The algebra $Ψ(M)$ of order zero pseudodifferential operators on a compact manifold $M$ defines a well-known $C^*$-extension of the algebra $C(S^*M)$ of continuous functions on the cospherical bundle $S^*M\subset T^*M$ by the algebra $\K$ of compact operators. In his proof of the index theorem, Higson defined and used an asymptotic homomorphism $T$ from $C_0(T^*M)$ to $\K$, which plays the role of a deformation for the commutative algebra $C_0(T^*M)$. Similar constructions exist also for operators and symbols with coefficients in a $C^*$-algebra. We show that the image of the above extension under the Connes--Higson construction is $T$ and that this extension can be reconstructed out of $T$. This explains, why the classical approach to the index theory coincides with the one based on asymptotic homomorphisms.
Let $A$, $B$ be C*-algebras; $A$ separable, $B$ $σ$-unital and stable. We introduce a notion of translation invariance for asymptotic homomorphisms from $SA=C_0(\mathbb R)\otimes A$ to $B$ and show that the Connes-Higson construction applied to any extension of $A$ by $B$ is homotopic to a translation invariant asymptotic homomorphism. In the other direction we give a construction which produces extensions of $A$ by $B$ out of such a translation invariant asymptotic homomorphism. This leads to our main result; that the homotopy classes of extensions coincide with the homotopy classes of transl…
We prove that if two nonzero homomorphisms from the Cuntz algebra O_infinity to a purely infinite simple C*-algebra have the same class in KK-theory, and if either both are unital or both are nonunital, then they are approximately unitarily equivalent. It follows that O_infinity is classifiable in the sense of Rordam. In particular, Rordam's classification theorem for direct limits of matrix algebras over even Cuntz algebras extends to direct limits involving both matrix algebras over even Cuntz algebras and corners of O_infinity for which the K_0 group can be an arbitrary countable abelian gr…
We prove that if two homomorphisms from O_{\infty} to a purely infinite simple C*-algebra have the same class in KK-theory, and if either both are unital or both are nonunital, then they are approximately unitarily equivalent. It follows that O_{\infty} is classifiable in the sense of Rordam. In particular, Rordam's classification theorem for direct limits of matrix algebras over even Cuntz algebras extends to direct limits involving both matrix algebras over even Cuntz algebras and corners of O_{\infty}, for which the K_0-group can be an arbitrary countable abelian group with no even torsion.
For any countable graph $E$, we investigate the relationship between the Leavitt path algebra $L_{\C}(E)$ and the graph C*-algebra $C^*(E)$. For graphs $E$ and $F$, we examine ring homomorphisms, ring *-homomorphisms, algebra homomorphisms, and algebra *-homomorphisms between $L_{\C}(E)$ and $L_{\C}(F)$. We prove that in certain situations isomorphisms between $L_{\C}(E)$ and $L_{\C}(F)$ yield *-isomorphisms between the corresponding C*-algebras $C^*(E)$ and $C^*(F)$. Conversely, we show that *-isomorphisms between $C^*(E)$ and $C^*(F)$ produce isomorphisms between $L_{\C}(E)$ and $L_{\C}(F)$ …
We provide a direct and elementary proof of the equivalence between the weak asymptotic homomorphism property for the pair of group von Neumann algebras $L(H)\subset L(G)$ and the embedding into $H$ of the one sided quasi-normalizer of the pair $H<G$, as it is stated by J. Fang, M. Gao and R. R. Smith in a recent article, and we extend the result to triples of groups $H<K<G$.
We consider the semigroup $Ext(A,B)$ of extensions of a separable C*-algebra $A$ by a stable C*-algebra $B$ modulo unitary equivalence and modulo asymptotically split extensions. This semigroup contains the group $Ext^{-1/2}(A,B)$ of invertible elements (i.e. of semi-invertible extensions). We show that the functor $Ext^{1/2}(A,B)$ is homotopy invariant and that it coincides with the functor of homotopy classes of asymptotic homomorphisms from $C(\mathbb T)\otimes A$ to $M(B)$ that map $SA\subseteq C(\mathbb T)\otimes A$ into $B$.
