We prove new velocity averaging lemmas for multi-dimensional hyperbolic-parabolic partial differential equations. These theorems may be applied to establish several compactness results for both deterministic and stochastic convection-diffusion equations. Among the strengths of our theory is the criticality of the source term, which may include spatial derivatives of second order and stochastic noises.
In the present work, we adopt the idea of velocity averaging lemma to establish regularity for stationary linearized Boltzmann equations in a bounded convex domain. Considering the incoming data, with three iterations, we establish regularity in fractional Sobolev space in space variable up to order $1^-$.
We introduce a commutator method with multipliers to prove averaging lemmas, the regularizing effect for the velocity average of solutions for kinetic equations. This method requires only elementary techniques in Fourier analysis and shows a new range of assumptions that are sufficient for the velocity average to be in $L^2([0,T],H^{1/2}_x).$ This result not only shows an interesting connection between averaging lemmas and local smoothing property of dispersive equations, but also provide a direct proof for the regularizing effect for the measure-valued solutions of scalar conservation laws in…
The purpose of this note is to extend the $L^1$ averaging lemma of Golse and Saint-Raymond \cite{GolSR} to the case of a kinetic transport equation with a force field $F(x)\in W^{1,\infty}$. To this end, we will prove a local in time mixing property for the transport equation $\partial_t f + v.\nabla_x f + F.\nabla_v f =0$.
We obtain several averaging lemmas for transport operator with a force term. These lemmas improve the regularity yet known by not considering the force term as part of an arbitrary right-hand side. Two methods are used: local variable changes or stationary phase. These new results are subjected to two non degeneracy assumptions. We characterize the optimal conditions of these assumptions to compare the obtained regularities according to the space and velocity variables. Our results are mainly in $L^2$, and for constant force, in $L^p$ for $1<p \leq 2$.
This work introduces a new approach to velocity averaging lemmas in kinetic theory. This approach -- based upon the classical energy method -- provides a powerful duality principle in kinetic transport equations which allows for a natural extension of classical averaging lemmas to previously unknown cases where the density and the source term belong to dual spaces. More generally, this kinetic duality principle produces regularity results where one can trade a loss of regularity or integrability somewhere in the kinetic transport equation for a suitable opposite gain elsewhere. Also, it looks …
We develop a class of averaging lemmas for stochastic kinetic equations. The velocity is multiplied by a white noise which produces a remarkable change in time scale. Compared to the deterministic case and as far as we work in $L^2$, the nature of regularity on averages is not changed in this stochastic kinetic equation and stays in the range of fractional Sobolev spaces at the price of an additional expectation. However all the exponents are changed; either time decay rates are slower (when the right hand side belongs to $L^2$), or regularity is better when the right hand side contains deriva…
We prove new velocity averaging results for second-order multidimensional equations of the general form, $\op(\nabla_x,v)f(x,v)=g(x,v)$ where $\op(\nabla_x,v):=\bba(v)\cdot\nabla_x-\nabla_x^\top\cdot\bbb(v)\nabla_x$. These results quantify the Sobolev regularity of the averages, $\int_vf(x,v)ϕ(v)dv$, in terms of the non-degeneracy of the set $\{v: |\op(\ixi,v)|\leq δ\}$ and the mere integrability of the data, $(f,g)\in (L^p_{x,v},L^q_{x,v})$. Velocity averaging is then used to study the \emph{regularizing effect} in quasilinear second-order equations, $\op(\nabla_x,ρ)ρ=S(ρ)$ using their underl…
We develop a new approach to velocity averaging lemmas based on the dispersive properties of the kinetic transport operator. This method yields unprecedented sharp results, which display, in some cases, a gain of one full derivative. Moreover, the study of dispersion allows to treat the case of $L_x^rL^p_v$ integrability with $r\leq p$. We also establish results on the control of concentrations in the degenerate $L_{x,v}^1$ case, which is fundamental in the study of the hydrodynamic limit of the Boltzmann equation.
This paper is dedicated to the application of the DeGiorgi-Nash-Moser regularity theory to the kinetic Fokker-Planck equation. This equation is hypoelliptic. It is parabolic only in the velocity variable, while the Liouville transport operator has a mixing effect in the position/velocity phase space. The mixing effect is incorporated in the classical DeGiorgi method via the averaging lemmas. The result can be seen as a Hölder regularity version of the classical averaging lemmas.
