The purpose of this short note is to prove that if $A$ and $B$ are unital C*-algebras and $ϕ: A \to B$ is a unital *-preserving ring homomorphism, then $ϕ$ is contractive; i.e., $\| ϕ(a) \| \leq \| a \|$ for all $a \in A$. (Note that we do not assume $ϕ$ is linear.) We use this result to deduce a number of corollaries as well as characterize the form of such unital *-preserving ring homomorphisms. (This note may be of interest to C*-algebraists as well as algebraists who study noncommutative rings and algebras. It is meant to be accessible to a general mathematician and does not require any prior knowledge of C*-algebras.)

On Automatic Continuity of 3-Homomorphisms on Banach Algebras

A linear map $ϕ:{\mathcal A}\to {\mathcal B} $ between (Banach) algebras is called 3-homomorphism if $ϕ(abc)=ϕ(a)ϕ(b)ϕ(c)$ for each $a, b, c \in {\mathcal A}$. We investigate 3-homomorphisms on Banach algebras with bounded approximate identities and establish in two ways that every involution preserving homomorphism between $C^*$-algebras is norm decreasing.

Morita equivalence for graded rings

The classical Morita Theorem for rings established the equivalence of three statements, involving categorical equivalences, isomorphisms between corners of finite matrix rings, and bimodule homomorphisms. A fourth equivalent statement (established later) involves an isomorphism between infinite matrix rings. In our main result, we establish the equivalence of analogous statements involving graded categorical equivalences, graded isomorphisms between corners of finite matrix rings, graded bimodule homomorphisms, and graded isomorphisms between infinite matrix rings.

Some Automatic Continuity Theorems for Operator Algebras and Centralizers of Pedersen's Ideal

We prove automatic continuity theorems for "decomposable" or "local" linear transformations between certain natural subspaces of operator algebras. The transformations involved are not algebra homomorphisms but often are module homomorphisms. We show that all left (respectively quasi-) centralizers of the Pedersen ideal of a C*-algebra A are locally bounded if and only if A has no infinite dimensional elementary direct summand. It has previously been shown by Lazar and Taylor and Phillips that double centralizers of Pedersen's ideal are always locally bounded.

Coarse co-assembly as a ring homomorphism

The $K$-theory of the stable Higson corona of a coarse space carries a canonical ring structure. This ring is the domain of an unreduced version of the coarse co-assembly map of Emerson and Meyer. We show that the target also carries a ring structure and co-assembly is a ring homomorphism, provided that the given coarse space is contractible in a coarse sense.

Let $\mathcal A$ and $\mathcal B$ be two (complex) algebras. A linear map $ϕ:{\mathcal A}\to{\mathcal B}$ is called $n$-homomorphism if $ϕ(a_{1}... a_{n})=ϕ(a_{1})...ϕ(a_{n})$ for each $a_{1},...,a_{n}\in{\mathcal A}.$ In this paper, we investigate $n$-homomorphisms and their relation to homomorphisms. We characterize $n$-homomorphisms in terms of homomorphisms under certain conditions. Some results related to continuity and commutativity are given as well.

Isomorphism and Morita equivalence of graph algebras

For any countable graph $E$, we investigate the relationship between the Leavitt path algebra $L_{\C}(E)$ and the graph C*-algebra $C^*(E)$. For graphs $E$ and $F$, we examine ring homomorphisms, ring *-homomorphisms, algebra homomorphisms, and algebra *-homomorphisms between $L_{\C}(E)$ and $L_{\C}(F)$. We prove that in certain situations isomorphisms between $L_{\C}(E)$ and $L_{\C}(F)$ yield *-isomorphisms between the corresponding C*-algebras $C^*(E)$ and $C^*(F)$. Nonexistence of graded unital homomorphisms between Leavitt algebras and their Cuntz splices

Let $n\ge 2$, let $\mathcal{R}_n$ be the graph consisting of one vertex and $n$ loops and let $\mathcal{R}_{n^-}$ be its Cuntz splice. Let $L_n=L(\mathcal{R}_n)$ and $L_{n^-}=L(\mathcal{R}_{n^-})$ be the Leavitt path algebras over a unital ring $\ell$. Let $C_m$ be the cyclic group on $2\le m\le \infty$ elements. Equip $L_n$ and $L_{n^-}$ with their natural $C_m$-gradings. We show that under mild conditions on $\ell$, which are satisfied for example when $\ell$ is a field or a PID, there are no unital $C_m$-graded ring homomorphisms $L_n\to L_{n^-}$ nor in the opposite direction.

Almost flat K-theory of classifying spaces

We give a rigorous account and prove continuity properties for the correspondence between almost flat bundles on a triangularizable compact connected space and the quasi-representations of its fundamental group. For a discrete countable group $Γ$ with finite classifying space $BΓ$, we study a correspondence between between almost flat K-theory classes on $BΓ$ and group homomorphism $K_0(C^*(Γ))\to \mathbb{Z}$ that are implemented by pairs of discrete asymptotic homomorphisms from $C^*(Γ)$ to matrix algebras.

Homomorphisms of Fourier-Stieltjes algebras

Every homomorphism $φ: B(G) \rightarrow B(H)$ between Fourier-Stieltjes algebras on locally compact groups $G$ and $H$ is determined by a continuous mapping $α: Y \rightarrow Δ(B(G))$, where $Y$ is a set in the open coset ring of $H$ and $Δ(B(G))$ is the Gelfand spectrum of $B(G)$ (a $*$-semigroup).
