In this paper we propose a framework that enables the study of large deviations for point processes based on stationary sequences with regularly varying tails. This framework allows us to keep track not of the magnitude of the extreme values of a process, but also of the order in which these extreme values appear. Particular emphasis is put on (infinite) linear processes with random coefficients. The proposed framework provide a rather complete description of the joint asymptotic behavior of the large values of the stationary sequence. We apply the general result on large deviations for point processes to derive the asymptotic decay of partial sum processes as well as ruin probabilities.
A moderate deviation principle for nonlinear functions of Gaussian processes is established. The nonlinear functions need not be locally bounded. Especially, the logarithm is allowed. (Thus, small deviations of the process are relevant.) Both discrete and continuous time is treated. An integrable power-like decay of the correlation function is assumed.
We find logarithmic asymptotics of $L_2$-small deviation probabilities for weighted stationary Gaussian processes (both for real and complex-valued) having power-type discrete or continuous spectrum. As in the recent work by Hong, Lifshits and Nazarov, our results are based on the spectral theory of pseudo-differential operators developed by Birman and Solomyak.
In this paper, we derive the moderate deviation principle for stationary sequences of bounded random variables with values in a Hilbert space. The conditions obtained are expressed in terms of martingale-type conditions. The main tools are martingale approximations and a new Hoeffding inequality for non adpated sequences of Hilbert-valued random variables. Applications to Cramer-Von Mises statistics, functions of linear processes and stable Markov chains are given.
We investigate the small deviation probabilities of a class of very smooth stationary Gaussian processes playing an important role in Bayesian statistical inference. Our calculations are based on the appropriate modification of the entropy method due to Kuelbs, Li, and Linde as well as on classical results about the entropy of classes of analytic functions. They also involve Tsirelson's upper bound for small deviations and shed some light on the limits of sharpness for that estimate.
We study the large deviations principle (LDP) for stationary solutions of a class of stochastic differential equations (SDE) in infinite time intervals by the weak convergence approach, and then establish the LDP for the invariant measures of the SDE by the contraction principle. We further point out the equivalence of the rate function of the LDP for invariant measures induced by the LDP for stationary solutions and the rate function defined by quasi-potential. This fact gives another view of the quasi-potential introduced by Freidlin and Wentzell.
In this paper we consider stationary Markov chains with trivial two-sided tail sigma field, and prove that additive functionals satisfy the central limit theorem provided the variance of partial sums divided by n is bounded.
We investigate a stationary random coefficient autoregressive process. Using renewal type arguments tailor-made for such processes, we show that the stationary distribution has a power-law tail. When the model is normal, we show that the model is in distribution equivalent to an autoregressive process with ARCH errors. Hence, we obtain the tail behavior of any such model of arbitrary order.
Our model is a constrained homogeneous random walk in a nonnegative orthant Z_+^d. The convergence to stationarity for such a random walk can often be checked by constructing a Lyapunov function. The same Lyapunov function can also be used for computing approximately the stationary distribution of this random walk, using methods developed by Meyn and Tweedie. In this paper we show that, for this type of random walks, computing the stationary probability exactly is an undecidable problem: no algorithm can exist to achieve this task. We then prove that computing large deviation rates for this mo…
This paper studies the light-tailed asymptotics of the stationary tail probability vectors of a Markov chain of M/G/1 type. Almost all related studies have focused on the typical case, where the transition block matrices in the non-boundary levels have a dominant impact on the decay rate of the stationary tail probability vectors and their decay is aperiodic. In this paper, we study not only the typical case but also atypical cases such that the stationary tail probability vectors decay periodically and/or their decay rate is determined by the tail distribution of jump sizes from the boundary …
We consider the small deviation probabilities (SDP) for sums of stationary Gaussian sequences. For the cases of constant boundaries and boundaries tending to zero, we obtain quite general results. For the case of the boundaries tending to infinity, we focus our attention on the discrete analogs of the fractional Brownian motion (FBM). It turns out that the lower bounds for the SDP can be transferred from the well studied FBM caseto the discrete time setting under the usual assumptions that imply weak convergence while the transfer of the corresponding upper bounds necessarily requires a deeper…
Sticky Brownian motions, as time-changed semimartingale reflecting Brownian motions, have various applications in many fields, including queuing theory and mathematical finance. In this paper, we are concerned about the stationary distributions of a multidimensional sticky Brownian motion, provided it is stable. We will study the large deviations principle for stationary distribution and the tail behaviour of the joint stationary distribution.
