We give a geometric criterion which shows p-parabolicity of a class of submanifolds in a Riemannian manifold, with controlled second fundamental form, for p bigger or equal than 2.
We give a set of sufficient and necessary conditions for parabolicity and hyperbolicity of a submanifold with controlled mean curvature in a Riemannian manifold with a pole and with sectional curvatures bounded from above or from below.
Let $P$ be a submanifold properly immersed in a rotationally symmetric manifold having a pole and endowed with a weight $e^h$. The aim of this paper is twofold. First, by assuming certain control on the $h$-mean curvature of $P$, we establish comparisons for the $h$-capacity of extrinsic balls in $P$, from which we deduce criteria ensuring the $h$-parabolicity or $h$-hyperbolicity of $P$. Second, we employ functions with geometric meaning to describe submanifolds of bounded $h$-mean curvature which are confined into some regions of the ambient manifold. As a consequence, we derive half-space a…
In this note, we consider submanifolds of a generalized Kähler manifold that are CR-submanifolds for the two associated Hermitian structures. Then, we establish the conditions for the induced, generalized F structure to be a CRFK structure. The results extend similar conditions which we obtained for hypersurfaces in an earlier paper.
Warped product CR-submanifolds in Kaehlerian manifolds were intensively studied only since 2001 after the impulse given by B.Y. Chen. Immediately after, another line of research, similar to that concerning Sasakian geometry as the odd dimensional version of Kaehlerian geometry, was developed, namely warped product contact CR-submanifolds in Sasakian manifolds. In this note we proved that there exists no proper doubly warped product contact CR-submanifolds in trans-Sasakian manifolds.
In this note, we prove that given a submanifold $P$ in a Finsler manifold $(M,F)$, (i) the orthogonal geodesics to $P$ minimize the distance from $P$ at least in some interval, (ii) there exist tubular neighbourhoods around each point of $P$, (iii) the distance from $P$ is smooth in some open neighbourhood of $P$ (but not necessarily in $P$).
The present paper deals with some results of almsot semi-invariant submanifolds of generalized Sasakian-space-forms in \cite{ALEGRE3} with respect to semisymmetric metric connection, semisymmetric non-metric connection, Schouten-van Kampen connection and Tanaka-Webster connection.
In generalized complex geometry, we revisit linear subspaces and submanifolds that have an induced generalized complex structure. We give an expression of the induced structure that allows us to deduce a smoothness criteria, we dualize the results to submersions and we make a few comments on generalized complex mappings. Then, we discuss submanifolds of generalized Kaehler manifolds that have an induced generalized Kaehler structure. These turn out to be the common invariant submanifolds of the two classical complex structures of the generalized Kaehler manifold.
We characterize biharmonic anti-invariant surfaces in $3$-dimensional generalized $(κ, μ)$-manifolds with non-zero constant mean curvature by means of the scalar curvature of the ambient space and the mean curvature. In addition, we give a method for constructing infinity many examples of biharmonic submanifolds in a certain $3$-dimensional generalized $(κ, μ)$-manifold. Moreover, we determine $3$-dimensional generalized $(κ, μ)$-manifolds which admit a certain kind of proper biharmonic foliation.
In this paper a bijective correspondence between superminimal surfaces of an oriented Riemannian $4$-manifold and particular Lagrangian submanifolds of the twistor space over the $4$-manifold is proven. More explicitly, for every superminimal surface a submanifold of the twistor space is constructed which is Lagrangian for all the natural almost Hermitian structures on the twistor space. The twistor fibration restricted to the constructed Lagrangian gives a circle bundle over the superminimal surface. Conversely, if a submanifold of the twistor space is Lagrangian for all the natural almost He…
Following Burstall and Hertrich-Jeromin we study the Ribaucour transformation of Legendre submanifolds in Lie sphere geometry. We give an explicit parametrization of the resulted Legendre submanifold $\hat{F}$ of a Ribaucour transformation, via a single real function $τ$ which represents the regular Ribaucour sphere congruence $s$ enveloped by the original Legendre submanifold $F$.

The concept of quasi generalized CR-lightlike was first introduced by the authors in [18]. In this paper, we focus on ascreen and co-screen quasi generalized CR-lightlike submanifolds of indefinite nearly $μ$-Sasakian manifold. We prove an existence theorem for minimal ascreen quasi generalized CR-lightlike submanifolds admitting a metric connection. Classification theorems on nearly parallel and auto-parallel distributions on a co-screen quasi generalized CR-lightlike submanifold are also given. Several examples are also constructed, where necessary, to illustrate the main ideas.
