This paper is concerned with the diameter of certain word norms on S-arithmetic split Chevalley groups. Such groups are well known to be boundedly generated by root elements. We prove that word metrics given by conjugacy classes on S-arithmetic split Chevalley groups have an upper bound only depending on the number of conjugacy classes. This property, called strong boundedness, was introduced by Kedra, Libmann and Martin and proven for ${\rm SL}_n(R)$, assuming R is a principal ideal domain and $n\geq 3$. We also provide examples of normal generating sets for S-arithmetic split Chevalley groups proving our bounds are sharp in an appropriate sense and give a complete account of obstructions to the existence of small normally generating sets of ${\rm Sp}_4(R)$ and $G_2(R)$. For instance, we prove that ${\rm Sp}_4(\mathbb{Z}[\frac{1+\sqrt{-7}}{2}])$ cannot be generated by a single conjugacy class.
Bounded generation by root elements is a property which has been widely studied for various types of linear algebraic groups defined over rings of integers in algebraic number fields. However, when considering global function fields, there are not many results beyond the treatment of special cases due to Nica and Queen. In this paper, we use model theoretic methods due to Carter, Keller and Paige written up by Morris to prove bounded generation by root elements for simply connected, split Chevalley groups defined over the ring of all integers in a global function field. We further apply this b…
We provide an explicit construction for a class of commutative, non-associative algebras for each of the simple Chevalley groups of simply laced type. Moreover, we equip these algebras with an associating bilinear form, which turns them into Frobenius algebras. This class includes a 3876-dimensional algebra on which the Chevalley group of type E8 acts by automorphisms. We also prove that these algebras admit the structure of (axial) decomposition algebras.
Let $\hat G$ be the finite simply connected version of an exceptional Chevalley group, and let $V$ be a nontrivial irreducible module, of minimal dimension, for $\hat G$ over its field of definition. We explore the overgroup structure of $\hat G$ in $\mathrm{GL}(V)$, and the submodule structure of the exterior square (and sometimes the third Lie power) of $V$. When $\hat G$ is defined over a field of odd prime order $p$, this allows us to construct the smallest (with respect to certain properties) $p$-groups $P$ such that the group induced by $\mathrm{Aut}(P)$ on $P/Φ(P)$ is either $\hat G$ or…
In this article, we show that if G is a simply connected Chevalley group of either classical type of rank bigger than 1 or type E6, and q > 9 is a power of a prime number p > 5, then G = G(F_q((1/t))), up to an automorphism, has a unique lattice of minimum covolume, which is G(F_q[t]).
Let R be a Dedekind domain, and let G be a simply connected Chevalley-Demazure group scheme of rank =>2. We prove that G(R[x_1,...,x_n])=G(R)E(R[x_1,...,x_n]) for any n=>1. This extends the corresponding results of A. Suslin and F. Grunewald, J. Mennicke, and L. Vaserstein for G=SL_n, Sp_2n. We also deduce some corollaries of the above result for regular rings R of higher dimension and discrete Hodge algebras over R.
We continue study of subgroups of a Chevalley group $G_P(Φ,R)$ over a ring $R$ with a root system $Φ$ and a weight lattice $P$, containing the elementary subgroup $E_P(Φ,K)$ over a subring $K$ of $R$. Recently A. Bak and A. Stepanov considered the symplectic case (i. e. the case of simply connected group of type $Φ=C_l$) in characteristic 2. In this article we extend their result for groups with arbitrary weight lattice of types $B_l$ and $C_l$. Similarly to the work of Nuzhin that handles the case of an algebraic extension $R$ of a nonperfect field $K$ of bad characteristic, we use in the des…
In the 1960's Noboru Iwahori and Hideya Matsumoto, Eiichi Abe and Kazuo Suzuki, and Michael Stein discovered that Chevalley groups $G=G(Φ,R)$ over a semilocal ring admit remarkable Gauss decomposition $G=TUU^-U$, where $T=T(Φ,R)$ is a split maximal torus, whereas $U=U(Φ,R)$ and $U^-=U^-(Φ,R)$ are unipotent radicals of two opposite Borel subgroups $B=B(Φ,R)$ and $B^-=B^-(Φ,R)$ containing $T$. It follows from the classical work of Hyman Bass and Michael Stein that for classical groups Gauss decomposition holds under weaker assumptions such as $\sr(R)=1$ or $\asr(R)=1$. Later the second author no…