We consider planar stationary exponential Last Passage Percolation in the positive quadrant with boundary weights. For $ρ\in (0,1)$ and points $v_N=((1-ρ)^2 N,ρ^2 N)$ going to infinity along the characteristic direction, we establish right tail estimates with the optimal exponent for the exit time of the geodesic, along with optimal exponent estimates for the upper tail moderate deviations for the passage time. For the case $ρ=\frac{1}{2}$ in the stationary model, we establish the lower bound estimate with the optimal exponent for the lower tail of the passage time. Our arguments are based on …
We prove a large deviation principle for the largest eigenvalue of Wigner matrices without Gaussian tails, namely such that the distribution tails $\mathbb{P}( |X_{1,1}|>t)$ and $\mathbb{P}(|X_{1,2}|>t)$ behave like $e^{-bt^α}$ and $e^{-at^α}$ respectively for some $a,b\in (0,+\infty)$ and $α\in (0,2)$. The large deviation principle is of speed $N^{α/2}$ and with a good rate function depending only on the tail distribution of the entries.
It is well-known that large deviations of random walks driven by independent and identically distributed heavy-tailed random variables are governed by the so-called principle of one large jump. We note that further subtleties hold for such random walks in the large deviation scale which we call hidden large deviation. We apply this idea in the context of queueing processes with heavy-tailed service times and study approximations of severe congestion times for (buffered) queues. We conclude with simulated examples to verify our results.
For a class of stationary regularly varying and weakly dependent time series, we prove the so-called complete convergence result for the corresponding space-time point processes. As an application of our main theorem, we give a simple proof of the invariance principle for the corresponding partial maximum process.
It is known that large deviations of sums of subexponential random variables are most likely realised by deviations of a single random variable. In this article we give a detailed picture of how subexponential random variables are distributed when a large deviation of their sum is observed.
We consider the superposition of a symmetric simple exclusion dynamics, speeded-up in time, with a spin-flip dynamics in a one-dimensional interval with periodic boundary conditions. We prove the large deviations principle for the empirical measure under the stationary state. We deduce from this result that the stationary state is concentrated on the stationary solutions of the hydrodynamic equation which are stable.
We consider a Markov modulated fluid network with a finite number of stations. We are interested in the tail asymptotics behavior of the stationary distribution of its buffer content process. Using two different approaches, we derive upper and lower bounds for the stationary tail decay rate in various directions. Both approaches are based on a well-known time-evolution formula of a Markov process, so-called Dynkin's formula, where a key ingredient is a suitable choice of test functions. Those results show how multidimensional tail asymptotics can be studied for the more than two-dimensional ca…
In this paper, we consider the $(1,R)$ state-dependent reflecting random walk (RW) on the half line, allowing the size of jumps to the right at maximal $R$ and to the left only 1. We provide an explicit criterion for positive recurrence and the explicit expression of the stationary distribution based on the intrinsic branching structure within the walk. As an application, we obtain the tail asymptotic of the stationary distribution in the "near critical" situation.
Let $(X _i)_{i\geq1}$ be a stationary sequence. Denote $m=\lfloor n^α\rfloor, 0< α< 1,$ and $ k=\lfloor n/m \rfloor,$ where $\lfloor a \rfloor$ stands for the integer part of $a.$ Set $S_{j}^\circ = \sum_{i=1}^m X_{m(j-1)+i}, 1\leq j \leq k,$ and $ (V_k^\circ)^2 = \sum_{j=1}^k (S_{j}^\circ)^2.$ We prove a Cramér type moderate deviation expansion for $\mathbb{P}( \sum_{j=1}^k S_{j}^\circ /V_k^\circ \geq x)$ as $n\to \infty.$ Applications to mixing type sequences, contracting Markov chains, expanding maps and confidence intervals are discussed.
