In the paper we prove that every automorphism of a (elementary) Chevalley group of type $A_l, D_l$, or $E_l$, $l\geqslant 2$, over a commutative local ring with 1/2 is standard, i. e., is the composition of inner, ring, graph and central automorphisms.
In the paper we prove that every automorphism of any adjoint Chevalley group of types B_2 or G_2 is standard, i.e., it is a composition of the ``inner'' automorphism, ring automorphism and central automorphism.
In the paper we prove that every automorphism of a Chevalley group of type $F_4$ over a commutative local ring with~1/2 is standard, i. e., it is a composition of ring and inner automorphisms.
In the given paper we prove that every automorphism of a Chevalley group of type $B_l$, $l\geqslant 2$, over a commutative local ring with 1/2 is standard, i. e., it is a composition of ring, inner and central automorphisms.
In the given paper we prove that every automorphism of a Chevalley group of type $A_l$, $D_l$, or $E_l$, $l\geqslant 3$, over a commutative local ring without 1/2 is standard, i. e., it is a composition of ring, inner, central and graph automorphisms.
We prove that every isomorphism of Chevalley groups of type $G_2$ over commutative local rings with 1/2 and 1/3 is standard, i. e., it is a composition of a ring isomorphism and an inner automorphism.
In this paper we prove that every automorphism of (elementary) adjoint Chevalley group with root system of rank $>1$ over a commutative ring (with 1/2 for the systems $A_2$, $F_4$, $B_l$, $C_l$; with 1/2 and 1/3 for the system $G_2$) is standard, i.\,e., it is a composition of ring, inner, central and graph automorphisms.
An adjoint Chevalley group of rank at least 2 over a rational algebra (or a similar ring), its elementary subgroup, and the corresponding Lie ring have the same automorphism group. These automorphisms are explicitly described.
In the paper we prove that every automorphism of and elementary adjoint Chevalley group of types $A_l, D_l$, or $E_l$, over local commutative ring with 1/2 is a composition of a ring automorphism and conjugation by some matrix from the normalizer of the Chevalley group in $\GL(V)$ ($V$ is the adjoint representation space).
Let $M^*(q)$ be the unique nonassociative finite simple Moufang loop constructed over $GF(q)$. We prove that $Aut(M^*(2))$ is the Chevalley group $G_2(2)$, by extending multiplicative automorphism of $M^*(2)$ into linear automorphisms of the unique split octonion algebra over GF(2). Many of our auxiliary results apply in the general case. In the course of the proof we show that every element of a split octonion algebra can be written as a sum of two elements of norm one.
We prove that Chevalley group over the field $F$ of zero characteristic possess $R_{\infty}$ property, if $F$ has torsion group of automorphisms or $F$ is an algebraically closed field which has finite transcendence degree over $\mathbb{Q}$. As a consequence we obtain that the twisted conjugacy class $[e]_φ$ of unit element is a subgroup of Chevalley group if and only if $φ$ is central automorphism.
Let $\hat G$ be the finite simply connected version of an exceptional Chevalley group, and let $V$ be a nontrivial irreducible module, of minimal dimension, for $\hat G$ over its field of definition. We explore the overgroup structure of $\hat G$ in $\mathrm{GL}(V)$, and the submodule structure of the exterior square (and sometimes the third Lie power) of $V$. When $\hat G$ is defined over a field of odd prime order $p$, this allows us to construct the smallest (with respect to certain properties) $p$-groups $P$ such that the group induced by $\mathrm{Aut}(P)$ on $P/Φ(P)$ is either $\hat G$ or…
An estimate on the commutator width is given for Chevalley groups over rings of stable rank 1, and the general method suitable for other rings of small dimension.
We prove the centrality of the congruence kernel for the elementary subgroup of a Chevalley group G of rank >1 over an arbitrary noetherian ring R (under some minor restrictions on R if G is of type C_n or G_2).
