boussinesq equations with partial diffusion term forced by multiplicative noise on the torus in $\mathbb{R}^{d},d=2,3$. The solution is strong in both PDE and probabilistic sense. In the two dimensional case, we prove the global existence of strong solutions to the Boussinesq equations forced by additive noise using a suitable stochastic analogue of a logarithmic Gronwall's lemma. After the global existence and uniqueness of strong solutions are established, the large deviation principle (LDP) is prov…
Consider weakly nonlinear complex Ginzburg--Landau (CGL) equation of the form: $$ u_t+i(-Δu+V(x)u)=εμΔu+ε\mathcal{P}( u),\quad x\in {R^d}\,, \quad(*) $$ under the periodic boundary conditions, where $μ\geqslant0$ and $\mathcal{P}$ is a smooth function. Let $\{ζ_1(x),ζ_2(x),\dots\}$ be the $L_2$-basis formed by eigenfunctions of the operator $-Δ+V(x)$. For a complex function $u(x)$, write it as $u(x)=\sum_{k\geqslant1}v_kζ_k(x)$ and set $I_k(u)=\frac{1}{2}|v_k|^2$. Then for any solution $u(t,x)$ of the linear equation $(*)_{ε=0}$ we have $I(u(t,\cdot))=const$. In this work it is proved that if …
Time-averages are common observables in analysis of experimental data and numerical simulations of physical systems. We will investigate, from the angle of partial differential equation analysis, some oscillatory geophysical fluid dynamics in three dimensions: Navier-Stokes equations in a fast rotating, spherical shell, and Magnetohydrodynamics subject to strong Coriolis and Lorentz forces. Upon averaging their oscillatory solutions in time, interesting patterns such as zonal flows can emerge. More rigorously, we will prove that, when the restoring forces are strong enough, time-averaged solut…
We establish improved hypoelliptic estimates on the solutions of kinetic transport equations, using a suitable decomposition of the phase space. Our main result shows that the relative compactness in all variables of a bounded family $f_λ(x,v)\in L^p$ satisfying some appropriate transport relation $$v\cdot\nabla_x f_λ= (1-Δ_x)^\fracβ{2}(1-Δ_v)^\fracα{2}g_λ$$ may be inferred solely from its compactness in $v$. This method is introduced as an alternative to the lack of known suitable averaging lemmas in $L^1$ when the right-hand side of the transport equation has very low regularity, due to an e…
