We performed a high-precision study of the $^{215}$ Po $α$-decay using a LaBr$_3$ scintillating detector in a low-background environment. The $^{227}$Ac intrinsic contamination in the LaBr$_3$ crystal undergoes a decay chain, producing the intermediate pair of $^{219}$Rn$\rightarrow^{215}$Po$\rightarrow^{211}$Pb decays. The fast time response and good energy resolution of the detector allow for extracting the short half-life of $^{215}$Po from the time correlation of the two subsequent $α$-decays by using the delayed coincidence method. Thanks to high statistics and a comprehensive uncertainty assessment, we obtain the most precise half-life value to date of $^{215}$Po, corresponding to $1.77804\pm0.00091$(stat.)$\pm0.00067$(syst.) ms.
Localization and modeling of radioactive contaminations is a challenge that ultra-low background experiments are constantly facing. These are fundamental steps both to extract scientific results and to further reduce the background of the detectors. Here we present an innovative technique based on the analysis of $α-α$ delayed coincidences in $^{232}$Th and $^{238}$U decay chains, developed to investigate the contaminations of the ZnSe crystals in the CUPID-0 experiment. This method allows to disentangle surface and bulk contaminations of the detectors relying on the different probability to t…
In the framework of rare event searches, the identification of radioactive contaminants in ultra-pure samples is a challenging task, because the signal is often at the same level of the instrumental background. This is a rather common situation for $α$-spectrometers and other detectors used for low-activity measurements. In order to obtain the target sensitivity without extending the data taking live-time, analysis strategies that highlight the presence of the signal sought should be developed. In this paper, we show how to improve the contaminant tagging capability relying on the time-correla…
Materials selection for rare event physics requires high performance detectors and customized analyses. In this context a novel $β$-$γ$ detection system, comprised of a liquid scintillator in coincidence with a HPGe, was developed with the main purpose of studying ultra trace contamination of uranium, thorium and potassium in liquid samples. In the search for $^{238}\textrm{U}$ contaminations through neutron activation analysis, since the activation product $^{239}\textrm{Np}$ decays to a relatively long-lived isomeric state of $^{239}\textrm{Pu}$, it is possible to perform a time selection of…
Studies on double beta decay processes in $^{106}$Cd were performed by using a cadmium tungstate scintillator enriched in $^{106}$Cd at 66% ($^{106}$CdWO$_4$) with two CdWO$_4$ scintillation counters (with natural Cd composition). No effect was observed in the data accumulated over 26033 h. New improved half-life limits were set on the different channels and modes of the $^{106}$Cd double beta decay at level of $\lim T_{1/2}\sim 10^{20}-10^{22}$ yr. The limit for the two neutrino electron capture with positron emission in $^{106}$Cd to the ground state of $^{106}$Pd, $T^{2ν\mathrm{EC}β^+}_{1/2…
This paper deals with the formation of a bound dineutron in the outgoing channel of the $^{159}$Tb(n,$^2$n)$^{158g}$Tb nuclear reaction followed by assumed transformations of this reaction products $^{159g}$Tb and $^2$n. Such nuclear processes were studied in detail from the point of view of $^{160}$Tb / $^{160}$Dy / $^{160}$Ho amount of nuclei versus time dependence. Some signs of fusion process between heavier nuclei ($^{158}$Tb and/or $^{158}$Gd) and the deuteron, that is a bound dineutron decay product, were detected as unexpected increasing of 879.38 keV gamma-ray peak count rate due to $…
The $β$ decay of the neutron-rich $^{134}$In and $^{135}$In was investigated experimentally in order to provide new insights into the nuclear structure of the tin isotopes with magic proton number $Z=50$ above the $N=82$ shell. The $β$-delayed $γ$-ray spectroscopy measurement was performed at the ISOLDE facility at CERN, where indium isotopes were selectively laser-ionized and on-line mass separated. Three $β$-decay branches of $^{134}$In were established, two of which were observed for the first time. Population of neutron-unbound states decaying via $γ$ rays was identified in the two daughte…
The Gas Amplifier Detector with Germanium Tagging (GADGET) is a new detection system devoted to the measurement of weak, low-energy $β$-delayed proton decays relevant for nuclear astrophysics studies. It is comprised of a new gaseous Proton Detector equipped with a Micromegas readout for charged particle detection, surrounded by the existing Segmented Germanium Array (SeGA) for the high-resolution detection of the prompt $γ$-rays. In this work we describe in detail for the first time the design, construction, and operation of the GADGET system, including performance of the Proton Detector. We …
We perform coincidence measurements between $α$ particles and $γ$ rays from a $^{233}$U source to determine the half-lives of the excited state in a $^{229}$Th nucleus. We first prove that the half-lives of 42.43- and 164.53-keV states are consistent with literature values, whereas that of the 97.14-keV state (93(7) ps) deviates from a previously measured value (147(12) ps). The half-lives of 71.83- and 163.25-keV states are determined for the first time. Based on the obtained half-lives and the Alaga rule, we estimate the radiative half-life of the low-energy isomeric state ($^{229m}$Th) to b…
