In this article, we shall investigate the relationship between the existence or non-existence of non-singular solutions to the normalized Ricci flow and smooth structures on closed 4-manifolds, where non-singular solutions to the normalized Ricci flow are solutions which exist for all time $t \in [0, \infty)$ with uniformly bounded sectional curvature. In dimension 4, there exist many compact topological manifolds admitting distinct smooth structures, i.e., exotic smooth structures. Interestingly, in this article, the difference between existence and non-existence of non-singular solutions to the normalized Ricci flow on 4-manifolds turns out to strictly depend on the choice of smooth structure. In fact, we shall prove that, for every natural number $\ell$, there exists a compact topological 4-manifold $X_{\ell}$ which admits smooth structures for which non-singular solutions of the normalized Ricci flow exist, but also admits smooth structures for which no non-singular solution of the normalized Ricci flow exists. Hence, in dimension 4, smooth structures become definite obstructions to the existence of non-singular solutions to the normalized Ricci flow.
In this paper we study non-singular solutions of Ricci flow on a closed manifold of dimension at least 4. Amongst others we prove that, if M is a closed 4-manifold on which the normalized Ricci flow exists for all time t>0 with uniformly bounded sectional curvature, then the Euler characteristic $χ(M)\ge 0$. Moreover, the 4-manifold satisfies one of the following \noindent (i) M is a shrinking Ricci solition; \noindent (ii) M admits a positive rank F-structure; \noindent (iii) the Hitchin-Thorpe type inequality holds 2χ(M)\ge 3|τ(M)| where $χ(M)$ (resp. $τ(M)$) is the Euler characteristic (res…
We find an obstruction to the existence of non-singular solutions to the normalized Ricci flow on four-manifolds with $b^+=1$. By using this obstruction, we study the relationship between the existence or non-existence of non-singular solutions of the normalized Ricci flow and exotic smooth structures on the topological 4-manifolds ${\mathbb C}{P}^2 # l \overline{{\mathbb C}{P}^2}$, where $5 \leq l \leq 8$.
A solution to the normalized Ricci flow is called non-singular if it exists for all time with uniformly bounded sectional curvature. By using the techniques developed by the present authors, we study the existence or non-existence of non-singular solutions of the normalized Ricci flow on 4-manifolds with non-trivial fundamental group and the relation with the smooth structures. For example, we prove that, for any finite cyclic group ${\mathbb Z}_{d}$, where $d>1$, there exists a compact topological 4-manifold $X$ with fundamental group ${\mathbb Z}_{d}$, which admits at least one smooth struct…
This paper studies normalized Ricci flow on a nonparabolic surface, whose scalar curvature is asymptotically -1 in an integral sense. By a method initiated by R. Hamilton, the flow is shown to converge to a metric of constant scalar curvature -1. A relative estimate of Green's function is proved as a tool.
The main result of this paper shows that, if $g(t)$ is a complete non-singular solution of the normalized Ricci flow on a noncompact 4-manifold $M$ of finite volume, then the Euler characteristic number $χ(M)\geq0$. Moreover, $χ(M)\neq 0$, there exist a sequence times $t_k\to\infty$, a double sequence of points $\{p_{k,l}\}_{l=1}^{N}$ and domains $\{U_{k,l}\}_{l=1}^{N}$ with $p_{k,l}\in U_{k,l}$ satisfying the followings: [(i)] $\dist_{g(t_k)}(p_{k,l_1},p_{k,l_2})\to\infty$ as $k\to\infty$, for any fixed $l_1\neq l_2$; [(ii)] for each $l$, $(U_{k,l},g(t_k),p_{k,l})$ converges in the $C_{loc}^\…
In this paper, we investigate the behavior of the normalized Ricci flow on asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds. We show that the normalized Ricci flow exists globally and converges to an Einstein metric when starting from a non-degenerate and sufficiently Ricci pinched metric. More importantly we use maximum principles to establish the regularity of conformal compactness along the normalized Ricci flow including that of the limit metric at time infinity. Therefore we are able to recover the existence results in \cite{GL} \cite{Lee} \cite{Bi} of conformally compact Einstein metrics with conform…
We show that the isoperimetric profile $h_{g(t)}(ξ)$ of a compact Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ is jointly continuous when metrics $g(t)$ vary continuously. We also show that, when $M$ is a compact surface and $g(t)$ evolves under normalized Ricci flow, $h^2_{g(t)}(ξ)$ is uniform Lipschitz continuous and hence $h_{g(t)}(ξ)$ is uniform locally Lipschitz continuous.