We prove that Chevalley groups of the classical series $B_l, C_l, D_l$ over an integral domain of zero characteristic, which has torsion automorphism group, possess the $R_{\infty}$-property.
We provide an explicit construction for a class of commutative, non-associative algebras for each of the simple Chevalley groups of simply laced type. Moreover, we equip these algebras with an associating bilinear form, which turns them into Frobenius algebras. This class includes a 3876-dimensional algebra on which the Chevalley group of type E8 acts by automorphisms. We also prove that these algebras admit the structure of (axial) decomposition algebras.
Let $p$ be an odd prime. We construct a $p$-group $P$ of nilpotency class two, rank seven and exponent $p$, such that $\mathrm{Aut}(P)$ induces $N_{\mathrm{GL}(7,p)}(G_2(p)) = Z(\mathrm{GL}(7,p)) G_2(p)$ on the Frattini quotient $P/Φ(P)$. The constructed group $P$ is the smallest $p$-group with these properties, having order $p^{14}$, and when $p = 3$, our construction gives two nonisomorphic $p$-groups. To show that $P$ satisfies the specified properties, we study the action of $G_2(q)$ on the octonion algebra over $\mathbb{F}_q$, for each power $q$ of $p$, and explore the reducibility of the…
We prove that Chevalley groups over polynomial rings $\mathbb F_q[t]$ and over Laurent polynomial $\mathbb F_q[t,t^{-1}]$ rings, where $\mathbb F_q$ is a finite field, are boundedly elementarily generated. Using this we produce explicit bounds of the commutator width of these groups. Under some additional assumptions, we prove similar results for other classes of Chevalley groups over Dedekind rings of arithmetic rings in positive characteristic. As a corollary, we produce explicit estimates for the commutator width of affine Kac--Moody groups defined over finite fields. The paper contains als…
Let $G$ be the universal Chevalley-Demazure group scheme corresponding to a reduced irreducible root system of rank $\geq 2$, and let $R$ be a commutative ring. We analyze the linear representations $ρ\colon G(R)^+ \to GL_n (K)$ over an algebraically closed field $K$ of the elementary subgroup $G(R)^+ \subset G(R).$ Our main result is that under certain conditions, any such representation has a standard description, i.e. there exists a commutative finite-dimensional $K$-algebra $B$, a ring homomorphism $f \colon R \to B$ with Zariski-dense image, and a morphism of algebraic groups $σ\colon G(B…
Let R be a Dedekind domain, and let G be a simply connected Chevalley-Demazure group scheme of rank =>2. We prove that G(R[x_1,...,x_n])=G(R)E(R[x_1,...,x_n]) for any n=>1. This extends the corresponding results of A. Suslin and F. Grunewald, J. Mennicke, and L. Vaserstein for G=SL_n, Sp_2n. We also deduce some corollaries of the above result for regular rings R of higher dimension and discrete Hodge algebras over R.
In this paper we prove that if $G(R)=G_π(Φ,R)$ $(E(R)=E_π(Φ, R))$ is an (elementary) Chevalley group of rank $> 1$, $R$ is a local ring (with $\frac{1}{2}$ for the root systems ${\mathbf A}_2, {\mathbf B}_l, {\mathbf C}_l, {\mathbf F}_4, {\mathbf G}_2$ and with $\frac{1}{3}$ for ${\mathbf G}_{2})$, then the group $G(R)$ (or $(E(R)$) is regularly bi-interpretable with the ring~$R$. As a consequence of this theorem, we show that the class of all Chevalley groups over local rings (with the listed restrictions) is elementary definable, i.\,e., if for an arbitrary group~$H$ we have $H\equiv G_π(Φ, …
We show that if G is a Chevalley group of rank n and F_q[t,t^{-1}] is the ring of Laurent polynomials over a finite field, then G(F_q[t,t^{-1}]) is of type F_{2n-1}. This bound is optimal because it is known -- and we show again -- that the group is not of type F_{2n}.
