Using the new physical interpretation of quasinormal modes proposed by Maggiore, we calculate the area and entropy spectra for the 3-dimensioal and 5-dimensional large AdS black holes. The spectra are obtained by imposing the Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization condition to the adiabatic invariant quantity. With this semiclassical method, we find that the spacings of the area and entropy spectra are equidistant and independent of the AdS radius of the black hole for both the cases. However, the spacings of the spectra are not the same for different dimension of space-time. The equidistant area spectra will be broken when the black hole has other parameters (i.e., charge and angular momentum) or in a non-Einstein's gravity theory.
We calculate the scalar quasinormal modes of warped $AdS_3$ black holes analytically. We find that in general they are not in agreement with the prediction of the usual AdS/CFT correspondence. Nevertheless, for the black hole not deviating far from BTZ black hole, the quasinormal frequencies are still well consistent with AdS/CFT correspondence.
We study the spectrum of vector mesons in a finite temperature plasma. The plasma is holographically described by a black hole AdS/QCD model. We compute the boundary retarded Green's function using AdS/CFT prescriptions. The corresponding thermal spectral functions show quasiparticle peaks at low temperatures. Then we calculate the quasinormal modes of vector mesons in the soft-wall black hole geometry and analyse their temperature and momentum dependences.
We show that there exists a precise kinematical notion of holography for the Euclidean warped $AdS_3$ black hole. This follows from the fact that the Euclidean warped $AdS_3$ black hole spacetime is a geometrically finite hyperbolic manifold. For such manifolds a theorem of Sullivan provides a one-to-one correspondence between the hyperbolic structure in the bulk and the conformal structure of its boundary. Using this theorem we obtain the holographic quasinormal modes for the warped $AdS_3$ black hole.
We analytically calculate the low-lying gravitational quasinormal modes of a topological AdS black hole of arbitrary dimension. We show that they are in agreement with corresponding results from the hydrodynamics of the gauge theory plasma on the boundary, as required by the AdS/CFT correspondence. For some of these modes, we obtain a lifetime which is comparable to or longer than the longest lifetime of perturbations of spherical black holes. Thus, these modes are expected to play an important role in the late time behavior of the gauge theory plasma.
We develop a perturbative approach to the solution of the scalar wave equation for a large AdS black hole. In three dimensions, our method coincides with the known exact solution. We discuss the five-dimensional case in detail and apply our procedure to the Heun equation. We calculate the quasi-normal modes analytically and obtain good agreement with numerical results for the low-lying frequencies.
In this work we use the quasinormal mode of a massless scalar perturbation to probe the phase transition of the charged-AdS black hole in time profile. The signature of the critical behavior of this black hole solution is detected in the isobaric process. This paper is a natural extension of [1, 2] to the time domain analysis. More precisely, our study shows a clear signal in term of the damping rate and the oscillation frequencies of the scalar field perturbation. We conclude that the quasinormal modes can be an efficient tool to detect the signature of thermodynamic phase transition in the i…
Black holes in anti-de Sitter (AdS) backgrounds play a pivotal role in the gauge/gravity duality where they determine, among other things, the approach to equilibrium of the dual field theory. We undertake a detailed analysis of perturbed Kerr-AdS black holes in four- and five-dimensional spacetimes, including the computation of its quasinormal modes, hydrodynamic modes and superradiantly unstable modes. Our results shed light on the possibility of new black hole phases with a single Killing field, possible new holographic phenomena and phases in the presence of a rotating chemical potential, …
The AdS/CFT duality has established a mapping between quantities in the bulk AdS black-hole physics and observables in a boundary finite-temperature field theory. Such a relationship appears to be valid for an arbitrary number of spacetime dimensions, extrapolating the original formulations of Maldacena's correspondence. In the same sense properties like the hydrodynamic behavior of AdS black-hole fluctuations have been proved to be universal. We investigate in this work the complete quasinormal spectra of gravitational perturbations of $d$-dimensional plane-symmetric AdS black holes (black br…