This paper studies the normalized Ricci flow from a slight perturbation of the hyperbolic metric on $\mathbb H^n$. It's proved that if the perturbation is small and decays sufficiently fast at the infinity, then the flow will converge exponentially fast to the hyperbolic metric when the dimension $n>5$.
We consider maximum solution $g(t)$, $t\in [0, +\infty)$, to the normalized Ricci flow. Among other things, we prove that, if $(M, ω) $ is a smooth compact symplectic 4-manifold such that $b_2^+(M)>1$ and let $g(t),t\in[0,\infty)$, be a solution to (1.3) on $M$ whose Ricci curvature satisfies that $|\text{Ric}(g(t))|\leq 3$ and additionally $χ(M)=3 τ(M)>0$, then there exists an $m\in \mathbb{N}$, and a sequence of points $\{x_{j,k}\in M\}$, $j=1, ..., m$, satisfying that, by passing to a subsequence, $$(M, g(t_{k}+t), x_{1,k},..., x_{m,k}) \stackrel{d_{GH}}\longrightarrow (\coprod_{j=1}^m N_j,…
We study topological structures of the sets $(0,1/2)^3 \cap Ω$ and $(0,1/2)^3 \setminus Ω$, where~$Ω$ is one special algebraic surface defined by a symmetric polynomial in variables $a_1,a_2,a_3$ of degree~$12$. These problems arise in studying of general properties of degenerate singular points of dynamical systems obtained from the normalized Ricci flow on generalized Wallach spaces. Our main goal is to prove the connectedness of $(0,1/2)^3 \cap Ω$ and to determine the number of connected components of $(0,1/2)^3 \setminus Ω$. Key words and phrases: Riemannian metric, generalized Wallach spa…
Let $(M^n,g_0)$ ($n$ odd) be a compact Riemannian manifold with $λ(g_0)>0$, where $λ(g_0)$ is the first eigenvalue of the operator $-4Δ_{g_0}+R(g_0)$, and $R(g_0)$ is the scalar curvature of $(M^n,g_0)$. Assume the maximal solution $g(t)$ to the normalized Ricci flow with initial data $(M^n,g_0)$ satisfies $|R(g(t))| \leq C$ and $\int_M |Rm(g(t))|^{n/2}dμ_t \leq C$ uniformly for a constant $C$. Then we show that the solution sub-converges to a shrinking Ricci soliton. Moreover, when $n=3$, the condition $\int_M |Rm(g(t))|^{n/2}dμ_t \leq C$ can be removed.
We prove a comparison theorem for the isoperimetric profiles of solutions of the normalized Ricci flow on the two-sphere: If the isoperimetric profile of the initial metric is greater than that of some positively curved axisymmetric metric, then the inequality remains true for the isoperimetric profiles of the evolved metrics. We apply this using the Rosenau solution as the model metric to deduce sharp time-dependent curvature bounds for arbitrary solutions of the normalized Ricci flow on the two-sphere. This gives a simple and direct proof of convergence to a constant curvature metric without…
In this article, we produce infinite families of 4-manifolds with positive first betti numbers and meeting certain conditions on their homotopy and smooth types so as to conclude the non-vanishing of the stable cohomotopy Seiberg-Witten invariants of their connected sums. Elementary building blocks used in the earlier work of Ishida and Sasahira are shown to be included in our general construction scheme as well. We then use these families to construct the first examples of families of closed smooth 4-manifolds for which Gromov's simplicial volume is nontrivial, Perelman's lambda-bar invariant…
Using the maximal regularity theory for quasilinear parabolic systems, we prove two stability results of complex hyperbolic space under the curvature-normalized Ricci flow in complex dimensions two and higher. The first result is on a closed manifold. The second result is on a complete noncompact manifold. To prove both results, we fully analyze the structure of the Lichnerowicz Laplacian on complex hyperbolic space. To prove the second result, we also define suitably weighted little Hölder spaces on a complete noncompact manifold and establish their interpolation properties.
