We have measured the half-life of the electron-capture (ec) decay of 97Ru in a metallic environment, both at low temperature (19K), and also at room temperature. We find the half-lives at both temperatures to be the same within 0.1%. This demonstrates that a recent claim that the ec decay half-life for 7Be changes by $0.9% +/- 0.2% under similar circumstances certainly cannot be generalized to other ec decays. Our results for the half-life of 97Ru, 2.8370(14)d at room temperature and 2.8382(14)d at 19K, are consistent with, but much more precise than, previous room-temperature measurements. In addition, we have also measured the half-lives of the beta-emitters 103Ru and 105Rh at both temperatures, and found them also to be unchanged.
The literature half-life value of 65Ga is based on only one experiment carried out more than 60 years ago and it has a relatively large uncertainty. In the present work this half-life is determined based on the counting of the gamma-rays following the beta-decay of 65Ga. Our new recommended half-life is 15.133 +- 0.028 min which is in agreement with the literature value but almost one order of magnitude more precise.
We have measured the half-life of 30S, the parent of a superallowed 0+-to-0+ beta transition, to high precision using very pure sources and a 4pi proportional gas counter to detect the decay positrons. Our result for the half-life is 1.17992(34) s. As a byproduct of this measurement, we determined the half-life of its daughter, 30P, to be 2.501(2) min.
All existing positive results on two-neutrino double beta decay and two-neutrino double electron capture in different nuclei have been analyzed. Weighted average and recommended half-life values for $^{48}$Ca, $^{76}$Ge, $^{82}$Se, $^{96}$Zr, $^{100}$Mo, $^{100}$Mo - $^{100}$Ru ($0^+_1$), $^{116}$Cd, $^{128}$Te, $^{130}$Te, $^{136}$Xe, $^{150}$Nd, $^{150}$Nd - $^{150}$Sm ($0^+_1$), $^{238}$U, $^{78}$Kr, $^{124}$Xe and $^{130}$Ba have been obtained. Given the measured half-life values, effective nuclear matrix elements for all these transitions were calculated.
The precise knowledge of the half-life of the reaction product is of crucial importance for a nuclear reaction cross section measurement carried out with the activation technique. The cross section of the $^{92}$Mo($α$,n)$^{95}$Ru reaction was measured recently using this experimental approach. The preliminary results indicated that the literature half-life of $^{95}$Ru, derived about half a century ago, is overestimated. Therefore, the half-lives of $^{95}$Ru and its daughter isotope $^{95}$Tc and $^{95m}$Tc have been measured with high precision using $γ$-spectroscopy. The results are t$_{1/…
The half-life of the $^{20}$F ground state has been measured using a radioactive beam implanted in a plastic scintillator and recording $βγ$ coincidences together with four CsI(Na) detectors. The result, $T_{1/2} = 11.0011(69)_{\rm stat}(30)_{\rm sys}$~s, is at variance by 17 combined standard deviations with the two most precise results. The present value revives the poor consistency of results for this half-life and calls for a new measurement, with a technique having different sources of systematic effects, to clarify the discrepancy.
A device with the parent $^{229}$Th source was constructed to search for variations of the daughter $^{213}$Po half-life ($T_{1/2} = 4.2$ $μ$s). A solar-daily variation with amplitude $A_{So}=(5.3 \pm 1.1) \times 10^{-4}$, a lunar-daily variation with amplitude $A_L = (4.8 \pm 2.1) \times 10^{-4}$, and a sidereal-daily variation with amplitude $A_S = (4.2 \pm 1.7) \times 10^{-4}$ were found upon proceeding the data series over a 622-day interval (from July 2015 to March 2017). The $^{213}$Po half-life mean value is found to be $T_{1/2} = 3.705 \pm 0.001$ $μ$s. The obtained half-life is in good…
In order to provide data for the simulation of the astrophysical $γ$-process, the cross section measurement of the $^{124}$Xe(p,$γ$)$^{125}$Cs reaction is in progress at MTA Atomki using the activation technique. Precise information on the decay characteristics of the reaction products is of crucial importance for measurements carried out using this method. The half-lives of the produced $^{125}$Cs and its daughter $^{125}$Xe are published in previous works, but with large uncertainties and ambiguous values. To make these nuclear parameters more precise, the half-lives have been re-measured wi…
