A class of C*-algebras is described for which the homomorphism from $C_0(0,1]$ to the algebra may be classified by means of the Cuntz semigroup functor. Examples are given of algebras--simple and non-simple--for which this classification fails. It is shown that a suitable suspension of the Cuntz semigroup functor deals successfully with some of these counterexamples.
In this paper, we prove that unital homomorphisms from continuous functions on a compact metric space to matrices over a C*-algebra with tracial rank at most one are approximately diagonalizable. We also consider some generalizations of this result.
A C*-metric algebra consists of a unital C*-algebra and a Leibniz Lip-norm on the C*-algebra. We show that if the Lip-norms concerned are lower semicontinuous, then any unital *-homomorphism from a C*-metric algebra to another one is necessarily Lipschitz. It results that the free product of two Lipschitz unital *-homomorphisms between C*-metric algebras coming from *-filtrations is still a Lipschitz unital *-homomorphism.
We study the $C^*$-algebras related to Mishchenko's version of asymptotic homomorphisms. In particular we show that their different versions are weakly homotopy equivalent but not isomorphic to each other. We give also the continuous version for these algebras.
We discuss when a unital homomorphism ϕ : C(X) \rightarrow A can be approximated by finite-dimensional homomorphisms, where X is a compact metric space and A is unital simple C*-algebra with tracial rank one. In this paper, we will give a necessary and sufficient condition.
In this paper, we investigate homomorphisms between $C^*$-ternary algebras and derivations on $C^*$-ternary algebras, associated with the following functional equation $$f(\frac{x_2-x_1}{3})+f(\frac{x_1-3x_3}{3})+f(\frac{3x_1+3x_3-x_2}{3})=f(x_1).$$ Moreover, we prove the generalized Hyers-Ulam -Rassias stability of homomorphisms in $C^*$-ternary algebras and of derivations on $C^*$-ternary algebras.
In this paper, we investigate Jordan *-homomorphisms on $C^*$-algebras associated with the following functional inequality $\|f(\frac{b-a}{3})+f(\frac{a-3c}{3})+f(\frac{3a+3c-b}{3})\| \leq \|f(a)\|.$ We moreover prove the superstability and the generalized Hyers-Ulam stability of Jordan *-homomorphisms on $C^*$-algebras associated with the following functional equation $$f(\frac{b-a}{3})+f(\frac{a-3c}{3})+f(\frac{3a+3c-b}{3})=f(a).$$
Let $A$ be a separable $C^*$-algebra and let $B$ be a stable $C^*$-algebra with a strictly positive element. We consider the (semi)group $\Ext^{as}(A,B)$ (resp. $\Ext(A,B)$) of homotopy classes of asymptotic (resp. of genuine) homomorphisms from $A$ to the corona algebra $M(B)/B$ and the natural map $i:\Ext(A,B)\ar\Ext^{as}(A,B)$. We show that if $A$ is a suspension then $\Ext^{as}(A,B)$ coincides with $E$-theory of Connes and Higson and the map $i$ is surjective. In particular any asymptotic homomorphism from $SA$ to $M(B)/B$ is homotopic to some genuine homomorphism.
