In order to investigate the systematics of the loop expansion in high temperature gauge theories beyond the leading order hard thermal loop (HTL) approximation, we calculate the two-loop electron proper self-energy in high temperature QED. The two-loop bubble diagram contains a linear infrared divergence. Even if regulated with a non-zero photon mass M of order of the Debye mass, this infrared sensitivity implies that the two-loop self-energy contributes terms to the fermion dispersion relation that are comparable to or even larger than the next-to-leading-order (NLO) contributions at one-loop. Additional evidence for the necessity of a systematic restructuring of the loop expansion comes from the explicit gauge parameter dependence of the fermion damping rate at both one and two-loops. The leading terms in the high temperature expansion of the two-loop self-energy for all topologies arise from an explicit hard-soft factorization pattern, in which one of the loop integrals is hard, nested inside a second loop integral which is soft. There are no hard-hard contributions to the two-loop Sigma at leading order at high T. Provided the same factorization pattern holds for arbitrary ell loops, the NLO high temperature contributions to the electron self-energy come from ell-1 hard loops factorized with one soft loop integral. This hard-soft pattern is both a necessary condition for the resummation over ell to coincide with the one-loop self-energy calculated with HTL dressed propagators and vertices, and to yield the complete NLO correction to the self-energy at scales ~eT, which is both infrared finite and gauge invariant. We employ spectral representations and the Gaudin method for evaluating finite temperature Matsubara sums, which facilitates the analysis of multi-loop diagrams at high T.
We apply the supergraph with spurion technique to compute the renormalization of one-loop diagrams that contributes to electron and selectron self energies in a softly broken Supersymmetric Quantum Electrodynamics (SQED). In particular, we calculate the one-loop gauge superfield contribution to the two-point function.
We calculate higher-order quantum contributions in different Lorentz-violating parameters to the gauge sector of the extended QED. As a result of this one-loop calculation, some terms which do not produce first-order corrections, contribute with nontrivial gauge-invariant second-order quantum inductions.
We present the results of analytical calculations of the 3-loop contributions to the asymptotic photon vacuum polarization function, in the on shell scheme, and of the 4-loop contributions to the on shell QED beta-function. These are used to evaluate various 4-loop and 5-loop contributions to the muon anomaly. Our analytical contributions to (g-2)_μdiffer significantly from previous numerical results. A very recent numerical re-evaluation of 4-loop muon-anomaly contributions has yielded results much closer to ours.
We compute the effective action of QED at one loop order for an electric field which points in the $\hat{z}$ direction and depends arbitrarily upon the light cone time coordinate, $x^+ = (x^0 + x^3)/\sqrt{2}$. This calculation generalizes Schwinger's formula for the vacuum persistence probability in the presence of a constant electric field.
We calculate the two-loop effective action of QED for arbitrary constant electromagnetic fields at finite temperature T in the limit of T much smaller than the electron mass. It is shown that in this regime the two-loop contribution always exceeds the influence of the one-loop part due to the thermal excitation of the internal photon. As an application, we study light propagation and photon splitting in the presence of a magnetic background field at low temperature. We furthermore discover a thermally induced contribution to pair production in electric fields.
We use the worldline path-integral approach to the Bern-Kosower formalism for developing a new algorithm for calculation of the sum of all diagrams with one spinor loop and fixed numbers of external and internal photons. The method is based on worldline supersymmetry, and on the construction of generalized worldline Green functions. The two-loop QED $β$ -- function is calculated as an example.
