We produce infinite families of exotic actions of finite cyclic groups on simply connected smooth 4-manifolds with nontrivial Seiberg-Witten invariants.
In a recent paper, Park constructs certain exotic simply-connected four-manifolds with small Euler characteristics. Our aim here is to prove that the four-manifolds in his constructions are minimal.
In this article, we construct the first example of a simply connected minimal symplectic 4-manifold homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic to 3CP^2#7CP^2b. We also construct the first exotic symplectic structure on CP^2#5CP^2b.
We study the set $\widehat{\mathcal S}_M$ of framed smoothly slice links which lie on the boundary of the complement of a 1-handlebody in a closed, simply connected, smooth 4-manifold $M$. We show that $\widehat{\mathcal S}_M$ is well-defined and describe how it relates to exotic phenomena in dimension four. In particular, in the case when $X$ is smooth, with a handle decompositions with no 1-handles and homeomorphic to but not smoothly embeddable in $D^4$, our results tell us that $X$ is exotic if and only if there is a link $L\hookrightarrow S^3$ which is smoothly slice in $X$, but not in $D…
In this article, we construct infinitley many simply connected, nonsymplectic and pairwise nondiffeomorphic 4-manifolds starting from E(n) and applying the sequence of knot surgery, ordinary blowups and rational blowdown. We also compute the Seiberg-Witten invariants of these manifolds.
Motivated by Stipsicz and Szabó's exotic 4-manifolds with b_2^+=3 and b_2^-=8, we construct a family of simply connected smooth 4-manifolds with b_2^+=3 and b_2^-=8. As a corollary, we conclude that the topological 4-manifold 3{CP}^2#8{-CP}^2 admits infinitely many distinct smooth structures.
We provide the first information on diffeotopy groups of exotic smoothings of R^4: For each of uncountably many smoothings, there are uncountably many isotopy classes of self-diffeomorphisms. We realize these by various explicit group actions. There are also actions at infinity by nonfinitely generated groups, for which no nontrivial element extends over the whole manifold. In contrast, every diffeomorphism of the end of the universal R^4 extends. Our techniques apply to many other open 4-manifolds, and are related to cork theory. We show that under broad hypotheses, cork twisting is equivalen…
We study the relationship between exotic R^4's and Stein surfaces as it applies to smoothing theory on more general open 4-manifolds. In particular, we construct the first known examples of large exotic R^4's that embed in Stein surfaces. This relies on an extension of Casson's Embedding Theorem for locating Casson handles in closed 4-manifolds. Under sufficiently nice conditions, we show that using these R^4's as end-summands produces uncountably many diffeomorphism types while maintaining independent control over the genus-rank function and the Taylor invariant.
This is primarily an exposition, combining work of several authors (Curtis, Hsiang, Freedman, Stong, Matveyev, and Bizaca), of the proof that a smooth 5-dimensional h-cobordism between simply connected 4-manifolds is a product off of a contractible piece which itself is diffeomorphic to the 5-ball.
We present a pair of smooth fiber bundles over the circle with a common $4$-dimensional fiber with the following properties: (1) their total spaces are diffeomorphic to each other; (2) they are isomorphic to each other as topological fiber bundles; (3) they are not isomorphic to each other as smooth fiber bundles. In particular, we exhibit an example with non-simply-connected fiber.
We study the possibility of realizing exotic smooth structures on punctured simply connected $4$-manifolds as leaves of a codimension one foliation on a compact manifold. In particular, we show the existence of uncountably many smooth open $4$-manifolds which are not diffeomorphic to any leaf of a codimension one transversely $C^{2}$ foliation on a compact manifold. These examples include some exotic ${\mathbb R}^4$'s and exotic cylinders $S^3\times{\mathbb R}$.
