Raman spectroscopy is a fast, non-destructive means to characterize graphene samples. In particular, the Raman spectra show a significant dependence on doping. While the change in position and width of the G peak can be explained by the non-adiabatic Kohn anomaly at $Γ$, the significant doping dependence of the 2D peak intensity has not been explained yet. Here we show that this is due to a combination of electron-phonon and electron-electron scattering. Under full resonance, the photogenerated electron-hole pairs can scatter not just with phonons, but also with doping-induced electrons or holes, and this changes the intensity. We explain the doping dependence and show how it can be used to determine the corresponding electron-phonon coupling. This is higher than predicted by density-functional theory, as a consequence of renormalization by Coulomb interactions.
We investigate the evolution of the Raman spectrum of defected graphene as a function of doping. Polymer electrolyte gating allows us to move the Fermi level up to 0.7eV, as monitored by \textit{in-situ} Hall-effect measurements. For a given number of defects, we find that the intensities of the D and D' peaks decrease with increasing doping. We assign this to an increased total scattering rate of the photoexcited electrons and holes, due to the doping-dependent strength of electron-electron scattering. We present a general relation between D peak intensity and defects valid for any doping lev…
Time-resolved Raman spectroscopy has been applied to probe the anharmonic coupling and electron-phonon interaction of optical phonons in graphite. From the decay of the transient anti-Stokes scattering of the G-mode following ultrafast excitation, we measured a lifetime of 2.2+/-0.1ps for zone-center optical phonons. We also observed a transient stiffening of G-mode phonons, an effect attributed to the reduction of the electron-phonon coupling for high electronic temperatures.
We have investigated antidot lattices, which were prepared on exfoliated graphene single layers via electron-beam lithography and ion etching, by means of scanning Raman spectroscopy. The peak positions, peak widths and intensities of the characteristic phonon modes of the carbon lattice have been studied systematically in a series of samples. In the patterned samples, we found a systematic stiffening of the G band mode, accompanied by a line narrowing, while the 2D mode energies are found to be linearly correlated with the G mode energies. We interpret this as evidence for p-type doping of th…
The theory of Raman scattering in half-metals by optical phonons interacting with conduction electrons is developed. We evaluate the effect of electron-phonon interactions at ferromagnetic ordering in terms of the Boltzmann equation for carriers. The chemical potential is found to decrease with temperature decreasing. Both the linewidth and frequency shift exhibit a dependence on temperature.
Intermediate frequency range (511 - 514 cm-1) Si phonons in Si-SiO2 nanocomposites are shown to have contribution from both core1 and surface/interface1 Si phonons, where, ratio of contribution of the two depends on the size of a Si nanocrystal. Further, laser heating experiment shows that contribution of the core phonon increases due to increase in size of a nanocrystal. Wavelength dependent Raman mapping reveals that interface phonons are observable due to Resonance Raman scattering. This can well be corroborated with the absorption spectra. This understanding can be gainfully used to manipu…
The Raman peak position and linewidth provide insight into phonon anharmonicity and electron-phonon interactions (EPI) in materials. For monolayer graphene, prior first-principles calculations have yielded decreasing linewidth with increasing temperature, which is opposite to measurement results. Here, we explicitly consider four-phonon anharmonicity, phonon renormalization, and electron-phonon coupling, and find all to be important to successfully explain both the $G$ peak frequency shift and linewidths in our suspended graphene sample at a wide temperature range. Four-phonon scattering contr…
Graphene is an ideal platform to study the coherence of quantum interference pathways by tuning doping or laser excitation energy. The latter produces a Raman excitation profile that provides direct insight into the lifetimes of intermediate electronic excitations and, therefore, on quantum interference, which has so far remained elusive. Here, we control the Raman scattering pathways by tuning the laser excitation energy in graphene doped up to 1.05eV, above what achievable with electrostatic doping. The Raman excitation profile of the G mode indicates its position and full width at half maxi…
Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are layered materials which show excellent potential for nanoelectronic and optoelectronic applications. However, as many of the exciting features of these materials are controlled by the anharmonic effects, a proper understanding of the phonon properties and anharmonicity associated with these materials is essential for the proposed applications to be realized. We present here a comprehensive study on the phonon properties of two different TMDs; viz., MoS2 and MoTe2, as a function of temperature, laser excitations, and polarization, as well as flake-thi…
