We consider the dynamics of a probe fermion charged under a U(1) Maxwell field and a two form potential $B_{(2)}$ in a five dimensional gravity background. The gravity background is constructed from a new solution we find of type IIB supergravity. This new solution is expected to be dual to non-commutative Yang-Mills theory in the 't Hooft limit with global U(1) currents. We study the zero frequency, near horizon behavior of the fermion, where the equations of motion reduce to that of two interacting fermions in AdS$_2$ with an electric field. We show that the operator dimensions in the AdS$_2$ space are complex, leading to the two components of the retarded Green's function in the dual theory to be complex conjugates of each other. In order to preserve unitarity, this result implies there are no zero frequency quasinormal modes in our system. This has important implications for generalizations of recent holographic Fermi liquid setups with AdS$_2$ regions, as it suggests that infinite lifetime excitations can have energies above/below the chemical potential. Therefore, the Fermi energy may not be uniquely set by the chemical potential. Furthermore, since the gravity background breaks rotational symmetry along the spatial directions of the dual Yang-Mills theory, we do not expect the Fermi surface to be spherical in shape in momentum space.
To obtain fermionic quasinormal modes, the Dirac equation for two types of black holes is investigated. For the first type of black hole, the quasinormal modes have continuous spectrum with negative imaginary part that provides the stability of black hole geometry. For the second type of the black hole, the quasinormal modes have discrete spectrum and are completely imaginary. This type of the black hole appears to be stable for arbitrary masses of fermion field perturbations.
We analyze the fermionic quasinormal modes of the BTZ black hole in the presence of space-time noncommutativity. Our analysis exploits a duality between a spinless and spinning BTZ black hole, the spin being proportional to the noncommutative deformation parameter. Using the AdS/CFT correspondence we show that the horizon temperatures obtained from the dual CFT pick up noncommutative contributions. We demonstrate the equivalence between the quasinormal and non-quasinormal modes for the noncommutative fermionic probes, which provides further evidence of holography in the noncommutative setting.…
We study the holographic duals of bosonic and fermionic fields and compute their Quasinormal Frequencies (QNF) by exploiting that they are massive charged fields in $\mathrm{AdS_2 \times \mathcal{K}}$. In particular, we assess the stability of the scalar and fermionic operators in Myers-Perry's black holes with equal angular momenta. We compute the central charge and the Hawking-entropy and introduce extremality parameters to determine the properties of the dual CFT. Then, we briefly discuss how detection of Spin-2 fields can pave the way for more deep understanding of the holographic principl…
In this work, we present the quasinormal modes of a fermionic field in the background of Gauss-Bonnet-AdS black holes. We find exact solutions for $D=5$ at the fixed value $α=R^2/2$ of the Gauss--Bonnet coupling constant, with $R$ denoting the AdS radius, and we find numerical solutions for some range of values of the coupling constant $α$ and $D=5, 6$. Mainly, we find two branches of quasinormal frequencies, a branch perturbative in the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant $α$, and another branch nonperturbative in $α$. The phenomena of nonperturbative modes, which seem to be quite general in theor…
We study charged massless fermionic perturbations in the background of $4$-dimensional linear dilaton black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory with double Liouville-type potentials. We present the analytical fermionic quasinormal modes, whose Dirac equations are solved in terms of hypergeometric functions. We also discuss the stability of these black holes under the charged fermionic perturbations.
In the framework of the Lorentz symmetry breaking (LSB), we investigate the quasinormal modes (QNMs) and the greybody factors (GFs) of the Kerr-like black hole spacetime obtained from the bumblebee gravity model. In particular, we analyze the scalar and fermionic perturbations of the black hole within the framework of both semi-analytic WKB method and the time domain approach. The impacts of the LSB on the bosonic/fermionic QNMs and GFs of the Kerr-like black hole are investigated in detail. The obtained results are graphically depicted and discussed.