Let $A$, $B$ be C*-algebras; $A$ separable, $B$ $σ$-unital and stable. We introduce a notion of translation invariance for asymptotic homomorphisms from $SA=C_0(\mathbb R)\otimes A$ to $B$ and show that the Connes-Higson construction applied to any extension of $A$ by $B$ is homotopic to a translation invariant asymptotic homomorphism. In the other direction we give a construction which produces extensions of $A$ by $B$ out of such a translation invariant asymptotic homomorphism. This leads to our main result; that the homotopy classes of extensions coincide with the homotopy classes of transl…
Let $A$ and $B$ be C$^*$-algebras. A linear map $T:A\to B$ is said to be a $^*$-homomorphism at an element $z\in A$ if $a b^*=z$ in $A$ implies $T (a b^*) =T (a) T (b)^* =T(z)$, and $ c^* d=z$ in $A$ gives $T (c^* d) =T (c)^* T (d) =T(z).$ Assuming that $A$ is unital, we prove that every linear map $T: A\to B$ which is a $^*$-homomorphism at the unit of $A$ is a Jordan $^*$-homomorphism. If $A$ is simple and infinite, then we establish that a linear map $T: A\to B$ is a $^*$-homomorphism if and only if $T$ is a $^*$-homomorphism at the unit of $A$. For a general unital C$^*$-algebra $A$ and a …
Let $A,B$ be two unital $C^*-$algebras. We prove that every almost unital almost linear mapping $h:A\longrightarrow B$ which satisfies $h(3^nuy+3^nyu) = h(3^nu)h(y)+h(y)h(3^nu)$ for all $u\in U(A)$, all $y\in A$, and all $n = 0, 1, 2,...$, is a Jordan homomorphism. Also, for a unital $C^*-$algebra $A$ of real rank zero, every almost unital almost linear continuous mapping $h:A\longrightarrow B$ is a Jordan homomorphism when $h(3^nuy+3^nyu) = h(3^nu)h(y)+h(y)h(3^nu)$ holds for all $u\in I_1(A_{sa})$, all $y\in A,$ and all $n = 0, 1, 2,... ~$. Furthermore, we investigate the Hyers--Ulam--Rassias…
We define and examine sequentially split $*$-homomorphisms between $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras and $\mathrm{C}^*$-dynamical systems. For a $*$-homomorphism, the property of being sequentially split can be regarded as an approximate weakening of being a split-injective inclusion of $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras. We show for a sequentially split $*$-homomorphism that a multitude of $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebraic approximation properties pass from the target algebra to the domain algebra, including virtually all important approximation properties currently used in the classification theory of $\mathrm{C}^*$-alge…
We provide a direct and elementary proof of the equivalence between the weak asymptotic homomorphism property for the pair of group von Neumann algebras $L(H)\subset L(G)$ and the embedding into $H$ of the one sided quasi-normalizer of the pair $H<G$, as it is stated by J. Fang, M. Gao and R. R. Smith in a recent article, and we extend the result to triples of groups $H<K<G$.
The notion of a quantum family of maps has been introduced in the framework of C*-algebras. As in the classical case, one may consider a quantum family of maps preserving additional structures (e.g. quantum family of maps preserving a state). In this paper we define a quantum family of homomorphisms of locally compact quantum groups. Roughly speaking, we show that such a family is classical. The purely algebraic counterpart of the discussed notion, i.e. a quantum family of homomorphisms of Hopf algebras, is introduced and the algebraic counterpart of the aforementioned result is proved. Moreov…
We classify unital monomorphisms into certain simple Z-stable C^*-algebras up to approximate unitary equivalence. The domain algebra C is allowed to be any unital separable commutative C^*-algebra, or any unital simple separable nuclear Z-stable C^*-algebra satisfying the UCT such that C\otimes B is of tracial rank zero for a UHF algebra B. The target algebra A is allowed to be any unital simple separable Z-stable C^*-algebra such that A\otimes B has tracial rank zero for a UHF algebra B, or any unital simple separable exact Z-stable C^*-algebra whose projections separate traces and whose extr…
We prove that every (not necessarily linear nor continuous) 2-local triple homomorphism from a JBW$^*$-triple into a JB$^*$-triple is linear and a triple homomorphism. Consequently, every 2-local triple homomorphism from a von Neumann algebra (respectively, from a JBW$^*$-algebra) into a C$^*$-algebra (respectively, into a JB$^*$-algebra) is linear and a triple homomorphism.
We define a tracial analogue of the sequentially split $*$-homomorphism between $C^*$-algebras of Barlak and Szabó and show that several important approximation properties related to the classification theory of $C^*$-algebras pass from the target algebra to the domain algebra. Then we show that the tracial Rokhlin property of the finite group $G$ action on a $C^*$-algebra $A$ gives rise to a tracial version of sequentially split $*$-homomorphism from $A\rtimes_αG$ to $M_{|G|}(A)$ and the tracial Rokhlin property of an inclusion $C^*$-algebras $A\subset P$ with a conditional expectation $E:A \…
Inspired by some recent development on the theory about projection valued dilations for operator valued measures or more generally bounded homomorphism dilations for bounded linear maps on Banach algebras, we explore a pure algebraic version of the dilation theory for linear systems acting on unital algebras and vector spaces. By introducing two natural dilation structures, namely the canonical and the universal dilation systems, we prove that every linearly minimal dilation is equivalent to a reduced homomorphism dilation of the universal dilation, and all the linearly minimal homomorphism di…
We prove some stability results for certain classes of C*-algebras. We prove that whenever $A$ is a finite-dimensional C*-algebra, $B$ is a C*-algebra and $ϕ\colon A\to B$ is approximately a $^*$-homomorphism then there is an actual $^*$-homomorphism close to $ϕ$ by a factor depending only on how far is $ϕ$ from being a $^*$-homomorphism and not on $A$ or $B$.