We extend the results of arXiv:1401.7016, computing one loop partition functions for massive fields with spin half in AdS_2 using the quasinormal mode method proposed by Denef, Hartnoll, and Sachdev in arXiv:0908.2657. We find the finite representations of SO(2,1) for spin zero and spin half, consisting of a highest weight state |h\rangle and descendants with non-unitary values of h. These finite representations capture the poles and zeroes of the one loop determinants. Together with the asymptotic behavior of the partition functions (which can be easily computed using a large mass heat kernel…
In this work we use the quasinormal frequencies of a massless scalar perturbation to probe the phase transition of the high dimension charged-AdS black hole. The signature of the critical behavior of this black hole solution is detected in the isobaric as well as in isothermal process. This paper is a natural generalization of \cite{base} to higher dimensional spacetime. More precisely our study shows a clear signal for any dimension $d$ in the isobaric process. As to the isothermal case, we find out that this signature can be affected by other parameters like the pressure and the horizon radi…
We investigate the quasinormal spectrum of electromagnetic perturbations of rotating black strings. Among the solutions of Einstein equations in the presence of a negative cosmological constant there are asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS) black holes whose horizons have the topology of a cylinder. The stationary version of these AdS black holes represents rotating black strings. The conformal field theory (CFT) dual of a black string lives in a Minkowski space with a compact dimension. On the basis of the AdS/CFT duality, we interpret a CFT plasma moving with respect to the preferred rest fra…
In this note, we calculate the one-loop determinant for a massive scalar (with conformal dimension $Δ$) in even-dimensional AdS$_{d+1}$ space, using the quasinormal mode method developed in arXiv:0908.2657 by Denef, Hartnoll, and Sachdev. Working first in two dimensions on the related Euclidean hyperbolic plane $H_2$, we find a series of zero modes for negative real values of $Δ$ whose presence indicates a series of poles in the one-loop partition function $Z(Δ)$ in the $Δ$ complex plane; these poles contribute temperature-independent terms to the thermal AdS partition function computed in arX…
We study the time evolution of Wightman two-point functions of scalar fields in AdS$_3$-Vaidya, a spacetime undergoing gravitational collapse. In the boundary field theory, the collapse corresponds to a quench process where the dual 1+1 dimensional CFT is taken out of equilibrium and subsequently thermalizes. From the two-point function, we extract an effective occupation number in the boundary theory and study how it approaches the thermal Bose-Einstein distribution. We find that the Wightman functions, as well as the effective occupation numbers, thermalize with a rate set by the lowest quas…
We consider the various perturbations of self-dual warped AdS$_3$ black hole and obtain the exact expressions of quasinormal modes by imposing the vanishing Dirichlet boundary condition at asymptotic infinity. It is expected that the quasinormal modes agree with the poles of retarded Green's functions of the dual CFT. Our results provide a quantitative test of the warped AdS/CFT correspondence.
We calculate frequency space holographic correlators in an asymptotically AdS crunching background, dual to a relevant deformation of the M2-brane CFT placed in de Sitter spacetime. For massless bulk scalars, exploiting the connection to a solvable supersymmetric quantum mechanical problem, we obtain the exact frequency space correlator for the dual operator in the deformed CFT. Controlling the shape of the crunching surface in the Penrose diagram by smoothly dialling the deformation from zero to infinity, we observe that in the large deformation limit the Penrose diagram becomes a `square', a…
We establish an exact connection between the Choptuik scaling parameter for the three-dimensional BTZ black hole, and the imaginary part of the quasinormal frequencies for scalar perturbations. Via the AdS/CFT correspondence, this leads to an interpretation of Choptuik scaling in terms of the timescale for return to equilibrium of the dual conformal field theory.