Let $C$ be a unital AH-algebra and $A$ be a unital simple C*-algebra with tracial rank zero. It has been shown that two unital monomorphisms $ϕ, ψ: C\to A$ are approximately unitarily equivalent if and only if $$ [ϕ]=[ψ] {\rm in} KL(C,A) and τ\circ ϕ=τ\circ ψ\tforal τ\in T(A), $$ where $T(A)$ is the tracial state space of $A.$ In this paper we prove the following: Given $κ\in KL(C,A)$ with $κ(K_0(C)_+\setminus \{0\})\subset K_0(A)_+\setminus \{0\}$ and with $κ([1_C])=[1_A]$ and a continuous affine map $λ: T(A)\to T_{\mathtt{f}}(C)$ which is compatible with $κ,$ where $T_{\mathtt{f}}(C)$ is the…
We classify unital monomorphisms into certain simple Z-stable C^*-algebras up to approximate unitary equivalence. The domain algebra C is allowed to be any unital separable commutative C^*-algebra, or any unital simple separable nuclear Z-stable C^*-algebra satisfying the UCT such that C\otimes B is of tracial rank zero for a UHF algebra B. The target algebra A is allowed to be any unital simple separable Z-stable C^*-algebra such that A\otimes B has tracial rank zero for a UHF algebra B, or any unital simple separable exact Z-stable C^*-algebra whose projections separate traces and whose extr…
We prove the equivalence of two tensor products over a category of W*-algebras with normal (not necessarily unital) *-homomorphisms, defined by Guichardet and Dauns, respectively. This structure differs from the standard tensor product construction by Misonou--Takeda--Turumaru, which is based on weak topological completion, and does not have a categorical universality property.
Let $ξ:C^*(E)\to C^*(F)$ be a unital $*$-homomorphism between simple purely infinite Cuntz-Krieger algebras of finite graphs. We prove that there exists a unital $*$-homomorphism $ϕ:L(E)\to L(F)$ between the corresponding Leavitt path-algebras such that $ξ$ is homotopic to the map $\hatϕ:C^*(E)\to C^*(F)$ induced by completion. We show moreover that $\hatϕ$ is a homotopy equivalence in the $C^*$-algebraic sense if and only if $ϕ$ is a homotopy equivalence in the algebraic, polynomial sense. We deduce, in particular, that any isomorphism between simple purely infinite Cuntz-Krieger algebras is …
We introduce the concept of finitely coloured equivalence for unital *-homomorphisms between C*-algebras, for which unitary equivalence is the 1-coloured case. We use this notion to classify *-homomorphisms from separable, unital, nuclear C*-algebras into ultrapowers of simple, unital, nuclear, Z-stable C*-algebras with compact extremal trace space up to 2-coloured equivalence by their behaviour on traces; this is based on a 1-coloured classification theorem for certain order zero maps, also in terms of tracial data. As an application we calculate the nuclear dimension of non-AF, simple, separ…
Suppose $\mathcal{A}$ is a separable unital ASH C*-algebra, $\mathcal{R}$ is a sigma-finite II$_{\infty}$ factor von Neumann algebra, and $π,ρ:\mathcal{A}\rightarrow\mathcal{R}$ are unital $\ast$-homomorphisms such that, for every $a\in\mathcal{A}$, the range projections of $π\left( a\right) $ and $ρ\left( a\right) $ are Murray von Neuman equivalent in $\mathcal{R}% $. We prove that $π$ and $ρ$ are approximately unitarily equivalent modulo $\mathcal{K}_{\mathcal{R}}$, where $\mathcal{K}_{\mathcal{R}}$ is the norm closed ideal generated by the finite projections in $\mathcal{R}$. We also prove …
We note that the deep results of Grunewald and Segal on algorithmic problems for arithmetic groups imply the decidability of several matrix equivalence problems involving poset-blocked matrices over Z. Consequently, results of Eilers, Restorff, Ruiz and Sørensen imply that isomorphism and stable isomorphism of unital graph C*-algebras (including the Cuntz-Krieger algebras) are decidable. One can also decide flow equivalence for shifts of finite type, and isomorphism of Z-quiver representations (i.e., finite diagrams of homomorphisms of finitely generated abelian groups).