We consider a diffusive transport equation with discontinuous flux and prove the velocity averaging result under non-degeneracy conditions. In order to achieve the result, we introduce a new variant of micro-local defect functionals which are able to ``recognise'' changes of the type of the equation. As a corollary, we show the existence of a weak solution for the Cauchy problem for nonlinear degenerate parabolic equation with discontinuous flux. We also show existence of strong traces at $t=0$ for so-called quasi-solutions to degenerate parabolic equations under non-degeneracy conditions on t…
We investigate the regularity issue for the diffuse reflection boundary problem to the stationary linearized Boltzmann equation for hard sphere potential, cutoff hard potential, or cutoff Maxwellian molecular gases in a strictly convex bounded domain. We obtain pointwise estimates for first derivatives of the solution provided the boundary temperature is bounded differentiable and the solution is bounded. This result can be understood as a stationary version of the velocity averaging lemma and mixture lemma.
We consider a linear runs and tumbles equation in dimension d $\ge$ 1 for which we establish the existence of a unique positive and normalized steady state as well as its asymptotic stability, improving similar results obtained by Calvez et al. [5] in dimension d = 1. Our analysis is based on the Krein-Rutman theory revisited in [18] together with some new moment estimates for proving confinement mechanism as well as dispersion, multiplicator and averaging lemma arguments for proving some regularity property of suitable iterated averaging quantities.
We prove that $L^2$ weak solutions to hypoelliptic equations with bounded measurable coefficients are Hölder continuous. The proof relies on classical techniques developed by De Giorgi and Moser together with the averaging lemma and regularity transfers developed in kinetic theory. The latter tool is used repeatedly: first in the proof of the local gain of integrability of sub-solutions; second in proving that the gradient with respect to the velocity variable is $L^{2+ε}_{\mathrm{loc}}$; third, in the proof of an "hypoelliptic isoperimetric De Giorgi lemma." To get such a lemma, we develop a …
Assume that $(u_n)$ is a sequence of solutions to heterogeneous equations with rough coefficients and fractional derivatives, weakly converging to zero in ${\rm L}^p(\R^{d+m})$, with $p>1$. We prove that the sequence of averaged quantities $(\int ρ(\my) u_n(\mx,\my) d\my)$ is strongly precompact in $\Ljl\Rd$ for any $ρ\in \Cc{\R^m}$, provided that restrictive non-degeneracy conditions are satisfied. These are fulfilled for elliptic, parabolic, fractional convection-diffusion equations, as well as for parabolic equations with a fractional time derivative. The main tool that we are using is an a…
We use Velocity Averaging lemma to show that the almost everywhere limit of quasilinear viscous approximations is the unique entropy solution (in the sense of {\it F. Otto}) of the corresponding scalar conservation laws on a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$, where the viscous term is of the form $\varepsilon\,div\left(B(u^{\varepsilon})\nabla u^{\varepsilon}\right)$ and $B\geq 0$.
We prove that the sequence of averaged quantities $\int_{\R^m}u_n(\mx,\msnop)$ $ρ(\msnop)d\msnop$, is strongly precompact in $\Ldl\Rd$, where $ρ\in \Ldc{\R^m}$, and $u_n\in \Ld{\R^m; \pL s\Rd}$, $s\geq 2$, are weak solutions to differential operator equations with variable coefficients. In particular, this includes differential operators of hyperbolic, parabolic or ultraparabolic type, but also fractional differential operators. If $s>2$ then the coefficients can be discontinuous with respect to the space variable $\mx\in \R^d$, otherwise, the coefficients are continuous functions. In order to…
The asymptotic analysis of kinetic models describing the behavior of particles interacting through alignment is performed. We will analyze the asymptotic regime corresponding to large alignment frequency where the alignment effects are dominated by the self propulsion and friction forces. The former hypothesis leads to a macroscopic fluid model due to the fast averaging in velocity, while the second one imposes a fixed speed in the limit, and thus a reduction of the dynamics to a sphere in the velocity space. The analysis relies on averaging techniques successfully used in the magnetic confine…
We prove the existence of weak solutions to kinetic flocking model with cut-off interaction function by using Schauder fixed pointed theorem and velocity averaging lemma. Under the natural assumption that the velocity support of the initial distribution function is bounded, we show that the velocity support of the distribution function is uniformly bounded in time. Employing this property, we remove the constraint in the paper of Karper, Mellet and Trivisa[SIAM. J. Math. Anal., (45)2013, pp.215-243] that the initial distribution function should have better integrability for large $|\bx|$.