We classify equivariant *-homomorphisms between C*-dynamical systems associated to actions of finite groups on C*-algebras with the Rokhlin property. In addition, the given actions are classified. An obstruction is obtained for the Cuntz semigroup of a C*-algebra allowing such an action. We also obtain an equivariant UHF-absorption result.
We characterize completely bounded normal Jordan $*$-homomorphisms acting on von Neumann algebras. We also characterize completely positive isometries acting on noncommutative $\mathrm{L}^p$-spaces.
Let $\mathcal{A}$ be a unital $C^{*}$-algebra. We consider Jordan $*$-homomorphisms on $C(X, \mathcal{A})$ and Jordan $*$-homomorphisms on $\operatorname{Lip}(X,\mathcal{A})$. More precisely, for any unital $C^{*}$-algebra $\mathcal{A}$, we prove that every Jordan $*$-homomorphism on $C(X, \mathcal{A})$ and every Jordan $*$-homomorphism on $\operatorname{Lip}(X,\mathcal{A})$ is represented as a weighted composition operator by using the irreducible representations of $\mathcal{A}$. In addition, when $\mathcal{A}_1$ and $\mathcal{A}_2$ are primitive $C^{*}$-algebras, we characterize the Jordan …
A linear map $ϕ:{\mathcal A}\to {\mathcal B} $ between (Banach) algebras is called 3-homomorphism if $ϕ(abc)=ϕ(a)ϕ(b)ϕ(c)$ for each $a, b, c \in {\mathcal A}$. We investigate 3-homomorphisms on Banach algebras with bounded approximate identities and establish in two ways that every involution preserving homomorphism between $C^*$-algebras is norm decreasing.
An n-homomorphism between algebras is a linear map $ϕ: A \to B$ such that $ϕ(a_1 ... a_n) = ϕ(a_1)... ϕ(a_n)$ for all elements $a_1, >..., a_n \in A.$ Every homomorphism is an n-homomorphism, for all n >= 2, but the converse is false, in general. Hejazian et al. [7] ask: Is every *-preserving n-homomorphism between C*-algebras continuous? We answer their question in the affirmative, but the even and odd n arguments are surprisingly disjoint. We then use these results to prove stronger ones: If n >2 is even, then $ϕ$ is just an ordinary *-homomorphism. If n >= 3 is odd, then $ϕ$ is a difference…
It is established that every (not necessarily linear) 2-local $^*$-homomorphism from a von Neumann algebra into a C$^*$-algebra is linear and a $^*$-homomorphism. In the setting of (not necessarily linear) 2-local $^*$-homomorphism from a compact C$^*$-algebra we prove that the same conclusion remains valid. We also prove that every 2-local Jordan $^*$-homomorphism from a JBW$^*$-algebra into a JB$^*$-algebra is linear and a Jordan $^*$-homomorphism.
We survey the results on linear local and 2-local homomorphisms and zero products preserving operators between C$^*$-algebras, and we incorporate some new precise observations and results to prove that every bounded linear 2-local homomorphism between C$^*$-algebras is a homomorphism. Consequently, every linear 2-local $^*$-homomorphism between C$^*$-algebras is a $^*$-homomorphism.
We show that a bounded, linear map between C*-algebras is a weighted $\ast$-homomorphism (the central compression of a $\ast$-homomorphism) if and only if it preserves zero-products, range-orthogonality, and domain-orthogonality. It follows that a self-adjoint, bounded, linear map is a weighted $\ast$-homomorphism if and only if it preserves zero-products. As an application we show that a linear map between C*-algebras is completely positive, order zero in the sense of Winter-Zacharias if and only if it is positive and preserves zero-products.