Bounded generation by root elements is a property which has been widely studied for various types of linear algebraic groups defined over rings of integers in algebraic number fields. However, when considering global function fields, there are not many results beyond the treatment of special cases due to Nica and Queen. In this paper, we use model theoretic methods due to Carter, Keller and Paige written up by Morris to prove bounded generation by root elements for simply connected, split Chevalley groups defined over the ring of all integers in a global function field. We further apply this b…
It is known from work by H. Abels and P. Abramenko that for a classical Fq-group G of rank n the arithemetic lattice G(Fq[t]) of Fq[t]-rational points is of type Fn-1 provided that q is large enough. We show that the statement is true without any assumption on q and for any isotropic, absolutely almost simple group G defined over Fq.
In this article, we show that if G is a simply connected Chevalley group of either classical type of rank bigger than 1 or type E6, and q > 9 is a power of a prime number p > 5, then G = G(F_q((1/t))), up to an automorphism, has a unique lattice of minimum covolume, which is G(F_q[t]).
Let $F$ be a non-Archimedean local field with the ring of integers $\mathcal{O}$ and the prime ideal $\mathfrak{p}$ and let $G={\bf G}\left(\mathcal{O}/\mathfrak{p}^n\right)$ be the adjoint Chevalley group. Let $m_f(G)$ denote the smallest possible dimension of a faithful representation of $G$. Using the Stone-von Neumann theorem, we determine a lower bound for $m_f(G)$ which is asymptotically the same as the results of Landazuri, Seitz and Zalesskii for split Chevalley groups over $\mathbb{F}_q$. Our result yields a conceptual explanation of the exponents that appear in the aforementioned res…
Chevalley's theorem and it's converse, the Sheppard-Todd theorem, assert that finite reflection groups are distinguished by the fact that the ring of invariant polynomials is freely generated. We show that in the Euclidean case, a weaker condition suffices to characterize finite reflection groups, namely that a freely-generated polynomial subring is closed with respect to the gradient product.
The goal of this paper is to establish a general rigidity statement for abstract representations of elementary subgroups of Chevalley groups of rank at least 2 over a class of commutative rings that includes the localizations of 1-generated rings and the coordinate rings of affine curves. This is achieved by developing the approach introduced in our previous work, and in particular by verifying condition (Z) over the class of rings at hand. Our main result implies, for example, that any finite-dimensional representation of SL_n(Z[X]) (for n at least 3) over an algebraically closed field of cha…
To each automorphism of a spherical building there is naturally associated an "opposition diagram", which encodes the types of the simplices of the building that are mapped onto opposite simplices. If no chamber (that is, no maximal simplex) of the building is mapped onto an opposite chamber then the automorphism is called "domestic". In this paper we give the complete classification of domestic automorphisms of split spherical buildings of types $\mathsf{E}_6$, $\mathsf{F}_4$, and $\mathsf{G}_2$. Moreover, for all split spherical buildings of exceptional type we classify (i) the domestic homo…
This survey on the automorphism groups of finite p-groups focuses on three major topics: explicit computations for familiar finite p-groups, such as the extraspecial p-groups and Sylow p-subgroups of Chevalley groups; constructing p-groups with specified automorphism groups; and the discovery of finite p-groups whose automorphism groups are or are not p-groups themselves. The material is presented with varying levels of detail, with some of the examples given in complete detail.
We formulate and prove relative versions of several classical decompositions known in the theory of Chevalley groups over commutative rings. As an application we obtain upper estimates for the width of principal congruence subgroups in terms of several families of generators. Some of our results are new even in the absolute case and were previously studied only for groups over finite fields.
