We give two constructions of surfaces in simply-connected 4-manifolds with non simply-connected complements. One is an iteration of the twisted rim surgery introduced by the first author. We also construct, for any group G satisfying some simple conditions, a simply-connected symplectic manifold containing a symplectic surface whose complement has fundamental group G. In each case, we produce infinitely many smoothly inequivalent surfaces that are equivalent up to smooth s-cobordism and hence are topologically equivalent for good groups.
These notes are adapted from two talks given at the 2004 Clay Institute Summer School on Floer homology, gauge theory, and low dimensional topology at the Alfred Renyi Institute. We will quickly review what we do and do not know about the existence and uniqueness of smooth and symplectic structures on closed, simply-connected 4-manifolds. We will then list the techniques used to date and capture the key features common to all these techniques. We finish with some approachable questions that further explore the relationship between these techniques and whose answers may assist in future advance…
We produce infinite families of exotic actions of finite cyclic groups on simply connected smooth 4-manifolds with nontrivial Seiberg-Witten invariants.
This is primarily an exposition, combining work of several authors (Curtis, Hsiang, Freedman, Stong, Matveyev, and Bizaca), of the proof that a smooth 5-dimensional h-cobordism between simply connected 4-manifolds is a product off of a contractible piece which itself is diffeomorphic to the 5-ball.
We introduce a new technique that is used to show that the complex projective plane blown up at 6, 7, or 8 points has infinitely many distinct smooth structures. None of these smooth structures admit smoothly embedded spheres with self-intersection -1, i.e. they are minimal. In addition, none these smooth structures admit an underlying symplectic structure. Shortly after the appearance of a preliminary version of this article, Park, Stipsicz, and Szabo used the techniques described herein to show that the complex projective plane blown up at 5 points has infinitely many distinct smooth structu…
A theorem on the existence of the unique minimal topologic handle decomposition of differentiable simply connected five-dimensional manifolds is proved. For a decomposition of this sort, the number of handles of each index is given.
In this article we use the technique of Luttinger surgery to produce small examples of simply connected and non-simply connected minimal symplectic 4-manifolds. In particular, we construct: (1) An example of a minimal symplectic 4-manifold that is homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic to CP^2#3(-CP^2) which contains a symplectic surface of genus 2, trivial normal bundle, and simply connected complement and a disjoint nullhomologous Lagrangian torus with the fundamental group of the complement generated by one of the loops on the torus. (2) A minimal symplectic 4-manifold that is homeomorphic but …
We study the set $\widehat{\mathcal S}_M$ of framed smoothly slice links which lie on the boundary of the complement of a 1-handlebody in a closed, simply connected, smooth 4-manifold $M$. We show that $\widehat{\mathcal S}_M$ is well-defined and describe how it relates to exotic phenomena in dimension four. In particular, in the case when $X$ is smooth, with a handle decompositions with no 1-handles and homeomorphic to but not smoothly embeddable in $D^4$, our results tell us that $X$ is exotic if and only if there is a link $L\hookrightarrow S^3$ which is smoothly slice in $X$, but not in $D…
For 5 <= k <= 8 we show that the infinite family of exotic smooth structures on CP^2# k(-CP^2) can be achieved by 1/n - surgeries on a single embedded nullhomologous torus in a manifold R_k which is homeomorphic to CP^2# k(-CP^2).
In this article we construct a new family of simply connected symplectic 4-manifolds with $b_2^+ =1$ and $c_1^2 =2$ which are not diffeomorphic to rational surfaces by using rational blow-down technique. As a corollary, we conclude that a rational surface ${\mathbf CP}^2 \sharp 7{\bar{\mathbf CP}^2}$ admits an exotic smooth structure.
Given a compact manifold $N^n \subset \mathbb{R}^ν$, $s \ge 1$ and $1 \le p < \infty$, we prove that the class of smooth maps on the cube with values into $N^n$ is strongly dense in the fractional Sobolev space $W^{s, p}(Q^m; N^n)$ when $N^n$ is $\lfloor sp \rfloor$ simply connected. For $sp$ integer, we prove weak density of smooth maps with values into $N^n$ when $N^n$ is $sp - 1$ simply connected. The proofs are based on the existence of a retraction of $\mathbb{R}^ν$ onto $N^n$ except for a small subset of $N^n$ and on a pointwise estimate of fractional derivatives of composition of maps i…
Let M be either CP^2#3CP^2bar or 3CP^2#5CP^2bar. We construct the first example of a simply-connected symplectic 4-manifold that is homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic to M.