Phonon-phonon anharmonic effects have a strong influence on the phonon spectrum; most prominent manifestation of these effects are the softening (shift in frequency) and broadening (change in FWHM) of the phonon modes at finite temperature. Using Raman spectroscopy, we studied the temperature dependence of the FWHM and Raman shift of $\mathrm{E_{2g}^1}$ and $\mathrm{A_{1g}}$ modes for single-layer and natural bilayer MoS$_2$ over a broad range of temperatures ($8 < $T$ < 300$ K). Both the Raman shift and FWHM of these modes show linear temperature dependence for $T>100$ K, whereas they become …
The interaction of double wall carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) and the conducting polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiphene/polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT/PSS) was studied by in-situ Raman spectroelectrochemistry. The mixing of DWCNTs with PEDOT/PSS caused a partial doping of the outer tube of DWCNTs, which was indicated by the relative change of the Raman intensity of the DWCNTs features. On the other hand, the bands corresponding to inner tubes of DWCNTs and to the polymer were almost untouched by assembling both species into a composite. The in situ Raman spectroelectrochemical experiments have shown t…
Electrostatic gating offers elegant ways to simultaneously strain and dope atomically thin membranes. Here, we report on a detailed \textit{in situ} Raman scattering study on graphene, suspended over a Si/SiO$_2$ substrate. In such a layered structure, the intensity of the Raman G- and 2D-mode features of graphene are strongly modulated by optical interference effects and allow an accurate determination of the electrostatically-induced membrane deflection, up to irreversible collapse. The membrane deflection is successfully described by an electromechanical model, which we also use to provide …
We perform Raman scattering experiments on natural graphite in magnetic fields up to 45 T, observing a series of peaks due to interband electronic excitations over a much broader magnetic field range than previously reported. We also explore electron-phonon coupling in graphite via magnetophonon resonances. The Raman G peak shifts and splits as a function of magnetic field, due to the magnetically tuned coupling of the E2g optical phonons with the K- and H-point inter-Landau-level excitations. The analysis of the observed anticrossing behavior allows us to determine the electron-phonon couplin…
The dominant phonon wavevectors $q^{*}$ probed by the 2D Raman mode of graphene are highly anisotropic and rotate with the orientation of the polarizer:analyzer direction relative to the lattice. The corresponding electronic transitions connect the electronic equibandgap contours where the product of the ingoing and outgoing optical matrix elements is strongest, showing a finite component along $\bm{K}-\bmΓ$ that sensitively determines $q^{*}$. We revoke the notion of 'inner' and 'outer' processes. Our findings explain the splitting of the 2D mode of graphene under uniaxial tensile strain. The…
We use anhydrous ferric chloride (FeCl3) to intercalate graphite flakes consisting of 2 to 4 graphene layers and to dope graphene monolayers. The intercalant, staging, stability and doping of the resulting intercalation compounds (ICs) are characterized by Raman scattering. The G peak of monolayer graphene heavily-doped by FeCl3 upshifts to~1627cm-1. 2-4 layer ICs have similar upshifts, and a Lorentzian lineshape for the 2D band, indicating that each layer behaves as a decoupled heavily doped monolayer. By performing Raman measurement at different excitation energies we show that, for a given …
We consider theoretically a superlattice formed by thin conducting layers separated spatially between insulating layers. The dispersion of two coupled phonon-plasmon modes of the system is analyzed by using Maxwell's equations, with the influence of retardation included. Both transmission for the finite plate as well as absorption for the semi-infinite superlattice in the infrared are calculated. Reflectance minima are determined by the longitudinal and transverse phonon frequencies in the insulating layers and by the density-state singularities of the coupled modes. We evaluate also the Raman…
We calculate low-frequency Raman scattering from the confined acoustic phonon modes of CdS1-xSex nanoparticles embedded in borosilicate glass. The calculation of the Raman scattering by acoustic phonons in nanoparticles has been performed by using third-order perturbation theory. The deformation potential approximation is used to describe the electronphonon interaction. The Raman-Brillouin electronic density and the electron-phonon interaction are found to increases with decreasing size of nanoparticle. A good agreement between the calculated and reported low-frequency Raman spectra is found.