In this note, we will discuss what kind of operators between C*-algebras preserves Jordan triple products {a,b,c}= (ab*c + cb*a)/2. These include especially isometries and disjointness preserving operators.
Let $A$, $B$ be separable C*-algebras, $B$ stable. Elements of the E-theory group $E(A,B)$ are represented by asymptotic homomorphisms from the second suspension of $A$ to $B$. Our aim is to represent these elements by (families of) maps from $A$ itself to $B$. We have to pay for that by allowing these maps to be even further from $*$-homomorphisms. We prove that $E(A,B)$ can be represented by pairs $(φ^+,φ^-)$ of maps from $A$ to $B$ that are not necessarily asymptotic homomorphisms, but have the same deficiency from being ones. Not surprisingly, such pairs of maps can be viewed as pairs of a…
We investigate conditions for the extendibility of continuous algebra homomorphisms $ϕ$ from the Fourier algebra $A(F)$ of a locally compact group $F$ to the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra $B(G)$ of a locally compact group $G$ to maps between the corresponding $L^\infty$ algebras which are weak* continuous. When $ϕ$ is completely bounded and $F$ is amenable, it is induced by a piecewise affine map $α: Y\to F$ where $Y\subseteq G$. We show that extendibility of $ϕ$ is equivalent to $α$ being an open map. We also study the dual problem for contractive homomorphisms $ϕ: L^1(F)\to M(G)$. We show that $…
The aim of the present work is to study the Riesz decomposition relative to a C*-algebra homomorphism T : A --> B. We prove that under some conditions on T, T-Riesz elements can be decomposed into the sum of almost T-null element and quasi-nilpotent element. Also the so-called polyno- mial T-Riesz and generalized T-Riesz decompositions will be discussed.
Every homomorphism $φ: B(G) \rightarrow B(H)$ between Fourier-Stieltjes algebras on locally compact groups $G$ and $H$ is determined by a continuous mapping $α: Y \rightarrow Δ(B(G))$, where $Y$ is a set in the open coset ring of $H$ and $Δ(B(G))$ is the Gelfand spectrum of $B(G)$ (a $*$-semigroup). We exhibit a large collection of maps $α$ for which $φ=j_α: B(G) \rightarrow B(H)$ is a completely positive/completely contractive/completely bounded homomorphism and establish converse statements in several instances. For example, we fully characterize all completely positive/completely contractiv…
We prove that every weak-local derivation on a C$^*$-algebra is continuous, and the same conclusion remains valid for weak$^*$-local derivations on von Neumann algebras. We further show that weak-local derivations on C$^*$-algebras and weak$^*$-local derivations on von Neumann algebras are derivations. We also study the connections between bilocal derivations and bilocal $^*$-automorphism with our notions of extreme-strong-local derivations and automorphisms.
We study a pair of $C^*$-algebras by associating a $*$-homomorphism from $A$ to $B$ allowing an approximate left-inverse to the sequence algebra of $A$ in a manner reminiscent of several tracial approximation properties. We are particularly interested how regularity properties in the Elliott classification program pass from $B$ to $A$. Among them, we show that the strict comparison property and $\mathcal{Z}$-stability pass from $B$ to $A$ in our setting.