We analyze the relation between the short-distance behavior of quantum field theory and the strong-field limit of the background field formalism, for QED effective Lagrangians in self-dual backgrounds, at both one and two loop. The self-duality of the background leads to zero modes in the case of spinor QED, and these zero modes must be taken into account before comparing the perturbative beta function coefficients and the coefficients of the strong-field limit of the effective Lagrangian. At one-loop this is familiar from instanton physics, but we find that at two-loop the role of the zero mo…
We study the divergence of large-order perturbation theory in the worldline expression for the two-loop Euler-Heisenberg QED effective Lagrangian in a constant magnetic field. The leading rate of divergence is identical, up to an overall factor, to that of the one-loop case. From this we deduce, using Borel summation techniques, that the leading behaviour of the imaginary part of the two-loop effective Lagrangian for a constant E field, giving the pair-production rate, is proportional to the one-loop result. This also serves as a test of the mass renormalization, and confirms the earlier analy…
We revisit the proof of equivalence of one loop expressions for fermion self-energy and vertex correction in light-front QED and Covariant QED at the Feynman diagram level and generalize, to all components, the proof of equivalence for the one loop vertex correction diagram which was presented earlier by us only for the $+$ component of $Λ^μ$. We demonstrate, in the general case also, that the equivalence cannot be established without the third term in the three-term photon propagator in light cone gauge.
We present a concise summary of recent results for the vector correlator in massless QCD at order ${\cal O}(α_s^4)$, with all colour factors being given for a generic colour group. As a direct consequence we arrive at: (i) the full QCD contribution to the QED $β$--function of order $α^2\, α_s^4$ in the MSbar- and MOM-schemes; (ii) the full five-loop result of order $α^6$ for the $β$-function of QED with a generic number of single-charged fermions, again for the MSbar- and MOM-schemes.
In a previous paper we showed how higher-order strong-field-QED processes in long laser pulses can be approximated by multiplying sequences of "strong-field Mueller matrices". We obtained expressions that are valid for arbitrary field shape and polarization. In this paper we derive practical approximations of these Mueller matrices in the locally-constant- and the locally-monochromatic-field regimes. We allow for arbitrary laser polarization as well as arbitrarily polarized initial and final particles. The spin and polarization can also change due to loop contributions (the mass operator for e…
We calculate the quantum corrections to the mass of the zero mode of the fifth component of the gauge field at two-loop level in a five dimensional massless QED compactified on S^1. We discuss in detail how the divergences are exactly canceled and the mass becomes finite. The key ingredients to obtain the result are the five dimensional gauge invariance and the Ward-Takahashi identity. We also evaluate the finite part of corrections.
The conventional results for hard thermal loops, which are the building blocks of resummed perturbation theory in thermal field theories, have collinear singularities when external momenta are light-like. It is shown that by taking into account asymptotic thermal masses these singularities are removed. The thus improved hard thermal loops can be summarized by compact gauge-invariant effective actions, generalizing the ones found by Taylor and Wong, and by Braaten and Pisarski.
We continue an effort to obtain information on the QED perturbation series at high loop orders, and particularly on the issue of large cancellations inside gauge invariant classes of graphs, using the example of the l - loop N - photon amplitudes in the limit of large photons numbers and low photon energies. As was previously shown, high-order information on these amplitudes can be obtained from a nonperturbative formula, due to Affleck et al., for the imaginary part of the QED effective lagrangian in a constant field. The procedure uses Borel analysis and leads, under some plausible assumptio…
In this paper we compute the four-loop corrections to the QED photon self-energy Pi(Q^2) in the two limits of q=0 and Q^2->infinity. These results are used to explicitly construct the conversion relations between the QED charge renormalized in on-shell(OS) and MSbar scheme. Using these relations and results of Baikov et al. [1] we construct the momentum dependent part of Pi(Q^2,m,alpha) at large Q^2 at five loops in both MSbar and OS schemes. As a direct consequence we arrive at the full result for the QED beta-function in the OS scheme at five loops. These results are applied, in turn, to ana…
The semi-analytical expression for the forth coefficient of the renormalization group $β$-function in the ${\rm{V}}$-scheme is obtained in the case of the $SU(N_c)$ gauge group. In the process of calculations we use the three-loop perturbative approximation for the QCD static potential, evaluated in the $\rm{\overline{MS}}$-scheme. The importance of getting more detailed expressions for the $n_f$-independent three-loop contribution to the static potential, obtained at present by two groups, is emphasised. The comparison of the numerical structure of the four-loop approximations for the RG $β$- …
It is explained how first-quantized worldline path integrals can be used as an efficient alternative to Feynman diagrams in the calculation of QED amplitudes and effective actions. The examples include the one-loop photon splitting amplitude, the two-loop Euler-Heisenberg Lagrangian, and the one-loop axial vacuum polarization tensor in a general constant electromagnetic field.