We give several criteria on a closed, oriented 3-manifold that will imply that it is the boundary of a (simply connected) 4-manifold that admits infinitely many distinct smooth structures. We also show that any weakly fillable contact 3-manifold, or contact 3-manifolds with non-vanishing Heegaard Floer invariant, is the boundary of a simply connected 4-manifolds that admits infinitely many distinct smooth structures each of which supports a symplectic structure with concave boundary, that is there are infinitely many exotic caps for any such contact manifold.
Classical work of Lee, Schultz, and Stolz relates the smooth transformation groups of exotic spheres to the stable homotopy groups of spheres. In this note, we apply recent progress on the latter to produce smooth circle and cyclic group actions on certain exotic spheres.
We show how to construct absolutely exotic smooth structures on compact 4-manifolds with boundary, including contractible manifolds. In particular, we prove that any compact smooth 4-manifold W with boundary that admits a relatively exotic structure contains a pair of codimension-zero submanifolds homotopy equivalent to W that are absolutely exotic copies of each other. In this context, {\em absolute} means that the exotic structure is not relative to a particular parameterization of the boundary. Our examples are constructed by modifying a relatively exotic manifold by adding an invertible ho…
In a small simply-connected closed 4-manifold, we construct infinitely many pairs of exotic codimension-$1$ submanifolds with diffeomorphic complements that remain exotic after any number of stabilizations by $ S^2 \times S^2$. We also give new constructions of exotic embeddings of 3-spheres in 4-manifolds with diffeomorphic complements.
Let M be either CP^2#3CP^2bar or 3CP^2#5CP^2bar. We construct the first example of a simply-connected symplectic 4-manifold that is homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic to M.
It is well known that for any exotic pair of simply connected closed oriented 4-manifolds, one is obtained from the other by twisting a compact contractible submanifold via an involution on the boundary. By contrast, here we show that for each positive integer $n$, there exists a simply connected closed oriented 4-manifold $X$ such that, for any compact (not necessarily connected) codimension zero submanifold $W$ with $b_1(\partial W)<n$, the set of all smooth structures on $X$ cannot be generated from $X$ by twisting $W$ and varying the gluing map. As a corollary, we show that there exists no…
We show examples of pairs of smooth, compact, homeomorphic 4-manifolds, whose diffeomorphism types are distinguished by the topology of the singular sets of smooth stable maps defined on them. In this distinction we rely on results from Seiberg-Witten theory.
We consider simply-connected $4$-manifolds admitting Lefschetz fibrations over the $2$-sphere. We explicitly construct nonhyperelliptic and hyperelliptic Lefschetz fibrations of genus $4$ on simply-connected $4$-manifolds which are exotic symplectic $4$-manifolds in the homeomorphism classes of $\mathbb{C}P^{2}\#8\overline{\mathbb{C} P^{2}}$ and $\mathbb{C} P^{2}\#9\overline{\mathbb{C} P^{2}}$, respectively. From these, we provide upper bounds for the minimal number of singular fibers of such fibrations. In addition, we prove that this number is equal to $18$ for $g=3$ when such fibrations are…
It is known that the only Stein filling of the standard contact structure on S^3 is B^4. In this paper, we construct simply connected exotic compact Stein 4-manifold pairs for any Betti number $b_2 \geq 1$; we do this by enlarging corks and plugs.
Motivated by a construction of Fintushel and Stern, we show that the topological 4--manifold $CP^2#5{\bar CP^2}$ supports infinitely many distinct smooth structures.
We construct series of examples of exotic smooth structures on compact locally symmetric spaces of noncompact type. In particular, we obtain higher rank examples, which do not support Riemannian metric of nonpositive curvature. The examples are obtained by taking the connected sum with an exotic sphere. To detect the change of the smooth structure we use a tangential map from the locally symmetric space its dual compact type twin.