We prove that any closed simply-connected smooth 4-manifold is 16-fold branched covered by a product of an orientable surface with the 2-torus, where the construction is natural with respect to spin structures. In particular this solves Problem 4.113(C) in Kirby's list. We also discuss analogous results for other families of 4-manifolds with infinite fundamental groups.
In this note we study whether specific elements in the second homology of specific simply connected closed $4$-manifolds can be represented by smooth or topologically flat embedded spheres.
We give several criteria on a closed, oriented 3-manifold that will imply that it is the boundary of a (simply connected) 4-manifold that admits infinitely many distinct smooth structures. We also show that any weakly fillable contact 3-manifold, or contact 3-manifolds with non-vanishing Heegaard Floer invariant, is the boundary of a simply connected 4-manifolds that admits infinitely many distinct smooth structures each of which supports a symplectic structure with concave boundary, that is there are infinitely many exotic caps for any such contact manifold.
We construct a new family of simply connected minimal complex surfaces with $p_g=1$, $q=0$, and $K^2=8$ using a $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein smoothing theory.
We construct infinitely many smooth 4-manifolds which are homotopy equivalent to $S^2$ but do not admit a spine, i.e., a piecewise-linear embedding of $S^2$ which realizes the homotopy equivalence. This is the remaining case in the existence problem for codimension-2 spines in simply-connected manifolds. The obstruction comes from the Heegaard Floer $d$ invariants.
It is known that every compact Stein 4-manifolds can be embedded into a simply connected, minimal, closed, symplectic 4-manifold. By using this property, we discuss a new method of constructing corks. This method generates a large class of new corks including all the previously known ones. We prove that every one of these corks can knot infinitely many different ways in a closed smooth manifold, by showing that cork twisting along them gives different exotic smooth structures. We also give an example of infinitely many disjoint embeddings of a fixed cork into a non-compact 4-manifold which pro…
Here we discuss an example of topologically isotopic but smoothly non-isotopic pair of 2-spheres in a simply connected 4-manifold, which become smoothly isotopic after stabilizing by connected summing with S^2 x S^2.
Despite spectacular advances in defining invariants for simply connected smooth and symplectic 4-dimensional manifolds and the discovery of effective surgical techniques, we still have been unable to classify simply connected smooth manifolds up to diffeomorphism. In these notes, adapted from six lectures given at the 2006 Park City Mathematics Institute Graduate Summer School on Low Dimensional Topology, we will review what we do and do not know about the existence and uniqueness of smooth and symplectic structures on closed, simply connected 4-manifolds. We will focus on those surgical techn…
This paper provides a topological method to construct all simply-connected, spin, smooth $6$-manifolds with torsion-free homology using simply-connected, smooth $4$-manifolds as building blocks. We explicitly determine the invariants that classify these $6$-manifolds from the intersection form and specific homology classes of the $4$-manifold building blocks.
Some generalizations and variations of the Fintushel-Stern rim surgery are known to produce smoothly knotted surfaces. We show that if the fundamental groups of their complements are cyclic, then these surfaces are topologically unknotted. Using a twist-spinning construction from high-dimensional knot theory, we construct examples of knotted surfaces whose complements have cyclic fundamental groups.
We show that the Craighero-Gattazzo surface, the minimal resolution of an explicit complex quintic surface with four elliptic singularities, is simply-connected. This was conjectured by Dolgachev and Werner, who proved that its fundamental group has a trivial profinite completion. The Craighero-Gattazzo surface is the only explicit example of a smooth simply-connected complex surface of geometric genus zero with ample canonical class. We hope that our method will find other applications: to prove a topological fact about a complex surface we use an algebraic reduction mod p technique and defor…
We prove the existence of $(20-2K^2)$-dimensional families of simply-connected surfaces with ample canonical class, $p_g=1$, and $1 \leq K^2 \leq 9$, and we study the relation with configurations of rational curves in K3 surfaces via $\mathbb Q$-Gorenstein smoothings. Our surfaces with $K^2=7$ and $K^2=9$ are the first surfaces known in the literature, together with the existence of a $4$-dimensional family for $K^2=8$.