We calculate the quasinormal modes of massless scalar perturbations around small and large four-dimensional Reissner-Nordstrom-Anti de Sitter (RN-AdS) black holes. We find a dramatic change in the slopes of quasinormal frequencies in small and large black holes near the critical point where the Van der Waals like thermodynamic phase transition happens. This further supports that the quasinormal mode can be a dynamic probe of the thermodynamic phase transition.
We study the wave equation for a massive scalar field in three-dimensional AdS-black hole and dS (de Sitter) spaces to find what is the difference and similarity between two spaces. Here the AdS-black hole is provided by the J=0 BTZ black hole. To investigate its event (cosmological) horizons, we compute the absorption cross section, quasinormal modes, and study the AdS(dS)/CFT correspondences. Although there remains an unclear point in defining the ingoing flux near infinity of the BTZ black hole, quasinormal modes are obtained and the AdS/CFT correspondence is confirmed. However, we do not f…
We find the asymptotic formula for quasinormal mode frequencies omega_n of the Dirac equation in a Schwarzschild-AdS_D background in space-time dimension D > 3, in the large black-hole limit appropriate to many applications of the AdS/CFT correspondence. By asymptotic, we mean large overtone number n with everything else held fixed, and we find the O(n^0) correction to the known leading O(n) behavior of omega_n. The result has the schematic form omega_n =~ n Delta(omega) + A ln(n) + B, where Delta(omega) and A are constants and B depends logarithmically on the (D-2)-dimensional spatial momentu…
We investigate the quasinormal mode frequencies for the massless Dirac field in static four dimensional $AdS$ space-time. The separation of the Dirac equation is achieved for the first time in $AdS$ space. Besides the relevance that this calculation can have in the framework of the $AdS/CFT$ correspondence between M-theory on $AdS_4\times S^7$ and SU(N) super Yang-Mills theory on $M_3$, it also serves to fill in a gap in the literature, which has only been concerned with particles of integral spin $0,1,2$.
We show that the linear perturbations of any spin field in the near-zone limit of the Kerr black hole are identical to those of an AdS$_2$ black hole which enjoys the same basic properties of the Kerr black hole. Thanks to this identification, we calculate the spectrum of the quasinormal modes and the Love numbers of Kerr black holes using an AdS$_2$/CFT$_1$ correspondence and a group theoretical approach.
We study the propagation of scalar fields in the background of $2+1$-dimensional Coulomb like AdS black holes, and we show that such propagation is stable under Dirichlet boundary conditions. Then, we solve the Klein-Gordon equation by using the pseudospectral Chevyshev method, and we find the quasinormal frequencies. Mainly, we find that the quasinormal frequencies are purely imaginary for a null angular number and they are complex and purely imaginary for a non null value of the angular number, which depend on the black hole charge, angular number and overtone number. On the other hand, the …
We have studied the quasinormal modes of a massive scalar field coupling to Einstein's tensor in the spacelike stretched $AdS_3$ black hole spacetime. We find that both the right-moving and left-moving quasinormal frequencies depend not only on the warped parameter $v$ of black hole, but also on the coupling between the scalar field and Einstein's tensor. Moreover, we also discuss the warped $AdS/CFT$ correspondence from the quasinormal modes and probe the effects of the coupling on the left and right conformal weights $h_L$ and $h_R$ of the operators dual to the scalar field in the boundary.
