We prove a structure theorem for topologically conservative real skew product extensions of distal minimal compact metric $\Z$-flows. The main result states that every such extension can be represented by a perturbation of a Rokhlin skew product. Moreover, we give certain counterexamples to point out that all components of the construction are in fact inevitable.
We define shadowable points for homeomorphism on metric spaces. In the compact case we will prove the following results: The set of shadowable points is invariant, possibly nonempty or noncompact. A homeomorphism has the pseudo-orbit tracing property if and only if every point is shadowable. The chain recurrent and nonwandering sets coincides when every chain recurrent point is shadowable. Minimal or distal homeomorphisms of compact connected metric spaces have no shadowable points. The space is totally disconnected at every shadowable point for distal homeomorphisms (and conversely for equico…
Let $X$ be a non-degenerate connected compact metric space. If $X$ admits a distal minimal action by a finitely generated amenable group, then the first \vCech cohomology group $ {\check H}^1(X)$ with integer coefficients is nontrivial. In particular, if $X$ is homotopically equivalent to a CW complex, then $X$ cannot be simply connected.
As the main theorem, it is proved that a collection of minimal $PI$-flows with a common phase group and satisfying a certain algebraic condition is multiply disjoint if and only if the collection of the associated maximal equicontinuous factors is multiply disjoint. In particular, this result holds for collections of minimal distal flows. The disjointness techniques are combined with Furstenberg's example of a minimal distal system with multiple invariant measures to find the exact cardinalities of (extreme) invariant means on $\mathcal{D}(\mathbb{Z})$ and $\mathcal{D}(\mathbb{R})$, the spaces…
We generalize a result of Lindenstrauss on the interplay between measurable and topological dynamics which shows that every separable ergodic measurably distal dynamical system has a minimal distal model. We show that such a model can, in fact, be chosen completely canonically. The construction is performed by going through the Furstenberg--Zimmer tower of a measurably distal system and showing that at each step, there is a simple and canonical distal minimal model. This hinges on a new characterization of isometric extensions in topological dynamics.
We prove a structure theorem for topologically recurrent real skew product extensions of distal minimal compact metric flows with a compactly generated Abelian acting group (e.g. $\Z^d$-flows and $\R^d$-flows). The main result states that every such extension apart from a coboundary can be represented by a perturbation of a so-called Rokhlin skew product. We obtain as a corollary that the topological ergodic decomposition of the skew product extension into prolongations is continuous and compact with respect to the Fell topology on the hyperspace. The right translation acts minimally on this d…
Let $X$ be a compact metric countable space, let $f:X\to X$ be a homeomorphism and let $E(X,f)$ be its Ellis semigroup. Among other results we show that the following statements are equivalent: (i) $(X,f)$ is equicontinuous, (ii) $(X,f)$ is distal and (iii) every point is periodic. We use this result to give a direct proof of a theorem of Ellis saying that $(X,f)$ is distal if, and only if, $E(X,f)$ is a group.
We describe a general procedure to construct topological extensions of given skew product maps with one-dimensional fibres, by blowing up a countable number of single points to vertical segments. This allows to produce various examples of unusual dynamics, including almost automorphic minimal sets of almost periodically forced systems, point-distal but non-distal homeomorpisms of the torus (as first constructed by Rees) or minimal sets of quasiperiodically forced interval maps which are not filled-in.
Mary Rees has constructed a minimal homeomorphism of the 2-torus with positive topological entropy. This homeomorphism f is obtained by enriching the dynamics of an irrational rotation R. We improve Rees construction, allowing to start with any homeomorphism R instead of an irrational rotation and to control precisely the measurable dynamics of f. This yields in particular the following result: Any compact manifold of dimension d>1 which carries a minimal uniquely ergodic homeomorphism also carries a minimal uniquely ergodic homeomorphism with positive topological entropy. More generally, give…
We prove that any minimal $2$-torus homeomorphism which is isotopic to the identity and whose rotation set is not just a point exhibits uniformly bounded rotational deviations on the perpendicular direction to the rotation set. As a consequence of this, we show that any such homeomorphism is topologically mixing and we prove Franks-Misiurewicz conjecture under the assumption of minimality.