Let $Φ$ be an irreducible root system (other than $G_2$) of rank at least $2$, let $\mathbb{F}$ be a finite field with $p = \operatorname{char} \mathbb{F} > 3$, and let $\mathrm{G}(Φ,\mathbb{F})$ be the corresponding Chevalley group. We describe a strongly explicit high-dimensional expander (HDX) family of dimension $\mathrm{rank}(Φ)$, where $\mathrm{G}(Φ,\mathbb{F})$ acts simply transitively on the top-dimensional faces; these are $λ$-spectral HDXs with $λ\to 0$ as $p \to \infty$. This generalizes a construction of Kaufman and Oppenheim (STOC 2018), which corresponds to the case $Φ= A_d$. Our…
We consider the simply connected Chevalley group $G(E_7,R)$ of type $E_7$ in the 56-dimensional representation. The main objective of the paper is to prove that the following four groups coincide: the normalizer of the elementary Chevalley group $E(E_7,R)$, the normalizer of the Chevalley group $G(E_7,R)$ itself, the transporter of $E(E_7,R)$ into $G(\mathrm E_7,R)$, and the extended Chevalley group $\overline G(E_7,R)$. This holds over an arbitrary commutative ring $R$, with all normalizers and transporters being calculated in $GL(56,R)$. Moreover, we characterize $\overline G(E_7,R)$ as the …
A group is called strongly bounded, if the speed with which it is generated by finitely many conjugacy classes has a positive, lower bound only dependent on the number of the conjugacy classes in question rather than the actual conjugacy classes. Earlier papers by Kedra, Libman and Martin and myself have shown that this is a property common to split Chevalley groups defined using an irreducible root system of rank at least $2$ and the ring of all S-algebraic integers and that the situation is dependent on the number theory of $R$ for ${\rm Sp}_4$ and $G_2.$ In this paper, we will show that ${\…
Let $G$ be a simply-connected semisimple algebraic group scheme over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p > 0$. Let $r \geq 1$ and set $q = p^r$. We show that if a rational $G$-module $M$ is projective over the $r$-th Frobenius kernel $G_r$ of $G$, then it is also projective when considered as a module for the finite subgroup $\Gfq$ of $\Fq$-rational points in $G$. This salvages a theorem of Lin and Nakano (\emph{Bull.\ London Math.\ Soc.} 39 (2007) 1019--1028). We also show that the corresponding statement need not hold when the group $G$ is replaced by the unipotent radical $U$…
We begin with a review of the structure of simple, simply-connected complex Lie groups and their Lie algebras, describe the Chevalley lattice and the associated split group over the integers. This gives us a hyperspecial maximal compact subgroup of the p-adic Lie group and we describe the other maximal parahoric subgroups and their Lie algebras starting from the hyperspecial one. We then consider the Killing form on the Chevalley lattice and show that it is divisible by 2 times the dual Coxeter number. The same holds for the Lie algebras of the other maximal parahorics. We compute the discrimi…
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p > 0$, and let $G$ be a simple simply-connected algebraic group over $k$ that is defined and split over the prime field $\mathbb{F}_p$. In this paper we investigate situations where the dimension of a rational cohomology group for $G$ can be bounded by a constant times the dimension of the coefficient module. We then demonstrate how our results can be applied to obtain effective bounds on the first cohomology of the symmetric group. We also show how, for finite Chevalley groups, our methods permit significant improvements over previo…
Tits has defined Kac-Moody and Steinberg groups over commutative rings, providing infinite dimensional analogues of the Chevalley-Demazure group schemes. Here we establish simple explicit presentations for all Steinberg and Kac-Moody groups whose Dynkin diagrams are hyperbolic and simply laced. Our presentations are analogues of the Curtis-Tits presentation of the finite groups of Lie type. When the ground ring is finitely generated, we derive the finite presentability of the Steinberg group, and similarly for the Kac-Moody group when the ground ring is a Dedekind domain of arithmetic type. Th…
Let G be a split real Kac-Moody group of arbitrary type and let K be its maximal compact subgroup, i.e. the subgroup of elements fixed by a Cartan-Chevalley involution of G. We construct non-trivial spin covers of K, thus confirming a conjecture by Damour and Hillmann (arXiv:0906.3116). For irreducible simply laced diagrams and for all spherical diagrams these spin covers are two-fold central extensions of K. For more complicated irreducible diagrams these spin covers are central extensions by a finite 2-group of possibly larger cardinality. Our construction is amalgam-theoretic and makes use …