We consider the volume-normalized Ricci flow close to compact shrinking Ricci solitons. We show that if a compact Ricci soliton $(M,g)$ is a local maximum of Perelman's shrinker entropy, any normalized Ricci flow starting close to it exists for all time and converges towards a Ricci soliton. If $g$ is not a local maximum of the shrinker entropy, we show that there exists a nontrivial normalized Ricci flow emerging from it. These theorems are analogues of results in the Ricci-flat and in the Einstein case.
In this paper, first we consider the existence and non-existence of Einstein metrics on the topological 4-manifolds $3\mathbb{CP}^2 # k \bar{\mathbb{CP}}^2$ (for $k \in {11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18}$) by using the idea of Răsdeaconu and Şuvaina (2009) and the constructions in Park, Park, and Shin (arXiv:0906.5195v2) and in Park, Park, and Shin (2009). Then, we study the existence or non-existence of non-singular solutions of the normalized Ricci flow on the exotic smooth structures of these topological manifolds by employing the obstruction developed in Ishida (2008).
We study the problem of convergence of the normalized Ricci flow evolving on a compact manifold $Ω$ without boundary. In \cite{KS10, KS15} we derived, via PDE techniques, global-in-time existence of the classical solution and pre-compactness of the orbit. In this work we show its convergence to steady-states, using a gradient inequality of Łojasiewicz type. We have thus an alternative proof of \cite{ha}, but for general manifold $Ω$ and not only for unit sphere. As a byproduct of that approach we also derive the rate of convergence according to this steady-sate being either degenerate or non-d…
We show that the scalar curvature is uniformly bounded for the normalized Kahler-Ricci flow on a Kahler manifold with semi-ample canonical bundle. In particular, the normalized Kahler-Ricci flow has long time existence if and only if the scalar curvature is uniformly bounded, for Kahler surfaces, projective manifolds of complex dimension three, and for projective manifolds of all dimensions if assuming the abundance conjecture.
This paper studies the normalized Ricci flow on surfaces with conical singularities. It's proved that the normalized Ricci flow has a solution for a short time for initial metrics with conical singularities. Moreover, the solution makes good geometric sense. For some simple surfaces of this kind, for example, the tear drop and the football, it's shown that they admit Ricci soliton metric.
We show for a non homogeneous boundary value problem for the Ricci flow on the disk that when the initial metric has positive curvature and the boundary is convex then the initial metric is deformed, via the normalized flow and along sequences of times, to a metric of constant curvature and totally geodesic boundary. We also show that when the geodesic curvature of the boundary is nonpositive and the metric is rotationally symmetric, the normalized version of the flow exists for all time.
We consider the normalized Ricci flow evolving from an initial metric which is conformally compactifiable and asymptotically hyperbolic. We show that there is a unique evolving metric which remains in this class, and that the flow exists up to the time where the norm of the Riemann tensor diverges. Restricting to initial metrics which belong to this class and are rotationally symmetric, we prove that if the sectional curvature in planes tangent to the orbits of symmetry is initially nonpositive, the flow starting from such an initial metric exists for all time. Moreover, if the sectional curva…
We consider some elementary aspects of the geometry of the space of probability measures endowed with Wasserstein distance. In such a setting, we discuss the various terms entering Perelman's shrinker entropy, and characterize two new monotonic functionals for the volume-normalized Ricci flow. One is obtained by a rescaling of the curvature term in the shrinker entropy. The second is associated with a gradient flow obtained by adding a curvature-drift to Perelman's backward heat equation. We show that the resulting Fokker-Planck PDE is the natural diffusion flow for probability measures absolu…
In this short paper, we prove a Hitchin-Thorpe type inequality for closed 4-manifolds with non-positive Yamabe invariant, and admitting long time solutions of the normalized Ricci flow equation with bounded scalar curvature.