As was known to H. Poincare, an orientation preserving circle homeomorphism without periodic points is either minimal or has no dense orbits, and every orbit accumulates on the unique minimal set. In the first case the minimal set is the circle, in the latter case a Cantor set. In this paper we study a two-dimensional analogue of this classical result: we classify the minimal sets of non-resonant torus homeomorphisms; that is, torus homeomorphisms isotopic to the identity for which the rotation set is a point with rationally independent irrational coordinates.
We classify minimal sets of (closed and oriented) hyperbolic surface homeomorphisms by studying the connected components of their complement. This extends the classification given by F. Kwakkel, T.Jäger and A. Passeggi in the torus. The given classification is studied in the non-wandering setting and in light of the Nielsen-Thurston Theory.
In this paper, it is shown that if a dynamical system is null and distal, then it is equicontinuous. It turns out that a null system with closed proximal relation is mean equicontinuous. As a direct application, it follows that a null dynamical system with dense minimal points is also mean equicontinuous. Meanwhile, a distal system with trivial $\text{Ind}_{fip}$-pairs, and a non-trivial regionally proximal relation of order $\infty$ is constructed.
We develop a technique, pseudo-suspension, that applies to invariant sets of homeomorphisms of a class of annulus homeomorphisms we describe, Handel-Anosov-Katok (HAK) homeomorphisms, that generalize the homeomorphism first described by Handel. Given a HAK homeomorphism and a homeomorphism of the Cantor set, the pseudo-suspension yields a homeomorphism of a new space that admits a homeomorphism that combines features of both of the original homeomorphisms. This allows us to answer a well known open question by providing examples of hereditarily indecomposable continua that admit homeomorphisms…
We prove that the family of measured dynamical systems which can be realised as uniquely ergodic minimal homeomorphisms on a given manifold (of dimension at least two) is stable under measured extension. As a corollary, any ergodic system with an irrational eigenvalue is isomorphic to a uniquely ergodic minimal homeomorphism on the two-torus. The proof uses the following improvement of Weiss relative version of Jewett-Krieger theorem: any extension between two ergodic systems is isomorphic to a skew-product on Cantor sets.
Let $M$ be an orientable connected closed surface and $f$ be an $R$-closed homeomorphism on $M$ which is isotopic to identity. Then the suspension of $f$ satisfies one of the following condition: 1) the closure of each element of it is minimal and toral. 2) there is a minimal set which is not locally connected. Moreover, we show that any positive iteration of an $R$-closed homeomorphism on a compact metrizable space is $R$-closed.
Let $f$ be an orientation preserving homeomorphism of $S^2$ which has a (nontrivial) continuum $X$ as a minimal set. Then there are exactly two connected components of $S^2\setminus X$ which are left invariant by $f$ and all the others are wandering. The Carathéodory rotation number of an invariant component is irrational.
There are two main subjects in this paper. 1) For a topological dynamical system $(X,T)$ we study the topological entropy of its "functional envelopes" (the action of $T$ by left composition on the space of all continuous self-maps or on the space of all self-homeomorphisms of $X$). In particular we prove that for zero-dimensional spaces $X$ both entropies are infinite except when $T$ is equicontinuous (then both equal zero). 2) We call $Slovak$ $space$ any compact metric space whose homeomorphism group is cyclic and generated by a minimal homeomorphism. Using Slovak spaces we provide examples…
In this paper we study topological cocycles for minimal homeomorphisms on a compact metric space. We introduce a notion of an essential range for topological cocycles with values in a locally compact group, and we show that this notion coincides with the well known topological essential range if the group is abelian. We define then a regularity condition for cocycles and prove several results on the essential ranges and the orbit closures of the skew product of regular cocycles. Furthermore we show that recurrent cocycles for a minimal rotation on a locally connected compact group are always r…
We provide a classification of minimal sets of homeomorphisms of the two-torus, in terms of the structure of their complement. We show that this structure is exactly one of the following types: (1) a disjoint union of topological disks, or (2) a disjoint union of essential annuli and topological disks, or (3) a disjoint union of one doubly essential component and bounded topological disks. Periodic bounded disks can only occur in type 3. This result provides a framework for more detailed investigations, and additional information on the torus homeomorphism allows to draw further conclusions. I…