We investigate quasinormal mode frequencies $ω_n$ of gravitinos and generic massive spin-3/2 fields in a Schwarzschild-AdS$_D$ background in spacetime dimension $D>3$, in the black brane (large black hole) limit appropriate to many applications of the AdS/CFT correspondence. First, we find asymptotic formulas for $ω_n$ in the limit of large overtone number $n$. Asymptotically, $ω_n \simeq n Δω+ O(\ln n) + O(n^0)$, where $Δω$ is a known constant, and here we compute the $O(\ln n)$ and $O(n^0)$ corrections to the leading $O(n)$ behavior. Then we compare to numerical calculations of exact quasino…
We investigate quasinormal modes, greybody factor, and Hawking evaporation of a five-dimensional Kerr-anti de Sitter (AdS$_5$) black hole by solving a wave equation for a test massive scalar field in terms of the local Heun function. We clarify the distribution of the quasinormal modes satisfying the ingoing and decaying boundary conditions at the event horizon and conformal infinity, respectively, and their splitting behaviors in the complex frequency plane with respect to a variation of spin parameters. We also point out the existence of purely imaginary modes. Further, we develop a method t…
Recently an anomalous decay rate of the quasinormal modes of a massive scalar field in Schwarzschild black holes backgrounds was reported in which the longest-lived modes are the ones with higher angular number, for a scalar field mass smaller than a critical value, while that beyond this value the behaviour is inverted. In this work, we extend the study to other asymptotic geometries, such as, Schwarzschild-de Sitter and Schwarzschild-AdS black holes. Mainly, we found that such behaviour and the critical mass are present in the Schwarzschild-de Sitter background. Also, we found that the value…
We study the holographic duals of bosonic and fermionic fields and compute their Quasinormal Frequencies (QNF) by exploiting that they are massive charged fields in $\mathrm{AdS_2 \times \mathcal{K}}$. In particular, we assess the stability of the scalar and fermionic operators in Myers-Perry's black holes with equal angular momenta. We compute the central charge and the Hawking-entropy and introduce extremality parameters to determine the properties of the dual CFT. Then, we briefly discuss how detection of Spin-2 fields can pave the way for more deep understanding of the holographic principl…
We investigate quasinormal modes of a massless charged scalar field on a small Reissner-Nordström-anti-de Sitter (RN-AdS) black hole both with analytical and numerical approaches. In the analytical approach, by using the small black hole approximation (r_+ << L), we obtain the quasinormal mode frequencies in the limit of r_+/L -> 0, where r_+ and L stand for the black hole event horizon radius and the AdS scale, respectively. We then show that the small RN-AdS black hole is unstable if its quasinormal modes satisfy the superradiance condition and that the instability condition of the RN-AdS bl…
An analytic expression for the scalar quasinormal modes of the generic, spinning Kerr-$\mathrm{AdS_5}$ black holes was previously proposed by the authors in ref. 1, in terms of transcendental equations involving the Painlevé VI (PVI) $τ$ function. In this work, we carry out a numerical investigation of the modes for generic rotation parameters, comparing implementations of expansions for the PVI $τ$ function both in terms of conformal blocks (Nekrasov functions) and Fredholm determinants. We compare the results with standard numerical methods for the subcase of Schwarzschild black holes. We th…
Perturbations of asymptotically Anti-de-Sitter (AdS) spacetimes are often considered by imposing field vanishing boundary conditions (BCs) at the AdS boundary. Such BCs, of Dirichlet-type, imply a vanishing energy flux at the boundary, but the converse is, generically, not true. Regarding AdS as a gravitational box, we consider vanishing energy flux (VEF) BCs as a more fundamental physical requirement and we show that these BCs can lead to a new branch of modes. As a concrete example, we consider Maxwell perturbations on Kerr-AdS black holes in the Teukolsky formalism, but our formulation appl…
We compute the quasinormal modes (QNMs) of a massive scalar field in the background of a rotating three-dimensional Hořava AdS black hole, and we analyze the effect of the breaking of the Lorentz invariance on the QNMs. Imposing on the horizon that there are only ingoing waves and at infinity the Dirichlet boundary conditions and the Neumann boundary condition, we calculate the oscillatory and the decay modes of the QNMs. We find that the propagation of the scalar field is stable in this background and employing the holographic principle we find the different times of the perturbed system to r…
