The half-life of 10C has been measured to be 19.310(4)s, a result with 0.02% precision, which is a factor of three improvement over the best previous result. Since 10C is the lightest superallowed 0+ --> 0+ beta emitter, its ft value has the greatest weight in setting an upper limit on the possible presence of scalar currents.
The Q_EC values of the superallowed beta+ emitters 10-C, 34-Ar, 38-Ca and 46-V have been measured with a Penning-trap mass spectrometer to be 3648.12(8), 6061.83(8), 6612.12(7) and 7052.44(10) keV, respectively. All four values are substantially improved in precision over previous results.
We have measured the half-life of 30S, the parent of a superallowed 0+-to-0+ beta transition, to high precision using very pure sources and a 4pi proportional gas counter to detect the decay positrons. Our result for the half-life is 1.17992(34) s. As a byproduct of this measurement, we determined the half-life of its daughter, 30P, to be 2.501(2) min.
The half-life of 46V has been measured to be 422.66(6) ms, which is a factor of two more precise than the best previous measurement. Our result is also consistent with the previous measurements, with no repeat of the disagreement recently encountered with Q_{EC} values measured for the same transition. The Ft value for the 46V superallowed transition, incorporating all world data, is determined to be 3074.1(26) s, a result consistent with the average Ft value of 3072.08(79) s established from the 13 best-known superallowed transitions.
We have measured the half-life of the superallowed 0+ -to- 0+ beta+ emitter 26Si to be 2245.3(7) ms. We used pure sources of 26Si and employed a high-efficiency gas counter, which was sensitive to positrons from both this nuclide and its daughter 26mAl. The data were analyzed as a linked parent-daughter decay. To contribute meaningfully to any test of the unitarity of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix, the ft value of a superallowed transition must be determined to a precision of 0.1% or better. With a precision of 0.03% the present result is more than sufficient to be compatable with…
A high-precision half-life measurement for the superallowed Fermi $β^+$ emitter $^{22}$Mg was performed at the TRIUMF-ISAC facility using a 4$π$ proportional gas counter. The result of $T_{1/2} = 3.87400 \pm 0.00079$ s is a factor of 3 more precise than the previously adopted world average and resolves a discrepancy between the two previously published $^{22}$Mg half-life measurements.
Using a new fast cleaning procedure to prepare isomerically pure ion samples, we have measured the beta-decay Q_EC values of the superallowed beta-emitters 50Mn and 54Co to be 7634.48(7) keV and 8244.54(10) keV, respectively, results which differ significantly from the previously accepted values. The corrected Ft values derived from our results strongly support new isospin-symmetry-breaking corrections that lead to a higher value of the up-down quark mixing element, Vud, and improved confirmation of the unitarity of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix.
The beta-decay Q_EC-values of the superallowed beta emitters 26m-Al, 42-Sc and 46-V have been measured with a Penning trap to a relative precision of better than 8x10^-9. Our result for 46-V, 7052.72(31) keV, confirms a recent measurement that differed significantly from the previously accepted reaction-based Q_EC-value. However, our results for 26m-Al and 42-Sc, 4232.83(13) keV and 6426.13(21) keV, are consistent with previous reaction-based values. By eliminating the possibility of a systematic difference between the two techniques, this result demonstrates that no significant shift in the d…
The half-life, 3.8755(12) s, and superallowed branching ratio, 0.5315(12), for ^{22}Mg beta-decay have been measured with high precision. The latter depended on gamma-ray intensities being measured with an HPGe detector calibrated for relative efficiencies to an unprecedented 0.15%. Previous precise measurements of 0^+ to 0^+ transitions have been restricted to the nine that populate stable daughter nuclei. No more such cases exist, and any improvement in a critical CKM unitarity test must depend on precise measurements of more exotic nuclei. With this branching-ratio measurement, we show thos…
Masses of the radioactive isotopes 62Ga, 62Zn and 62Cu have been measured at the JYFLTRAP facility with a relative precision of better than 18 ppb. A Q_EC value of (9181.07 +- 0.54) keV for the superallowed decay of 62Ga is obtained from the measured cyclotron frequency ratios of 62Ga-62Zn, 62Ga-62Ni and 62Zn-62Ni ions. The resulting Ft-value supports the validity of the conserved vector current hypothesis (CVC). The mass excess values measured were (-51986.5 +-1.0) keV for 62Ga, (-61167.9 +- 0.9) keV for 62Zn and (-62787.2 +- 0.9) keV for 62Cu.