We prove the following estimate for the spectrum of the normalized Laplace operator $Δ$ on a finite graph $G$, \begin{equation*}1- (1- k[t])^{\frac{1}{t}}\leq λ_1 \leq \cdots \leq λ_{N-1}\leq 1+ (1- k[t])^{\frac{1}{t}}, \,\forall \,\,\text{integers}\,\, t\geq 1. \end{equation*} Here $k[t]$ is a lower bound for the Ollivier-Ricci curvature on the neighborhood graph $G[t]$, which was introduced by Bauer-Jost. In particular, when $t=1$ this is Ollivier's estimates $k\leq λ_1\leq \ldots \leq λ_{N-1}\leq 2-k$. For sufficiently large $t$ we show that, unless $G$ is bipartite, our estimates for $λ_1$…
We investigate the scalar curvature behavior along the normalized conical Kähler-Ricci flow $ω_t$, which is the conic version of the normalized Kähler-Ricci flow, with finite maximal existence time $T<\infty $. We prove that the scalar curvature of $ω_t$ is bounded from above by $C/(T-t)^2$ under the existence of a contraction associated to the limiting cohomology class $[ω_T]$. This generalizes Z. Zhang's work to the conic case.
In this paper, we study the (normalized) Ricci flow on surfaces with conical singularities. Long time existence is proved for cone angle smaller than $2π$. In this case, convergence results are obtained if the Euler number is nonpositive.
The main purpose of this paper is to show that a normalized non-steady gradient Ricci soliton (M,g,f,λ) of dimension n is trivial if and only if its scalar curvature S satisfies the equality S=λ(f+(n/2)).
It is well known that the Kähler-Ricci flow on a Kähler manifold $X$ admits a long-time solution if and only if $X$ is a minimal model, i.e., the canonical line bundle $K_X$ is nef. The abundance conjecture in algebraic geometry predicts that $K_X$ must be semi-ample when $X$ is a projective minimal model. We prove that if $K_X$ is semi-ample, then the diameter is uniformly bounded for long-time solutions of the normalized Kähler-Ricci flow. Our diameter estimate combined with the scalar curvature estimate in [34] for long-time solutions of the Kähler-Ricci flow are natural extensions of Perel…
In this paper, we prove that the first eigenvalues of $-Δ+ cR$ ($c\geq \frac14$) is nondecreasing under the Ricci flow. We also prove the monotonicity under the normalized flow for the case $c=1/4$, and $r\le 0$.
Consider a Riemannian manifold $(M^{m}, g)$ whose volume is the same as the standard sphere $(S^{m}, g_{round})$. If $p>\frac{m}{2}$ and $\int_{M} \left\{ Rc-(m-1)g\right\}_{-}^{p} dv$ is sufficiently small, we show that the normalized Ricci flow initiated from $(M^{m}, g)$ will exist immortally and converge to the standard sphere. The choice of $p$ is optimal.
We study the behaviour of the normalized Kähler-Ricci flow on complete Kähler manifolds of negative holomorphic sectional curvature. We show that the flow exists for all time and converges to a Kähler-Einstein metric of negative scalar curvature, recovering a result of Wu and Yau.
We study some asymptotic behavior of the first nonzero eigenvalue of the Lalacian along the normalized Ricci flow and give a direct short proof for an asymptotic upper limit estimate.
