Let $k$ be a field of characteristic zero, let $G$ be a connected reductive algebraic group over $k$ and let $\mathfrak{g}$ be its Lie algebra. Let $k(G)$, respectively, $k(\mathfrak{g})$, be the field of $k$-rational functions on $G$, respectively, $\mathfrak{g}$. The conjugation action of $G$ on itself induces the adjoint action of $G$ on $\mathfrak{g}$. We investigate the question whether or not the field extensions $k(G)/k(G)^G$ and $k(\mathfrak{g})/k(\mathfrak{g})^G$ are purely transcendental. We show that the answer is the same for $k(G)/k(G)^G$ and $k(\mathfrak{g})/k(\mathfrak{g})^G$, and reduce the problem to the case where $G$ is simple. For simple groups we show that the answer is positive if $G$ is split of type ${\sf A}_{n}$ or ${\sf C}_n$, and negative for groups of other types, except possibly ${\sf G}_{2}$. A key ingredient in the proof of the negative result is a recent formula for the unramified Brauer group of a homogeneous space with connected stabilizers.
As a byproduct of our investigation we give an affirmative answer to a question of Grothendieck about the existence of a rational section of the categorical quotient morphism for the conjugating action of $G$ on itself. The results and methods of this paper have played an important part in recent A. Premet's negative solution (arxiv:0907.2500) of the Gelfand--Kirillov conjecture for finite-dimensional simple Lie algebras of every type, other than ${\sf A}_n$, ${\sf C}_n$, and ${\sf G}_2$.
We prove several basic extension theorems for reductive group schemes. We also prove that each Lie algebra with a perfect Killing form over a commutative $\dbZ$-algebra, is the Lie algebra of an adjoint group scheme.
For a reductive Lie algbera over an algbraically closed field of charasteristic zero,we consider a borel subgroup $B$ of its adjoint group, a Cartan subalgebra contained inthe Lie algebra of $B$ and the closure $X$ of its orbit under $B$ in the Grassmannian. The variety $X$ plays an important role in the study of the commuting variety. In thisnote, we prove that $X$ is Gorenstein with rational singularities.
We generalize results of P. Schneider and U. Stuhler for GL_l+1 to a reductive algebraic group G defined and split over a non-archimedean local field K. Following their lines, we prove that the generalized Steinberg representations of G with coefficients in any abelian group are cyclic. When G is semi-simple of adjoint type, we give an expression of these representations, whenever it is possible and in particular for those that are of maximal degree, in terms of the parahoric subgroups of G.
Let $\widehat{G}$ be a connected reductive group over an algebraically closed field with a pinning-preserving outer automorphism $σ$. Jantzen's twining character formula relates the trace of the action of $σ$ on a highest-weight representation $V_μ$ of $\widehat{G}$ to the character of a corresponding highest-weight representation $(V_σ)_μ$ of a related group $\widehat{G^{σ, \circ}}$. This paper extends the methods of Hong's geometric proof for the case $\widehat{G}$ is adjoint, to prove that the formula holds for all connected reductive groups, and examines the role of additional hypotheses. …
Let G be a split reductive group. We introduce the moduli problem of "bundle chains" parametrizing framed principal G-bundles on chains of lines. Any fan supported in a Weyl chamber determines a stability condition on bundle chains. Its moduli stack provides an equivariant toroidal compactification of G. All toric orbifolds may be thus obtained. Moreover, we get a canonical compactification of any semisimple G, which agrees with the wonderful compactification in the adjoint case, but which in other cases is an orbifold. Finally, we describe the connections with Losev-Manin's spaces of weighted…
After proving that every Schubert variety in the full flag variety of a complex reductive group $G$ is a general Hessenberg variety, we show that not all such Schubert varieties are adjoint Hessenberg varieties. In fact, in types A and C, we provide pattern avoidance criteria implying that the proportion of Schubert varieties that are adjoint Hessenberg varieties approaches zero as the rank of $G$ increases. We show also that in type A, some Schubert varieties are not isomorphic to any adjoint Hessenberg variety.
Let G be a complex reductive group and V a G-module. Let π: V \to V//G be the quotient morphism and set N(V) = π^{-1}(π(0)). We consider the following question. Is the null cone N(V) reduced, i.e., is the ideal of N(V) generated by G-invariant polynomials? We have complete results when G is SL_2, SL_3 or a simple group of adjoint type, and also when G is semisimple of adjoint type and the G-module V is irreducible.
Recently, E.Feigin introduced a very interesting contraction $\mathfrak q$ of a semisimple Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$ (see arXiv:1007.0646 and arXiv:1101.1898). We prove that these non-reductive Lie algebras retain good invariant-theoretic properties of $\mathfrak g$. For instance, the algebras of invariants of both adjoint and coadjoint representations of $\mathfrak q$ are free, and also the enveloping algebra of $\mathfrak q$ is a free module over its centre.