A direct $Q_{EC}$-value measurement of the superallowed $β^+$ emitter $^{22}$Mg was performed using TRIUMF's Ion Trap for Atomic and Nuclear science (TITAN). The direct ground-state to ground-state atomic mass difference between $^{22}$Mg and $^{22}$Na was determined to be $Q_{EC}=4781.40(22)$~keV, representing the most precise single measurement of this quantity to date. In a continued push towards calculating superallowed isospin-symmetry-breaking (ISB) corrections from first principles, ab-initio shell-model calculations of the $A=22$ IMME are also presented for the first time using the val…
Measurements of the decay strength of superallowed 0+ to 0+ nuclear beta transitions shed light on the fundamental properties of weak interactions. Because of their impact, such measurements were first reported 60 years ago in the early 1950s and have continued unabated ever since, always taking advantage of improvements in experimental techniques to achieve ever higher precision. The results helped first to shape the Electroweak Standard Model but more recently have evolved into sensitively testing that model's predictions. Today they provide the most demanding test of vector-current conserva…
We present a test with which to evaluate the calculated isospin-symmetry-breaking corrections to superallowed 0+-to-0+ nuclear beta decay. The test is based on the corrected experimental Ft values being required to satisfy conservation of the vector current (CVC). When applied to six sets of published calculations, the test demonstrates quantitatively that only one set -- the one based on the shell model with Saxon-Woods radial wave functions -- provides satisfactory agreement with CVC. This test can easily be applied to any sets of calculated correction terms that are produced in future.
We study the formalism to include isospin-symmetry-breaking corrections when extracting the up-down Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element from superallowed 0+ -> 0+ nuclear beta decay. We show that there are no first order isospin-symmetry-breaking corrections to the relevant nuclear matrix elements. We find corrections to the treatment of Towner and Hardy, and assess these using schematic models of increasing complexity.
Data on superallowed Fermi beta decay in nuclei are compiled and electromagnetic corrections discussed. Recommended values for the weak vector coupling constant and the leading element of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa mixing matrix are given. Comments on neutron decay and limits extracted on extensions to the Standard Model are made.
We report the first branching-ratio measurement of the superallowed 0+-to-0+ beta transition from 38Ca. The result, 0.7728(16), leads to an ft value of 3062.3(68)s with a relative precision of +/-0.2%. This makes possible a high-precision comparison of the ft values for the mirror superallowed transitions, 38Ca-to-38mK and 38mK-to-38Ar, which sensitively tests the isospin symmetry-breaking corrections required to extract Vud, the up-down quark-mixing element of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix, from superallowed beta decay. The result supports the corrections currently used, and poin…
Prompted by recent measurements, we have surveyed world data and calculated radiative and isospin-symmetry breaking corrections for the superallowed 0+ -to- 0+ Fermi transitions from 42Ti, 46Cr, 50Fe and 54Ni. This increases the number of such transition with a complete set of calculated corrections from 20 to 23. The results are compared with their equivalents for the mirror superallowed transitions from 42Sc, 46V, 50Mn and 54Co. The predicted ft-value asymmetries of these mirror pairs are sensitive to the correction terms and provide motivation for improving measurement precision so as to be…
Based on an exact formalism, we study the effects of isospin-symmetry-breaking interactions on superallowed 0+ -> 0+ transitions. We calculate the second-order renormalization of the Fermi matrix element due to radial contributions and show that radial excitations neglected in the treatment of Towner and Hardy are significant. These are estimated to decrease the isospin-symmetry-breaking corrections. Our results provide a correction term that can be included in existing approaches.
Two experiments, (1) a measurement of the superallowed $0^{+} \rightarrow 0^{+}$ branching ratio in $^{10}$C, and (2) a measurement of (or limit on) non-analogue $0^{+} \rightarrow 0^{+}$ branches in $^{38m}$K, $^{46}$V, $^{50}$Mn and $^{54}$Co, are described. The implications these experiments have on the test of the conservation of the weak vector current (CVC) and the unitarity of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix are surveyed.