We calculate a finite momentum-dependent part of the photon polarization operator in a simple model of Lorentz-violating quantum electrodynamics nonperturbatively at all orders of Lorentz-violating parameters. We sum one-particle reducible diagrams into the modified photon propagator, and determine the physical photon dispersion relation as the location of its pole. The photon dispersion relation, as well as its group velocity, acquires the one-loop momentum-dependent radiative correction. We constrain the Lorentz-violating parameters for heavy charged fermions (muon, $τ$-lepton, top-quark) fr…
We study the radiative corrections to the Chern-Simons mass term at two loops in 2+1 dimensional quantum electrodynamics at finite temperature. We show that, in contrast to the behavior at zero temperature, thermal effects lead to a non vanishing contribution at this order. Using this result, as well as the large gauge Ward identity for the leading parity violating terms in the static limit, we determine the leading order parity violating effective action in this limit at two loops, which generalizes the one-loop effective action proposed earlier.
We derive an explicit formula for the low energy limits of the one-loop, on-shell, massive N-photon amplitudes, for arbitrary N and all helicity assignments, in scalar and spinor QED. The two-loop corrections to the same amplitudes are obtained for up to the ten point case. All photon amplitudes with an odd number of `+' helicities are shown to vanish in this limit to all loop orders.

We obtain analytical five-loop results for the renormalization group $β$-function of Quantum Electrodynamics with the single lepton in different renormalization schemes. The theoretical consequences of the results obtained are discussed.
QED based on $θ$-unexpanded noncomutative space-time in contrast with the noncommutative QED based on $θ$-expanded U(1) gauge theory via the Seiberg-Witten map, is one-loop renormalizable. Meanwhile it suffers from asymptotic freedom that is not in agreement with the experiment. We show that QED part of $U_\star(3)\times U_\star(1)$ gauge group as an appropriate gauge group for the noncommutative QED+QCD, is not only one-loop renormalizable but also has a $β$ function that can be positive, negative and even zero. In fact the $β$ function depends on the mixing parameter $δ_{13}$ as a free param…
The anomalous magnetic moment of the muon is one of the most fundamental observables. It has been measured experimentally with a very high precision and on theory side the contributions from perturbative QED have been calculated up to five-loop level by numerical methods. Contributions to the muon anomalous magnetic moment from certain diagram classes are also accessible by alternative methods. In this paper we present the evaluation of contributions to the QED corrections due to insertions of the vacuum polarization function at five-loop level.
We obtain a simple relation between massless and massive scattering amplitudes in gauge theories in the limit where all kinematic invariants are large compared to particle masses. We use this relation to derive the two-loop QED corrections to large-angle Bhabha scattering.
We report on two recent multiloop results in QED: (i) the four-loop corrections to the conversion relations between the QED charge renormalized in the on-shell and MS-bar schemes; (ii) analytical evaluation of a class of asymptotic contributions to the muon anomaly at five-loops.
We have developed an efficient algorithm for the subtraction of infrared divergences that arise in the evaluation of QED corrections to the anomalous magnetic moment of lepton (g-2). By incorporating this new algorithm, we have extended the automated code-generating system developed previously to deal with diagrams without internal lepton loops (called q-type), which produced convergent integrals when applied to diagrams that have only ultraviolet-divergent subdiagrams of vertex type. The new system produces finite integrals for all q-type diagrams, including those that contain self-energy sub…
Recent developments in the calculation of the NNLO corrections to the Bhabha scattering differential cross section in pure QED are briefly reviewed and discussed.
We compute the on-shell wave function renormalization constant to four-loop order in QCD and present numerical results for all coefficients of the SU$(N_c)$ colour factors. We extract the four-loop HQET anomalous dimension of the heavy quark field and also discuss the application of our result to QED.