In this article we study minimal homeomorphisms(all orbits are dense) of the tori $T^{n},$ $n<5.$ The linear part of a homeomorphism $ϕ$ of $T^{n}$ is the linear mapping $L$ induced by $ϕ$ on the first homology group of $T^{n}$. It follows from the Lefschetz fixed point theorem that 1 is an eigenvalue of $L$ if $ϕ$ minimal. We show that if $ϕ$ is minimal and $n<5$ then $L$ is quasi-unipontent, i.e., all the eigenvalues of $L$ are roots of unity and conversely if $L\in GL(n,\Z)$ is quasi-unipotent and 1 is an eigenvalue of $L$ then there exists a $ C^{\infty}$ minimal skew-product diffeomorphis…
The paper is devoted to study of product recurrence. First, we prove that notions of $\F_{ps}-PR$ and $\F_{pubd}-PR$ are exactly the same as product recurrence, completing that way results of [P. Dong, S. Shao and X. Ye, \emph{Product recurrent properties, disjointness and weak disjointness}, Israel J. Math.], and consequently, extending the characterization of return times of distal points which originated from works of Furstenberg. We also study the structure of the set of return times of weakly mixing sets. As a consequence, we obtain new sufficient conditions for $\F_{s}-PR$ and also find …
Let $f$ be an $R$-closed homeomorphism on a connected orientable closed surface $M$. In this paper, we show that If $M$ has genus more than one, then each minimal set is either a periodic orbit or an extension of a Cantor set. If $M = \mathbb{T}^2$ and $f$ is neither minimal nor periodic, then either each minimal set is finite disjoint union of essential circloids or there is a minimal set which is an extension of a Cantor set. If $M = \mathbb{S}^2$ and $f$ is not periodic but orientation-preserving (resp. reversing), then the minimal sets of $f$ (resp. $f^2$) are exactly two fixed points and …
We construct different types of quasiperiodically forced circle homeomorphisms with transitive but non-minimal dynamics. Concerning the recent Poincaré-like classification for this class of maps of Jaeger-Stark, we demonstrate that transitive but non-minimal behaviour can occur in each of the different cases. This closes one of the last gaps in the topological classification. Actually, we are able to get some transitive quasiperiodically forced circle homeomorphisms with rather complicated minimal sets. For example, we show that, in some of the examples we construct, the unique minimal set is …
Downarowicz and Maass (2008) have shown that every Cantor minimal homeomorphism with finite topological rank $K > 1$ is expansive. Bezuglyi, Kwiatkowski, and Medynets (2009) extended the result to non-minimal aperiodic cases. In this paper, we show that all finite-rank zero-dimensional systems are expansive or have infinite odometer systems; this is an extension of the two aforementioned results. Nevertheless, the methods follow similar approaches.
In this paper it is proved that there is no minimal action (i.e. every orbit is dense) of Z^2 on the plane. The proof uses the non-existence of minimal homeomorphisms on the infinite annulus (Le Calvez-Yoccoz's theorem), and the theory of Brouwer homeomorphisms.
A space is called minimal if it admits a minimal continuous selfmap. We give examples of metrizable continua $X$ admitting both minimal homeomorphisms and minimal noninvertible maps, whose squares $X\times X$ are not minimal, i.e., they admit neither minimal homeomorphisms nor minimal noninvertible maps, thus providing a definitive answer to a question posed by Bruin, Kolyada and the second author in 2003. (In 2018, Boroński, Clark and Oprocha provided an answer in the case when only homeomorphisms were considered.) Then we introduce and study the notion of product-minimality. We call a compac…
We study full groups of minimal actions of countable groups by homeomorphisms on a Cantor space $X$, showing that these groups do not admit a compatible Polish group topology and, in the case of $\Z$-actions, are coanalytic non-Borel inside $\Homeo(X)$. We point out that the full group of a minimal homeomorphism is topologically simple. We also study some properties of the closure of the full group of a minimal homeomorphism inside $\Homeo(X)$.
We introduce minimally expansive and GH-stable points for homeomorphisms on metric spaces and $μ$-uniformly expansive, $μ$-shadowable and strong $μ$-topologically stable points for Borel measures (with respect to a homeomorphism on a metric space). We prove that: (i) minimally expansive shadowable point of a homeomorphism on a compact metric space is topologically stable and GH-stable. (ii) $μ$-uniformly expansive $μ$-shadowable point for a Borel measure $μ$ (with respect to a homeomorphism on a compact metric space) is strong $μ$-topologically stable.