A new critical survey of all world data on superallowed beta decays provides demanding tests of, and tight constraints on, the weak interaction. In confirmation of the conserved vector current (CVC) hypothesis, the vector coupling coupling constant is demonstrated to be constant to better than 3 parts in 10^4, and any induced scalar current is limited to fs \leq 0.0013 in electron rest-mass units. The possible existence of a fundamental scalar current is similarly limited to |Cs/Cv| \leq 0.0013. The superallowed data also determine the CKM matrix element to be Vud = 0.9738(4). With PDG values …
Superallowed $0^+ \to 0^+$ nuclear beta decay provides a direct measure of the weak vector coupling constant, $\GV$. We survey current world data on the nine accurately determined transitions of this type, which range from the decay of $^{10}$C to that of $^{54}$Co, and demonstrate that the results confirm conservation of the weak vector current (CVC) but differ at the 98% confidence level from the unitarity condition for the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix. We examine the reliability of the small calculated corrections that have been applied to the data, and assess the likelihood of ev…
Background: The superallowed beta-decay rates provide stringent constraints on physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. To extract crucial information about the electroweak force, small isospin-breaking corrections to the Fermi matrix element of superallowed transitions must be applied. Purpose: We perform systematic calculations of isospin-breaking corrections to superallowed beta-decays and estimate theoretical uncertainties related to the basis truncation, time-odd polarization effects related to the intrinsic symmetry of the underlying Slater determinants, and to the function…
The measured $ft$-values for superallowed $0^{+} \to 0^{+}$ nuclear $β$-decay can be used to obtain the value of the vector coupling constant and thus to test the unitarity of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix. An essential requirement for this test is accurate calculations for the radiative and isospin symmetry-breaking corrections that must be applied to the experimental data. We present a new and consistent set of calculations for the nuclear-structure-dependent components of these corrections. These new results do not alter the current status of the unitarity test -- it still fails by m…
A recent Penning-trap measurement of the masses of 46V and 46Ti leads to a Qec value that disagrees significantly with the previously accepted value, and destroys overall consistency among the nine most precisely characterized T=1 superallowed beta emitters. This raises the possibility of a systematic discrepancy between Penning-trap measurements and the reaction-based measurements upon which the Qec values depended in the past. We carefully re-analyze (n,gamma) and (p,gamma) reaction measurements in the 24 \leq A \leq 28 mass region, and compare the results to very precise Penning-trap measur…
We report new shell-model calculations of the isospin-symmetry-breaking correction to superallowed nuclear beta decay. The most important improvement is the inclusion of core orbitals, which are demonstrated to have a significant impact on the mismatch in the radial wave functions of the parent and daughter states. We determine which core orbitals are important to include from an examination of measured spectroscopic factors in single-nucleon pick-up reactions. We also examine the new radiative-correction calculation by Marciano and Sirlin and, by a simple reorganization, show that it is possi…
We examine the reliability of the small calculated corrections that have been applied to the data, and conclude that there are no …
We present a parameterization of the statistical rate function, f, for 20 superallowed 0+-to-0+ nuclear beta transitions between T=1 analog states, and for 18 superallowed "mirror" transitions between analog T=1/2 states. All these transitions are of interest in the determination of V_{ud}. Although most of the transition Q_{EC} values have been measured, their precision will undoubtedly be improved in future. Our parameterization allows a user to easily calculate the corresponding new f value to high precision (+/-0.01%) without complicated computing.