All existing positive results on two neutrino double beta decay and two neutrino double electron capture in different nuclei were analyzed. Using the procedure recommended by the Particle Data Group, weighted average values for half-lives of $^{48}$Ca, $^{76}$Ge, $^{82}$Se, $^{96}$Zr, $^{100}$Mo, $^{100}$Mo - $^{100}$Ru ($0^+_1$), $^{116}$Cd, $^{130}$Te, $^{136}$Xe, $^{150}$Nd, $^{150}$Nd - $^{150}$Sm ($0^+_1$), $^{238}$U, $^{78}$Kr and $^{124}$Xe were obtained. Existing geochemical data were analyzed and recommended values for half-lives of $^{128}$Te and $^{130}$Ba are proposed. I recommend …
A search for the double beta decay transition of $^{94}$Zr into the first excited state of $^{94}$Mo has been performed at the Felsenkeller underground laboratory in Dresden, Germany. A 341.1 g zirconium sample with natural isotopic composition has been measured for 43.9 d in an ultra low background gamma spectroscopy setup. No signal has been observed and a new best lower half-life limit is set as $5.2\times10^{19}$ yr (90% CI). This limit is valid for the $0νββ$ and $2νββ$ decay into excited states of $^{94}$Mo but cannot distinguish between the two modes. Existing limits are improved by 50%…
The half-life of $^{6}$He has been measured using a low energy radioactive beam implanted in a YAP scintillator and recording decay events in a 4$π$ geometry. Events were time-stamped with a digital data acquisition system enabling a reliable control of dead-time effects and detector gain variations. The result, $T_{1/2} = (807.25 \pm 0.16_{\rm stat} \pm 0.11_{\rm sys}$)~ms, provides the most precise value obtained so far and is consistent with the only previous measurement having a precision smaller than 0.1%. This resolves the longstanding discrepancy previously observed between two sets of …
We perform coincidence measurements between $α$ particles and $γ$ rays from a $^{233}$U source to determine the half-lives of the excited state in a $^{229}$Th nucleus. We first prove that the half-lives of 42.43- and 164.53-keV states are consistent with literature values, whereas that of the 97.14-keV state (93(7) ps) deviates from a previously measured value (147(12) ps). The half-lives of 71.83- and 163.25-keV states are determined for the first time. Based on the obtained half-lives and the Alaga rule, we estimate the radiative half-life of the low-energy isomeric state ($^{229m}$Th) to b…
Precise measurement of half-life of $^{212}$Po (one of the daughter nuclides in radioactive chain of $^{232}$Th) was realized by means of liquid scintillator based on toluene doped by complex of thorium and trioctylphosphine oxide with concentration of Th $\sim0.1$ mass %. Fast photomultiplier tube and high frequency oscilloscope were used to acquire the scintillation signals waveforms. The algorithms were developed to find pairs of $^{212}$Bi beta-decays and subsequent $^{212}$Po alpha-decays, to calculate time differences between the events in the pair, and to build $^{212}$Bi beta-decay and…
Materials selection for rare event physics requires high performance detectors and customized analyses. In this context a novel $β$-$γ$ detection system, comprised of a liquid scintillator in coincidence with a HPGe, was developed with the main purpose of studying ultra trace contamination of uranium, thorium and potassium in liquid samples. In the search for $^{238}\textrm{U}$ contaminations through neutron activation analysis, since the activation product $^{239}\textrm{Np}$ decays to a relatively long-lived isomeric state of $^{239}\textrm{Pu}$, it is possible to perform a time selection of…

The half-life of the superallowed Fermi $β^+$ emitter $^{14}$O was determined to high precision via a direct $β$ counting experiment performed at the Isotope Separator and Accelerator (ISAC) facility at TRIUMF. The result, $T_{1/2}$($^{14}$O) = 70619.2(76) ms, is consistent with, but is more precise than, the world average obtained from 11 previous measurements. Combining the $^{14}$O half-life deduced in the present work with the previous most precise measurements of this quantity leads to a reduction in the overall uncertainty, by nearly a factor of 2. The new world average is $T_{1/2}$($^{1…
The ground state half-lives of 69Ge, 73Se, 83Sr, 63Zn, and the half-life of the 1/2- isomer in 85Sr have been measured with high precision using the photoactivation technique at an unconventional bremsstrahlung facility that features a repurposed medical electron linear accelerator. The g-ray activity was counted over about 6 half-lives with a high-purity Germanium detector, enclosed into an ultra low-background lead shield. The measured half-lives are: T1/2(69Ge) = 38.82 +/- 0.07 (stat) +/- 0.06 (sys) h; T1/2(73Se) = 7.18 +/- 0.02 (stat) +/- 0.004 (sys) h; T1/2(83Sr) = 31.87 +/- 1.16 (stat) +…