We study the propagation of massless fermionic fields in the background of a three-dimensional Lifshitz black hole, which is a solution of conformal gravity. The black hole solution is characterized by a null dynamical exponent. Then, we compute analytically the quasinormal modes, the area spectrum, and the absorption cross section for fermionic fields. The analysis of the quasinormal modes shows that the fermionic perturbations are stable in this background. The area and entropy spectrum are evenly spaced. At the low frequency limit, it is observed that there is a range of values of the angul…
Quasinormal modes of scalar, electromagnetic, and gravitational fields in the extreme Schwarzschild-de Sitter background are known to be expressed in analytic form as eigenvalues of the Pöschl-Teller wavelike equation. We show that perturbations of fermionic fields (given by Dirac and Rarita-Schwinger equations) do not lead to the Pöschl-Teller effective potential. Nevertheless, using the Frobenius method we find quasinormal modes analytically in this case as well. We write down the analytical formula for quasinormal frequencies of the near-extreme Schwarzschild-de Sitter black holes, which is…
Recently, the anomalous decay rate of quasinormal modes has been studied for some geometries under scalar field perturbations, which occurs when the longest-lived modes are the ones with higher angular number, as well as, the existence of a critical scalar field mass, i.e the value of scalar field mass such that the decay rate does not depend appreciably on the angular number, and beyond which the behaviour of the decay rate is inverted. Here, we consider the propagation of fermionic fields in the background of Schwarzschild de Sitter black holes, and we show that the anomalous decay rate beha…
We extend the results of arXiv:1401.7016, computing one loop partition functions for massive fields with spin half in AdS_2 using the quasinormal mode method proposed by Denef, Hartnoll, and Sachdev in arXiv:0908.2657. We find the finite representations of SO(2,1) for spin zero and spin half, consisting of a highest weight state |h\rangle and descendants with non-unitary values of h. These finite representations capture the poles and zeroes of the one loop determinants. Together with the asymptotic behavior of the partition functions (which can be easily computed using a large mass heat kernel…
We construct higher spin quasinormal modes algebraically in $D$-dimensional de Sitter spacetime using the ambient space formalism. The quasinormal modes fall into two nonunitary lowest-weight representations of $\mathfrak{so}(1, D)$. From a local QFT point of view, the lowest-weight quasinormal modes of massless higher spin fields are produced by gauge-invariant boundary conserved currents and boundary higher-spin Weyl tensors inserted at the southern pole of the past boundary. We also show that the quasinormal spectrum of a massless/massive spin-$s$ field is precisely encoded in the Harish-Ch…
Inspired by a recent model of Osuga and Page, we propose an explicitly unitary fermionic toy model for transferring information from a black hole to the outgoing radiation. The model treats the unitary evolution as a composition of the Hawking pair creation outside the black hole and of pair annihilation inside the black hole.
We study Dirac quasinormal modes of Schwarzschild-Anti-de Sitter (Schwarzschild-AdS) black holes, following the generic principle for allowed boundary conditions proposed in \cite{PhysRevD.92.124006}. After deriving the equations of motion for Dirac fields on the aforementioned background, we impose vanishing energy flux boundary conditions to solve these equations. We find a set of two Robin boundary conditions are allowed. These two boundary conditions are used to calculate Dirac normal modes on empty AdS and quasinormal modes on Schwarzschild-AdS black holes. In the former case, we recover …

The fermionic fields constructed from Elko have several unexpected properties. They satisfy the Klein-Gordon but not the Dirac equation and are of mass dimension one instead of three-half. Starting with the Klein-Gordon Lagrangian, we initiate a careful study of the symmetries and interactions of these fermions and their higher-spin generalisations. We find, although the fermions are of mass dimension one, the four-point fermionic self-interaction violates unitarity at high-energy. Therefore, it cannot be a fundamental interaction of the theory. It follows that for the spin-half fermions, the …
The regularization proposed in [D.~Glavan and C.~Lin, Phys.\ Rev.\ Lett.\ {\bf 124}, 081301 (2020)] led to the black hole solutions which turned out to be the solutions of the consistent well-defined $4$-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravity suggested in [K.~Aoki, M.~Gorji and S.~Mukohyama, arXiv:2005.03859]. Recently the quasinormal modes of bosonic and fermionic fields for this theory were studied. Here we calculate quasinormal frequencies of the test scalar, electromagnetic and Dirac fields for the spherically symmetric black hole in the novel $4D$ Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-de Sit…
In this short note, we comment on the existence of two more fermionic unitary minimal models not included in recent work by Hsieh, Nakayama, and Tachikawa. These theories are obtained by fermionizing the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry of the m=11 and m=12 exceptional unitary minimal models. Furthermore, these should be the only missing cases.