We present a new measurement of the branching ratio for the decay of $^{14}$O to the ground state of $^{14}$N. The experimental result, $λ_0/λ_{\rm total} = (4.934 \pm 0.040\kern 1pt{\rm (stat.)} \pm 0.061\kern 1pt{\rm (syst.)}) \times 10^{-3}$, is significantly smaller than previous determinations of this quantity. The new measurement allows an improved determination of the partial halflife for the superallowed $0^+ \rightarrow 0^+$ Fermi decay to the $^{14}$N first excited state, which impacts the determination of the $V_{ud}$ element of the CKM matrix. With the new measurement in place, the…
A complete and critical survey is presented of all half-life, decay-energy and branching-ratio measurements related to 20 superallowed decays; no measurements are ignored, though some are rejected for cause and others updated. A new calculation of the statistical rate function is described and experimental ft values determined. The associated theoretical corrections needed to convert these results into Ft values are discussed, and careful attention is paid to the origin and magnitude of their uncertainties. As an exacting confirmation of the conserved vector current hypothesis, the Ft values a…
The Vud element of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix can be determined from several different experimental approaches: either 0+-to-0+ superallowed nuclear beta decays, neutron decay, nuclear mirror decays, or pion beta decay. Currently all give consistent results but, because the nuclear superallowed value has an uncertainty at least a factor of seven less than all other results, it dominates the result. A new survey of world superallowed-decay data establishes the Ft values of 14 separate superallowed transitions to a precision of order 0.1% or better; and all 14 are statistically consist…
A precision measurement of the gamma yields following the beta decay of 32Cl has determined its isobaric analogue branch to be (22.47^{+0.21}_{-0.19})%. Since it is an almost pure Fermi decay, we can also determine the amount of isospin-symmetry breaking in this superallowed transition. We find a very large value, delta_C=5.3(9)%, in agreement with a shell-model calculation. This result sets a benchmark for isospin-symmetry-breaking calculations and lends support for similarly-calculated, yet smaller, corrections that are currently applied to 0+ -> 0+ transitions for tests of the Standard Mode…
A high-precision branching ratio measurement for the superallowed Fermi $β^{+}$ emitter $^{62}$Ga was performed with the Gamma-Ray Infrastructure for Fundamental Investigations of Nuclei (GRIFFIN) spectrometer at the Isotope Separator and Accelerator (ISAC) radioactive ion beam facility at TRIUMF. The high efficiency of the GRIFFIN spectrometer allowed 63 $γ$-ray transitions, with intensities down to $\approx$1 part per million (ppm) per $^{62}$Ga $β^{+}$ decay, to be placed in the level scheme of the daughter nucleus $^{62}$Zn, establishing the superallowed $β$ branching ratio for $^{62}$Ga d…
Nuclear beta decays between (J^pi,T) = (0^+,1) analog states yield the best value for the Vud element of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix. Current world data establish the corrected Ft values of 14 separate superallowed transitions to a precision of order 0.1% or better. The validity of the small theoretical correction terms is confirmed by excellent consistency among the 14 Ft values and by recent measurements that compare pairs of mirror superallowed transitions. With consistency established, the results now yield |Vud| = 0.97420(21). This value is consistent with the considerably less p…
Background: Models to calculate small isospin-symmetry-breaking effects in superallowed Fermi decays have been placed under scrutiny in recent years. A stringent test of these models is to measure transitions for which the correction is predicted to be large. The decay of 32Cl decay provides such a test case. Purpose: To improve the gamma yields following the beta decay of 32Cl and to determine the ft values of the the beta branches, particularly the one to the isobaric-analogue state in 32S. Method: Reaction-produced and recoil-spectrometer-separated 32Cl is collected in tape and transported …
A new critical survey is presented of all half-life, decay-energy and branching-ratio measurements related to 20 superallowed 0+ --> 0+ beta decays. Included are 222 individual measurements of comparable precision obtained from 177 published references. Compared with our last review in 2008, we have added results from 24 new publications and eliminated 9 references, the results from which having been superseded by much more precise modern data. We obtain world-average ft-values for each of the eighteen transitions that have a complete set of data, then apply radiative and isospin-symmetry-brea…
By comparing the Q-values for the 46Ti(3He,t)46V and 47Ti(3He,t)47}V reactions to the isobaric analog states the Q-value for the superallowed Fermi-decay of 46V has been determined as Q_{EC}(46V)=(7052.11+/-0.27) keV. The result is compatible with the values from two recent direct mass measurements but is at variance with the previously most precise reaction Q-value. As additional input quantity we have determined the neutron separation energy S_n(47Ti)=(8880.51+/-0.25) keV.