Excitation of four coherent phonon modes of different symmetries has been realized in copper metaborate CuB$_2$O$_4$ via impulsive stimulated Raman scattering (ISRS). Phonons were detected by monitoring changes in the linear optical birefringence using the balanced-detection (BD) technique. We compare the results of BD-ISRS experiment to the polarized spontaneous Raman scattering spectra. We show that the agreement between the two sets of data obtained by these allied techniques in a wide phonon frequencies range of 4-14 THz can be achieved by rigorously taking into account the symmetry of the…
High quality single crystals of Bi2Se3 were grown using a modified Bridgman technique, the detailed study were carried out using Raman spectroscopy and characterized by Laue diffraction and high resolution transmission electron microscopy. Polarized Raman scattering measurements were also carried out, and both the A1g and A2g phonon modes showed strong polarization effect, which is consistent with the theoretical prediction. The temperature dependent study (in the temperature range 83 K to 523 K of Raman active modes were reported and observed to follow a systematic red shift. The frequency of…
We have studied the coherent dynamics of G-band phonons in single-walled carbon nanotubes through impulsive stimulated Stokes and anti-Stokes Raman scattering. The probe energy dependence of phonon amplitude as well as preferential occurrence between Stokes and anti-Stokes components in response to chirped-pulse excitation are well explained within our model. The temperature dependence of the observed dephasing rate clearly exhibits a thermally-activated component, with an activation energy that coincides with the frequency of the radial breathing mode (RBM). This fact provides a clear picture…
Inelastic light scattering spectra of Bi_2Se_3 and Sb_2Te_3 single crystals have been measured over the temperature range from 5 K to 300 K. The temperature dependence of dominant A^{2}_{1g} phonons shows similar behavior in both materials. The temperature dependence of the peak position and linewidth is analyzed considering the anharmonic decay of optical phonons and the material thermal expansion. This work suggests that Raman spectroscopy can be used for thermometry in Bi_2Se_3- and Sb_2Te_3-based devices in a wide temperature range.
Microscopic description of Raman spectra in nanopowders of nonpolar crystals is accomplished by developing the theory of disorder-induced broadening of optical vibrational eigenmodes. Analytical treatment of this problem is performed, and line shape and width are determined as functions of phonon quantum numbers, nanoparticle shape, size, and the strength of disorder. The results are found to be strongly dependent on either the broadened line is separated or it is overlapped with other lines of the spectrum. Three models of disorder, i.e. weak point-like impurities, weak smooth random potentia…
Si-SiO2 multilayer nanocomposite (NCp) films, grown using pulsed laser deposition with varying Si deposition time are investigated using Raman spectroscopy/mapping for studying the variation of Si phonon frequency observed in these NCps. The lower frequency (LF) phonons (~ 495 - 510 cm-1) and higher frequency (HF) phonons (~ 515 - 519 cm-1) observed in Raman mapping data (Fig. 1A) in all samples studied are attributed to have originated from surface (Si-SiO2 interface) and core of Si nanocrystals, respectively. The consistent picture of this understanding is developed using Raman spectroscopy …
Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) nanosheets exhibit remarkable electronic and optical properties. The 2D features, sizable bandgaps, and recent advances in the synthesis, characterization, and device fabrication of the representative MoS$_2$, WS$_2$, WSe$_2$, and MoSe$_2$ TMDs make TMDs very attractive in nanoelectronics and optoelectronics. Similar to graphite and graphene, the atoms within each layer in 2D TMDs are joined together by covalent bonds, while van der Waals interactions keep the layers together. This makes the physical and chemical properties of 2D TMDs …
We present spatially resolved Raman images of the G and 2D lines of single-layer graphene flakes. The spatial fluctuations of G and 2D lines are correlated and are thus shown to be affiliated with local doping domains. We investigate the position of the 2D line -- the most significant Raman peak to identify single-layer graphene -- as a function of charging up to |n|~4 10^12 cm^-2. Contrary to the G line which exhibits a strong and symmetric stiffening with respect to electron and hole-doping, the 2D line shows a weak and slightly asymmetric stiffening for low doping. Additionally, the line wi…
The magneto-phonon resonance or MPR occurs in semiconductor materials when the energy spacing between Landau levels is continuously tuned to cross the energy of an optical phonon mode. MPRs have been largely explored in bulk semiconductors, in two-dimensional systems and in quantum dots. Recently there has been significant interest in the MPR interactions of the Dirac fermion magnetoexcitons in graphene, and a rich splitting and anti-crossing phenomena of the even parity E2g long wavelength optical phonon mode have been theoretically proposed and experimentally observed. The MPR has been found…
Raman spectroscopy is a powerful tool for characterizing the local properties of graphene. Here, we introduce a method for evaluating unknown strain configurations and simultaneous doping. It relies on separating the effects of hydrostatic strain (peak shift) and shear strain (peak splitting) on the Raman spectrum of graphene. The peak shifts from hydrostatic strain and doping are separated with a correlation analysis of the 2D and G frequencies. This enables us to obtain the local hydrostatic strain, shear strain and doping without any assumption on the strain configuration prior to the analy…
Raman spectra of polycrystalline NdFeAsO1-xFx (x=0.0, 0.1, 0.2) compound have been systematically investigated as functions of temperature and fluorine concentration. Scanning electron microscopic and Raman microscopic characterization demonstrates that the polycrystalline samples mainly contain two phases, i.e. superconductor NdFeAsO1-xFx compound and a MnP-type FeAs phase, with dissimilar characteristic Raman bands. It was found that fluorine doping leads to structure disorder in the insulator Nd-O layers and high temperature coefficient of Fe-As vibrational mode.