Let G be a Chevalley group scheme of rank l. We show that the following holds for some absolute constant d>0 and two functions p_0=p_0(l) and C=C(l,p). Let p>p_0 be a prime number and let G_n:=G(\Z/p^n\Z) be the family of finite groups for n>0. Then for any n>0 and any subset S which generates G_n we have diam(G_n,S)< C n^d, i.e., any element of G_n is a product of Cn^d elements from S\cup S^{-1}. In particular, for some C'=C'(l,p) and for any n>0 we have, diam(G_n,S)< C' log^d(|G_n|). Our proof is elementary and effective, in the sense that the constant d and the functions p_0(l) and C(l,p) a…
The Table of the Structure Constants for the Complex Simple Lie Algebra of Type F_4 and its Application to the Calculation of Commutators in the Chevalley Group of Type F_4 over Fields and Rings
We consider the simply connected Chevalley group $G(E_7,R)$ of type $E_7$ in the 56-dimensional representation. The main objective of the paper is to prove that the following four groups coincide: the normalizer of the elementary Chevalley group $E(E_7,R)$, the normalizer of the Chevalley group $G(E_7,R)$ itself, the transporter of $E(E_7,R)$ into $G(\mathrm E_7,R)$, and the extended Chevalley group $\overline G(E_7,R)$. This holds over an arbitrary commutative ring $R$, with all normalizers and transporters being calculated in $GL(56,R)$. Moreover, we characterize $\overline G(E_7,R)$ as the …
In these notes we determine the finiteness length of the groups G(O_S) where G is an F_q-isotropic, connected, noncommutative, almost simple F_q-group and O_S is one of F_q[t], F_q[t^{-1}], and F_q[t,t^{-1}]. That is, k = F_q(t) and S contains one or both of the places s_0 and s_\infty corresponding to the polynomial p(t) = t respectively to the point at infinity. The statement is that the finiteness length of G(O_S) is n-1 if S contains one of the two places and is 2n-1 if it contains both places, where n is the F_q-rank of G. For example, the group SL_3(F_q[t,t^{-1}]) is of type F_3 but not …
Lately, the following problem has attracted a lot of attention in various contexts: find the shortest factorisation $G=UU^-UU^-...U^{\pm}$ of a Chevalley group $G=G(Φ,R)$ in terms of the unipotent radical $U=U(Φ,R)$ of the standard Borel subgroup $B=B(Φ,R)$ and the unipotent radical $U^-=U^-(Φ,R)$ of the opposite Borel subgroup $B^-=B^-(Φ,R)$. So far, the record over a finite field was established in a 2010 paper by Babai, Nikolov, and Pyber, where they prove that a group of Lie type admits unitriangular factorisation $G=UU^-UU^-U$ of length 5. Their proof invokes deep analytic and combinatori…
In 1993, Muzychuk \cite{muzychuk} showed that the rational Schur rings over a cyclic group $Z_n$ are in one-to-one correspondence with sublattices of the divisor lattice of $n$, or equivalently, with sublattices of the lattice of subgroups of $Z_n$. This can easily be extended to show that for any finite group $G$, sublattices of the lattice of characteristic subgroups of $G$ give rise to rational Schur rings over $G$ in a natural way. Our main result is that any finite group may be represented as the (algebraic) automorphism group of such a rational Schur ring over an abelian $p$-group, for a…
For a root system $Φ$ of type $E_l$ and arbitrary commutative ring $R$ we show that the group $K_2(Φ, R)$ is contained in the centre of the Steinberg group $St(Φ, R)$. In course of the proof we also demonstrate an analogue of Quillen---Suslin local-global principle for $K_2(Φ, R)$.
Given a universal elementary Chevalley-Demazure group $E_Φ^{sc}(R)$ for which its (standard) parabolic subgroups are finitely generated, we consider the problem of classifying which parabolics $P(R) \subset E_Φ^{sc}(R)$ are finitely presented. We show that, under mild assumptions, this is equivalent to the finite presentability of a suitable retract of $P$ which contains the Levi factor. If the base ring $R$ is a Dedekind domain of arithmetic type, we combine our results with well-known theorems due to Borel-Serre, Abels, Behr and Bux to give a partial classification of finitely presentable $S…