In this work, we present the quasinormal modes of a fermionic field in the background of Gauss-Bonnet-AdS black holes. We find exact solutions for $D=5$ at the fixed value $α=R^2/2$ of the Gauss--Bonnet coupling constant, with $R$ denoting the AdS radius, and we find numerical solutions for some range of values of the coupling constant $α$ and $D=5, 6$. Mainly, we find two branches of quasinormal frequencies, a branch perturbative in the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant $α$, and another branch nonperturbative in $α$. The phenomena of nonperturbative modes, which seem to be quite general in theor…
The AdS/CFT correspondence has developed over the last years into a very useful and powerful tool for studying strongly coupled field theories at finite temperature and density. Of particular interest is the regime of near equilibrium real time evolution that can be captured via linear response theory. The AdS/CFT correspondence allows the calculation of retarded two point functions of gauge invariant operators by studying fluctuations around asymptotically AdS black holes. A major role is played by the poles of these holographic response functions: the quasinormal frequencies. I will review t…
The electromagnetic and gravitational quasinormal spectra of $(3+1)$-dimensional plane-symmetric anti-de Sitter black holes are analyzed in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. According to such a correspondence, the electromagnetic and gravitational quasinormal frequencies of these black holes are associated respectively to the poles of retarded correlation functions of $R$-symmetry currents and stress-energy tensor in the holographically dual conformal field theory: the $(2+1)$-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=8$ super-Yang-Mills theory. The connection between AdS black holes and the correspon…
We use the Lorentzian AdS/CFT prescription to find the poles of the retarded thermal Green's functions of ${\cal N=4}$ SU(N) SYM theory in the limit of large N and large 't Hooft coupling. In the process, we propose a natural definition for quasinormal modes in an asymptotically AdS spacetime, with boundary conditions dictated by the AdS/CFT correspondence. The corresponding frequencies determine the dispersion laws for the quasiparticle excitations in the dual finite-temperature gauge theory. Correlation functions of operators dual to massive scalar, vector and gravitational perturbations in …
In this note we compute the 1-loop partition function of spin-$s$ fields on Euclidean de Sitter space $S^{2n+1}$ using the quasinormal mode method. Instead of computing the quasinormal mode frequencies from scratch, we use the analytic continuation prescription $L_{\text{AdS}}\to iL_{\text{dS}}$, appearing in the dS/CFT correspondence, and Wick rotate the normal mode frequencies of fields on thermal $\text{AdS}_{2n+1}$ into the quasinormal mode frequencies of fields on de Sitter space. We compare the quasinormal mode and heat kernel methods of calculating 1-loop determinants, finding exact agr…
We investigate the decay of a scalar field outside a Schwarzschild anti de Sitter black hole. This is determined by computing the complex frequencies associated with quasinormal modes. There are qualitative differences from the asymptotically flat case, even in the limit of small black holes. In particular, for a given angular dependence, the decay is always exponential - there are no power law tails at late times. In terms of the AdS/CFT correspondence, a large black hole corresponds to an approximately thermal state in the field theory, and the decay of the scalar field corresponds to the de…
We use the holographic AdS/QCD soft-wall model to investigate the spectrum of scalar glueballs in a finite temperature plasma. In this model, glueballs are described by a massless scalar field in an AdS_5 black hole with a dilaton soft-wall background. Using AdS/CFT prescriptions, we compute the boundary retarded Green's function. The corresponding thermal spectral function shows quasiparticle peaks at low temperatures. We also compute the quasinormal modes of the scalar field in the soft-wall black hole geometry. The temperature and momentum dependences of these modes are analyzed. The positi…