In this paper, we consider the distribution of the supremum of non-stationary Gaussian processes, and present a new theoretical result on the asymptotic behaviour of this distribution. Unlike previously known facts in this field, our main theorem yields the asymptotic representation of the corresponding distribution function with exponentially decaying remainder term. This result can be efficiently used for studying the projection density estimates, based, for instance, on Legendre polynomials. More precisely, we construct the sequence of accompanying laws, which approximates the distribution …
Extremal clusters of stationary processes with long memory can be quite intricate. For certain stationary infinitely divisible processes with subexponential tails, including both power-like tails and certain lighter tails, e.g. lognormal-like tails, such clusters may take the shape of stable regenerative sets. In this paper we show that for semi-exponential tails, which are even lighter, a new shape of extremal clusters arises. In this case each stable regenerative set supports a random panoply of varying extremes.
We prove a functional central limit theorem for partial sums of symmetric stationary long range dependent heavy tailed infinitely divisible processes with a certain type of negative dependence. Previously only positive dependence could be treated. The negative dependence involves cancellations of the Gaussian second order. This leads to new types of limiting processes involving stable random measures, due to heavy tails, Mittag-Leffler processes, due to long memory, and Brownian motions, due to the Gaussian second order cancellations.
We study the asymptotics of the stationary sojourn time Z of a "typical customer" in a tandem of single-server queues. It is shown that, in a certain "intermediate" region of light-tailed service time distributions, Z may take a large value mostly due to a large value of a single service time of one of customers. Arguments used in the paper allow us to obtain also an elementary proof of the logarithmic asymptotics for the tail distribution of the stationary sojourn time in the whole class of light-tailed distributions.
We consider a Markov chain on $R^+$ with asymptotically zero drift and finite second moments of jumps which is positive recurrent. A power-like asymptotic behaviour of the invariant tail distribution is proven; such a heavy-tailed invariant measure happens even if the jumps of the chain are bounded. Our analysis is based on test functions technique and on construction of a harmonic function.
We study large deviation probabilities for a sum of dependent random variables from a heavy-tailed factor model, assuming that the components are regularly varying. We identify conditions where both the factor and the idiosyncratic terms contribute to the behaviour of the tail-probability of the sum. A simple conditional Monte Carlo algorithm is also provided together with a comparison between the simulations and the large deviation approximation. We also study large deviation probabilities for stochastic processes with factor structure. The processes involved are assumed to be Levy processes …
Let $Ψ_1,Ψ_2,...$ be a sequence of i.i.d. random Lipschitz functions on a complete separable metric space with unbounded metric $d$ and forward iterations $X_n$. Suppose that $X_n$ has a stationary distribution. We study the stationary tail behavior of the functional $D_n=d(x_0,X_n)$, $x_0$ an arbitrary reference point, by providing bounds for these random variables in terms of simple contractive iterated function systems on the nonnegative halfline. Our results provide bounds for the lower and upper tail index of $D_n$ and will be illustrated by a number of popular examples including the AR(1…
We consider a stochastic fluid network where the external input processes are compound Poisson with heavy-tailed Weibullian jumps. Our results comprise of large deviations estimates for the buffer content process in the vector-valued Skorokhod space which is endowed with the product $J_1$ topology. To illustrate our framework, we provide explicit results for a tandem queue. At the heart of our proof is a recent sample-path large deviations result, and a novel continuity result for the Skorokhod reflection map in the product $J_1$ topology.
We present a proof of an upper tail bound of the correct order (up to a constant factor in the exponent) in two classes of stationary models in the KPZ universality class. The proof is based on an exponential identity due to Rains in the case of Last Passage Percolation with exponential weights, and recently re-derived by Emrah-Jianjigian-Seppäiläinen (EJS). Our proof follows very similar lines for the two classes of models we consider, using only general monotonocity and convexity properties, and can thus be expected to apply to many other stationary models.
We derive Cramér type moderate deviations for stationary sequences of bounded random variables. Our results imply the moderate deviation principles and a Berry-Esseen bound. Applications to quantile coupling inequalities, functions of $ϕ$-mixing sequences, and contracting Markov chains are discussed.
