We present a level raising result for families of p-adic automorphic forms for a definite quaternion algebra D over the rational numbers. The main theorem is an analogue of a theorem for classical automorphic forms due to Diamond and Taylor. We show that certain families of forms old at a prime l intersect with families of l-new forms (at a non-classical point). One of the ingredients in the proof of Diamond and Taylor's theorem (which also played a role in earlier work of Taylor) is the definition of a suitable pairing on the space of automorphic forms. In our situation one cannot define such a pairing on the infinite dimensional space of p-adic automorphic forms, so instead we introduce a space defined with respect to a dual coefficient system and work with a pairing between the usual forms and the dual space. A key ingredient is an analogue of Ihara's lemma which shows an interesting asymmetry between the usual and the dual spaces.
We show the existence of some non-classical cohomological p-adic automorphic eigenforms for SL(2) using endoscopy and the geometry of eigenvarieties. These forms seem to account for some non-automorphic members of classical global L-packets.
Let $E$ be a CM number field and $F$ its maximal real subfield. We prove a level-raising result for regular algebraic conjugate self-dual automorphic representations of $GL_n(\mathbb{A}_E)$. This generalizes previously known results of Thorne by removing certain hypotheses occurring in that work. In particular, the level-raising prime $p$ is allowed to be unramified as opposed to inert in $F$, the field $E/F$ is not assumed to be everywhere unramified, and the field $E$ is allowed to be a general CM field.
We construct a p-adic Eisenstein measure with values in the space of vector-weight p-adic automorphic forms on certain unitary groups. This measure allows us to p-adically interpolate special values of certain vector-weight C-infinity automorphic forms, including Eisenstein series, as their weights vary. We also explain how to extend our methods to the case of Siegel modular forms and how to recover Nicholas Katz's p-adic families of Eisenstein series for Hilbert modular forms.
The goal of this paper is to study certain p-adic differential operators on automorphic forms on U(n,n). These operators are a generalization to the higher-dimensional, vector-valued situation of the p-adic differential operators constructed for Hilbert modular forms by N. Katz. They are a generalization to the p-adic case of the C^{\infty}-differential operators first studied by H. Maass and later studied extensively by M. Harris and G. Shimura. The operators should be useful in the construction of certain p-adic L-functions attached to p-adic families of automorphic forms on the unitary grou…
We describe an algorithm for computing certain quaternionic quotients of the Bruhat-Tits tree for GL2(Qp). As an application, we describe an algorithm to obtain (conjectural) equations for the canonical embedding of Shimura curves.
Let F be a number field, p a prime number. We construct the (multi-variable) p-adic L-function of an automorphic representation of $GL_2(A_F)$ (with certain conditions at places above p and $\infty$), which interpolates the complex L-function at the central critical point. We use this construction to prove that the p-adic L-function of a modular elliptic curve E over F has vanishing order greater or equal to the number of primes above p at which E has split multiplicative reduction, as predicted by the exceptional zero conjecture. This is a generalization of analogous results by Spieß (arXiv:1…
We develop a theory of $p$-adic automorphic forms on unitary groups that allows $p$-adic interpolation in families and holds for all primes $p$ that do not ramify in the reflex field $E$ of the associated unitary Shimura variety. If the ordinary locus is nonempty (a condition only met if $p$ splits completely in $E$), we recover Hida's theory of $p$-adic automorphic forms, which is defined over the ordinary locus. More generally, we work over the $μ$-ordinary locus, which is open and dense. By eliminating the splitting condition on $p$, our framework should allow many results employing Hida's …
We construct some $n$-dimensional eigenvarieties for finite slope overconvergent eigenforms over some unitary Shimura varieties with signature $(1,n-1)\times(0,n)\times\cdots\times(0,n)$ by adapting Andreatta-Iovita-Pilloni's method. We also show that there are some Galois pseudo-characters over our eigenvarieties by studying analytic continuation of finite slope eigenforms over these Shimura varieties.