It is well known that for any exotic pair of simply connected closed oriented 4-manifolds, one is obtained from the other by twisting a compact contractible submanifold via an involution on the boundary. By contrast, here we show that for each positive integer $n$, there exists a simply connected closed oriented 4-manifold $X$ such that, for any compact (not necessarily connected) codimension zero submanifold $W$ with $b_1(\partial W)<n$, the set of all smooth structures on $X$ cannot be generated from $X$ by twisting $W$ and varying the gluing map. As a corollary, we show that there exists no…
In this paper, we study smooth, semi-free actions on closed, smooth, simply connected manifolds, such that the orbit space is a smoothable manifold. We show that the only simply connected $5$-manifolds admitting a smooth, semi-free circle action with fixed-point components of codimension $4$ are connected sums of $S^3$-bundles over $S^2$. Furthermore, the Betti numbers of the $5$-manifolds and of the quotient $4$-manifolds are related by a simple formula involving the number of fixed-point components. We also investigate semi-free $S^3$ actions on simply connected $8$-manifolds with quotient a…
In a recent paper, Park constructs certain exotic simply-connected four-manifolds with small Euler characteristics. Our aim here is to prove that the four-manifolds in his constructions are minimal.
As the sequel to [5, 7], we construct a simply connected minimal complex surface of general type with p_g = 0 and K^2 = 4 by using a rational blow-down surgery and Q-Gorenstein smoothing theory.
We construct uncountably many simply connected open 3-manifolds with genus one ends homeomorphic to the Cantor set. Each constructed manifold has the property that any self homeomorphism of the manifold (which necessarily extends to a homeomorphism of the ends) fixes the ends pointwise. These manifolds are complements of rigid generalized Bing-Whitehead (BW) Cantor sets. Previous examples of rigid Cantor sets with simply connected complement in $R^{3}$ had infinite genus and it was an open question as to whether finite genus examples existed. The examples here exhibit the minimum possible genu…
In this article, we construct infinitley many simply connected, nonsymplectic and pairwise nondiffeomorphic 4-manifolds starting from E(n) and applying the sequence of knot surgery, ordinary blowups and rational blowdown. We also compute the Seiberg-Witten invariants of these manifolds.
We construct examples of codimension two hyperbolic link complements in closed smooth 4-manifolds with homeomorphism type $\#_{2k}S^2 \times S^2$. All our examples are based on a construction of J. Ratcliffe and S. Tschantz, who constructed 1171 non-compact finite volume hyperbolic 4-manifolds of minimal volume. We then give necessary conditions for a closed smooth simply connected 4-manifold to contain a codimension two link complement that admits a hyperbolic structure.
It is an important question whether it is possible to put a geometry on a given manifold or not. It is well known that any simply connected closed manifold admitting a real projective structure must be a sphere. Therefore, any simply connected manifold $M$ which is not a sphere $(\dim M \geq 4)$ does not admit a real projective structure. Cooper and Goldman gave an example of a $3$-dimensional manifold not admitting a real projective structure and this is the first known example. In this article, by generalizing their work we construct a manifold $M^n$ with the infinite fundamental group $\mat…
We work in the smooth category. Let $N$ be a closed connected orientable 4-manifold with torsion free $H_1$, where $H_q := H_q(N; \mathbb Z)$. Our main result is a readily calculable classification of embeddings $N\to\mathbb R^7$ up to isotopy, with an indeterminancy. Such a classification was only known before for $H_1=0$ by our earlier work from 2008. Our classification is complete when $H_2=0$ or when the signature of $N$ is divisible neither by 64 nor by 9. The group of knots $S^4\to\mathbb R^7$ acts on the set of embeddings $N\to\mathbb R^7$ up to isotopy by embedded connected sum. In Par…
We give necessary and sufficient conditions for a closed smooth 6-manifold N to be diffeomorphic to a product of a surface F and a simply connected 4-manifold M in terms of basic invariants like the fundamental group and cohomological data. Any isometry of the intersection form of M is realized by a self-diffeomorphism of M x F.