We consider a two dimensional reflecting random walk on the nonnegative integer quadrant. This random walk is assumed to be skip free in the direction to the boundary of the quadrant, but may have unbounded jumps in the opposite direction, which are referred to as upward jumps. We are interested in the tail asymptotic behavior of its stationary distribution, provided it exists. Assuming the upward jump size distributions have light tails, we completely find the rough tail asymptotics of the marginal stationary distributions in all directions. This generalizes the corresponding results for the …
We study moderate deviations in the exponential corner growth model, both in the bulk setting and the increment-stationary setting. The main results are sharp right-tail bounds on the last-passage time and the exit point of the increment-stationary process. The arguments utilize calculations with the stationary version and a moment generating function identity due to E. Rains, for which we give a short probabilistic proof. As applications of the deviation bounds, we derive upper bounds on the speed of distributional convergence in the Busemann function and competition interface limits.
We prove large deviation results for sums of heavy-tailed random elements in rather general convex cones being semigroups equipped with a rescaling operation by positive real numbers. In difference to previous results for the cone of convex sets, our technique does not use the embedding of cones in linear spaces. Examples include the cone of convex sets with the Minkowski addition, positive half-line with maximum operation and the family of square integrable functions with arithmetic addition and argument rescaling.
In this paper, we consider a two-dimensional sticky Brownian motion. Sticky Brownian motions can be viewed as time-changed semimartingale reflecting Brownian motions, which find applications in many areas including queueing theory and mathematical finance. For example, a sticky Brownian motion can be used to model a storage system.with exceptional services. In this paper, we focus on stationary distributions for sticky Brownian motions. The main results obtained here include tail asymptotic properties in boundary stationary distributions, marginal distributions, and joint distributions. The ke…
A large deviations principle is established for the joint law of the empirical measure and the flow measure of a renewal Markov process on a finite graph. We do not assume any bound on the arrival times, allowing heavy tailed distributions. In particular, the rate functional is in general degenerate (it has a nontrivial set of zeros) and not strictly convex. These features show a behavior highly different from what one may guess with a heuristic Donsker-Varadhan analysis of the problem.
This paper presents a new, short proof of the computation of the upper tail large deviation rate function for the Brownian directed percolation model. Through a distributional equivalence between the last passage time in this model and the largest eigenvalue in a random matrix drawn from the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble, this provides a new proof a previously known result. The method leads to associated results for the stationary Brownian directed percolation model which have not been observed before.
In this paper, we revisit the proof of the large deviations principle of Wiener chaoses partially given by Borel, and then by Ledoux in its full form. We show that some heavy-tail phenomena observed in large deviations can be explained by the same mechanism as for the Wiener chaoses, meaning that the deviations are created, in a sense, by translations. More precisely, we prove a general large deviations principle for a certain class of functionals $f_n : \mathbb{R}^n \to \mathcal{X}$, where $\mathcal{X}$ is some metric space, under the $n$-fold probability measure $ν_α^n$, where $ν_α =Y_α^{-1}…
This work is denoted to studying the tail behavior of Cox-Ingersoll-Ross (CIR) processes with regime-switching. One essential difference shown in this work between CIR process with regime-switching and without regime-switching is that the stationary distribution for CIR process with regime-switching could be heavy-tailed. Our results provide a theoretical evidence of the existence of regime-switching for interest rates model based on its heavy-tailed empirical evidence. In this work, we first provide sharp criteria to justify the existence of stationary distribution for the CIR process with re…
We establish a large deviation principle for the empirical spectral measure of a sample covariance matrix with sub-Gaussian entries, which extends Bordenave and Caputo's result for Wigner matrices having the same type of entries [7]. To this aim, we need to establish an asymptotic freeness result for rectangular free convolution, more precisely, we give a bound in the subordination formula for information-plus-noise matrices.
Consider an multidimensional obliquely reflected Brownian motion in the positive orthant, or, more generally, in a convex polyhedral cone. We find sufficient conditions for existence of a stationary distribution and convergence to this distribution at the exponential rate, as time goes to infinity. We also prove that certain exponential moments for this distribution are finite, thus providing a tail estimate for this distribution. Finally, we apply these results to systems of rank-based competing Brownian particles.