In this article, we describe an efficient method for computing Teitelbaum's $p$-adic $\mathcal{L}$-invariant. These invariants are realized as the eigenvalues of the $\mathcal{L}$-operator acting on a space of harmonic cocycles on the Bruhat-Tits tree $\mathcal{T}$, which is computable by the methods of Franc and Masdeu described in [FM14]. The main difficulty in computing the $\mathcal{L}$-operator is the efficient computation of the $p$-adic Coleman integrals in its definition. To solve this problem, we use overconvergent methods, first developed by Darmon, Greenberg, Pollack and Stevens. In…
In the 1970's, Serre exploited congruences between $q$-expansion coefficients of Eisenstein series to produce $p$-adic families of Eisenstein series and, in turn, $p$-adic zeta functions. Partly through integration with more recent machinery, including Katz's approach to $p$-adic differential operators, his strategy has influenced four decades of developments. Prior papers employing Katz's and Serre's ideas exploiting differential operators and congruences to produce families of automorphic forms rely crucially on $q$-expansions of automorphic forms. The overarching goal of the present paper i…
We formulate and prove certain vanishing theorems for p-adic automorphic forms on unitary groups of arbitrary signature. The p-adic q-expansion principle for p-adic modular forms on the Igusa tower says that if the coefficients of (sufficiently many of) the q-expansions of a p-adic modular form f are zero, then f vanishes everywhere on the Igusa tower. There is no p-adic q-expansion principle for unitary groups of arbitrary signature in the literature. By replacing q-expansions with Serre-Tate expansions (expansions in terms of Serre-Tate deformation coordinates) and replacing modular forms wi…
We construct extensions of the field of rational numbers with the Galois group G_2(F_p) by reducing p-adic representations attached to automorphic representations.
Let A be a modular elliptic curve over a totally real field F, and let E/F be a totally imaginary quadratic extension. In the event of exceptional zero phenomenon, we prove a formula for the derivative of the multivariable anticyclotomic p-adic L-function attached to (A,E), in terms of the Hasse-Weil L-function and certain p-adic periods attached to the respective automorphic forms. Our methods are based on a new construction of the anticyclotomic p-adic L-function by means of the corresponding automorphic representation.
We give a fully explicit description of Lie algebra derivatives (generalizing raising and lowering operators) for representations of SL(3,R) in terms of a basis of Wigner functions. This basis is natural from the point of view of principal series representations, as well as computations in the analytic theory of automorphic forms (e.g., with Whittaker functions). The method is based on the Clebsch-Gordan multiplication rule for Wigner functions, and applies to other Lie groups whose maximal compact subgroup is isogenous to a product of SU(2) and U(1) factors. As an application, we give a compl…
Let $K/Q$ be a real quadratic field. Given an automorphic representation $π$ for $GL_{2}/K$, let $As^{\pm}(π)$ denote the plus/minus Asai transfer of $π$ to an automorphic representation for $GL_{4}/Q$. In this paper, we construct a rigid analytic map from the universal eigenvariety of $GL_{2}/K$ to the universal eigenvariety of $GL_{4}/Q$, which at nice classical points interpolate this Asai transfer.
We give a new and representation theoretic construction of $p$-adic interpolation series for central values of self-dual Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions for $\operatorname{GL}_2$ in dihedral towers of CM fields, using expressions of these central values as automorphic periods. The main novelty of this construction, apart from the level of generality in which it works, is that it is completely local. We give the construction here for a cuspidal automorphic representation of $\operatorname{GL}_2$ over a totally real field corresponding to a $\mathfrak{p}$-ordinary Hilbert modular forms of parallel …
We study the theory of finite-order p-adic functions and distributions on ray class groups of number fields, and apply this to the construction of (possibly unbounded) p-adic L-functions for automorphic forms on GL(2) which may be non-ordinary at the primes above p. As a consequence, we obtain a "plus-minus" decomposition of the p-adic L-functions of automorphic forms for GL(2) over an imaginary quadratic field with p split and Hecke eigenvalues 0 at the primes above p, confirming a conjecture of B.D. Kim.
