Let $A$ be a separable $C^*$-algebra and let $B$ be a stable $C^*$-algebra with a strictly positive element. We consider the (semi)group $\Ext^{as}(A,B)$ (resp. $\Ext(A,B)$) of homotopy classes of asymptotic (resp. of genuine) homomorphisms from $A$ to the corona algebra $M(B)/B$ and the natural map $i:\Ext(A,B)\ar\Ext^{as}(A,B)$. We show that if $A$ is a suspension then $\Ext^{as}(A,B)$ coincides with $E$-theory of Connes and Higson and the map $i$ is surjective. In particular any asymptotic homomorphism from $SA$ to $M(B)/B$ is homotopic to some genuine homomorphism.
Let A and B be $C^*$-algebras, A separable, and B $σ$-unital and stable. It is shown that there are natural isomorphisms $E(A,B)=KK(SA,Q(B))=[SA,Q(B)\otimes K]$, where $SA=C_0(0,1)\otimes A$, $[\cdot,\cdot]$ denotes the set of homotopy classes of *-homomorphisms, $Q(B) = M(B)/B$ is the generalized Calkin algebra and K denotes the $C^*$-algebra of compact operators.
We prove that for matrix algebras $M_n$ there exists a monomorphism $(\prod_n M_n/\oplus_n M_n)\otimes C(S^1) \to {\cal Q} $ into the Calkin algebra which induces an isomorphism of the $K_1$-groups. As a consequence we show that every vector bundle over a classifying space $Bπ$ which can be obtained from an asymptotic representation of a discrete group $π$ can be obtained also from a representation of the group $π\times Z$ into the Calkin algebra. We give also a generalization of the notion of Fredholm representation and show that asymptotic representations can be viewed as asymptotic Fredholm…
Let $A$, $B$ be C*-algebras; $A$ separable, $B$ $σ$-unital and stable. We introduce a notion of translation invariance for asymptotic homomorphisms from $SA=C_0(\mathbb R)\otimes A$ to $B$ and show that the Connes-Higson construction applied to any extension of $A$ by $B$ is homotopic to a translation invariant asymptotic homomorphism. In the other direction we give a construction which produces extensions of $A$ by $B$ out of such a translation invariant asymptotic homomorphism. This leads to our main result; that the homotopy classes of extensions coincide with the homotopy classes of transl…
We study the $C^*$-algebras related to Mishchenko's version of asymptotic homomorphisms. In particular we show that their different versions are weakly homotopy equivalent but not isomorphic to each other. We give also the continuous version for these algebras.
We consider the semigroup $Ext(A,B)$ of extensions of a separable C*-algebra $A$ by a stable C*-algebra $B$ modulo unitary equivalence and modulo asymptotically split extensions. This semigroup contains the group $Ext^{-1/2}(A,B)$ of invertible elements (i.e. of semi-invertible extensions). We show that the functor $Ext^{1/2}(A,B)$ is homotopy invariant and that it coincides with the functor of homotopy classes of asymptotic homomorphisms from $C(\mathbb T)\otimes A$ to $M(B)$ that map $SA\subseteq C(\mathbb T)\otimes A$ into $B$.
We provide a direct and elementary proof of the equivalence between the weak asymptotic homomorphism property for the pair of group von Neumann algebras $L(H)\subset L(G)$ and the embedding into $H$ of the one sided quasi-normalizer of the pair $H<G$, as it is stated by J. Fang, M. Gao and R. R. Smith in a recent article, and we extend the result to triples of groups $H<K<G$.
Let $A$, $B$ be separable C*-algebras, $B$ stable. Elements of the E-theory group $E(A,B)$ are represented by asymptotic homomorphisms from the second suspension of $A$ to $B$. Our aim is to represent these elements by (families of) maps from $A$ itself to $B$. We have to pay for that by allowing these maps to be even further from $*$-homomorphisms. We prove that $E(A,B)$ can be represented by pairs $(φ^+,φ^-)$ of maps from $A$ to $B$ that are not necessarily asymptotic homomorphisms, but have the same deficiency from being ones. Not surprisingly, such pairs of maps can be viewed as pairs of a…
The algebra $Ψ(M)$ of order zero pseudodifferential operators on a compact manifold $M$ defines a well-known $C^*$-extension of the algebra $C(S^*M)$ of continuous functions on the cospherical bundle $S^*M\subset T^*M$ by the algebra $\K$ of compact operators. In his proof of the index theorem, Higson defined and used an asymptotic homomorphism $T$ from $C_0(T^*M)$ to $\K$, which plays the role of a deformation for the commutative algebra $C_0(T^*M)$. Similar constructions exist also for operators and symbols with coefficients in a $C^*$-algebra. We show that the image of the above extension u…
We show that the E-theory of Connes and Higson can be formulated in terms of C*-extensions in a way quite similar to the way in which the KK-theory of Kasparov can. The essential difference is that the role played by split extensions should be taken by asymptotically split extensions. We call an extension of a C*-algebra $A$ by a stable C*-algebra $B$ asymptotically split if there exists an asymptotic homomorphism consisting of right inverses for the quotient map. An extension is called semi-invertible if it can be made asymptotically split by adding another extension to it. Our main result is…
A triple of finite von Neumann algebras $B\subseteq N\subseteq M$ is said to have the relative weak asymptotic homomorphism property if there exists a net of unitary operators $\{u_λ\}_{λ\in Λ}$ in $B$ such that $$\lim_λ|\mathbb{E}}_B(xu_λy)-{\mathbb{E}}_B({\mathbb{E}}_N(x)u_λ{\mathbb{E}}_N(y))\|_2=0$$ for all $x,y\in M$. We prove that a triple of finite von Neumann algebras $B\subseteq N\subseteq M$ has the relative weak asymptotic homomorphism property if and only if $N$ contains the set of all $x\in M$ such that $Bx\subseteq \sum_{i=1}^n x_iB$ for a finite number of elements $x_1,...,x_n$ i…
Let $A$ be a separable $C^*$-algebra and $B$ a stable $C^*$-algebra containing a strictly positive element. We show that the group $\Ext(SA,B)$ of unitary equivalence classes of extensions of $SA$ by $B$, modulo the extensions which are asymptotically split, coincides with the group of homotopy classes of such extensions. This is done by proving that the Connes-Higson construction gives rise to an isomorphism between $\Ext(SA,B)$ and the $E$-theory group $E(A,B)$ of homotopy classes of asymptotic homomorphisms from $S^2A$ to $B$.