We prove optimal regularity for solutions to porous media equations in Sobolev spaces, based on velocity averaging techniques. In particular, the obtained regularity is consistent with the optimal regularity in the linear limit.
We establish the well-posedness of an initial-boundary value problem of mixed type for a stochastic nonlinear parabolic-hyperbolic equation on a space domain $\cO=\cO'\X\cO''$ where a Neumann boundary condition is imposed on $\po\cO'\X\cO"$, the hyperbolic boundary, and a Dirichlet condition is imposed on $\cO'\X\po\cO"$, the parabolic boundary. Among other points to be highlighted in our analysis of this problem we mention the new strong trace theorem for the special class of stochastic nonlinear parabolic-hyperbolic equations studied here, which is decisive for the uniqueness of the kinetic …
We establish smoothing estimates in the framework of hyperbolic Sobolev spaces for the velocity averaging operator $ρ$ of the solution of the kinetic transport equation. If the velocity domain is either the unit sphere or the unit ball, then, for any exponents $q$ and $r$, we find a characterisation of the exponents $β_+$ and $β_-$, except possibly for an endpoint case, for which $D_+^{β_+}D_-^{β_-} ρ$ is bounded from space-velocity $L^2_{x,v}$ to space-time $L^q_tL^r_x$. Here, $D_+$ and $D_-$ are the classical and hyperbolic derivative operators, respectively. In fact, we shall provide an arg…
We introduce the notion of pathwise entropy solutions for a class of degenerate parabolic-hyperbolic equations with non-isotropic nonlinearity and fluxes with rough time dependence and prove their well-posedness. In the case of Brownian noise and periodic boundary conditions, we prove that the pathwise entropy solutions converge to their spatial average and provide an estimate on the rate of convergence. The third main result of the paper is a new regularization result in the spirit of averaging lemmata. This work extends both the framework of pathwise entropy solutions for stochastic scalar c…
We provide a rigorous mathematical framework to establish the hydrodynamic limit of the Vlasov model introduced by Noguchi and Takata in order to describe phase transition of fluids by kinetic equations. We prove that, when the scale parameter tends to 0, this model converges to a nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equation with degenerate mobility. For our analysis, we introduce apropriate forms of the short and long range potentials which allow us to derive Helmhotlz free energy estimates. Several compactness properties follow from the energy, the energy dissipation and kinetic averaging lemmas. In part…
We perform the asymptotic analysis of parabolic equations with stiff transport terms. This kind of problem occurs, for example, in collisional gyrokinetic theory for tokamak plasmas, where the velocity diffusion of the collision mechanism is dominated by the velocity advection along the Laplace force corresponding to a strong magnetic field. This work appeal to the filtering techniques. Removing the fast oscillations associated to the singular transport operator, leads to a stable family of profiles. The limit profile comes by averaging with respect to the fast time variable, and still satisfi…
We study the averaging of fronts moving with positive oscillatory normal velocity, which is periodic in space and stationary ergodic in time. The problem can be reformulated as the homogenization of coercive level set Hamilton-Jacobi equations with spatio-temporal oscillations. To overcome the difficulties due to the oscillations in time and the sublinear growth of the Hamiltonian, we first study the long time averaged behavior of the associated reachable sets using geometric arguments. The results are new for higher than one dimensions even in the space-time periodic setting.
A system of drift-diffusion equations with electric field under Dirichlet boundary conditions is analyzed. The system of strongly coupled parabolic equations for particle density and spin density vector describes the spin-polarized semi-classical electron transport in ferromagnetic semiconductors. The presence of a nonconstant and nonsmooth magnetization vector, solution of the Landau-Lifshitz equation, causes the diffusion matrix to be dependent from space and time and to have in general poor regularity properties, thus making the analysis challenging. To partially overcome the analytical dif…