Let F be a totally real number field. Using a recent geometric approach developed by Andreatta and Iovita we construct several variables p-adic families of finite slope quaternionic automorphic forms over F. It is achieved by interpolating the modular sheaves defined over some auxiliary unitary Shimura curves. Secondly, we attach p-adic L-functions to triples of ordinary p-adic families of quaternionic automorphic eigenforms. This is done by relating trilinear periods to some trilinear products over unitary Shimura curves which can be interpolated adapting the work of Liu-Zhang-Zhang to our fa…
We use the "higher Hida theory" recently introduced by the second author to p-adically interpolate periods of non-holomorphic automorphic forms for GSp(4), contributing to coherent cohomology of Siegel threefolds in positive degrees. We apply this new method to construct p-adic L-functions associated to the degree 4 (spin) L-function of automorphic representations of GSp(4), and the degree 8 L-function of GSp(4) x GL(2).
The Fourier coefficients of the Siegel-Eisenstein series are p-adically continued for all primes p, as meromorphic functions, using the reciprocal of a product of L-functions. A construction of p-adic meromorphic families of such series is given in relation to the geometry of homogeneous spaces. Applications are given to p-adic L-functions, to Siegel's Mass Formula, to p-adic analytic families of automorphic representations. We study $p$-adic families of cohomological automorphic forms for ${\mathrm{GL}}(2)$ over imaginary quadratic fields and prove that families interpolating a Zariski-dense set of classical cuspidal automorphic forms only occur under very restrictive conditions. We show how to computationally determine when this is not the case and establish concrete examples of families interpolating only finitely many Bianchi modular forms.
This paper generalises previous work of the author to the setting of overconvergent $p$-adic automorphic forms for a definite quaternion algebra over a totally real field. We prove results which are analogues of classical `level raising' results in the theory of mod $p$ modular forms. Roughly speaking, we show that an overconvergent eigenform whose associated local Galois representation at some auxiliary prime $ł$ is (a twist of) a direct sum of trivial and cyclotomic characters lies in a family of eigenforms whose local Galois representation at $ł$ is generically (a twist of) a ramified exten…
We construct the compatible system of $l$-adic representations associated to a regular algebraic cuspidal automorphic representation of $GL_n$ over a CM (or totally real) field and check local-global compatibility for the $l$-adic representation away from $l$ and finite number of rational primes above which the CM field or the automorphic representation ramify. The main innovation is that we impose no self-duality hypothesis on the automorphic representation.
We generalise Pollack's construction of plus/minus L-functions to certain cuspidal automorphic representations of $\mathrm{GL}_{2n}$ using the $p$-adic $L$-functions constructed in forthcoming work of Barrera, Dimitrov and Williams.
I give an algorithm for computing the full space of automorphic forms for definite unitary groups over Q, and apply this to calculate the automorphic forms of level $G(Z-hat)$ and various small weights for an example of a rank 3 unitary group. This leads to some examples of various types of endoscopic lifting from automorphic forms for U_1 x U_1 x U_1 and U_1 x U_2, and to an example of a non-endoscopic form of weight (3,3) corresponding to a family of 3-dimensional irreducible l-adic Galois representations. I also compute the 2-adic slopes of some automorphic forms with level structure at 2, …
Let F be a number field with adele ring A_F, and πan isobaric, algebraic automorphic representation of GL_4(A_F) of a fixed archimedean weight, which is quasi-regular, meaning that at every archimedean place v of F, the 4-dimensional representation σ_v of the Weil group W_{F_v} attached to π_v is multiplicity free. Suppose there is an associated 4-dimensional, Hodge-Tate p-adic representation ρof the absolute Galois group G_F, whose local L-factors agree with those of π(up to a shift) at almost all primes P of F. Then our first result is that the semisimplification of ρdoes not contain any irr…
We construct p-adic L-functions associated with triples of finite slope p-adic families of quaternionic automorphic eigenforms over totally real fields on Shimura curves. These results generalize a previous construction, joint work with D.Barrera, performed in the ordinary setting.
Let $ρ$ be the $p$-adic Galois representation attached to a cuspidal, regular algebraic, polarizable automorphic representation of $GL_n$. Assuming only that $ρ$ satisfies an irreducibility condition, we prove the vanishing of the adjoint Bloch--Kato Selmer group attached to $ρ$. This generalizes previous work of the author and James Newton.