Let $\Dh$ and $A$ be unital and separable $C^{*}$-algebras; let $\Dh$ be strongly self-absorbing. It is known that any two unital $^*$-homomorphisms from $\Dh$ to $A \otimes \Dh$ are approximately unitarily equivalent. We show that, if $\Dh$ is also $K_{1}$-injective, they are even asymptotically unitarily equivalent. This in particular implies that any unital endomorphism of $\Dh$ is asymptotically inner. Moreover, the space of automorphisms of $\Dh$ is compactly-contractible (in the point-norm topology) in the sense that for any compact Hausdorff space $X$, the set of homotopy classes $[X,\A…
Let $A$ be a separable $C^*$-algebra. We prove that its stabilized second suspension $S^2A\otimes \mathcal K$ and the $C^*$-algebra $qA\otimes \mathcal K$ constructed by Cuntz in the framework of his picture of KK-theory are asymptotically equivalent. This means that there exist asymptotic morphisms from each to the other whose compositions are homotopic to the identity maps. This result yields an easy description of the natural transformation from KK-theory to E-theory. One more corollary is the following. T. Loring ([3]) proved that any asymptotic morphism from $\qC$ to any $C^*$-algebra $B$…
Let $C=C(X)$ be the unital $C^*$-algebra of all continuous functions on a finite CW complex $X$ and let $A$ be a unital simple $C^*$-algebra with tracial rank at most one. We show that two unital monomorphisms $ϕ, ψ: C\to A$ are asymptotically unitarily equivalent, i.e., there exists a continuous path of unitaries $\{u_t: t\in [0,1)\}\subset A$ such that $$ \lim_{t\to 1} u_t^*ϕ(f)u_t=ψ(f) {\rm for all} \in C(X), $$ if and only if \beq [ϕ]&=&[ψ] {\rm in} KK(C, A), τ\circ ϕ&=&τ\circ ψ{\rm for all} τ\in T(A), and ϕ^†&=&ψ^†, \eneq where $T(A)$ is the simplex of tracial states of $A$ and $ϕ^†, ψ^†:…
Let $A$ be a maximal abelian subalgebra (MASA) in a \II1 factor $M$. Sorin Popa introduced an analytic condition that can be used to identify the normalizing algebra of $A$ in $M$ and which we call \emph{the relative weak asymptotic homomorphism property}. In this paper we show this property is always satisfied by the normalizing algebra of $A$ in $M$ and as a consequence we obtain that $\bar{\bigotimes}_{i\in I}(\mathcal{N}_{M_{i}}(A_{i})^{\prime\prime})= (\mathcal{N}_{\bar{\bigotimes}_{i\in I}M_{i}}(\bar{\otimes}%_{i\in I} A_{i}))^{\prime\prime}$ .
Let $A$ be a graded C*-algebra. We characterize Kasparov's K-theory group $\hat{K}_0(A)$ in terms of graded *-homomorphisms by proving a general converse to the functional calculus theorem for self-adjoint regular operators on graded Hilbert modules. An application to the index theory of elliptic differential operators on smooth closed manifolds and asymptotic morphisms is discussed.
Let $A$, $A'$ be separable $C^*$-algebras, $B$ a stable $σ$-unital $C^*$-algebra. Our main result is the construction of the pairing $[[A',A]]\times\operatorname{Ext}^{-1/2}(A,B)\to\operatorname{Ext}^{-1/2}(A',B)$, where $[[A',A]]$ denotes the set of homotopy classes of asymptotic homomorphisms from $A'$ to $A$ and $\operatorname{Ext}^{-1/2}(A,B)$ is the group of semi-invertible extensions of $A$ by $B$. Assume that all extensions of $A$ by $B$ are semi-invertible. Then this pairing allows us to give a condition on $A'$ that provides semi-invertibility of all extensions of $A'$ by $B$. This ho…