This study aims to develop the limit theorems on the sample autocovariances and sample autocorrelations for certain stationary infinitely divisible processes. We consider the case where the infinitely divisible process has heavy tail marginals and is generated by a conservative flow. Interestingly, the growth rate of the sample autocovariances is determined by not only heavy tailedness of the marginals but also memory length of the process. Although this feature was first observed by \cite{resnick:samorodnitsky:xue:2000} for some very specific processes, we will propose a more general framewor…
This paper studies the effect of truncation on the large deviations behavior of the partial sum of a triangular array coming from a truncated power law model. Each row of the triangular array consists of i.i.d. random vectors, whose distribution matches a power law on a ball of radius going to infinity, and outside that it has a light-tailed modification. The random vectors are assumed to be R^d-valued. It turns out that there are two regimes depending on the growth rate of the truncating threshold, so that in one regime, much of the heavy tailedness is retained, while in the other regime, the…
We consider a discrete-time two-dimensional quasi-birth-and-death process (2d-QBD process for short) $\{(\boldsymbol{X}_n,J_n)\}$ on $\mathbb{Z}_+^2\times S_0$, where $\boldsymbol{X}_n=(X_{1,n},X_{2,n})$ is the level state, $J_n$ the phase state (background state) and $S_0$ a finite set, and study asymptotic properties of the stationary tail distribution. The 2d-QBD process is an extension of usual one-dimensional QBD process. By using the matrix analytic method of the queueing theory and the complex analytic method, we obtain the asymptotic decay rate of the stationary tail distribution in an…
Using an intrinsic approach, we study some properties of random fields which appear as tail fields of regularly varying stationary random fields. The index set is allowed to be a general locally compact Hausdorff Abelian group $\mathbb{G}$. The values are taken in a measurable cone, equipped with a pseudo norm. We first discuss some Palm formulas for the exceedance random measure $ξ$ associated with a stationary (measurable) random field $Y=(Y_s)_{s\in \mathbb{G}}$. It is important to allow the underlying stationary measure to be $σ$-finite. Then we proceed to a random field (defined on a prob…
We prove the Freidlin-Wentzell type large deviations principle for the family of stationary measures of stochastic nonlinear wave (NLW) equation with white noise. We do not assume that the limiting equation possesses a unique equilibrium and do not impose roughness on the noise. This allows to provide the first such result in the PDE setting.
We prove large deviation results for the position of the rightmost particle, denoted by $M_n$, in a one-dimensional branching random walk in a case when Cramér's condition is not satisfied. More precisely we consider step size distributions with stretched exponential upper and lower tails, i.e.~both tails decay as $e^{-|t|^r}$ for some $r\in( 0,1)$. It is known that in this case, $M_n$ grows as $n^{1/r}$ and in particular faster than linearly in $n$. Our main result is a large deviation principle for the laws of $n^{-1/r}M_n$ . In the proof we use a comparison with the maximum of (a random num…
Consider the partition function of a directed polymer in an IID field. We assume that both tails of the negative and the positive part of the field are at least as light as exponential. It is a well-known fact that the free energy of the polymer is equal to a deterministic constant for almost every realization of the field and that the upper tail of the large deviations is exponential. The lower tail of the large deviations is typically lighter than exponential. In this paper we provide a method to obtain estimates on the rate of decay of the lower tail of the large deviations, which are sharp…
Employing the optimal fluctuation method (OFM), we study the large deviation function of long-time averages $(1/T)\int_{-T/2}^{T/2} x^n(t) dt$, $n=1,2, \dots$, of centered stationary Gaussian processes. These processes are correlated and, in general, non-Markovian. We show that the anomalous scaling with time of the large-deviation function, recently observed for $n>2$ for the particular case of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process, holds for a whole class of stationary Gaussian processes.
We investigate the large deviation behaviour of a point process sequence based on a stationary symmetric stable non-Gaussian discrete-parameter random field using the framework of Hult and Samorodnitsky (2010). Depending on the ergodic theoretic and group theoretic structures of the underlying nonsingular group action, we observe different large deviation behaviours of this point process sequence. We use our results to study the large deviations of various functionals (e.g., partial sum, maxima, etc.) of stationary symmetric stable fields.
In this paper we consider the first passage percolation with identical and independent exponentially distributions, called the Eden growth model, and we study the upper tail large deviations for the first passage time ${\rm T}$. Our main results prove that for any $ξ>0$ and $x\neq 0$, $\mathbb{P}({\rm T}(0,nx)>n(μ+ξ))$ decays as $\exp{(-(2dξ+o(1))n)}$ with a time constant $μ$ and a dimension $d$. Moreover, we extend the result to stretched exponential distributions. On the contrary, we construct a continuous distribution with a finite exponential moment where the rate function does not exist.