On a smooth closed oriented 4-manifold $M$ with a smooth action by a finite group $G$, we show that a $G$-monopole class gives the $L^2$-estimate of the Ricci curvature of a $G$-invariant Riemannian metric, and derive a topological obstruction to the existence of a $G$-invariant nonsingular solution to the normalized Ricci flow on $M$. In particular, for certain $m$ and $n$, $m\Bbb CP_2 # n\bar{\Bbb CP}_2$ admits an infinite family of topologically equivalent but smoothly distinct non-free actions of $\Bbb Z_d$ such that it admits no nonsingular solution to the normalized Ricci flow for any in…
We consider the asymptotic behavior of the normalized Ricci flow on generalized Wallach spaces that could be considered as special planar dynamical systems. All non symmetric generalized Wallach spaces can be naturally parametrized by three positive numbers $a_1, a_2, a_3$. Our interest is to determine the type of singularity of all singular points of the normalized Ricci flow on all such spaces. Our main result gives a qualitative answer for almost all points $(a_1,a_2,a_3)$ in the cube $(0,1/2]\times (0,1/2]\times (0,1/2]$.
This is a revised version of our short note [arxiv.math.DG/0403065] where we discuss the monotonicity of the eigen-values of the Laplacian operator to the Ricci-Hamilton flow on a compact or a complete non-compact Riemannian manifold. We show that the eigenvalue of the Lapacian operator on a compact domain associated with the evolving Ricci flow is non-decreasing provided the scalar curvature having a non-negative lower bound and Einstein tensor being not too negative. This result will be useful in the study of blow-up models of the Ricci-Hamilton flow. We remark that using our idea, D.Kokotov…
In this paper, authors have established Chen's inequalities for the submanifolds of quaternionic Kaehler manifolds characterized by Ricci quarter-symmetric metric connection. Other than these inequalities, we have also derived generalized normalized Casorati curvature inequalities for the same submanifolds.
In this paper, we study the evolving behaviors of the first eigenvalue of Laplace-Beltrami operator under the normalized Ricci flow of model geometries. In every Bianchi class, we estimate the derivative of the eigenvalue. Then we construct monotonic quantities under the Ricci flow and obtain upper and lower bounds for the eigenvalue.
Let $X = M \times E$ where $M$ is an $m$-dimensional Kähler manifold with negative first Chern class and $E$ is an $n$-dimensional complex torus. We obtain $C^\infty$ convergence of the normalized Kähler-Ricci flow on $X$ to a Kähler-Einstein metric on $M$. This strengthens a convergence result of Song-Weinkove and confirms their conjecture.
We establish the existence of Kähler-Ricci flow on pseudoconvex domains with general initial metric without curvature bounds. Moreover we prove that this flow is simultaneously complete, and its normalized version converge to the complete Kähler-Einstein metric, which generalizes Topping's works on surfaces.
If a normalized Kähler-Ricci flow $g(t),t\in[0,\infty),$ on a compact Kähler $n$-manifold, $n\geq 3$, of positive first Chern class satisfies $g(t)\in 2πc_{1}(M)$ and has $L^{n}$ curvature operator uniformly bounded, then the curvature operator will also uniformly bounded along the flow. Consequently the flow will converge along a subsequence to a Kähler-Ricci soliton.