The purpose of this short note is to prove the uniqueness of Hamiltonian volume minimizing Lagrangian submanifolds which are Hamiltonian isotopic to RP^n in CP^n modulo isometric group actions.
In this note, we give a brief survey on some recent developments of biharmonic submanifolds. After reviewing some recent progress on Chen's biharmonic conjecture, the Generalized Chen's conjecture on biharmonic submanifolds of non-positively curved manifolds, and some classifications of biharmonic submanifolds of spheres, we give a short list of some open problems in this topic.
In this note we prove that QR-submanifolds of the hyper-Kahler manifolds under some conditions admit the $G_2$ holonomy. We give simplest examples of such QR-submanifolds namely tori. We conjecture that all $G_2$ holonomy manifolds arise in this way.
In this short note, we study the behavior of Kaher-Ricci flow on Kahler manifolds which contract divisors to smooth submanifolds. We show that the Kahler potentials are Holder continuous and the flow converges sequentially in Gromov-Hausdorff topology to a compact metric space which is homeomorphic to the base manifold.
Degenerate submanifolds of pseudo-Riemannian manifolds are quite difficult to study because there is no prefered connection when the submanifold is not totally geodesic. For the particular case of degenerate totally umbilical hypersurfaces, we show that there are "Weyl" connections adapted to the induced structure on the hypersurface. We begin the study of these with their holonomy.
In the present note, first we derive an intrinsic inequality for Pseudo-umbilical spacelike submanifold in an indefinite space form. We use this inequality to show that such submanifold is totally geodesic. In the rest part of this paper, using a result of Aiyama [1], we prove that Pseudo-umbilical spacelike subamnifold is totally umbilical.
In an earlier paper we discussed soldered forms, multivector fields and Riemannian metrics. In particular, we showed that a Riemannian submanifold is totally geodesic iff the metric is soldered to the submanifold. In the present note we discuss general, soldered tensor fields. In particular, we prove that the almost complex structure of an almost Kähler manifold is soldered to a submanifold iff the latter is an invariant, totally geodesic submanifold.
In this note, we obtain the sharp estimates for the first eigenvalue of Paneitz operator for $4$-dimensional compact submanifolds in Euclidean space. Since unit spheres and projective spaces can be canonically imbedded into Euclidean space, the corresponding estimates for the first eigenvalue are also obtained.
In this note, we classify biharmonic submanifolds in a sphere defined by bi-eigenmaps ($Δ^2 ϕ=λϕ$) or buckling eigenmaps ($Δ^2 ϕ=-μΔϕ$). We then classify biharmonic bi-eigenmaps and buckling eigenmaps into spheres with constant energy density. The results can be viewed as generalizations of Takahashi's characterization of minimal submanifolds in a sphere by eigenmaps.
We introduce the notion of CR quaternionic map and we prove that any such real-analytic map, between CR quaternionic manifolds, is the restriction of a quaternionic map between quaternionic manifolds. As an application, we prove, for example, that for any submanifold $M$, of dimension $4k-1$, of a quaternionic manifold $N$, such that $TM$ generates a quaternionic subbundle of $TN|_M$, of (real) rank $4k$, there exists, locally, a quaternionic submanifold of $N$, containing $M$ as a hypersurface.
B.-Y. Chen famously conjectured that every submanifold of Euclidean space with harmonic mean curvature vector is minimal. In this note we establish a much more general statement for a large class of submanifolds satisfying a growth condition at infinity. We discuss in particular two popular competing natural interpretations of the conjecture when the Euclidean background space is replaced by an arbitrary Riemannian manifold. Introducing the notion of epsilon-superbiharmonic submanifolds, which contains each of the previous notions as special cases, we prove that epsilon-superbiharmonic submani…
Let $σ>1$ and let $M$ be a complete Riemannian manifold. In a recent work [9], Grigor$^{\prime}$yan and Sun proved that a pointwise upper bound of volume growth is sufficient for uniqueness of nonnegative solutions of elliptic inequality $$(*)\quad\qquad\qquad\qquad Δu(x)+u^σ(x)\leq 0,\qquad x\in M.\quad\qquad \qquad\qquad $$ In this note, we improve their result to that an \emph{integral condition} on volume growth implies the same uniqueness of ($*$). It is inspired by the well-known Varopoulos-Grigor$^{\prime}$yan's criterion for parabolicity of $M$.