We study finite group actions on smooth manifolds of the form $M\#Σ$, where $Σ$ is an exotic $n$-sphere and $M$ is a closed aspherical space form. We give a classification result for free actions of finite groups on $M\#Σ$ when $M$ is 7-dimensional. We show that if $\mathbb Z/p\mathbb Z$ acts freely on $T^n\#Σ$, then $Σ$ is divisible by $p$ in the group of homotopy spheres. When $M$ is hyperbolic, we give examples $M\#Σ$ that admit no nontrivial smooth action of a finite group, even though Isom($M$) is arbitrarily large. Our proofs combine geometric and topological rigidity results with smooth…
In a recent paper of Akhmedov, Etnyre, Mark and Smith, it was shown that there exist infinitely many contact Seifert fibered 3-manifolds each of which admits infinitely many exotic (homeomorphic but pairwise non-diffeomorphic) simply-connected Stein fillings. Here we extend this result to a larger set of contact Seifert fibered 3-manifolds with many singular fibers and observe that these 3-manifolds are singularity links. In addition, we prove that the contact structures induced by the Stein fillings are the canonical contact structures on these singularity links. As a consequence, we verify a…
For every integer $k\geq 2$, we construct infinite families of mutually nondiffeomorphic irreducible smooth structures on the topological $4$-manifolds $(2k-1)(S^2\times S^2)$ and $(2k-1)(\CP#\CPb)$, the connected sums of $2k-1$ copies of $S^2\times S^2$ and $\CP#\CPb$.
Harer, Kas and Kirby have conjectured that every handle decomposition of the elliptic surface $E(1)_{2,3}$ requires both 1- and 3-handles. In this article, we construct a smooth 4-manifold which has the same Seiberg-Witten invariant as $E(1)_{2,3}$ and admits neither 1- nor 3-handles, by using rational blow-downs and Kirby calculus. Our manifold gives the first example of either a counterexample to the Harer-Kas-Kirby conjecture or a homeomorphic but non-diffeomorphic pair of simply connected closed smooth 4-manifolds with the same non-vanishing Seiberg-Witten invariants.
Let $M$ be $\CP#2\CPb$, $3\CP#4\CPb$ or $(2n-1)\CP#2n\CPb$ for any integer $n\geq 3$. We construct an irreducible symplectic 4-manifold homeomorphic to $M$ and also an infinite family of pairwise non-diffeomorphic irreducible non-symplectic 4-manifolds homeomorphic to $M$. We also construct such exotic smooth structures when $M$ is $\CP#4\CPb$ or $3\CP# k \CPb$ for $k=6,8,10$.
We show that there exist infinitely many simply connected compact Stein 4-manifolds with b_2=2 such that they are all homeomorhic but mutually non-diffeomorphic, and they are Stein fillings of the same contact 3-manifold on their boundaries. We also describe their handlebody pictures.
Wall-type stabilization problems investigate the collapse of exotic 4-dimensional phenomena under stabilization operations (e.g., taking connected sums with $S^2 \times S^2$). We propose an elementary approach to these problems, providing a construction of exotic 4-manifolds and knotted surfaces that are candidates to remain exotic after stabilization -- including examples in the setting of closed, simply connected 4-manifolds. As a proof of concept, we show this construction yields exotic surfaces in the 4-ball that remain exotic after (internal) stabilization, detected by the cobordism maps …
As an application of `reverse engineering' technique introduced by R. Fintushel, D. Park and R. Stern \cite{FPS}, we construct an infinite family of fake (2n+2l-1)CP^2#(2n+4l-1)(-CP^2)'s for all n \ge 0, l \ge 1.
A short survey of exotic smooth structutes on 4-manifolds is given with a special emphasis on the corresponding cork structures. Along the way we discuss some of the more recent results in this direction, obtained jointly with R.Matveyev, B.Ozbagci, C.Karakurt and K.Yasui.
We give two constructions of surfaces in simply-connected 4-manifolds with non simply-connected complements. One is an iteration of the twisted rim surgery introduced by the first author. We also construct, for any group G satisfying some simple conditions, a simply-connected symplectic manifold containing a symplectic surface whose complement has fundamental group G. In each case, we produce infinitely many smoothly inequivalent surfaces that are equivalent up to smooth s-cobordism and hence are topologically equivalent for good groups.