In quantum field theory, particle creation occurs, in general, when an intense external field, such as an electromagnetic field, breaks time translational invariance. This leads to an ambiguity in the definition of the vacuum state. In cosmological backgrounds this ambiguity has been reduced by imposing that the quantization preserves the symmetries of the system and that the dynamics is unitarily implemented. In this work, we apply these requirements to the quantization of a massive charged fermionic field coupled to a classical time-dependent homogeneous electric field, extending previous st…
The anomalous decay rate of the quasinormal modes occurs when the longest-lived modes are the ones with higher angular number. Such behaviour has been recently studied in different static spacetimes, for scalar and fermionic perturbations, being observed in both cases. In this work, we extend the existent studies to the charged spacetimes, namely, the Reissner-Nordström, the Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter and the Reissner-Nordström-Anti-de Sitter black holes. We show that the anomalous decay rate behaviour of the scalar field perturbations is present for every charged geometry in the photon sphe…
We give a pedagogical introduction to black holes (BHs) greybody factors (GFs) and quasinormal modes (QNMs) and share the recent developments on those subjects. In this study, our primary focus will be on the bosonic and fermionic GFs and QNMs of various BH and brane geometries and reveal the fingerprints of the invisibles with the radiation spectra to be obtained by the WKB approximation and bounding the Bogoliubov coefficients (together with the Miller-Good transformation) methods. Abelian Chern-Simons theory, characterized by the so-called $K$ matrix, has been quite successful in characterizing and classifying Abelian fractional quantum hall effect (FQHE) as well as symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases, especially for bosonic SPT phases. However, there are still some puzzles in dealing with fermionic SPT(fSPT) phases. In this paper, we utilize the Abelian Chern-Simons theory to study the fSPT phases protected by arbitrary Abelian total symmetry $G_f$. Comparing to the bosonic SPT phases, fSPT phases with Abelian total symmetry $G_f$ has three new features: (1) it…
We study Abelian braiding statistics of loop excitations in three-dimensional (3D) gauge theories with fermionic particles and the closely related problem of classifying 3D fermionic symmetry-protected topological (FSPT) phases with unitary symmetries. It is known that the two problems are related by turning FSPT phases into gauge theories through gauging the global symmetry of the former. We show that there exist certain types of Abelian loop braiding statistics that are allowed only in the the presence of fermionic particles, which correspond to 3D "intrinsic" FSPT phases, i.e., those that d…
We prove that the boundaries of all non-trivial 1+1 dimensional intrinsically fermionic symmetry-protected-topological phases, protected by finite on-site symmetries (unitary or anti-unitary), are supersymmetric quantum mechanical systems. This supersymmetry does not require any fine-tuning of the underlying Hamiltonian, arises entirely as a consequence of the boundary 't Hooft anomaly that classifies the phase and is related to a `Bose-Fermi' degeneracy different in nature from other well known degeneracies such as Kramers doublets.
Capturing the interplay between electronic correlations and many-particle entanglement requires a unified framework for Hamiltonian and eigenbasis renormalization. In this work, we apply the unitary renormalization group (URG) scheme developed in a companion work (Ref.[1]) to the study of two archetypal models of stongly correlated lattice electrons, one with translation invariance and one without. We obtain detailed insight into the emergence of various gapless and gapped phases of quantum electronic matter by computing effective Hamiltonians as well as entanglement signatures through their r…