This paper is devoted to the study of the evolution of positively curved metrics on the Wallach spaces $SU(3)/T_{\max}$, $Sp(3)/Sp(1)\times Sp(1)\times Sp(1)$, and $F_4/Spin(8)$. We prove that for all Wallach spaces, the normalized Ricci flow evolves all generic invariant Riemannian metrics with positive sectional curvature into metrics with mixed sectional curvature. Moreover, we prove that for the spaces $Sp(3)/Sp(1)\times Sp(1)\times Sp(1)$ and $F_4/Spin(8)$, the normalized Ricci flow evolves all generic invariant Riemannian metrics with positive Ricci curvature into metrics with mixed Ricc…
Let $g(t)$, $t\in [0, +\infty)$, be a solution of the normalized Kähler-Ricci flow on a compact Kähler $n$-manifold $M$ with $c_{1}(M)>0$ and initial metric $g (0)\in 2πc_{1}(M)$. If there is a constant $C$ independent of $t$ such that $$ \int_{M}|Rm(g(t))|^{n}dv_{t}\leq C,$$ then, for any $t_{k}\to \infty$, a subsequence of $(M, g(t_{k}))$ converges to a compact orbifold $(X, h)$ with only finite many singular points $\{q_{j}\}$ in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense, where $h$ is a Kähler metric on $X\backslash \{q_{j}\}$ satisfying the Kähler-Ricci soliton equation, i.e. there is a smooth function $…
We give the global picture of the normalized Ricci flow on generalized flag manifolds with two or three isotropy summands. The normalized Ricci flow for these spaces descents to a parameter depending system of two or three ordinary differential equations, respectively. We present here the qualitative study of these system's global phase portrait, by using techniques of Dynamical Systems theory. This study allows us to draw conclusions about the existence and the analytical form of invariant Einstein metrics on such manifolds, and seems to offer a better insight to the classification problem of…
In this paper, we study the evolving behaviors of the first eigenvalue of Laplace-Beltrami operator under the normalized backward Ricci flow, construct various quantities which are monotonic under the backward Ricci flow and get upper and lower bounds. We prove that in cases where the backward Ricci flow converges to a sub-Riemannian geometry after a proper rescaling, the eigenvalue evolves toward zero.
In this paper, we prove that the $L^4$-norm of Ricci curvature is uniformly bounded along a Kähler-Ricci flow on any minimal algebraic manifold. As an application, we show that on any minimal algebraic manifold $M$ of general type and with dimension $n\le 3$, any solution of the normalized Kähler-Ricci flow converges to the unique singular Kähler-Einstein metric on the canonical model of $M$ in the Cheeger-Gromov topology.
In this paper, we consider Kahler-Ricci flow on n-dimensional Kahler manifold with semi-ample canonical line bundle and 0< m:= Kod(X)<n. Such manifolds admit a Calabi-Yau fibration over its canonical model. We prove that the scalar curvature of the Kahler metric along the normalized Kahler-Ricci flow converge to -m outside the singular set of this fibration.
In earlier work, carrying out numerical simulations of the Ricci flow of families of rotationally symmetric geometries on $S3$, we have found strong support for the contention that (at least in the rotationally symmetric case) the Ricci flow for a ``critical'' initial geometry - one which is at the transition point between initial geometries (on $S^3$) whose volume-normalized Ricci flows develop a singular neck pinch, and other initial geometries whose volume normalized Ricci flows converge to a round sphere - evolves into a ``degenerate neck pinch.'' That is, we have seen in this earlier work…
We prove a uniform diameter bound for long time solutions of the normalized Kahler-Ricci flow on an $n$-dimensional projective manifold $X$ with semi-ample canonical bundle under the assumption that the Ricci curvature is uniformly bounded for all time in a fixed domain containing a fibre of $X$ over its canonical model $X_{can}$. This assumption on the Ricci curvature always holds when the Kodaira dimension of $X$ is $n$, $n-1$ or when the general fibre of $X$ over its canonical model is a complex torus. In particular, the normalized Kahler-Ricci flow converges in Gromov-Hausdorff topolopy to…
We study the behavior of the normalized Ricci flow of invariant Riemannian homogeneous metrics at infinity for generalized Wallach spaces, generalized flag manifolds with four isotropy summands and second Betti number equal to one, and the Stiefel manifolds $V_2\mathbb{R}^n$ and $V_{1+k_2}\mathbb{R}^n$, with $n = 1+k_2+k_3$. We use techniques from the theory of differential equations, in particular the Poincaré compactification.
We show that the polyhomogeneity at infinity of an asymptotically complex hyperbolic metric is preserved along the Ricci-DeTurck flow. Moreover, if the initial metric is `smooth up to the boundary', this will be preserved by the Ricci-DeTurck flow and the normalized Ricci flow. When the initial metric is Kähler, sharper results are obtained in terms of a potential.