This is a companion note of [Zhaa] (arXiv:1501.01836) where the extension of local calibration pairs of smooth submanifolds is discussed. Here we emphasize on the case of singular submanifolds. More precisely, we study when a calibration pair around the singular set of a submanifold can extend to a local calibration pair about the entire submanifold. Based upon [Zhab] (arXiv:1501.04681) several examples of particular interests under the view of calibrated geometry are considered.
These are lecture notes on the rigidity of submanifolds of projective space "resembling" compact Hermitian symmetric spaces in their homogeneous embeddings. Recent results are surveyed, along with their classical predecessors. The notes include an introduction to moving frames in projective geometry, an exposition of the Hwang-Yamaguchi ridgidity theorem and a new variant of the Hwang-Yamaguchi theorem.
In this note we prove a Weierstrass representation formula for pluriminimal submanifolds of euclidean spaces. We use this formula to produce new families of examples of pluriminimal submanifolds. We also prove that any affine algebraic manifold can be pluriminimally embedded into some euclidean space in a non holomorphic manner.
In the biharmonic submanifolds theory there is a generalized Chen's conjecture which states that biharmonic submanifolds in a Riemannian manifold with non-positive sectional curvature must be minimal. This conjecture turned out false by a counter example of Y. L. Ou and L. Tang in \cite{Ou-Ta}. However it remains interesting to find out sufficient conditions which guarantee this conjecture to be true. In this note we prove that: 1. Any complete biharmonic submanifold (resp. hypersurface) $(M, g)$ in a Riemannian manifold $(N, h)$ with non-positive sectional curvature (resp. Ricci curvature) wh…
An $n$ dimensional minimal submanifold $Σ$ of $\R^{n+m}$ is called non-parametric if $Σ$ can be represented as the graph of a vector-valued function $f:D\subset \R^n \mapsto \R^m$. This note provides a sufficient condition for the stability of such $Σ$ in terms of the norm of the differential $df$.
In this note, we prove lower and upper bounds for Dirac operators of submanifolds in certain ambient manifolds in terms of conformal and extrinsic quantities.
The computation of the index of the Hessian of the action functional in semi-Riemannian geometry at geodesics with two variable endpoints is reduced to the case of a fixed final endpoint. Using this observation, we give an elementary proof of the Morse Index Theorem for Riemannian geodesics with two variable endpoints, in the spirit of the original Morse's proof. This approach reduces substantially the effort required in the proofs of the Theorem given in previous articles on the subject. Exactly the same argument works also in the case of timelike geodesics between two submanifolds of a Loren…
This is an expository and introductory note on some results obtained in "Coisotropic embeddings in Poisson manifolds" (ArXiv math/0611480). Some original material is contained in the last two sections, where we consider linear Poisson structures.
The purpose of these notes is to explain parts of Gromov's survey of Carnot-Carathedory spaces, in the light of subsequent results of M. Rumin. Among the rich material provided by Gromov, most of which pertains to analysis on metric spaces, we choose to concentrate on the H{ö}lder equivalence problem for Carnot manifolds. The notes go to some extent into the PDE technique used by Gromov in order to construct horizontal submanifolds. Rumin's complex is explained too. The upshot is that both methods yield more or less the same conclusions as far as the H{ö}lder equivalence problem is concerned.
In this note we give a characterization of taut Riemannian foliations using the transverse divergence. This result turns out to be a convenient tool in the case of some standard examples. Furthermore, we show that a classical tautness result of Haefliger can be obtained in our particular setting as a straightforward consequence. In the final part of the paper we obtain a tautness characterization for transversally oriented foliations with dense leaves and investigate the case of a submanifold of lower dimension which is closed and orthogonal to the leaves.