We investigate generic properties of one-loop amplitudes in unordered gauge theories in four dimensions. For such theories the organisation of amplitudes in manifestly crossing symmetric expressions poses restrictions on their structure and results in remarkable cancellations. We show that one-loop multi-photon amplitudes in QED with at least eight external photons are given only by scalar box integral functions. This QED `no-triangle' property is true for all helicity configurations and has similarities to the `no-triangle' property found in the case of maximal N = 8 supergravity. Results are…
In recent work, Gies and Karbstein have discovered that the two-loop Euler-Heisenberg Lagrangians for scalar and spinor QED have non-vanishing reducible contributions in addition to the well-studied irreducible ones. This invalidates previous applications of those Lagrangians to the computation of the two-loop $N$-photon amplitudes in the low energy limit. Here we compute the corrections to those amplitudes due to the reducible contributions.
We use the pinch technique formalism to construct the gauge-independent off-shell two-loop fermion self-energy, both for Abelian (QED) and non-Abelian (QCD) gauge theories. The new key observation is that all contributions originating from the longitudinal parts of gauge boson propagators, by virtue of the elementary tree-level Ward identities they trigger, give rise to effective vertices, which do not exist in the original Lagrangian; all such vertices cancel diagrammatically inside physical quantities, such as current correlation functions or S-matrix elements. We present two different, but …
We calculate the three- and four-loop corrections to the massless fermion propagator in three-dimensional quenched Quantum Electrodynamics with four-component fermions. The three-loop correction is finite and gauge invariant but the four-loop one has singularities except in the Feynman gauge where it is also finite. Our results explicitly show that, up to four loops, gauge-dependent terms are completely determined by lower order ones in agreement with the Landau-Khalatnikov-Fradkin transformation.
We review the four-loop QED corrections to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. The fermionic contributions with closed electron and tau contributions are discussed. Furthermore, we report on a new independent calculation of the universal four-loop contribution and compare with existing results.
The one-loop finite temperature effective potential of QED in an external electromagnetic field is obtained using the worldline method. The general structure of the temperature dependent part of the effective action in an arbitrary external inhomogeneous magnetic field is established. The two-derivative effective action of spinor and scalar QED in a static magnetic background at $T\neq 0$ is derived.
We apply the DRA method to the calculation of the four-loop `QED-type' tadpoles. For arbitrary space-time dimensionality D the results have the form of multiple convergent sums. We use these results to obtain the epsilon-expansion of the integrals around D=3 and D=4.
The two-loop massive operator matrix elements for the fermionic local twist--2 operators with external massive fermion lines in Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) are calculated up to the constant terms in the dimensional parameter $ε= D - 4$. We investigate the hypothesis of Ref. \cite{BBN} that the 2--loop QED initial state corrections to $e^+e^-$ annihilation into a virtual neutral gauge boson, except power corrections of $O((m_f^2/s)^k), k \geq 1$, can be represented in terms of these matrix elements and the massless 2-loop Wilson coefficients of the Drell-Yan process.
The effective actions of gauge bosons, fermions and scalars, which are obtained within the hard-loop approximation, are shown to have unique forms for a whole class of gauge theories including QED, scalar QED, super QED, pure Yang-Mills, QCD, super Yang-Mills. The universality occurs irrespective of a field content of each theory and of variety of specific interactions. Consequently, the long-wavelength or semiclassical features of plasma systems governed by these theories such as collective excitations are almost identical. An origin of the universality, which holds within the limits of appli…
The running of the effective electromagnetic coupling is for many electroweak observables the dominant correction. It plays an important role for deriving constraints on the Standard Model in the context of electroweak precision measurements. We compute the four-loop QED corrections to the running of the effective electromagnetic coupling and perform a numerical evaluation of the different gauge invariant subsets.
We calculate the effective potential for the WLPNGB in a world with a circular latticized extra dimension. The mass of the WLPNGB is calculated from the one-loop quantum effect of scalar fields at zero and finite temperature. We show that a series expansion by the modified Bessel functions is useful to calculate the one-loop effective potentials.
We present an analytic calculation of electron and tau O(alpha^3) loop effects on the muon anomalous magnetic moment. Computation of such three-loop diagrams with three mass scales is possible using asymptotic and eikonal expansions. An evaluation of a new type of eikonal integrals is presented in some detail.