We report an investigation of perovskite-type LaNiO3 thin films by Raman scattering in both various scattering configurations and as a function of temperature. The room-temperature Raman spectra and the associated phonon mode assignment provide reference data for phonon calculations and for the use of Raman scattering for structural investigations of LaNiO3, namely the effect of strain in thin films or heterostructures. The temperature-dependent Raman spectra from 80 to 900 K are characterized by the softening of the rotational A1g mode, which suggest a decreasing rhombohedral distortion towar…
Antiferromagnetic materials with strong spin-phonon coupling have the potential for spintronic applications. Here, we report the structural, magnetic, and vibrational properties of 12R-BaTi0.4Mn0.6O3. Temperature-dependent magnetization data show the presence of weak antiferromagnetic interactions. Correlation between magnetic and vibrational properties are probed by using temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopic measurements. Two of the Raman active phonons show deviation from anharmonic behaviour at low temperatures which can be attributed to spin-phonon coupling. The strength of coupling i…
We performed Raman spectroscopy measurements under temperature changes from 10 K up to 850 K to probe the phonon-spin coupling in Y$_2$NiMnO$_6$. The spin-phonon coupling was observed as a softening of the stretching mode, indicating this phonon stabilizes the magnetic interaction. The result indicates the rare earth ionic radius in Re$_2$NiMnO$_6$ double perovskites is not the unique parameter influencing the spin-coupling magnitude.
In ionic Raman scattering, infrared-active phonons mediate a scattering process that results in the creation or destruction of a Raman-active phonon. This mechanism relies on nonlinear interactions between phonons and has in recent years been associated with a variety of emergent lattice-driven phenomena in complex transition-metal oxides, but the underlying mechanism is often obscured by the presence of multiple coupled order parameters in play. Here, we use time-resolved spectroscopy to compare coherent phonons generated by ionic Raman scattering with those created by more conventional elect…
The semimetal NbIrTe4 has been proposed to be a Type-II Weyl semimetal with 8 pairs of opposite Chirality Weyl nodes which are very close to the Fermi energy. This topological electronic structure is made possible because of the broken inversion symmetry of NbIrTe4 which is an orthorhombic crystal with Td symmetry. Using micro-Raman scattering as a probe, we observe the frequencies and symmetries of 19 phonon modes (ranging from 40 to 260 cm-1) in this material and compare to Density Functional Theory calculations. Using angular and polarization resolved Raman scattering for green (514 nm) and…
The optical properties of the two-dimensional (2D) crystals are dominated by tightly bound electron-hole pairs (excitons) and lattice vibration modes (phonons). The exciton-phonon interaction is fundamentally important to understand the optical properties of 2D materials and thus help develop emerging 2D crystal based optoelectronic devices. Here, we presented the excitonic resonant Raman scattering (RRS) spectra of few-layer WS$_2$ excited by 11 lasers lines covered all of A, B and C exciton transition energies at different sample temperatures from 4 to 300 K. As a result, we are not only abl…
We study the bulk and surface phonon-polaritons of the Zn0.67Be0.33Se zincblende alloy by near-forward Raman scattering. The short (Be-Se) bond exhibits a distinct percolation doublet in the conventional backscattering Raman spectra, corresponding to a three-mode behavior in total [1(Zn-Se),2(Be-Se)] for Zn0.67Be0.33Se. This offers an opportunity to achieve a refined understanding of the phonon-polariton modes of a zincblende alloy beyond the current two-mode approximation, corresponding to a [1(Zn-Se),1(Be-Se)] description in the present case. The discussion is supported by contour modeling o…
We report a Raman spectroscopy study of graphene field-effect transistors (GFET) with a controlled amount of defects introduced in graphene by exposure to electron-beam irradiation. Raman spectra are taken at T = 8 K over a range of back gate voltages (Vg) for various irradiation dosages (Re). We study effects in the Raman spectra due to Vg-induced doping and artificially created disorder at various Re. With moderate disorder (irradiation), the Raman G peak with respect to the graphene carrier density (nFE) exhibits a minimum in peak frequency and a maximum in peak width near the charge- neutr…
We use a combination of polarized Raman spectroscopy experiment and model magnetism-phonon coupling calculations to study the rich magneto-Raman effect in the two-dimensional (2D) magnet $\mathrm{CrI_3}$. We reveal a novel layered-magnetism-assisted phonon scattering mechanism below the magnetic onset temperature, whose Raman excitation breaks time-reversal symmetry, has an antisymmetric Raman tensor, and follows the magnetic phase transitions across critical magnetic fields, on top of the presence of the conventional phonon scattering with symmetric Raman tensors in $N$-layer $\mathrm{CrI_3}$…