Motivated by Stipsicz and Szabó's exotic 4-manifolds with b_2^+=3 and b_2^-=8, we construct a family of simply connected smooth 4-manifolds with b_2^+=3 and b_2^-=8. As a corollary, we conclude that the topological 4-manifold 3{CP}^2#8{-CP}^2 admits infinitely many distinct smooth structures.
We prove that for every natural number k there are simply connected topological four-manifolds which have at leat k distinct smooth structures supporting Einstein metrics, and also have infinitely many distinct smooth structures not supporting Einstein metrics. Moreover, all these smooth structures become diffeomorphic after connected sum with only one copy of the complex projective plane. We prove that manifolds with these properties cover a large geographical area.
This paper describes a way to subdivide a 3-manifold into angled blocks, namely polyhedral pieces that need not be simply connected. When the individual blocks carry dihedral angles that fit together in a consistent fashion, we prove that a manifold constructed from these blocks must be hyperbolic. The main application is a new proof of a classical, unpublished theorem of Bonahon and Siebenmann: that all arborescent links, except for three simple families of exceptions, have hyperbolic complements.
We show that for every sequence $(n_i)$, where each $n_i$ is either an integer greater than 1 or is $\infty$, there exists a simply connected open 3-manifold $M$ with a countable dense set of ends $\{e_i\}$ so that, for every $i$, the genus of end $e_i$ is equal to $n_i$. In addition, the genus of the ends not in the dense set is shown to be less than or equal to 2. These simply connected 3-manifolds are constructed as the complements of certain Cantor sets in $S^3$. The methods used require careful analysis of the genera of ends and new techniques for dealing with infinite genus.
Gonz{á}lez-Acu{ñ}a showed that Artin presentations characterize closed, orientable $3$-manifold groups. Winkelnkemper later discovered that each Artin presentation determines a smooth, compact, simply-connected $4$-manifold. We utilize triangle groups to find all Artin presentations on two generators that present the trivial group. We then determine all smooth, closed, simply-connected $4$-manifolds with second betti number at most two that appear in Artin presentation theory.
We will describe some results regarding the algorithmic nature of homeomorphism problems for manifolds; in particular, the following theorem. Theorem 1: Every PL or smooth simply connected manifold M^n of dimension n at least 5 can be recognized among simply connected manifolds. That is, there is an algorithm to decide whether or not another simply connected manifold is Top, PL or Diff isomorphic to M. Moreover, an analogous statement is true for embeddings in codimension at least three: one can algorithmically recognize any given embedding of one simply connected manifold in another up to iso…
We show that the set of even positive definite lattices that arise from smooth, simply-connected 4-manifolds bounded by a fixed homology 3-sphere can depend on more than the ranks of the lattices. We provide two homology 3-spheres with distinct sets of such lattices, each containing a distinct nonempty subset of the rank 24 Niemeier lattices.
In \cite{AP3, AHP}, the first author and his collaborators constructed the irreducible symplectic $4$-manifolds that are homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic to $(2n-1){\mathbb{CP}}^{2}\#(2n-1)\overline{\mathbb{CP}}^{2}$ for each integer $n \geq 25$, and the families of simply connected irreducible nonspin symplectic $4$-manifolds with positive signature that are interesting with respect to the symplectic geography problem. In this paper, we improve the main results in \cite{AP3, AHP}. In particular, we construct (i) an infinitely many irreducible symplectic and non-symplectic $4$-manifolds that…
Round handles are affiliated with smooth 4-manifolds in two major ways: 5-dimensional round handles appear extensively as the building blocks in cobordisms between 4-manifolds, whereas 4-dimensional round handles are the building blocks of broken Lefschetz fibrations on them. The purpose of this article is to shed more light on these interactions. We prove that if X and X' are cobordant closed smooth 4-manifolds with the same euler characteristics, and if one of them is simply-connected, then there is a cobordism between them which is composed of round 2-handles only, and therefore one can pas…
Our main result asserts that for any given numbers C and D the class of simply connected closed smooth manifolds of dimension m<7 which admit a Riemannian metric with sectional curvature bounded in absolute value by C and diameter uniformly bounded from above by D contains only finitely many diffeomorphism types. Thus in these dimensions the lower positive bound on volume in Cheeger's Finiteness Theorem can be replaced by a purely topological condition, simply-connectedness. In dimension 4 instead of simply-connectedness here only non-vanishing of the Euler characteristic has to be required. A…