We prove a strong form of the trivial zero conjecture at the central point for the $p$-adic $L$-function of a non-critically refined self-dual cohomological cuspidal automorphic representation of $\mathrm{GL}_2$ over a totally real field, which is Iwahori spherical at places above $p$. In the case of a simple zero we adapt the approach of Greenberg and Stevens, based on the functional equation for the $p$-adic $L$-function of a nearly finite slope family and on improved $p$-adic $L$-functions that we construct using automorphic symbols and overconvergent cohomology. For higher order zeros we d…
We prove a commutative algebra result which has consequences for congruences between automorphic forms modulo prime powers. If C denotes the congruence module for a fixed automorphic Hecke eigenform π_0 we prove an exact relation between the p-adic valuation of the order of C and the sum of the exponents of p-power congruences between the Hecke eigenvalues of π_0 and other automorphic forms. We apply this result to several situations including the congruences described by Mazur's Eisenstein ideal.
Let $Π$ be a cuspidal automorphic representation of $\mathrm{GL}_{2n}(\mathbb{A_Q})$ and let $p$ be an odd prime at which $Π$ is unramified. In a recent work, Barrera, Dimitrov and Williams constructed possibly unbounded $p$-adic $L$-functions interpolating complex $L$-values of $Π$ in the non-ordinary case. Under certain assumptions, we construct two \textit{bounded} $p$-adic $L$-functions for $Π$, thus extending an earlier work of Rockwood by relaxing the Pollack condition. Using Langlands local-global compatibility, we define signed Selmer groups over the $p$-adic cyclotomic extension of $\…
We prove an unconditional power saving for the dimension of the space of cohomological automorphic forms of fixed level and growing weight on GL_2 over any number field which is not totally real. Our proof involves the theory of p-adically completed cohomology developed by Calegari and Emerton, and a bound for the growth of coinvariants in certain finitely generated non-commutative Iwasawa modules.
In earlier work, the first named author generalized the construction of Darmon-style $\mathcal{L}$-invariants to cuspidal automorphic representations of semisimple groups of higher rank, which are cohomological with respect to the trivial coefficient system and Steinberg at a fixed prime. In this paper, assuming that the Archimedean component of the group has discrete series we show that these automorphic $\mathcal{L}$-invariants can be computed in terms of derivatives of Hecke-eigenvalues in $p$-adic families. Our proof is novel even in the case of modular forms, which was established by Bert…
We give an expository account of the theory of intertwining operators for connected reductive $p$--adic groups, and their connection with automorphic $L$--functions. Our purpose is to illustrate the relation between harmonic analysis and arithmetic. In particular, we describe how the theory of Plancherel measures allows us to compute certain local Langlands $L$--functions. In order to be more self contained, we give a brief introduction to the Langlands program. The theory of $R$--groups and elliptic representations is treated here as well. Finally, we give an example which illustrates how the…
We describe an application of Poincaré duality for completed homology spaces (as defined by Emerton) to level raising for p-adic modular forms. This allows us to give a new description of the image of Chenevier's p-adic Jacquet-Langlands map between an eigencurve for a definite quaternion algebra and an eigencurve for GL(2). The points on the eigencurve at which we "raise the level" are (non-smooth) points of intersection between an "old" and a "new" component.
We consider a novel version of the classical Jacquet-Langlands {correspondence}, explore a $p$-adic extension of the Jacquet-Langlands correspondence, and as an explicit example we find an overconvergent automorphic form of weight~1 which corresponds to a classical modular form of weight~1, using both experimental and theoretical methods.
In this paper we prove a general theorem about congruences between automorphic forms on a reductive group G which is compact at infinity modulo the center. If the rank is one, this essentially reduces to Ribet's level-raising theorem. We then specialize to the higher rank case where G is an inner form of GSp(4). Here we get congruences with automorphic forms having a generic local component. In particular, a Saito-Kurokawa form is congruent to a form which is not of Saito-Kurokawa type. We get similar results for U(3) at split primes.