The purpose of this short note is to prove that if $A$ and $B$ are unital C*-algebras and $ϕ: A \to B$ is a unital *-preserving ring homomorphism, then $ϕ$ is contractive; i.e., $\| ϕ(a) \| \leq \| a \|$ for all $a \in A$. (Note that we do not assume $ϕ$ is linear.) We use this result to deduce a number of corollaries as well as characterize the form of such unital *-preserving ring homomorphisms. (This note may be of interest to C*-algebraists as well as algebraists who study noncommutative rings and algebras. It is meant to be accessible to a general mathematician and does not require any pr…
We explore the concept of a graph homomorphism through the lens of C$^*$-algebras and operator systems. We start by studying the various notions of a quantum graph homomorphism and examine how they are related to each other. We then define and study a C$^*$-algebra that encodes all the information about these homomorphisms and establish a connection between computational complexity and the representation of these algebras. We use this C$^*$-algebra to define a new quantum chromatic number and establish some basic properties of this number. We then suggest a way of studying these quantum graph …
We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of idempotents of arbitrarily large norms in the Fourier algebra A(G) and the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra B(G) of a locally compact group G. We prove that the existence of idempotents of arbitrarily large norm in B(G) implies the existence of homomorphisms of arbitrarily large norm from A(H) into B(G) for every locally compact group H. A partial converse is also obtained: the existence of homomorphisms of arbitrarily large norm from A(H) into B(G) for some amenable locally compact group H implies the existence of idempotents of arb…
We prove that if two nonzero homomorphisms from the Cuntz algebra O_infinity to a purely infinite simple C*-algebra have the same class in KK-theory, and if either both are unital or both are nonunital, then they are approximately unitarily equivalent. It follows that O_infinity is classifiable in the sense of Rordam. In particular, Rordam's classification theorem for direct limits of matrix algebras over even Cuntz algebras extends to direct limits involving both matrix algebras over even Cuntz algebras and corners of O_infinity for which the K_0 group can be an arbitrary countable abelian gr…
For locally compact groups G and H let A(G) denote the Fourier algebra of G and B(H) the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra of H. Any continuous piecewise affine map alpha:Y -> G (where Y is an element of the open coset ring of H) induces a completely bounded homomorphism Phi_alpha:A(G) -> B(H) by setting Phi_alpha u(.)=u(alpha(.)) on Y and Phi_alpha u=0 off of Y. We show that if G is amenable then any completely bounded homomorphism Phi:A(G) -> B(H) is of this form; and this theorem fails if G contains a discrete nonabelian free group. Our result generalises results of P.J. Cohen, B. Host and of the f…
We prove a complete analog of the Borsuk Homotopy Extension Theorem for arbitrary semiprojective C*-algebras. We also obtain some other results about semiprojective C*-algebras: a partial lifting theorem with specified quotient, a lifting result for homomorphisms close to a liftable homomorphism, and that sufficiently close homomorphisms from a semiprojective C*-algebra are homotopic.
Let $A$ and $B$ be C*-algebras and $φ\colon A\to B$ be a $*$-homomorphism. We discuss the properties of the kernel and (co-)image of the induced map $\mathrm{K}_{0}(φ)\colon \mathrm{K}_{0}(A) \to \mathrm{K}_{0}(B)$ on the level of K-theory. In particular, we are interested in the case that the co-image is torsion free, and show that it holds when $A$ and $ B $ are commutative and unital, $B$ has real rank zero, and $φ$ is unital and injective. We also show that $ A$ is embeddable in $B$ if $ \mathrm{K}_{0}(φ)$ is injective and $A$ has stable rank one and real rank zero.
We prove that if two homomorphisms from O_{\infty} to a purely infinite simple C*-algebra have the same class in KK-theory, and if either both are unital or both are nonunital, then they are approximately unitarily equivalent. It follows that O_{\infty} is classifiable in the sense of Rordam. In particular, Rordam's classification theorem for direct limits of matrix algebras over even Cuntz algebras extends to direct limits involving both matrix algebras over even Cuntz algebras and corners of O_{\infty}, for which the K_0-group can be an arbitrary countable abelian group with no even torsion.