The Lefschetz fixed point theorem provides a powerful obstruction to the existence of minimal homeomorphisms on well-behaved spaces such as finite CW-complexes. We show that these obstructions do not hold for more general spaces. More precisely, minimal homeomorphisms are constructed on space with prescribed $K$-theory or cohomology. We also allow for some control of the map on $K$-theory and cohomology induced from these minimal homeomorphisms. This allows for the construction of many minimal homeomorphisms that are not homotopic to the identity. Applications to $C^*$-algebras will be discuss…
We give an equivalent characterisation for the existence of a semi-conjugacy to an irrational rotation for conservative homeomorphisms of the two-torus. This leads to an analogue of Poincare's classification of circle homeomorphisms for conservative toral homeomorphisms with unique rotation vector and a certain bounded mean motion property. For minimal toral homeomorphisms, the result extends to arbitrary dimensions. Further, we provide a basic classification for the dynamics of non-wandering toral homeomorphisms homotopic to the identitiy.
Let $X$ be an infinite compact metric space and let $h$ be a minimal homeomorphism of $X$. We prove that the radius of comparison of the transformation group C*-algebra of $h$ is at most $1$ plus $36$ times the mean dimension of $h$.
In this paper, we prove first that the space of minimal sets of any homeomorphisms $f:X\to X$ of a regular curve $X$ is closed in the hyperspace $2^X$ of closed subsets of $X$ endowed with the Hausdorff metric, and the non-wandering set $Ω(f)$ is equal to the set of recurrent points of $f$. Second, we study the continuity of the map $ω_f:X\to 2^X;x\mapsto ω_f (x) $, we show for instance the equivalence between the continuity of $ω_f $ and the equality between the $ω$-limit set and the $α$-limit set of every point in $X $. Finally, we prove that there is only one (infinite) minimal set when the…
The following well known open problem is answered in the negative: Given two compact spaces $X$ and $Y$ that admit minimal homeomorphisms, must the Cartesian product $X\times Y$ admit a minimal homeomorphism as well? A key element of our construction is an inverse limit approach inspired by combination of a technique of Aarts & Oversteegen and the construction of Slovak spaces by Downarowicz & Snoha & Tywoniuk. This approach allows us also to prove the following result. Let $ϕ\colon M\times\mathbb{R}\to M$ be a continuous, aperiodic minimal flow on the compact, finite--dimensional metric space…
We completely solve the problem whether the product of two compact metric spaces admitting minimal maps also admits a minimal map. Recently Boroński, Clark and Oprocha gave a negative answer in the particular case when homeomorphisms rather than continuous maps are considered. In the present paper we show that there is a metric continuum $X$ admitting a minimal map, in fact a minimal homeomorphism, such that $X\times X$ does not admit any minimal map.
Let X be a h-homogeneous zero-dimensional compact Hausdorff space, i.e. X is a Stone dual of a homogeneous Boolean algebra. Using the dual Ramsey theorem and a detailed combinatorial analysis of what we call stable collections of subsets of a finite set, we obtain a complete list of the minimal sub-systems of the compact dynamical system (Exp(Exp(X)),Homeo(X)), where Exp(X) stands for the hyperspace comprising the closed subsets of X equipped with the Vietoris topology. The importance of this dynamical system stems from Uspenskij's characterization of the universal ambit of G = Homeo(X). The r…
Let X be an infinite compact metric space with finite covering dimension. Let $\afhpa,\bt: X\to X$ be two minimal homeomorphisms. Suppose that the range of $K_0$-groups of both crossed product C*-algebras s are dense in the space of real affine continuous functions. We show that $\af$ and $\bt$ are approximately conjugate uniformly in measure if and only if they have affine homeomorphic invariant probability measure spaces.
We give a characterization of sets K of probability measures on a Cantor space X with the property that there exists a minimal homeomorphism g of X such that the set of g-invariant probability measures on X coincides with K. This extends theorems of Akin (corresponding to the case when K is a singleton) and Dahl (when K is finite-dimensional). Our argument is elementary and different from both Akin's and Dahl's.