These are the expanded notes of a mini-course of four lectures by the same title given in the workshop "p-adic aspects of modular forms" held at IISER Pune, in June, 2014. We give a brief introduction of p-adic L-functions attached to certain types of automorphic forms on GL(n) with the specific aim of understanding the p-adic symmetric cube L-function attached to a cusp form on GL(2) over rational numbers.
We study indefinite quaternion algebras over totally real fields F, and give an example of a cohomological construction of p-adic Jacquet-Langlands functoriality using completed cohomology. We also study the (tame) levels of p-adic automorphic forms on these quaternion algebras and give an analogue of Mazur's `level lowering' principle.
This paper has two main parts. First, we construct certain differential operators, which generalize operators studied by G. Shimura. Then, as an application of some of these differential operators, we construct certain p-adic families of automorphic forms. Building on the author's earlier work, these differential operators map automorphic forms on a unitary group of signature (n,n) to (vector-valued) automorphic forms on the product $U^φ\times U^{-φ}$ of two unitary groups, where $U^φ$ denotes the unitary group associated to a Hermitian form $φ$ of arbitrary signature on an n-dimensional vecto…
Let $L$ be a finite extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$ and $n\geq 2$. We associate to a crystabelline $n$-dimensional representation of $\mathrm{Gal}(\overline L/L)$ satisfying mild genericity assumptions a finite length locally $\mathbb{Q}_p$-analytic representation of $\mathrm{GL}_n(L)$. In the crystalline case and in a global context, using the recent results on the locally analytic socle from [BHS17a] we prove that this representation indeed occurs in spaces of $p$-adic automorphic forms. We then use this latter result in the ordinary case to show that certain "ordinary" $p$-adic Banach space rep…
Let G be a reductive algebraic group over a number field k. It is shown how Emerton's methods may be applied to the problem of p-adically interpolating the metaplectic forms on G, i.e. the automorphic forms on metaplectic covers of G, as long as the metaplectic covers involved split at the infinite places of k.
In order to compute with $l$--adic sheaves or crystals on a line over $\mathbb{F} _q$ a low-technology alternative to the traditional computation with the Hecke operators on the automorphic side could be helpful. A program which has evolved over the years in our discussions with M. Kontsevich centers around the concept that, in the geometric case, there must exist certain multiplication laws on the Galois--representation side that could be thought of as precursors of the automorphic lifts: non-abelian Abel's theorems, and their restrictions to diagonal, Clausen identities. To a varying extent,…
We present an algorithm to determine if the $L$-series associated to an automorphic representation and the one associated to an elliptic curve over an imaginary quadratic field agree. By the work of Harris-Soudry-Taylor, Taylor and Berger-Harcos (cf. \cite{harris-taylor}, \cite{taylorII} and \cite{berger-harcos}) we can associate to an automorphic representation a family of compatible $p$-adic representations. Our algorithm is based on Faltings-Serre's method to prove that $p$-adic Galois representations are isomorphic.
We use a method of Buzzard to study p-adic families of different types of modular forms - classical, over imaginary quadratic fields and totally real fields. In the case of totally real fields of even degree, we get local constancy of dimensions of spaces of fixed slope and varying weight. For imaginary quadratic fields we obtain bounds independent of the weight on the dimensions of such spaces.
Let pi be a regular, algebraic, essentially self-dual cuspidal automorphic representation of GL_n(A_F), where F is a totally real field and n is at most 5. We show that for all primes l, the l-adic Galois representations associated to pi are irreducible, and for all but finitely many primes l, the mod l Galois representations associated to pi are also irreducible. We also show that the Lie algebras of the Zariski closures of the l-adic representations are independent of l.
In this paper, we extend the endoscopic transfer of definite unitary group U(n), which sends a pair of automorphic forms of U(m),U(n) to an automorphic form of U(m+n), to finite slope p-adic automorphic forms for definite unitary groups by constructing a rigid analytic map between eigenvarieties E_m \times E_n \to E_{m+n}, which at classical points interpolates endoscopic transfer map.