We report a systematic investigation of orthorhombic perovskite-type RCrO3 powder samples by Raman scattering for nine different rare earth R3+ cations (R = Y, La, Pr, Sm, Gd, Dy, Ho, Yb, Lu). The room-temperature Raman spectra and the associated phonon mode assignment provide reference data for structural investigation of the whole series of RCrO3 orthochromites and phonon ab-initio calculations. The assignment of the chromite spectra and comparison with Raman data on other orthorhombic perovskites allows correlating the phonon modes with the structural distortions in the RCrO3 series. In par…
Raman scattering on phonon--plasmon coupled modes in high magnetic fields is considered theoretically. The calculations of the dielectric function were performed in the long-wave approximation for the semiclassical and ultra-quantum magnetic fields taking into account the electron damping and intrinsic lifetime of optical phonons. The Raman scattering has resonances at the frequencies of coupled modes as well as at multiples of the cyclotron frequency. The dependence of the Raman cross section on the carrier concentration is analyzed.
We present a systematic study of the Raman spectra of optical phonons in graphene monolayers under tunable uniaxial tensile stress. Both the G and 2D bands exhibit significant red shifts. The G band splits into two distinct sub-bands (G+, G-) because of the strain-induced symmetry breaking. Raman scattering from the G+ and G- bands shows a distinctive polarization dependence that reflects the angle between the axis of the stress and the underlying graphene crystal axes. Polarized Raman spectroscopy therefore constitutes a purely optical method for the determination of the crystallographic orie…
We have carried out temperature and pressure-dependent Raman and x-ray measurements on single crystals of Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$. We attribute the observed anomalous temperature dependence of phonons to phonon-phonon anharmonic interactions. The quasiharmonic and anharmonic contributions to the temperature-dependent changes in phonon frequencies are estimated quantitatively using mode Grüneisen parameters derived from pressure-dependent Raman experiments and bulk modulus from high pressure x-ray measurements. Further, our Raman and x-ray data suggest a subtle structural deformation of the pyrochlor…
MnV$_2$O$_4$ in the spinel structure is known to exhibit coupled orbital and spin ordering, and its Raman spectra show interesting anomalies in its low-temperature phase. With a goal to explain this behavior involving coupled spins and phonons, we determine here the spin-phonon couplings in MnV$_2$O$_4$ from a theoretical analysis of its phonon spectra and their dependence on spin-ordering and electron correlations, obtained from first-principles density functional theoretical calculations. Using these in an analysis based on a Landau-like theory, we uncover the mechanism governing the Raman a…
Raman spectra obtained by the inelastic scattering of light by crystalline solids contain contributions from first-order vibrational processes (e.g. the emission or absorption of one phonon, a quantum of vibration) as well as higher-order processes with at least two phonons being involved. At second order, coupling with the entire phonon spectrum induces a response that may strongly depend on the excitation energy, and reflects complex processes more difficult to interpret. In particular, excitons (i.e. bound electron-hole pairs) may enhance the absorption and emission of light, and couple str…
We demonstrate electrochemical top gating of graphene by using a solid polymer electrolyte. This allows to reach much higher electron and hole doping than standard back gating. In-situ Raman measurements monitor the doping. The G peak stiffens and sharpens for both electron and hole doping, while the 2D peak shows a different response to holes and electrons. Its position increases for hole doping, while it softens for high electron doping. The variation of G peak position is a signature of the non-adiabatic Kohn anomaly at $Γ$. On the other hand, for visible excitation, the variation of the 2D…
It has long been puzzling regarding the atomistic origin of the pressure-induced Raman phonon stiffening that generally follows a polynomial expression with coefficients needing physical indication. Here we show that an extension of the bond-order-length-strength (BOLS) correlation mechanism to the pressure domain has led to an analytical solution to connect the pressure-induced Raman phonon stiffening directly to the bonding identities of the specimen and the response of the bonding identities to the applied stimulus. It is found that the pressure-induced blue-shift of Raman phonons arises fr…
In this letter we investigated the temperature-dependent Raman spectra of CaMn7O12 helimagnet from room temperature down to 10 K. The temperature dependence of the Raman mode parameters show remarkable anomalies for both antiferromagnetic and incommensurate transitions that this compound undergoes at low temperatures. The anomalies observed at the magnetic ordering transition indicate a spin-phonon coupling at higher-temperature magnetic transition in this material, while a magnetostrinction effect at the lower-temperature magnetic transition.