The algebra $Ψ(M)$ of order zero pseudodifferential operators on a compact manifold $M$ defines a well-known $C^*$-extension of the algebra $C(S^*M)$ of continuous functions on the cospherical bundle $S^*M\subset T^*M$ by the algebra $\K$ of compact operators. In his proof of the index theorem, Higson defined and used an asymptotic homomorphism $T$ from $C_0(T^*M)$ to $\K$, which plays the role of a deformation for the commutative algebra $C_0(T^*M)$. Similar constructions exist also for operators and symbols with coefficients in a $C^*$-algebra. We show that the image of the above extension u…
We consider contractive homomorphisms of a planar algebra ${\mathcal A}(Ω)$ over a finitely connected bounded domain $Ω\subseteq \C$ and ask if they are necessarily completely contractive. We show that a homomorphism $ρ:{\mathcal A}(Ω) \to {\mathcal B}(\mathcal H)$ for which $\dim({\mathcal A}(Ω)/\ker ρ) = 2$ is the direct integral of homomorphisms $ρ_T$ induced by operators on two dimensional Hilbert spaces via a suitable functional calculus $ρ_T: f \mapsto f(T), f\in {\mathcal A}(Ω)$. It is well-known that contractive homomorphisms $ρ_T$, induced by a linear transformation $T:\C^2 \to \C^2$ …
For any countable graph $E$, we investigate the relationship between the Leavitt path algebra $L_{\C}(E)$ and the graph C*-algebra $C^*(E)$. For graphs $E$ and $F$, we examine ring homomorphisms, ring *-homomorphisms, algebra homomorphisms, and algebra *-homomorphisms between $L_{\C}(E)$ and $L_{\C}(F)$. We prove that in certain situations isomorphisms between $L_{\C}(E)$ and $L_{\C}(F)$ yield *-isomorphisms between the corresponding C*-algebras $C^*(E)$ and $C^*(F)$. Conversely, we show that *-isomorphisms between $C^*(E)$ and $C^*(F)$ produce isomorphisms between $L_{\C}(E)$ and $L_{\C}(F)$ …
We introduce the Jordan-strict topology on the multipliers algebra of a JB$^*$-algebra, a notion which was missing despite the fourty years passed after the first studies on Jordan multipliers. In case that a C$^*$-algebra $A$ is regarded as a JB$^*$-algebra, the J-strict topology of $M(A)$ is precisely the well-studied C$^*$-strict topology. We prove that every JB$^*$-algebra $\mathfrak{A}$ is J-strict dense in its multipliers algebra $M(\mathfrak{A})$, and that latter algebra is J-strict complete. We show that continuous surjective Jordan homomorphisms, triple homomorphisms, and orthogonalit…
A triple of finite von Neumann algebras $B\subseteq N\subseteq M$ is said to have the relative weak asymptotic homomorphism property if there exists a net of unitary operators $\{u_λ\}_{λ\in Λ}$ in $B$ such that $$\lim_λ|\mathbb{E}}_B(xu_λy)-{\mathbb{E}}_B({\mathbb{E}}_N(x)u_λ{\mathbb{E}}_N(y))\|_2=0$$ for all $x,y\in M$. We prove that a triple of finite von Neumann algebras $B\subseteq N\subseteq M$ has the relative weak asymptotic homomorphism property if and only if $N$ contains the set of all $x\in M$ such that $Bx\subseteq \sum_{i=1}^n x_iB$ for a finite number of elements $x_1,...,x_n$ i…
We consider induced coactions on C*-algebras along a homomorphism of locally compact quantum groups which need not give a closed quantum subgroup. Our approach generalizes the induced coactions constructed by Vaes, and also includes certain fixed point algebras. We focus on the case when the homomorphism satisfies a quantum analogue of properness. Induced coactions along such a homomorphism still admit the natural formulations of various properties known in the case of a closed quantum subgroup, such as imprimitivity and adjointness with restriction. Also, we show a relationship of induced coa…
We prove that if $ρ: A(H) \to B(G)$ is a homomorphism between the Fourier algebra of a locally compact group $H$ and the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra of a locally compact group $G$ induced by a mixed piecewise affine map $α: G \to H$, then $ρ$ extends to a w*-w* continuous map between the corresponding $L^\infty$ algebras if and only if $α$ is an open map. Using techniques from TRO equivalence of masa bimodules we prove various transference results: We show that when $α$ is a group homomorphism which pushes forward the Haar measure of $G$ to a measure absolutely continuous with respect to the Haa…

Let $n\ge 2$, let $\mathcal{R}_n$ be the graph consisting of one vertex and $n$ loops and let $\mathcal{R}_{n^-}$ be its Cuntz splice. Let $L_n=L(\mathcal{R}_n)$ and $L_{n^-}=L(\mathcal{R}_{n^-})$ be the Leavitt path algebras over a unital ring $\ell$. Let $C_m$ be the cyclic group on $2\le m\le \infty$ elements. Equip $L_n$ and $L_{n^-}$ with their natural $C_m$-gradings. We show that under mild conditions on $\ell$, which are satisfied for example when $\ell$ is a field or a PID, there are no unital $C_m$-graded ring homomorphisms $L_n\to L_{n^-}$ nor in the opposite direction.