A complete survey is presented of all half-life and branching-ratio measurements related to the isospin T = 1/2 mirror beta transitions ranging from 3He to 83Mo. No measurements are ignored, although some are rejected for cause. Using the decay energies obtained in the 2003 Mass Evaluation experimental ft values are then determined for the transitions up to 45V. For the first time also all associated theoretical corrections needed to convert these results into "corrected" Ft values, similar to the superallowed 0+ -> 0+ pure Fermi beta transitions, were calculated. Precisions of the resulting v…
A new critical survey is presented of all half-life, decay-energy and branching-ratio measurements related to 20 0+ to 0+ beta decays. Compared with our last review, there are numerous improvements: First, we have added 27 recently published measurements and eliminated 9 references; of particular importance, the new data include a number of high-precision Penning-trap measurements of decay energies. Second, we have used the recently improved isospin symmetry-breaking corrections. Third, our calculation of the statistical rate function now accounts for possible excitation in the daughter atom. …
Limits on parameters describing physics beyond the Standard Model are presented. The most general Lorentz invariant effective Hamiltonian at the quark-lepton level involving vector, scalar and tensor operators has been used. The fits have been done using the most precise and up to date experimental data for correlation coefficients measured in free neutron beta decay as well as the Fierz term measured in superallowed Fermi decays.
The positron-neutrino correlation in the 0^+ \to 0^+ βdecay of ^{32}Ar was measured at ISOLDE by analyzing the effect of lepton recoil on the shape of the narrow proton group following the superallowed decay. Our result is consistent with the Standard Model prediction; for vanishing Fierz interference we find a=0.9989 \pm 0.0052 \pm 0.0036. Our result leads to improved constraints on scalar weak interactions. The positron-neutrino correlation in ^{33}Ar decay was measured in the same experiment; for vanishing Fierz interference we find a=0.944 \pm 0.002 \pm 0.003. The ^{32}Ar and ^{33}Ar corre…
We present the full description of a measurement of the branching ratios for the beta-decay of 38Ca. This decay includes five allowed 0+ --> 1+ branches and a superallowed 0+ --> 0+ one. With our new result for the latter, we determine its ft value to be 3062.3(68) s, a result whose precision (0.2%) is comparable to the precision of the thirteen well known 0+ --> 0+ transitions used up till now for the determination of Vud, the up-down quark-mixing element of the CKM matrix. The 38Ca superallowed transition thus becomes the first addition to this set of transitions in nearly a decade and the f…
We report on a new measurement of the strength of the superallowed 0+->0+ transition in the beta-decay of 10C: 10C(0+,g.s.)->10B(0+,1.74MeV)+e+nu. The experiment was done at the LBNL 88-inch cyclotron using forty seven GAMMASPHERE germanium detectors. Precise knowledge of this branching ratio is necessary to compute the superallowed Fermi ft, which gives the weak vector coupling constant and the u to d element of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi- Maskawa quark mixing matrix.
With more intense sources of cold and ultracold neutrons becoming available and with improved experimental techniques being developed, determination of |Vud| from neutron beta decay with a similar precision to that from from superallowed beta decays is within reach. Determination of |Vud| from neutron beta decay, free from nuclear corrections, hold the most promise for a further improvement of the determination of |Vud|. The current and future neutron beta decay correlation experiments including the UCNA experiment at Los Alamos National Laboratory are reviewed
We report first time measurements of the beta-neutrino angular correlation based on the kinetic energy shift of protons emitted in parallel or anti-parallel directions with respect to the positron in the beta decay of $^{32}$Ar. This proof of principle experiment provided simultaneous measurements for the superallowed 0$^+$~$\rightarrow$~0$^+$ transition followed by a 3356~keV proton emission and for a Gamow-Teller transition followed by a 2123~keV proton emission. The results, respectively ${\tilde a_{βν}}=1.01(3)_{(stat)}(2)_{(syst)}$ and ${\tilde a_{βν}}=-0.22(9)_{(stat)}(2)_{(syst)}$, are …
We used the 8$π$ $γ$-ray spectrometer at the TRIUMF-ISAC radiocative ion beam facility to obtain high-precision branching ratios for $^{19}$Ne $β^+$ decay to excited states in $^{19}$F. Together with other previous work, our measurements determine the superallowed $1/2^+ \to 1/2^+$ beta branch to the ground state in $^{19}$F to be 99.9878(7)\%, which is three times more precise than known previously. The implications of these measurements for testing a variety of weak interaction symmetries are discussed briefly.