We study the propagation of probe scalar fields in the background of 4D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black holes with anti-de Sitter (AdS) asymptotics and calculate the quasinormal modes. Mainly, we show that the quasinormal spectrum consists of two different branches, a branch perturbative in the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant $α$ and another branch nonperturbative in $α$. The perturbative branch consists of complex quasinormal frequencies that approximate to the quasinormal frequencies of the Schwarzschild AdS black hole in the limit of a null coupling constant. On the other hand, the nonperturbati…
Motivated by the recent interest in quantization of black hole area spectrum, we consider the area spectrum of Schwarzschild, BTZ, extremal Reissner-Nordström, near extremal Schwarzschild-de Sitter, and Kerr black holes. Based on the proposal by Bekenstein and others that the black hole area spectrum is discrete and equally spaced, we implement Kunstatter's method to derive the area spectrum for these black holes. We show that although as Schwarzschild black hole the spectrum is discrete, it is non equispaced in general. In the other hand the reduced phase space quantization is another techniq…
We study Dirac quasinormal modes of Schwarzschild-Anti-de Sitter (Schwarzschild-AdS) black holes, following the generic principle for allowed boundary conditions proposed in \cite{PhysRevD.92.124006}. After deriving the equations of motion for Dirac fields on the aforementioned background, we impose vanishing energy flux boundary conditions to solve these equations. We find a set of two Robin boundary conditions are allowed. These two boundary conditions are used to calculate Dirac normal modes on empty AdS and quasinormal modes on Schwarzschild-AdS black holes. In the former case, we recover …
In this paper, we show how the quasinormal modes (QNMs) arise from the perturbations of massive scalar fields propagating in the curved background by using the artificial neural networks. To this end, we architect a special algorithm for the feedforward neural network method (FNNM) to compute the QNMs complying with the certain types of boundary conditions. To test the reliability of the method, we consider two black hole spacetimes whose QNMs are well-known: $4D$ pure de Sitter (dS) and five-dimensional Schwarzschild anti-de Sitter (AdS) black holes. Using the FNNM, the QNMs of are computed n…
Using the quasinormal modes of a massless scalar perturbation, we investigate the small/large black hole phase transition in the Lorentz symmetry breaking massive gravity. We mainly focus on two issues: i) the sign change of slope of the quasinormal mode frequencies in the complex-$ω$ diagram; ii) the behaviors of the imaginary part of the quasinormal mode frequencies along the isobaric or isothermal processes. For the first issue, our result shows that, at low fixed temperature or pressure, the phase transition can be probed by the sign change of slope. While increasing the temperature or pre…

Holography relates the quasinormal modes frequencies of AdS black holes to the pole structure of the dual field theory propagator. These modes thus provide the timescale for the approach to thermal equilibrium in the CFT. Here, we study how such pole structure and, in particular, the time to equilibrium can get modified in the presence of a black hole hair. More precisely, we consider in AdS a set of relaxed boundary conditions that allow for a low decaying graviton mode near the boundary, which triggers an additional degree of freedom. We solve the scalar field response on such background ana…
We compute the gravitational quasinormal modes of the global AdS_5-Schwarzschild solution. We show how to use the holographic dual of these modes to describe a thermal plasma of finite extent expanding in a slightly anisotropic fashion. We compare these flows with the behavior of quark-gluon plasmas produced in relativistic heavy ion collisions by estimating the elliptic flow coefficient and the thermalization time.
We show that the hidden conformal symmetry of the Schwarzschild black hole is realized from the AdS$_2$ sector of the AdS$_2\times S^2$, but not from the Rindler spacetime which is the genuine near-horizon geometry of the Schwarzschild black hole. This implies that purely imaginary quasinormal frequencies obtained using the hidden conformal symmetry is not suitable for describing the largely damped modes around the Schwarzschild black hole.