We study equivalence relations that arise from translation actions $Γ\curvearrowright G$ which are associated to dense embeddings $Γ<G$ of countable groups into second countable locally compact groups. Assuming that $G$ is simply connected and the action $Γ\curvearrowright G$ is strongly ergodic, we prove that $Γ\curvearrowright G$ is orbit equivalent to another such translation action $Λ\curvearrowright H$ if and only if there exists an isomorphism $δ:G\rightarrow H$ such that $δ(Γ)=Λ$. If $G$ is moreover a real algebraic group, then we establish analogous rigidity results for the translation…
We prove that if $ρ: A(H) \to B(G)$ is a homomorphism between the Fourier algebra of a locally compact group $H$ and the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra of a locally compact group $G$ induced by a mixed piecewise affine map $α: G \to H$, then $ρ$ extends to a w*-w* continuous map between the corresponding $L^\infty$ algebras if and only if $α$ is an open map. Using techniques from TRO equivalence of masa bimodules we prove various transference results: We show that when $α$ is a group homomorphism which pushes forward the Haar measure of $G$ to a measure absolutely continuous with respect to the Haa…
Let $C$ be a unital AH-algebra and let $A$ be a unital separable simple C*-algebra with tracial rank no more than one. Suppose that $ϕ, ψ: C\to A$ are two unital monomorphisms. With some restriction on $C,$ we show that $ϕ$ and $ψ$ are approximately unitarily equivalent if and only if [ϕ]=[ψ] in KL(C,A) τ\circ ϕ=τ\circ ψfor all tracial states of A and ϕ^‡=ψ^‡, here ϕ^‡ and ψ^‡ are homomorphisms from $U(C)/CU(C)\to U(A)/CU(A) induced by ϕand ψ, respectively, and where CU(C) and CU(A) are closures of the subgroup generated by commutators of the unitary groups of C and B.
Let $G$ be either a profinite or a connected compact group, and $Γ, Λ$ be finitely generated dense subgroups. Assuming that the left translation action of $Γ$ on $G$ is strongly ergodic, we prove that any cocycle for the left-right translation action of $Γ\timesΛ$ on $G$ with values in a countable group is virtually cohomologous to a group homomorphism. Moreover, we prove that the same holds if $G$ is a (not necessarily compact) connected simple Lie group provided that $Λ$ contains an infinite cyclic subgroup with compact closure. We derive several applications to OE - and W$^*$- superrigidity…
Let E be an operator algebra on a Hilbert space with finite-dimensional generated C*-algebra. A classification is given of the locally finite algebras and the operator algebras obtained as limits of direct sums of matrix algebras over E with respect to star-extendible homomorphisms. The invariants in the algebraic case consist of an additive semigroup, with scale, which is a right module for the semiring $V_E = Hom_u(E \otimes \sK, E \otimes \sK)$ of unitary equivalence classes of star-extendible homomorphisms. This semigroup is referred to as the dimension module invariant. In the operator al…
Given a C$^*$-dynamical system $(A, G, α)$ one defines a homomorphism, called the Chern-Connes character, that take an element in $K_0(A) \oplus K_1(A)$, the K-theory groups of the C$^*$-algebra $A$, and maps it into $H_{\mathbb{R}}^*(G)$, the real deRham cohomology ring of $G$. We explictly compute this homomorphism for the examples $(\overline{Ψ_{cl}^0(S^1)}, S^1, α)$ and $(\overline{Ψ_{cl}^0(S^2)}, SO(3), α)$, where $\overline{Ψ_{cl}^0(M)}$ denotes the C$^*$-algebra generated by the classical pseudodifferential operators of zero order in the manifold $M$ and $α$ the action of conjugation by…