It is well known that an $m$-dimensional Riemannian manifold can be locally isometrically embedded into the $m+1$-dimensional Euclidean space if and only if there exists a symmetric 2-tensor field satisfying the Gauss and Codazzi equations. In this paper, we prove that two known intrinsic conditions, which were obtained previously by Weiss, Thomas and Rivertz, are sufficient to ensure the existence of such symmetric 2-tensor field under certain generic condition when $m=3$. Note that, in the case $m=3$, a symmetric 2-tensor field satisfying the Gauss equation does not satisfy the Codazzi equat…
In this note we show that the recent dynamical stability result for small $C^1$-perturbations of strongly stable minimal submanifolds of C.-J. Tsai and M.-T. Wang directly extends to the enhanced Brakke flows of Ilmanen. We illustrate applications of this result, including a local uniqueness statement for strongly stable minimal submanifolds amongst stationary varifolds, and a mechanism to flow through some singularities of Lagrangian mean curvature flow which are proved to occur by Neves.
This article shows that given any orientable 3-manifold X, the 7-manifold T^*X x R admits a closed G_2-structure varphi=Re(Omega)+omega\wedge dt where Omega is a certain complex-valued 3-form on T^*X; next, given any 2-dimensional submanifold S of X, the conormal bundle N^*S of S is a 3-dimensional submanifold of T^*X x R such that varphi restricted to N^*S is equivalent to 0. A corollary of the proof of this result is that N^*S x R is a 4-dimensional submanifold of T^*X x R such that varphi restricted to N^*S x R is equivalent to 0.
The first goal of this note is to study the Almansi property on an m-dimensional model in the sense of Greene and Wu and, more generally, in a Riemannian geometric setting. In particular, we shall prove that the only model on which the Almansi property is verified is the Euclidean space R^m. In the second part of the paper we shall study Almansi's property and biharmonicity for functions which depend on the distance from a given submanifold. Finally, in the last section we provide an extension to the semi-Euclidean case R^{p,q} which includes the proof of the classical Almansi property in R^m …
In this note we show the following result using the integral-geometric formula of R. Howard: Consider the totally geodesic $\mathbb{R}P^{2m}$ in $\mathbb{C}P^n$. Then it minimizes volume among the isotropic submanifolds in the same $\mathbb{Z}/2$ homology class in $\mathbb{C}P^n$ (but not among all submanifolds in this $\mathbb{Z}/2$ homology class). Also the totally geodesic $\mathbb{R}P^{2m-1}$ minimizes volume in its Hamiltonian deformation class in $\mathbb{C}P^n$. As a corollary we'll give estimates for volumes of Lagrangian submanifolds in complete intersections in $\mathbb{C}P^n$.
These notes consist of a study of special Lagrangian submanifolds of Calabi-Yau manifolds and their moduli spaces. The particular case of three dimensions, important in string theory, allows us to introduce the notion of gerbes. These offer an appropriate language for describing many significant features of the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow approach to mirror symmetry.
We show that mean curvature flow of a compact submanifold in a complete Riemannian manifold cannot form singularity at time infinity if the ambient Riemannian manifold has bounded geometry and satisfies certain curvature and volume growth conditions .
We give an example of a homogeneous reflexive sheaf over $\mathbb{C}^3$ which admits a non-conical Hermitian Yang-Mills connection. This is expected to model bubbling phenomenon along complex codimension 2 submanifolds when the Fueter section takes zero value.
This note introduces a notion of entropy for submanifolds of hyperbolic space analogous to the one introduced by Colding and Minicozzi for submanifolds of Euclidean space. Several properties are proved for this quantity including monotonicity along mean curvature flow in low dimensions and a connection with the conformal volume.
In this note we establish several versions of a compactness theorem for submanifolds. In particular we require only bounds on the second fundamental form and do not assume volume or diameter bounds. As an application we prove a compactness theorem for mean curvature flows and use it to construct smooth blow-up limits as singularity models.
This note contains some observations on abelian convexity theorems. Convexity along an orbit is established in a very general setting using Kempf-Ness functions. This is applied to give short proofs of the Atiyah-Guillemin-Sternberg theorem and of abelian convexity for the gradient map in the case of a real analytic submanifold of complex projective space. Finally we give an application to the action on the probability measures.
In this note, we look at estimates for the scalar curvature k of a Riemannian manifold M which are related to spin^c Dirac operators: We show that one may not enlarge a Kaehler metric with positive Ricci curvature without making k smaller somewhere on M. We also give explicit upper bounds for min(k) for arbitrary Riemannian metrics on certain submanifolds of complex projective space. In certain cases, these estimates are sharp: we give examples where equality is obtained.
