We show that if G is a Chevalley group of rank n and F_q[t,t^{-1}] is the ring of Laurent polynomials over a finite field, then G(F_q[t,t^{-1}]) is of type F_{2n-1}. This bound is optimal because it is known -- and we show again -- that the group is not of type F_{2n}.

Finiteness Properties of Chevalley Groups over a Polynomial Ring over a Finite Field

It is known from work by H. Abels and P. Abramenko that for a classical Fq-group G of rank n the arithemetic lattice G(Fq[t]) of Fq[t]-rational points is of type Fn-1 provided that q is large enough. We show that the statement is true without any assumption on q and for any isotropic, absolutely almost simple group G defined over Fq.

In these notes we determine the finiteness length of the groups G(O_S) where G is an F_q-isotropic, connected, noncommutative, almost simple F_q-group and O_S is one of F_q[t], F_q[t^{-1}], and F_q[t,t^{-1}]. Finiteness Properties of S-Arithmetic Groups - a Survey

We give an overview about finiteness properties of soluble S-arithmetic groups. Both, the number field case and the function field case are covered. The main result is: If B is a Borel subgroup in a Chevalley group and R is an S-arithmetic ring, then the group B(R) has finiteness length |S|-1 in the function field case, and infinite finiteness length in the number field case.

Bounded generation and commutator width of Chevalley groups: function case

We prove that Chevalley groups over polynomial rings $\mathbb F_q[t]$ and over Laurent polynomial $\mathbb F_q[t,t^{-1}]$ rings, where $\mathbb F_q$ is a finite field, are boundedly elementarily generated. Using this we produce explicit bounds of the commutator width of these groups. Under some additional assumptions, we prove similar results for other classes of Chevalley groups over Dedekind rings of arithmetic rings in positive characteristic. Quantifying Residual Finiteness of Linear Groups

Normal residual finiteness growth measures how well a finitely generated group is approximated by its finite quotients. We show that any linear group $Γ\leq \mathrm{GL}_d(K)$ has normal residual finiteness growth asymptotically bounded above by $(n\log n)^{d^2-1}$; notably this bound depends only on the degree of linearity of $Γ$. Finiteness properties of soluble arithmetic groups over global function fields

Let G be a Chevalley group scheme and B<=G a Borel subgroup scheme, both defined over Z. Let K be a global function field, S be a finite non-empty set of places over K, and O_S be the corresponding S-arithmetic ring. Then, the S-arithmetic group B(O_S) is of type F_{|S|-1} but not of type FP_{|S|}. Moreover one can derive lower and upper bounds for the geometric invariants Σ^m(B(O_S)). These are sharp if G has rank 1. For higher ranks, the estimates imply that normal subgroups of B(O_S) with abelian quotients, generically, satisfy strong finiteness conditions.

Homological finiteness in the Johnson filtration of the automorphism group of a free group

We examine the Johnson filtration of the (outer) automorphism group of a finitely generated group. In the case of a free group, we find a surprising result: the first Betti number of the second subgroup in the Johnson filtration is finite. Moreover, the corresponding Alexander invariant is a non-trivial module over the Laurent polynomial ring. In the process, we show that the first resonance variety of the outer Torelli group of a free group is trivial. We also establish a general relationship between the Alexander invariant and its infinitesimal counterpart.