For 5 <= k <= 8 we show that the infinite family of exotic smooth structures on CP^2# k(-CP^2) can be achieved by 1/n - surgeries on a single embedded nullhomologous torus in a manifold R_k which is homeomorphic to CP^2# k(-CP^2).
We define a new 4-dimensional symplectic cut and paste operation which is analogous to Fintushel and Stern's rational blow-down. We use this operation to produce multiple constructions of symplectic smoothly exotic complex projective space blown-up eight times, seven times, and six times. We also show how this operation can be used in conjunction with knot surgery to construct an infinite family of minimal exotic smooth structures on the complex projective space blown-up seven times.

A theorem on the existence of the unique minimal topologic handle decomposition of differentiable simply connected five-dimensional manifolds is proved. For a decomposition of this sort, the number of handles of each index is given.
In this article we construct a new family of simply connected symplectic 4-manifolds with $b_2^+ =1$ and $c_1^2 =2$ which are not diffeomorphic to rational surfaces by using rational blow-down technique. As a corollary, we conclude that a rational surface ${\mathbf CP}^2 \sharp 7{\bar{\mathbf CP}^2}$ admits an exotic smooth structure.
We show that any simply connected topological closed $4$-manifold punctured along any compact, totally disconnected tame subset $Λ$ admits a continuum of smoothings which are not diffeomorphic to any leaf of a $C^{1,0}$ codimension one foliation on a compact manifold. This includes the remarkable case of $S^4$ punctured along a tame Cantor set. This is the lowest reasonable regularity for this realization problem. These results come from a new criterion for nonleaves in $C^{1,0}$ regularity. We also include a new criterion for nonleaves in the $C^2$-category. Some of our smooth nonleaves are "…
Smooth and symplectic symmetries of an infinite family of distinct exotic $K3$ surfaces are studied, and comparison with the corresponding symmetries of the standard $K3$ is made. The action on the $K3$ lattice induced by a smooth finite group action is shown to be strongly restricted, and as a result, nonsmoothability of actions induced by a holomorphic automorphism of a prime order $\geq 7$ is proved and nonexistence of smooth actions by several $K3$ groups is established (included among which is the binary tetrahedral group $T_{24}$ which has the smallest order). Concerning symplectic symme…
Suppose that $X,X'$ are simply-connected closed exotic 4-manifolds. It is well-known that $X'$ is obtained by an order 2 cork twist of $X$. We give an infinite exotic family of 4-manifolds not generated by any infinite order cork. This is the first example admitting such a condition. We prove a necessary condition of 4-dimensional OS-invariants for a family to be generated by an infinite order cork and give non-contractible relatively exotic 4-manifolds that are never induced by any cork. Furthermore, we prove an estimate of the number of OS-invariants of 4-manifolds generated by a cork.
We discuss corks, and introduce new objects which we call plugs. Though plugs are fundamentally different objects, they also detect exotic smooth structures in 4-manifolds like corks. We discuss relation between corks, plugs and rational blow-downs. We show how to detect corks and plugs inside of some exotic manifolds. Furthermore, we construct knotted corks and plugs.
In this article, we shall investigate the relationship between the existence or non-existence of non-singular solutions to the normalized Ricci flow and smooth structures on closed 4-manifolds, where non-singular solutions to the normalized Ricci flow are solutions which exist for all time $t \in [0, \infty)$ with uniformly bounded sectional curvature. In dimension 4, there exist many compact topological manifolds admitting distinct smooth structures, i.e., exotic smooth structures. Interestingly, in this article, the difference between existence and non-existence of non-singular solutions to …
The main theorem of the paper shows that a smooth manifold which is homeomorphic to S^2xS^2 and has nonvanishing Ozsvath-Szabo invariant does not admit a perfect Morse function. I am withdrawing the paper because it is unclear to me if such a manifold exists.