We prove LeBrun--Salamon conjecture in the following situation: if $X$ is a contact Fano manifold of dimension $2n+1$ whose group of automorphisms is reductive of rank $\geq \max(2,(n-3)/2)$ then $X$ is the adjoint variety of a simple group. The rank assumption is fulfilled not only by the three series of classical linear groups but also by almost all the exceptional ones.
Let G be a reductive algebraic group over the complex field and O_h be a closed adjoint orbit through a semisimple element h. By a result of Borho and Kraft (1979), it is known that the asymptotic cone of the orbit O_h is the closure of a Richardson nilpotent orbit corresponding to a parabolic subgroup whose Levi component is the centralizer Z_G(h) in G. In this paper, we prove an analogue on a semisimple orbit for a symmetric pair (G, K).
设$k$是特征$p>0$的代数闭域,$\ell$是另一个素数. O. Gabber和F.
Let $G$ be a simple algebraic group of adjoint type over $\mathbb C$, and let $M$ be the wonderful compactification of a symmetric space $G/H$. Take a $\widetilde G$--equivariant principal $R$--bundle $E$ on $M$, where $R$ is a complex reductive algebraic group and $\widetilde G$ is the universal cover of $G$. If the action of the isotropy group $\widetilde H$ on the fiber of $E$ at the identity coset is irreducible, then we prove that $E$ is polystable with respect to any polarization on $M$. Further, for wonderful compactification of the quotient of $\text{PSL}(n,{\mathbb C})$, $n\,\neq\, 4$…
Let (X, ω) be a compact connected Kaehler manifold of complex dimension d and E_G a holomorphic principal G-bundle on X, where G is a connected reductive linear algebraic group defined over C. Let Z (G) denote the center of G. We prove that the following three statements are equivalent: (1) There is a parabolic subgroup P of G and a holomorphic reduction of the structure group of E_G to P (say, E_P) such that the bundle obtained by extending the structure group of E_P to L(P)/Z(G) (where L(P) is the Levi quotient of P) admits a flat connection; (2) The adjoint vector bundle ad(E_G) is numerica…
Let T be an involution of the finite dimensional complex reductive Lie algebra g and g=k+p be the associated Cartan decomposition. Denote by K the adjoint group of k. The K-module p is the union of the subsets p^{(m)}={x | dim K.x =m}, indexed by integers m, and the K-sheets of (g,T) are the irreducible components of the p^{(m)}. The sheets can be, in turn, written as a union of so-called Jordan K-classes. We introduce conditions in order to describe the sheets and Jordan K-classes in terms of Slodowy slices. When g is of classical type, the K-sheets are shown to be smooth; if g=gl_N a complet…
Let $G$ be a reductive group scheme over the $p$-adic integers, and let $μ$ be a minuscule cocharacter for $G$. In the Hodge-type case, we construct a functor from nilpotent $(G,μ)$-displays over $p$-nilpotent rings $R$ to formal $p$-divisible groups over $R$ equipped with crystalline Tate tensors. When $R/pR$ has a $p$-basis étale locally, we show that this defines an equivalence between the two categories. The definition of the functor relies on the construction of a $G$-crystal associated with any adjoint nilpotent $(G,μ)$-display, which extends the construction of the Dieudonné crystal ass…
In this article we describe the $\tG\times \tG$-equivariant $K$-ring of $X$, where $\tG$ is a {\it factorial} cover of a connected complex reductive algebraic group $G$, and $X$ is a regular compactification of $G$. Furthermore, using the description of $K_{\tG\times \tG}(X)$, we describe the ordinary $K$-ring $K(X)$ as a free module of rank the cardinality of the Weyl group, over the $K$-ring of a toric bundle over $G/B$, with fibre the toric variety $\bar{T}^{+}$, associated to a smooth subdivision of the positive Weyl chamber. This generalizes our previous work on the wonderful compactifica…
Let $G$ be a connected reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $k$, and assume that the characteristic of $k$ is zero or a pretty good prime for $G$. Let $P$ be a parabolic subgroup of $G$ and let $\mathfrak p$ be the Lie algebra of $P$. We consider the commuting variety $\mathcal C(\mathfrak p) = \{(X,Y) \in \mathfrak p \times \mathfrak p \mid [X,Y] = 0\}$. Our main theorem gives a necessary and sufficient condition for irreducibility of $\mathcal C(\mathfrak p)$ in terms of the modality of the adjoint action of $P$ on the nilpotent variety of $\mathfrak p$. As a conseque…
Let T be a maximal torus of a connected reductive group G that acts linearly on a projective variety X so that all semi-stable points are stable. This paper compares the integration on the geometric invariant theory quotient X//G of Chow classes to the integration on the geometric invariant theory quotient X//T of certain lifts of these classes twisted by the top Chern class of the T -equivariant vector bundle induced by the quotient of the adjoint representation on the Lie algebra of G by that of T . We provide a purely algebraic proof that the ratio between any two such integrals is an invar…
The rationality problem for fields of invariants under linear algebraic groups (with special regards to the Brauer group)