The best value for Vud comes from superallowed 0+ to 0+ nuclear beta transitions, of which thirteen have now been measured with high precision. The current status of these measurements is described, and the result compared with that of measurements from neutron decay and pion beta decay. Future prospects for improvement are discussed.
We investigate the decay of 87Br, 88Br and 94Rb using total absorption gamma-ray spectroscopy. These important fission products are beta-delayed neutron emitters. Our data show considerable gamma-intensity, so far unobserved in high-resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy, from states at high excitation energy. We also find significant differences with the beta intensity that can be deduced from existing measurements of the beta spectrum. We evaluate the impact of the present data on reactor decay heat using summation calculations. Although the effect is relatively small it helps to reduce the discr…
High-precision Penning trap mass measurements on the stable nuclide 27Al as well as on the short-lived radionuclides 26Al and 38,39Ca have been performed by use of radiofrequency excitation with time-separated oscillatory fields, i.e. Ramsey's method, as recently introduced for the excitation of the ion motion in a Penning trap, was applied. A comparison with the conventional method of a single continuous excitation demonstrates its advantage of up to ten times shorter measurements. The new mass values of 26,27Al clarify conflicting data in this specific mass region. In addition, the resulting…
We have measured the half-life of $^{14}$O, a superallowed $(0^{+} \to 0^{+})$ $β$ decay isotope. The $^{14}$O was produced by the $^{12}$C($^{3}$He,n)$^{14}$O reaction using a carbon aerogel target. A low-energy ion beam of $^{14}$O was mass separated and implanted in a thin beryllium foil. The beta particles were counted with plastic scintillator detectors. We find $t_{1/2} = 70.696\pm 0.052$ s. This result is $1.5σ$ higher than an average value from six earlier experiments, but agrees more closely with the most recent previous measurement.
Precision studies of $0^{+} \rightarrow 0^{+}$ superallowed $β$ decays provide the necessary data to test stringently the CVC hypothesis. They will also provide a value for the weak vector coupling constant and the $V_{ud}$ quark mixing element of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix. The determination of this element is crucial for the test of the unitarity of the CKM matrix, and the search for physics beyond the Standard Model. This paper reviews the current status of $0^{+} \rightarrow 0^{+}$ $β$-decay data and their implications, as well as some relevant data from the $β$ decay of $^…
Precision measurements in allowed nuclear beta decays and neutron decay are reviewed and analyzed both within the Standard Model and looking for new physics. The analysis incorporates the most recent experimental and theoretical developments. The results are interpreted in terms of Wilson coefficients describing the effective interactions between leptons and nucleons (or quarks) that are responsible for beta decay. New global fits are performed incorporating a comprehensive list of precision measurements in neutron decay, superallowed $0^+\rightarrow 0^+$ transitions, and other nuclear decays …
A tandem Penning trap facility has been designed and is under construction at the Texas A&M University Cyclotron Institute (TAMU-TRAP). The initial experimental program will be the study of correlation parameters for T=2 superallowed beta-delayed proton emitters. The measurement trap is a unique large-bore optimized 5-electrode cylindrical Penning trap, which features a 90 mm free radius, larger than in any existing Penning trap. This novel geometry allows for full radial containment of decay products of interest. The trap has also been designed to exhibit a "tunable" and "orthogonalized" geom…
The background on double beta decay searches due to elastic electron scattering of solar neutrinos of all double beta emitters with Q-value larger than 2 MeV is calculated, taking into account survival probability and flux uncertainties of solar neutrinos. This work determines the background level to be [1-2]E-7 counts /keV/kg/yr, depending on the precise Q-value of the double beta emitter. It is also shown that the background level increases dramatically if going to lower Q-values. Furthermore, studies are done for various detector systems under consideration for next generation experiments. …