Let $\F$ be a collection of subsets of $\Z_+$ and $(X,T)$ be a dynamical system. $x\in X$ is $\F$-recurrent if for each neighborhood $U$ of $x$, $\{n\in\Z_+:T^n x\in U\}\in \F$. $x$ is $\F$-product recurrent if $(x,y)$ is recurrent for any $\F$-recurrent point $y$ in any dynamical system $(Y,S)$. It is well known that $x$ is $\{infinite\}$-product recurrent if and only if it is minimal and distal. In this paper it is proved that the closure of a $\{syndetic\}$-product recurrent point (i.e. weakly product recurrent point) has a dense minimal points; and a $\{piecewise syndetic\}$-product recurr…
For any minimal system $(X,T)$ and $d\geq 1$ there is an associated minimal system $(N_{d}(X), \mathcal{G}_{d}(T))$, where $\mathcal{G}_{d}(T)$ is the group generated by $T\times\cdots\times T$ and $T\times T^2\times\cdots\times T^{d}$ and $N_{d}(X)$ is the orbit closure of the diagonal under $\mathcal{G}_{d}(T)$. It is known that the maximal $d$-step pro-nilfactor of $N_d(X)$ is $N_d(X_d)$, where $X_d$ is the maximal $d$-step pro-nilfactor of $X$. In this paper, we further study the structure of $N_d(X)$. We show that the maximal distal factor of $N_d(X)$ is $N_d(X_{dis})$ with $X_{dis}$ bein…
We prove the existence of an open and dense set D\subset? Homeo0(T2) (set of toral homeomorphisms homotopic to the identity) such that the rotation set of any element in D is a rational polygon. We also extend this result to the set of axiom A dif- feomorphisms in Homeo0(T2). Further we observe the existence of minimal sets whose rotation set is a non-trivial segment, for an open set in Homeo0(T2).
The theorem of Le Calvez and Yoccoz states that there are no minimal homeomorphisms on the finite punctered 2-dimensional sphere S 2 . We show that this does not hold for other surfaces. Moreover, we discuss why the fast-conjugation-method fails in the most cases to construct such homeomorphisms. This article based on an old unpublished article (Quasi-Minimal, Pseudo-Minimal Systems and Dense Orbits) with incorrect results.
We show that given a compact minimal system $(X,g)$ and an element $h$ of the topological full group $τ[g]$ of $g$, then the infinite orbits of $h$ admit a locally constant orientation with respect to the orbits of $g$. We use this to obtain a clopen partition of $(X,G)$ into minimal and periodic parts, where $G$ is any virtually polycyclic subgroup of $τ[g]$. We also use the orientation of orbits to give a refinement of the index map and to describe the role in $τ[g]$ of the submonoid generated by the induced transformations of $g$. Finally, we consider the problem, given a homeomorphism $h$ …
Let $(X,T)$ be a topological dynamical system, and $\mathcal{F}$ be a family of subsets of $\mathbb{Z}_+$. $(X,T)$ is strongly $\mathcal{F}$-sensitive, if there is $δ>0$ such that for each non-empty open subset $U$, there are $x,y\in U$ with $\{n\in\mathbb{Z}_+: d(T^nx,T^ny)>δ\}\in\mathcal{F}$. Let $\mathcal{F}_t$ (resp. $\mathcal{F}_{ip}$, $\mathcal{F}_{fip}$) be consisting of thick sets (resp. IP-sets, subsets containing arbitrarily long finite IP-sets). The following Auslander-Yorke's type dichotomy theorems are obtained: (1) a minimal system is either strongly $\mathcal{F}_{fip}$-sensitive…
A compact space $X$ is said to be minimal if there exists a map $f:X\to X$ such that the forward orbit of any point is dense in $X$. We consider rigid minimal spaces, motivated by recent results of Downarowicz, Snoha, and Tywoniuk [J. Dyn. Diff. Eq., 2016] on spaces with cyclic group of homeomorphisms generated by a minimal homeomorphism, and results of the first author, Clark and Oprocha [ Adv. Math., 2018] on spaces in which the square of every homeomorphism is a power of the same minimal homeomorphism. We show that the two classes do not coincide, which gives rise to a new class of spaces t…
Let $X$ be an infinite compact metrizable space, and let $σ: X\to X$ be a minimal homeomorphism. Suppose that $(X, σ)$ has zero mean topological dimension. The associated C*-algebra $A=\mathrm{C}(X)\rtimes_σ\mathbb Z$ is shown to absorb the Jiang-Su algebra $\mathcal Z$ tensorially, i.e., $A\cong A\otimes\mathcal Z$. This implies that $A$ is classifiable when $(X, σ)$ is uniquely ergodic. Moreover, without any assumption on the mean dimension, it is shown that $A\otimes A$ always absorbs the Jiang-Su algebra.

We exhibit different examples of minimal sets for an IFS of homeomorphisms with rotation number equal to 0. It is proved that these examples are, from a topological point of view, the unique possible cases.