In this paper we calculate at high-precision the Laurent expansions in e=(4-D)/2 of the 17 master integrals which appeared in the analytical calculation of 3-loop QED contribution to the electron g-2, using difference and differential equations. The coefficients of the expansions so obtained are in perfect agreement with all the analytical expressions already known. The values of coefficients not previously known will be used in the high-precision calculation of the 4-loop QED contribution to the electron g-2.
We study the three-loop Euler-Heisenberg Lagrangian in spinor quantum electrodynamics in 1+1 dimensions. In this first part we calculate the one-fermion-loop contribution, applying both standard Feynman diagrams and the worldline formalism which leads to two different representations in terms of fourfold Schwinger-parameter integrals. Unlike the diagram calculation, the worldline approach allows one to combine the planar and the non-planar contributions to the Lagrangian. Our main interest is in the asymptotic behaviour of the weak-field expansion coefficients of this Lagrangian, for which a n…
We discuss the one loop effects of massless fermion fields on the low energy vector brane-to-brane propagators in the framework of two QED brane-world scenarios. We show that one loop photon brane-to-brane propagator has a power law pathologic IR divergences in the 5D QED brane-world model with gap between the vector zero mode and continuous states. We also find that bulk fermions do not give rise to IR divergences in a photon brane-to-brane Green's function at least at the one loop level in the framework of 6D QED brane model with gapless mass spectrum between vector zero mode and higher stat…
We present analytic results for one of two types of planar QED two-loop integrals for $μe$ scattering including finite lepton masses. No approximations are made, such that the results are valid not only in the limit of a small electron mass. The results are expressed in terms of multiple polylogarithms with algebraic function arguments in a representation which allows for fast numerical evaluation in the physical phase-space.
We calculate the free energy of a hot gas of electrons and photons to three loops using the hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory reorganization of finite-temperature perturbation theory. We calculate the free energy through three loops by expanding in a power series in m_D/T, m_f/T, and e^2, where m_D and m_f are thermal masses and e is the coupling constant. We demonstrate that the hard-thermal-loop perturbation reorganization improves the convergence of the successive approximations to the QED free energy at large coupling, e ~ 2. The reorganization is gauge invariant by construction, and d…
We present a set of scalar master integrals (MIs) needed for a complete treatment of massive two-loop corrections to Bhabha scattering in QED, including integrals with arbitrary fermionic loops. The status of analytical solutions for the MIs is reviewed and examples of some methods to solve MIs analytically are worked out in more detail. Analytical results for the pole terms in epsilon of so far unknown box MIs with five internal lines are given.
In this paper we examine Phi-derivable approximations in QED. General theorems tell us that the gauge dependence of the n-loop Phi-derivable approximation shows up at order g^(2n) where g is the coupling constant. We consider the gauge dependence of the two-loop Phi-derivable approximation to the Debye mass and show that it is of order e^4 as expected. We solve the three-loop Phi-derivable approximation in QED by expanding sum-integrals in powers of e^2 and m/T, where m is the Debye mass which satisfies a variational gap equation. The results for the pressure and the Debye mass are accurate to…
We evaluate the on shell form factors of the electron for arbitrary momentum transfer and finite electron mass, at two loops in QED, by integrating the corresponding dispersion relations, which involve the imaginary parts known since a long time. The infrared divergences are parameterized in terms of a fictitious small photon mass. The result is expressed in terms of Harmonic Polylogarithms of maximum weight 4. The expansions for small and large momentum transfer are also given
Among 12672 Feynman diagrams contributing to the electron anomalous magnetic moment at the tenth order, 6354 are the diagrams having no lepton loops, i.e., those of quenched type. Because the renormalization structure of these diagrams is very complicated, some automation scheme is inevitable to calculate them. We developed an algorithm to write down FORTRAN programs for numerical evaluation of these diagrams, where the necessary counterterms to subtract out ultraviolet subdivergence are generated according to Zimmermann's forest formula. Thus far we have evaluated crudely integrals of 2232 te…