We consider the dynamics of a probe fermion charged under a U(1) Maxwell field and a two form potential $B_{(2)}$ in a five dimensional gravity background. The gravity background is constructed from a new solution we find of type IIB supergravity. This new solution is expected to be dual to non-commutative Yang-Mills theory in the 't Hooft limit with global U(1) currents. We study the zero frequency, near horizon behavior of the fermion, where the equations of motion reduce to that of two interacting fermions in AdS$_2$ with an electric field. We show that the operator dimensions in the AdS$_2…
In this paper, we first investigate the thermal stability of black holes in conformal Weyl gravity with a comparison with the Schwarzschild black holes. Then, we consider a minimally coupled massive scalar perturbation and calculate the quasinormal modes in asymptotically dS spacetime by employing the sixth order WKB approximation and asymptotic iteration method. The deviations from those of the Schwarzschild-dS solutions are obtained and the possibility of the presence of quasi-resonance modes for Weyl black hole solutions is investigated. Finally, we consider a massless scalar perturbation i…
It has recently been found that quasinormal modes of asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS) black holes in theories with higher curvature corrections may help to describe the regime of intermediate 't Hooft coupling in the dual field theory. Here, we consider quasinormal modes of a scalar field in the background of spherical Gauss--Bonnet--anti-de Sitter (AdS) black holes. In general, the eigenvalues of wave equations are found here numerically, but at a fixed Gauss-Bonnet constant $α= R^2/2$ (where $R$ is the AdS radius), an exact solution of the scalar field equation has been obtained. Remarkab…
Here we shall show that there is no other instability for the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-anti-de Sitter (AdS) black holes, than the eikonal one and consider the features of the quasinormal spectrum in the stability sector in detail. The obtained quasinormal spectrum consists from the two essentially different types of modes: perturbative and non-perturbative in the Gauss-Bonnet coupling $α$. The sound and hydrodynamic modes of the perturbative branch can be expressed through their Schwazrschild-AdS limits by adding a linear in $α$ correction to the damping rates: $ω\approx Re(ω_{SAdS}) - Im(ω_{SAdS…
We compute the quasinormal modes associated with decay of the massless scalar filed around a small Schwarzschild-Anti-de-Sitter black hole. The computations shows that when the horizon radius is much less than the anti-de-Sitter radius, the imaginary part of the frequency goes to zero as $r_+^{d-2}$ while the real part of $ω$ decreases to its minimum and then goes to $d-1$. Thus the quasinormal modes approach the usual AdS modes in the limit $r_+ -> 0$. This agrees with suggestions of Horowitz et al (Phys.Rev. D62 024027 (2000)).
We derive a quantization formula of Bohr-Sommerfeld type for computing quasinormal frequencies for scalar perturbations in an AdS black hole in the limit of large scalar mass or spatial momentum. We then apply the formula to find poles in retarded Green functions of boundary CFTs on $R^{1,d-1}$ and $RxS^{d-1}$. We find that when the boundary theory is perturbed by an operator of dimension $Δ>> 1$, the relaxation time back to equilibrium is given at zero momentum by ${1 \over ΔπT} << {1 \over πT}$. Turning on a large spatial momentum can significantly increase it. For a generic scalar operator …
We revisit the study of the probe scalar quasinormal modes of a class of three-charge supersymmetric microstate geometries. We compute the real and imaginary parts of the quasinormal modes and show that in the parameter range when the geometries have large AdS region, the spectrum is precisely reproduced from a D1-D5 orbifold CFT analysis. The spectrum includes the slow decaying modes pointed out by Eperon, Reall, and Santos. We analyse in detail the nature of the quasinormal modes by studying the scalar wavefunction. We show that these modes correspond to slow leakage of excitation from AdS t…
Complex frequencies associated with quasinormal modes for large Reissner-Nordstr$\ddot{o}$m Anti-de Sitter black holes have been computed. These frequencies have close relation to the black hole charge and do not linearly scale with the black hole temperature as in Schwarzschild Anti-de Sitter case. In terms of AdS/CFT correspondence, we found that the bigger the black hole charge is, the quicker for the approach to thermal equilibrium in the CFT. The properties of quasinormal modes for $l>0$ have also been studied.
We revisit the subject of one-loop determinants in AdS$_3$ gravity via the quasinormal mode method. Our goal is to evaluate a one-loop determinant with chiral boundary conditions for the metric field; chirality is achieved by imposing Dirichlet boundary conditions on certain components while others satisfy Neumann. Along the way, we give a generalization of the quasinormal mode method for stationary (non-static) thermal backgrounds, and propose a treatment for Neumann boundary conditions in this framework. We evaluate the graviton one-loop determinant on the Euclidean BTZ background with parit…