For nanoscale systems such as nanoparticles and 3D-bonded networks, the range of spatial coherence is well reflected in the Raman spectral pattern. For confined, or localized, phonons, the range of q-points contributing to the spectrum depends on the phonon confinement length, which makes possible to derive the size information from the spectra. In this work, Raman spectrum of vitreous silica is described as localized phonons of SiO2 network. The convergence of the spectral pattern with the confinement size is studied. It is shown that the phonon propagation scale in vitreous silica is within …
Graphene phonons are measured as a function of electron doping via the addition of potassium adatoms. In the low doping regime, the in-plane carbon G-peak hardens and narrows with increasing doping, analogous to the trend seen in graphene doped via the field-effect. At high dopings, beyond those accessible by the field-effect, the G-peak strongly softens and broadens. This is interpreted as a dynamic, non-adiabatic renormalization of the phonon self-energy. At dopings between the light and heavily doped regimes, we find a robust inhomogeneous phase where the potassium coverage is segregated in…
We consider a model Hamiltonian fitted on the ab-initio band structure to describe the electron-phonon coupling between the electronic $σ-$bands and the phonon E$_{2g}$ mode in MgB$_2$. The model allows for analytical calculations and numerical treatments using very large k-point grids. We calculate the phonon self-energy of the E$_{2g}$ mode along two high symmetry directions in the Brillouin zone. We demonstrate that the contribution of the $σ$ bands to the Raman linewidth of the E$_{2g}$ mode via the electron-phonon coupling is zero. As a consequence the large resonance seen in Raman experi…
Twisted van der Waals heterostructures unravel a new platform to study strongly correlated quantum phases. The interlayer coupling in these heterostructures is sensitive to twist angles ($θ$) and key to controllably tune several exotic properties. Here, we demonstrate a systematic evolution of the interlayer coupling strength with twist angle in bilayer $\mathrm{MoS_{2}}$ using a combination of Raman spectroscopy and classical simulations. At zero doping, we show a \textit{monotonic} increment of the separation between the $\mathrm{A_{1g}}$ and $\mathrm{E^{1}_{2g}}$ mode frequencies as $θ$ dec…
Recently, phonons with chirality (chiral phonons) have attracted significant attention. Chiral phonons exhibit angular and pseudo-angular momenta. In circularly polarized Raman spectroscopy, the peak split of the $Γ_3$ mode is detectable along the principal axis of the chiral crystal in the backscattering configuration. In addition, peak splitting occurs when the pseudo-angular momenta of the incident and scattered circularly polarized light are reversed. Until now, chiral phonons in binary crystals have been observed, whereas those in unary crystals have not been observed. Here, we observe ch…

We report the influence of Ni/Mn ordering on the spin-phonon coupling in multifunctional La2NiMnO6. Three types of films with different levels of structural order, including long-range Ni/Mn cation order, cation disorder, and an admixture of the ordered and disordered phases, are compared by polarized micro-Raman spectroscopy and magnetometry. Each film displays a strong dependence on the polarization configuration and a unique set of Raman active phonon excitations. Long-range cation ordering results in the splitting of Raman active phonon peaks because of Brillouin zone folding and lowering …
